HistoryTheFacultyofArchitecture-Design&BuiltEnvironmentwasfoundedin1962asthefourthfacultyatBAU.Sincecommencement,ithasplayedakeyroleinaddressing&servingtheneedsofstudentsfromLebanon&theentireMiddleEast.TheFacultystartedwith36students in1962prosperingtoatotalof786students in2016,atvarious levelsofArchitectureprograminDebbieh&TripoliCampuses.

TheFacultywasinitiallylocatedatthemainbuildinginBeirutcampus.However,in1987&inordertoaccommodatetheincreasingnumberofstudents&facilities,itmovedtothenowlabeled“HaririBuilding”&occupiedthetopfourfloors.ItremainedthereuntilOctober2006whenitbecamethefirstBAUfacultytoresideinthenewlyestablishedDebbiehcampusintheShoufDistrictinlinewiththeUniversity’sexpansionplans.Moreover,theFacultyhasexpandedtoTripoliCampussince2010&nowithostsaround206students.

The Faculty constantly updates its programs & associated structure, & offers new programsresponding to thecommunityneeds& jobmarket. In2005, theFaculty implemented theCredit

Hour System, instead of the two academic terms scheme, thereby offering students a moreadaptable&responsiveprogramspreadingoveraten-semesterperiod(minimum)fortheprogramofArchitecture.Lately,theFacultyhaslaunchednew3-yearprogramsinDesignatDebbieh&TripoliCampuses;theprogramsofInteriorDesign,GraphicDesign&LandscapeDesignwerefirstlyofferedinFall2014/2015,&inFall2016/2017theFashionDesignprogramhasbeenalsointroduced.Today,the number of students registered in these programs is 117 students inDebbieh Campus& 32students inTripoliCampus.

In June 2012, the 5-year Bachelor program in Architecture has been awarded unconditionalvalidation for RIBA Part 1.

Organizational structure

VisionThe vision of the Faculty of Architecture- Design& Built Environment is to foster a challenginglearningenvironment&tocontinuallycompeteaswellasleadadvancesinarchitecturaleducation,inordertoprepareinnovative,critical&industriousgraduatesabletoimprove,throughtheirfuturecareers,thequalityofthebuiltenvironment.

Mission Consistentwith theUniversity strategy, the Faculty of Architecture- Design& Built Environmentis committed to delivering a professional architectural education necessary for those seeking toenterthearchitecturalpractice.TheFaculty’sacademicmissionistofurtherdevelopthediscipline&practiceofarchitecturethroughaseamlessprogramofundergraduate&postgraduatestudiesrespectingindividualism&diversity,&fosteringforcreativity&rationalismindesign&constructionprocess.TheFacultyseekstoeducatediligentarchitectswhopracticetheircareerinaresponsivemannertowardsthesociety,culture&environmentatthelocal,regional&internationallevel.Academic Programs

TheFacultyoffersaBachelorofArchitectureDegreewhere thestandarddurationof study is10semesters,aswellasBachelordegreesinDesignprogramsincludinginteriordesign,graphicdesign,landscapedesign,&fashiondesignwherethedurationofstudyissixsemesters.

I-ARCHITECTUREObjectives The teaching of Architecture employs a progressive strategy to achieve the following broadobjectives:

•To create&maintain a positive educational environment that promotes learning&personaldevelopment;

•Todeliverhigh-qualityarchitecturaleducation,throughadevelopedcurriculum&syllabuswithinherentflexibility&freedomofselectingdifferentfieldsofspecialization;

•Toadoptprogressive learningmethodswhichleadtodevelopedknowledge&acquiredskills,ensuredthroughadequatedelivery&testingprocessesateachstageofstudy;

•Toprovide studentswitha comprehensivebasisof awareness, knowledge,understanding,&aptitude,throughcoveringawidespectrumoftheoretical&practicalstudiesinsuchfieldsasEnvironment,Art,Culture,Technology,Sociology,&Economy;and

•To implement an ongoing process ofmonitoring & development of performance, driven bythe emphasis on future developments,within the domain of architecture aswell as relateddisciplines.

Admission RequirementsTobeacceptedforanundergraduatedegree,applicantsmust:•Hold the official Lebanese Secondary School Certificate in a branch relevant to the chosenundergraduate field of specialization, or an official equivalent;

•Successfully pass an entrance exam tomeasure the level of proficiency in English Language(orprovideevidenceofEnglishLanguageabilitiessuchasTOEFL, ILETS…),&anaptitudetest(thinking skills, technical& architectural skills), aswell as attend a Personal Interview.

