BEST CITY

MILAN

Milan is seeing an exciting renaissance. Enlightened fashion players such as Miuccia Prada and Giorgio Armani have left their mark with projects that are developing into key art and culture destinations: the OMA-designed Fondazione Prada tower was one of Europe’s most anticipated openings last year, and Armani’s empire includes the Armani/Silos museum and the Armani Hotel. Moshe Tabibnia’s Building gallery has been energising the contemporary art scene, while Luca Cipelletti’s Cavallerizze created a dramatic addition to the National Museum of Science and Technology. Meanwhile, Herzog & de Meuron’s Porta Volta development, Foster + Partners’ Apple Store, Zaha Hadid Architects’ Generali Tower and Piuarch’s Gucci HQ are seeing the cityscape evolve to combine its traditional grandeur with a contemporary architectural language.Photography: Claudio Sabatino

LIFE-ENHANCER

OF THE YEAR

‘GOPLE’ LAMP,

BY BIG, FOR ARTEMIDE

For those who strule to keep their indoor ora alive, the ‘Gople’ lamp may be a godsend. A collaboration between Artemide and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the lamp features technology that aids plant growth, while also providing functional white light. The RWB (red-white-blue) lighting system, which Artemide patented in 2011, replaces the standard ‘red-green-blue’ as the combination favoured for the psychophysical wellbeing of both man and plant. Handblown using an ancient Venetian technique, the white crystal lamp is also available in transparent silver and bronze nishes. artemide.comPhotography: Philippe Fragnière

JUDGE

NENEH CHERRY

MUSICIAN

You can argue that Neneh Cherry put an end to the 1980s. Her 1989 debut album Raw Like Sushi, a delirious mix of hip-hop-inected pop, was both a full stop and a key musical marker for the decade ahead. Her new album, Broken Politics, a collaboration with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden, is more reective but just as timely. ‘It’s a ght against the extinction of free thought and spirit,’ she says. Cherry was born in Sweden in 1964 to a Swedish artist mother and a Sierra Leonean musician father, and her stepfather was the world fusion music pioneer Don Cherry. She arrived in London at 14, throwing herself into the punk scene and, by the late 1980s, was a key member of the Bualo collective, who all but dened London’s street style of the time. She picked out Rick Owens for Best Women’s Fashion Collection and we felt there was no one better to personify Owens’ take on thoroughly contemporary power dressing.Photography: Hannah Starkey Writer: Nick Compton

COLLECTION A/W18

RICK OWENS

Rick Owens’ collection explored the trappings of human adornment, considering the physical impact of bustles, panniers and exaerated costumes of the past. This fascination translated into padded and bulbous silhouettes in neutral tones and yellow-and-brown check, including tunics in camel hair and linen felt, bum bag-like pillows, jackets with puy extrusions, and oversized parkas with swaddling sleeves. Owens oset his avant-garde silhouettes against more wearable items, including deconstructed coats with frayed panels, cashmere running shorts and sock boots with curving wedged heels. rickowens.eu

BEST NEW PUBLIC

BUILDING

V&A DUNDEE, UK,

BY KENGO KUMA AND

ASSOCIATES

The highly sculptural V&A Dundee is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s rst UK building – and Scotland’s rst dedicated design museum. The raed clis of north- eastern Scotland inspired the composition’s distinct shape, clad in some 2,500 sheets of layered horizontal cast-stone panelling. Yet the concrete structure appears light, bearing an abstracted resemblance to the prow of a moored ship. Kuma wanted this building to welcome visitors with a strong design gesture. Located on the city’s waterfront, overlooking the River Tay, the new museum also includes a café, restaurant and learning facilities. kkaa.co.jp; vam.ac.uk/dundeePhotography: Benedict Redgrove

JUDGE

PHILIPPE MALOUIN

DESIGNER

Last year’s Designer of the Year has had another busy year, with new projects for brands such as Resident, ZaoZuo and SCP, as well as an exhibition chronicling the ten years since he opened his studio, shown in Hyères’ Villa Noailles as part of southern France’s annual Design Parade festival. Seen together, the works demonstrated the Canadian designer’s versatility with materials and craft, and his experimentation with shapes and concepts. Coincidentally, his successor, Pierre Yovanovitch, also took part in Design Parade. ‘Pierre’s projects are always rened and utilise texture, light and colour intelligently,’ says Malouin. ‘He does more with less, because less is more.’ Photography: Rose Marie Cromwell Writer: Rosa Bertoli

