IMMIGRATION and CUSTOMSREGULATIONS

Passengers purchasing A laskan t ickets i n t heUnited States w i l l , as a rule, have identif icationslips attached thereto. These should be surrender-ed a s t h e passenger presents h i m s e l f a t t h ePurser's Office, i n Vancouver or Prince Rupert.

A l l passengers a r e fu rn ished w i t h quest ion-naires, which should be completed and returnedto the Purser prompt ly.

A f te r leaving Prince Rupert northbound (noticeof t ime w i l l be given), passengers w i l l call a t thePurser's off ice a n d receive t h e i r ident i f icat ioncards (wh ich have been numbered). These cardsmust be retained and presented t o the U.S. I m -migration officer, who w i l l either board the steam-er a n h o u r before a r r i va l a t Ketchikan, o r i m -mediately o n a r r i v a l a t t h a t po r t , a n d w i l l b elocated a t a convenient place to be announced onboard ship.

Canadian citizens require no specific documentsas prerequisite to admission to the Uni ted Statesfor v is i t ing periods o f less than s i x months.

Bri t ish subjects w h o have been admi t ted t oCanada f o r residence and a re domiciled therein,but are not Canadian citizens, require no specificdocuments a s prerequis i te t o admission t o t h eUnited States f o r v is i t ing periods n o t t o exceedtwenty-nine days.

Should a passenger embarking a t Skagway beleft a t a n y other A laskan por t , t h i s would con-stitute t ranspor t ing said passenger between twoAmerican ports by a foreign vessel, a contraven-tion of the American Coasting Regulations. Hencethe necessity of ensuring that al l passengers visit-ing ashore a t A laskan por ts southbound re tu rnto the steamer.

Obviously, this procedure is unnecessary north-bound, a s t h e p o r t o f embarkat ion has been aCanadian port , i.e., Vancouver o r Pr ince Rupert,or some Canadian por t en route.

I f f o r -tune favours she w i l l sweep th rough on a longrun-out, but at times she must buck a strong floodtide, creeping Inch by inch past Maud Island l ight.Fifteen miles f r o m the Narrows, Chatham Po in tis reached. F r o m Cape Mudge to Chatham Pointyou have been in Discovery Passage and now youenter Johnstone Strai ts.

Harr is a n d Joe Juneau, were a t t rac ted t o t h i ssection by reports tha t Indians had found gold inwhat is now known as Gold Creek. They locatedseveral claims there and made some very valuablediscoveries. Later a number of quartz ledges werediscovered and a camp established a t the presentsite o f the C i t y o f Juneau. Th is camp was f i r s tcalled Harr isburg, but later the name was changedto Juneau i n honour o f the other o f the locators,and the mining dist r ic t was known as the Har r i sMining D is t r i c t .

Juneau has a present population o f 8500. I t isthe capital o f Alaska, and as such is the home o fthe Governor and other officials o f the Te r r i t o ry.

Since the ear l y gold discoveries, several largemining companies have operated here and pa idmillions i n dividends. The Treadwel l Gold Mineshad a total production o f over sixty-eight mil l ionsand p a i d i n dividends more t h a n twenty-sevenmill ion dol lars. Nearer the graveyard, reached by a short t ra i l ,is Reid 's Fa l l s , named i n honour o f t he fa l l enDeputy Sheri ff , and here i s seen a more f i t t i ngeffort to preserve his memory than in the notorietywhich is "Soapy's".

Shor t ly a f ter, t o starboard,wi l l be seen the delta o f the Kemano River whichfinds i t s source i n the heart o f the Coast Range.On the small peninsula formed of al luvial depositsthere is an Indian village. Rugged mountains risesteeply to a height o f 5,000 feet f rom the floor o fthe Kemano River Val ley.

Sailing 50 mi les down t h e length o f DouglasChannel we once more regain the regular steamerlane a t Grenv i l le Channel , a f t e r spending a nentire day in the fiords.

The nex t morn ing we reach Ocean Fal ls , t hehead o f Fisher Channel, nestl ing in a picturesquesetting o f rugged mountain scenery.

As yo u r f i r s t g lance sweeps the scene, t o theleft you w i l l see the new Hotel, Hospital and theresidential distr ict. O v e r the dock towards whichthe ship's bow points is the town, w i th i ts p re t tygarden-bedecked homes backing f a r u p the h i l l -side. To the r igh t may be seen the mil l site, hous-ing a n ex t remely e ff ic ient paper-making p l a n tand connecting b y a br idge w i t h the residentialsection. A l m o s t i n the centre o f the picture on ahigher level, is the dam, holding back the tons o fwater necessary to operate the m i l l and fu rn i shelectric cur rent f o r the domestic purposes. The area o f the lake supplying this poweris 47 square miles, the average depth being 800feet.
