Art & Design Relationship

Page 3: Design and Interaction Design

Let’s say you have a great idea. A message or statement that you want to deliver.

Page 4: Design and Interaction Design

You deliver the message on a medium in a certain form.

Page 5: Design and Interaction Design

The medium can invoke various responses from the audiences.

Page 6: Design and Interaction Design

However, the responses could be way off from your original message. And that’s fine (at least in art)

They can keep the responses or reactions to themselves.

Page 7: Design and Interaction Design

You are (mostly) not responsible for the responses.

Page 8: Design and Interaction Design

[insert art picture here]Self expressionYou are (mostly) not responsible1-way communication

ART

Page 9: Design and Interaction Design

Design is quite different though. We have a clear intention in mind and deliver the intention in a medium.

Page 10: Design and Interaction Design

We hope the audiences understand the intention and the message.

Designers are responsible to make sure the right message is delivered and understood.

Page 11: Design and Interaction Design

Designers are responsible to make sure the responses are inline with the intention.

The audiences can respond, creating a dialogue between designers and audiences.

DESIGN

Page 14: Design and Interaction Design

What do you want others to:- Feel- Do- Behave- React- Reply- InteractWhat are the intentions?

Page 15: Design and Interaction Design

The message should be understood by others

=

Page 16: Design and Interaction Design

How do we ‘shape’ the message:- Tone- Word choice- Body language- Facial expression- Rhetoric devices

-> The ‘interface’ is not limited to visual.

Page 17: Design and Interaction Design

However, each response is personal. Why? Because we’re dealing with human.

Page 18: Design and Interaction Design

Time in communication.Time in design.

Page 19: Design and Interaction Design

Let’s compare a conversation:

- between two strangers who just met, and

- best friends for 10 years.

What are the differences?

How much the effort spent to deliver and understand the message?

What about a conversation between a newly downloaded product?

A conversation in a long used product?

Design Process

Page 21: Design and Interaction Design

Ignore them.

Page 22: Design and Interaction Design

Ignore them. But know the basic first.

Page 23: Design and Interaction Design

Don’t spent too much time comparing and worrying about

wide ranges of methods.

That is not the right time if we are just entered this field

(Design/IxD).

I think most methods are essentially the same.

Just pick one that you (or your mentor) think is appropriate,

understand it deeply, and get the essentials.

Only then it’s a better time to compare methods.

Page 25: Design and Interaction Design

It’s uncertain.Clear design process is rarely happened.

Page 26: Design and Interaction Design

See the tree and the forest at the same time

Page 27: Design and Interaction Design

The process is not linear.Unclear beginning and end.

Page 28: Design and Interaction Design

What can we do?

Page 29: Design and Interaction Design

Understand the process.Break them.

Use this -> Intuition

Page 30: Design and Interaction Design

What!?Intuition?

Page 31: Design and Interaction Design

It is a balance between:- Experience (case studies, projects)- Confidence (successes)

Page 32: Design and Interaction Design

Embrace the ambiguity and uncertainty

Page 33: Design and Interaction Design

Become innate with the process

Page 34: Design and Interaction Design

You are the processYou are the designer

You’re the one who’s responsible for the message and response.

Shaper of behavior

Page 37: Design and Interaction Design

What kind of- Feedback- Reaction- Feeling- Perception- Action

Do we want others to have or do

Page 38: Design and Interaction Design

MANIPULATIVE?Yes.

Page 39: Design and Interaction Design

Remember: intention & responsibility

Page 40: Design and Interaction Design

We achieve this by creating artifacts (a.k.a. concepts in Traveloka)

Page 41: Design and Interaction Design

Artifacts are just means to our intent

Page 42: Design and Interaction Design

“Interaction Design is the creation of dialogue between a person and a product, system, or service. This dialogue is both physical and

emotional in nature and is manifested in the interplay between form, function, and technology as experienced over time.”