‘ASTRO’ FAN,

BY NICHETTO STUDIO,

FOR TUBES

Designed by Milan-based Nichetto Studio to look like ‘a small spaceship that is about to take o ’, this multifunctional heater and air purier is smart in every sense of the word. Controlled by either touch sensors or remotely (through an Android or iOS app), the intelligent device cleanses the air thanks to an active carbon lter with 85-95 per cent eciency, neutralises unwelcome odours autonomously with adjustable intensity, and blasts warm air when needed. The versatile thermoventilator is available in four lacquered matt colours and two dierent leg-length options. Featuring soft curved edges and a retro look, ‘Astro’ is part of Tubes’ Plug & Play collection, a range of freestanding designs that can be positioned anywhere in the house or in the oce.nichettostudio.com; tubesradiatori.comPhotography: Philippe Fragnière

This secluded retreat in the Namib Desert is the rst new build house by South African designer Porky Hefer, who took cues from his ‘Nest’ furniture series, upscaling and extrapolating architecturally. Conceived for conservationist Swen Bachran, the house is thatched with reeds collected from along the Zambezi River, providing natural insulation, while the bricks and steel frame were handmade on site. Inside, a sunken lounge with leather banquette pays homage to the organic style of the late American architect Bruce Go. animal-farm.co.zaPhotography: Katinka Bester

JUDGE

PAOLA ANTONELLI

CURATOR

In her role as senior curator of the Architecture and Design department at MoMA in New York, the Italian-born Antonelli has become known for her highly analytical, anthropologic approach. Unsurprisingly, she chose Milan as Best City. ‘The Milanese not only love design, but truly live by it,’ she says. ‘They use it, they talk about it, they critique it, they overdo it.’ Putting the city’s design chops aside, however, Antonelli was quick to debunk the myth that the Milanese are perennially elegant. ‘They can be very restrained, and that is understood as good taste. But they can be over the top. And, thankfully, they can also display a modicum of bad taste.’ An example of Antonelli’s good taste, though, is her choice for this year’s Best House – Porky Hefer’s Nest in Namibia. ‘This dream house is like John Lautner meets Black Panther.’Photography: Molly MatalonWriter: Pei-Ru Keh

DESIGNER OF THE YEAR

PIERRE YOVANOVITCH

Parisian designer Yovanovitch might be associated with interior design and architecture, but he is better described as a master of form, material and space. Last year, the launch of his ‘Oops’ collection for R & Company demonstrated his charisma as a furniture designer, but it’s also evident in his growing body of interior work, too. From a winery in the Douro Valley to hotels in Méribel, Zermatt and Comporta and private residences in Paris, Moscow, LA, Tel Aviv and London, it’s no surprise he’s in hot demand. There is an unmistakeable condence in Yovanovitch’s work. He has forged his own path, deftly directing the skills of the many craftspeople he works closely with (and credits). He brings spaces to life from his imagination, not Pinterest, and hence they feel vivid in reality and don’t just look good in photos. As such, he is one of the most intriguing designers of our times. pierreyovanovitch.comPhotography: Jérôme GallandWriter: Hugo Macdonald

DO HO SUH

ARTIST

The London-based Korean artist’s ongoing reimagining of places like home has taken many forms, including Bridging Home, a plywood replica of a traditional Hanok-style Korean house, complete with bamboo garden, crash landed on a footbridge in the City of London. For the Best New Hotel category, Suh selected Healing Stay Kosmos on Ulleungdo Island in South Korea. ‘I’ve never been but I know the island is very small and pretty remote,’ he says. ‘It takes several hours on rough seas to get there, and the island is notorious for storms and snow, so I thought it was really brave to build there. It’s a stunning building, though, and the views are incredible. And that’s not just Korean bias.’Photography: Johnnie Shand Kydd Writer: Nick Compton