Learning Outcomes The Faculty offers the Bachelor Degree in Architecture in a five-year cumulative program (10semesters). After the fifth year, the undergraduate student is a qualified architect & eligible topractice professionally with the following abilities & skills:•Fullunderstandingofallarchitectural&engineeringconcepts&practices.•Knowledgeoftheevolvingnatureoftheprofession,&therapidlychangingconditionsinwhicharchitects currently practice,& inwhich the traditional expertise, capacities& authority areincreasingly being challenged.

•Understanding of modern & contemporary architectural theories that explain the latestphilosophiesbywell-knownarchitects& the local architecture inorder topreserve the localidentity.

Program Overview The undergraduate curriculum for the degree of Bachelor in Architecture consists of 170 credithours+ICDL.However,UniversityRequirementshaveatotalof12creditswhichleaves158creditsforArchitecturecourses.Architecturecoursesthusformatotalof93%oftherequiredcoursesforgraduation.Thetotalcredithoursofdesignstudio&supportingcoursesare118outof158,thusconstituting75%ofthetotalArchitecturecredithours.ThistotalnumberofdesignstudiocredithoursisformedofDesignStudioCourses.Design Supporting Courses are calculated in different percentages according to their effectiverelevance to design studio courses.

ARCH296 THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE II (2Cr.: 2Lec) This course explores the form, space & scale: form defining space, qualities of architecturalspace,articulation&organizationofform&space,circulationelements &buildingapproaches.It investigatestheintentionsinarchitecture:designprocess, architecturalconcept&unity.Italsoreviewstheprinciplesofaesthetics:vocabulary of architectural compositions, visual & aesthetic relationships. Regulating heat transfer for occupant thermal comfort. Description of passive means for environmental control, including presentation of scientificexplanations&designguidelinesforutilizingthesemeans.Designguidelines foruse in thepreliminaryschematicdesignphase.

MissionThe mission of the Fashion Design Program at Beirut Arab University is to provide learningopportunitiesthatintegratescriticalthinkingskillswithawidevarietyofcreativeexperiencesinthefieldofFashionDesign.Verybroadly,theFashionDesignProgramseekstoprovidestudentswiththehighestprofessional standards toadvanceahuman-centeredpracticeofFashiondesign thatcontributespositivelytothehealth,safety&well-beingofpeopleinlocal,regional&globalcontexts.

ObjectivesThe broad aim of Fashion design program is to provide a variety of transformative learningopportunities to shape creative, rational, socially & environmentally responsible Fashion designprofessionals. This thorough goal is supported through the following objectives:

-To develop the intellectual & practical skills of the student in the concepts, principles,development&realizationofcostumesdesignforthefashionindustry,withasolidbackgroundofdesigntheories,histories,environmentalresponsiveness,&standards;alongwithcreative&critical thinking skills.

FASD208 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN FOR FASHION DESIGN (3Cr.: 2Lec; 2Lab) Thiscourseisdesignedtoexploredigitaltechniquesof2D&3DModeling&animation software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop. .Students will manipulate basic blocks using the pattern design software (PDS) & create garment models, orders,&markersforproduction.Inaddition,theywillexploreadvancedtechniques &appropriatedigital tools tohelp themquickly visualize&enhance theirability to efficiently create original ideas by computer. FASD302 FASHION DESIGN STUDIO III (4CR.: 0LEC; 8STU) An intermediate studio course where students continue to develop their personal research methodologies, design philosophy, processes & innovative approaches to materiality, as well as examine more complex design concepts in order to demonstrate a breadthof understandingof brand identity&user contexts. In this course, Considerationwill be given to the visual curationof the fashionprocess in termsofpersonalidentity;focusingondevelopmentoforiginaldesigns&executionincorporating draping, drafting & flat pattern techniques. Pre-req.: FASD301.

FASD303 SEWING TECHNIQUES (3 CR.: 1 LEC; 4 STU) ThisCourseintroducesstudentstothebasicsofsewingfromatechnicalpointofview. Duringthesemesterthestudentwilllearnhowtousevarioussewingmachines,both industrial & household. Students will also investigate & then execute all the basic stitchesusedintheapparelindustry.

FASD304 TEXTILE DESIGN (3 CR.: 2 LEC; 2 STU) Thiscourseisacomprehensiveoverviewofthetextileindustrywithastudyoftextile science, covering the design & production techniques of textiles & fabric styling. FASD305 HISTORY OF COSTUME & FASHION DESIGN (3CR.: 3 LEC) ThiscoursereviewsthedevelopmentsinCostume&Fashiondesignaroundtheworldfromearlycivilizationstothepresent&thefactorsthatinfluencestylechanges.Anin-
