Medical Ethics and Culture Pillar EMSA 2011/2012
Introduction Handbook NCM 2012 At NCM 2012 prepare yourself for an inspiring and exciting adventure with brand new Medical Ethics and Culture (E&C) Pillar. Due to some reconfiguration in EMSA European Board this year we could devote more attention to promoting cultural events and initiatives among medical students. Much more involvement of many EMSAi was also recognized in the field of medical ethics. On Friday 11th in the Pillar Session you will have the wonderful opportunity not only to talk about but also to EXPERIENCE the remarkably successful Movies and Medicine project. You’ve never witnessed it? You are in the right place, with best company and in ideal circumstances to try it! You know M&M well? Then most probably you are under its charm. Let’s feel it together! In the Saturday 12th session we will have a brief yet thrilling travel through the structure of EMSA E&C Pillar. You will have a quick look at Cultural Injection Posters, watch some photos from the Doctor’s Band concert in Turkey, take home (literally) a piece of what EMSA Trans Plantation project consists of and see how Med Eth News is being edited. We will have a look at the 8 fascinating projects that YOU established this year. WARNING: there will be a little surprise for the Coordinators in charge of those Projects :) Don’t miss the little awards ceremony! ;)

EMSA Movies and Medicine - “The Doctor”
The Doctor is a
1991 Americandrama film directed
by Randa Haines and
starring William Hurtas
a doctor who undergoes a
transformation in his views about
life, illness and human
relationships. It is loosely based on
the book A Taste Of My Own
Medicine.[1]

EMSA Med Eth News – last issue –
May 2012 ‘The Vaccines’
Dear Medical Students,
the beginning of May means at least 2 things; ONE is you should probably study for your exams (you are very welcome for the reminder!) and SECOND that next issue of EMSA Med Eth News is out. Luckily, there is no need to choose between the two :) In this release we decided to take you on a small trip through the stormy history of medical vaccines and controversies around them. Also please make sure you don't miss the FLASH game we provided you with in the attachment. So many minutes (never to return) were wasted on it... but none of us regrets :) Why vaccines? 14th May 1796 Edward Jenner first injects pox vaccine into the body of a 8-year-old boy. That's how our story beginns... We hope this topic and our evaluation of it meets your expectations! Olga & Jacob

International Women’s Day = EMSA + EPSA
This year EMSA Ethics Pillar undertook cooperation with European
Pharmacy Students’ Association (EPSA) on the project called ‘International
Women’s Day – 8th March 2012’. As a product of this collaboration a Facebook
site was established (link below) where the Work Gropus consisting of EMSA
and EPSA members was adding posts on famous...
... female doctors
... scientists (chemists, biologists, pharmacists)
... sports-women (olympic champions)
... Nobel Prize winners in all fields
... other inspiring Women that changed and ruled the world! ;)

At the Facebook site we present art-works related to medicine (we search for
diseases at famous paintings) or add links to articles which deal with medical
conditions in musicians, actors or writers. Here you’ll also find some web-sites or
galleries showing how in numerous cases art is inspired by medicine. Please, become
our fan! You can also give us a hand with finding even more materials! Just contact:

EMSA Choir and Orchestra
In TURKEY: When the Projects of EMSA were being formed, I really wanted to focus on the
Choir and Orchestra. I felt we are the ones always busy with studying and need
to relax yet stay pro-active at the same time. Performing some music was ideal
way to do so!