HEALING STAY KOSMOS,

ULLEUNGDO ISLAND,

SOUTH KOREA

Perched on a cli edge on the volcanic Ulleungdo Island, which lies 350km east of Seoul in the Sea of Japan, is this striking retreat by Seoul-based architects The System Lab. Snow-white concrete walls swoop and swirl like the potent chi energy elds that locals believe ow through the island. Some of the resort’s high-ceilinged rooms – sparsely furnished with a severe white palette – also curve and bend like the interior of a giant seashell. Equally striking is the work of chef Sun-jin Hwang (ex-El Bulli and Noma), whose menu features Dokdo shrimps with an oyster emulsion, and a short rib cooked sous-vide in red wine for 40 hours. thekosmos.co.krPhotography: Yong Kwan Kim

BJARKE INGELS

ARCHITECT

New fatherhood has not slowed the Danish superstar, who signed on to judge this year’s Design Awards despite being on paternity leave. His practice grows in international reach, recently topping out Vancouver House, a supercharged take on the Flatiron building; completing its rst skyscraper in Asia (home to Shenzhen Energy Company); and winning commissions from Albania to Ecuador. Its biest triumphs, though, are still in its birthplace of Copenhagen: the opening of the new Noma, last February, showed that Ingels is as adept at nesse as at grand statements, while an autumn exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg showcased collaborations with the likes of Ai Weiwei and Es Devlin, rmly installing BIG in our cultural rmament. COPENHAGEN

The most inuential eatery of the century moved into a purpose-built new home last year (W*229), an 11-piece ‘village’ designed by BIG around a Second World War-era arsenal overlooking Christiania. Glass walkways with Scandinavian terrazzo ooring link the buildings, each formed of a dierent material, from concrete to tombac. Studio David Thulstrup’s interiors balance the rened and the relaxed, with bespoke designs such as tables by Brdr Krüger, and lights in limestone and dried seaweed made by Jonas Edvard. Depending on the season, the menu focuses on seafood, vegetables or the bounty of the forest, served on ceramics commissioned by stylist Christine Rudolph. DAVID KORINS

SET DESIGNER

New York-based Korins is the award-winning set designer and creative director behind hit musical Hamilton, live shows for Lady Gaga, installations at Coachella and exhibition designs for Gagosian. His eponymous design and experience rm is currently nessing the musical adaptation of Beetlejuice, opening on Broadway in March, and the touring ‘Hamilton: The Exhibition’, which premieres in Chicago in April. As a Design Awards judge, he says, ‘I tried to look at the products with a practical, useful eye. I loved The Nest [page 140]. There was something about the warmth that felt like the essence of home.’ Another standout was Ferragamo’s menswear. ‘I could see myself in the clothes and appreciated the collection as an intersection of high art, fashion and usability.’ Photography: Jeremy Liebman Writer: Pei-Ru Keh

BEST NEW GROOMING

PLANT-POWERED

DEODORANT, BY MYRO

Myro is a rellable deodorant system that addresses the ecological impact of ‘disposable’ plastic. Designed by New York studio Visibility, the packaging is a permanent piece of hardware that the user keeps, relling with deodorising pods. The case, in ve shades, elevates a not-so-glamorous routine, and is airport security-friendly and leakproof. The rells, sent by mail, come in scents such as Chill Wave (cucumber, jasmine, spearmint) and Pillow Talk (violet leaf, ylang ylang and wild amyris) and are packed with plant-based ingredients, such as barley powder, to keep you dry, and essential oils that release scent over time. They contain no aluminium, parabens, phthalates or talc. mymyro.com Photography: Philippe Fragnière

FERRAGAMO

Guillaume Meilland cut his teeth at Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin. This, his third collection for Florentine house Salvatore Ferragamo, was presented alongside the debut oering from newly appointed womenswear creative director Paul Andrew. Together, the duo devised a kaleidoscopic palette, which updated classic silhouettes in rich and unusual hues. The exquisitely colour-blocked clothes ranged from buttery leather overcoats to boxy jackets, preppy striped sweaters to sleek macs, and double-layered knitwear to understated tailoring, as worn opposite by our Design Awards judge David Korins. ferragamo.com
