Descendants of
William Hogan and Elizabeth Hogan
1. William1
Hogan, born abt 1761 in Ireland; died 20 Nov 1833 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; buried
in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. He married Elizabeth Hogan, born abt 1774; died 14 Jun 1832 in
Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; buried in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland.
Notes for William Hogan
He emigrated from Ireland at age 20. He settled at Ochre Pit Cove in 1785
and moved to Northern Bay 8 years later.
I wonder whether he was initially a fisherman who returned to Ireland in
the Fall - after fishing from the Spring (after Easter) to the late Fall.
In the Newfoundland Ancestor, Volume 12 Issue 1 pp 13 -15, John O'Mara
identified him as one of the first members of the Benevolent Irish Society.
Originally founded in Carbonear, O'Mara lists all the members as of
February 17, 1806 which includes the 74 Founding Members.
In the Plantation Book he is mentioned twice. In 1785 he rented a plot in
Ochre Pit (Oaker Pits) Cove from Jonathan Parsons for 1 shilling per annum.
In 1803, it indicated that he acquired a plot in Northern Bay.
His plot was 65 yards (East to West) by 64 yards (South to North).
It indicated that the plot was wooded and that he cleared the woods himself.
John Johnson was his eastern neighbor and John Commins was his western
and southern neighbor.
Jim McCarthy indicates that the Plantation Book has his birth as 1758.
Gert Crosbie in her Birth, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland indicates
that he died on 20 Nov 1833 at age 72. That year and the age bothers me.
One William is listed on the 1832 Voters List for Northern Bay, Bay de Verde
District. If he were alive, I'd expect two Williams to be listed (he and his son).
The list included Patrick, Richard, James Senior, James Junior, James (McNamara),
John and Joseph Hogan. James (McNamara) Hogan and Joseph Hogan are not
on my lists of descendants of William. the Planter.

Joan said:
John Hogan was born at Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and
settled at Northern Bay (circa 1810) with several of his brothers.
Information from Ed Chafe- email August 24, 1999
John Hogan married Sarah Rixon of Job's Cove on 20 October 1812.
John and Sarah had at least seven children.
JOHN, baptized 26 January 1814
MAURICE, baptized 13 October 1815 (married Jane O'Flaherty)
BRIDGET, baptized 24 April 1817
MARY, baptized 4 May 1819
JOHANNA, baptized 2 May 1824
PHILIP, baptized 28 June 1826 (married Mary Johnson)
EDWARD, baptized 15 May 1828 (married Elizabeth Mansfield)
The 1833 Poor List records that there were seven in the family, so
at least two of the children had died by then. There is a strange
notation on the list, "Br. B" which may indicate where they lived
in Northern Bay. John is listed in the 1835 Voter's List. There
is no headstone for any of this family. However, there are still
descendants of John & Sarah living in Northern Bay.

Notes for Richard Francis Tobin
Lived at 52 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Seems that he was based in Channel
Newfoundland, St. Pierre, and North Sydney.
The following appeared in the North Sydney Newspaper under the heading:
Thrilling Escape from Death - Forty-eight hours in the Rigging of a Sunken
Vessel, then Rescued by Life Lines.
North Sydney, Nova Scotia, May 8, 1895: Capt. R.H. Tobin of North Sydney, has
arrived home, having lost his schooner, the Freddie Walter, on the Penguin
Islands, which consist of 22 rocks about ten miles from the rock bound coast,
where many a good ship and crew have met their fate. Capt. Tobin left St.
Pierre on the 19th ult. for this port in ballast. The following Tuesday
morning, a heavy breeze from the southwest came up. The pumps got choked.
They headed for Burgo. She was then about 80 miles from St. Pierre. The
weather became too thick to make Burgo; wore ship again; the pumps being now

free, and the course shaped for Miquelon. The wind veered southerly,
increasing to a gale, the foresail was carried away and the storm trisail was
bent in its stead. The foresail was repaired and set and the captain went down
in his cabin to take his position. While examining his charts, he heard his
crew shout "breakers". He at once rushed on deck and grabbed the helm and put
it to port. He was just a minute too late, for the vessel struck on the
western end of the rocks. The Captain shouted to stand by the ship. One poor
fellow, Thomas Power of Placentia Nfld. jumped for the rock and was not seen
afterwards. Two others jumped and landed safely on the rock. The vessel
lurched off the rock and began to sink rapidly, and about half a mile further
down a break was seen in the rocks into which she was driven. She sank to the
sheer poles, and the captain and another man took to the rigging, where they
remained for forty-eight hours. She struck at 10.30 a. m. on Tuesday the 23rd
ult. The first night they were in the rigging, the bottom was knocked out of
the vessel. Some fishing boats took the men off with difficulty. If the wind
had not subsided the men on the rock would have been washed away. As it was
they were hauled through the water to the fishing boats with the aid of life
lines and were greatly exhausted. Published in the Newfoundland Ancestor, 21/1/046.
The Census of 1901 lists his wife as a Widow so he died before March 1901.
Oral histry: His daughter Mary Elizabeth cared for him for the last seven years of his life. Where?
Notes for Honora Catherine Dooley "Nora"
Note about her date of birth: Date of Birth on the record (10 Sep 1849) is
from her Baptism Record. A Census record indicates a date of birth
of 10 Sept. 1849. The 1901 Census record indicates her year of birth was 1852.
Automated Census of 1901:
Tobin Hanorah K. F Head W Sep 10 1852 48
Tobin Mary Elizabeth F Daughter S May 21 1874 26
Tobin John Francis M Son S Aug 21 1882 18
Tobin Perci James M Son S Nov 6 1885 15
Tobin Josephine B. F Daughter S Sep 10 1886 14
Her marriage record indicates that she
was 10 years younger than Richard. Oral history indicates
that she was 18 when my grandfather William Richard
was born. She was nearly 21.
Her death certificate of August 26, 1932 lists her as Hanora C

and Raelene Earle Died on the ice seal hunting. A quote from Canadiana: "Northern Bay has had its
tragedies too, as well, four fine young men from this place went on the ice one morning, the Arctic
ice was into the shore line. Two Hogan boys, they were brothers (Patrick and Martin. sons of Maurice
Hogan and Jean O'Flaherty) Willy March (son of Cecily Hogan and Simeon March) and Richard
Fahey (son of Cecelia Hogan and Thomas Fahey), died here that day. The wind had veered and the
ice of course went out with it. Marchs' body was the only one recovered and I can remember so well
the older one's telling of the day the 'little steam boat; came in the harbor with the body of Young
March, his was the only one recovered. You may depend that this was a sad time in Northern Bay."
Also see Ed Chafe's description which is part of Bernard Hogan's record. Bernard was the sole
survivor of the tragedy.

March "Bishop", born 13 Jul 1863 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland;
christened 21 Jul 1863 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; died 5 Nov 1939 in
Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Notes: Sources: Matt Mullaly and Raelene Earle Note: Raelene
indicates that the DOB was 21 Jul 1863. Obituary: Bishop March was born at Northern Bay on July
13, 1863. He attended school there until he was fourteen years old. He used to assist his father, Simon
March, an enterprising businessman, and from him acquired those sound and thorough principles of
order and method which later him so conspicuous in his ecclesiastical career. He entered St. Patrick's
Hall in 1877, and in the following year, St. Bonaventure's College where he pursued his studies with
marked success. From St. Bonaventure's , he proceeded to Assumption College, near Montreal, where
he spent two years, and in 1881 went to the College of St. Sulpice, Montreal. In 1882 he went to
Propaganda College, Rome. Where he was ordained Priest on March 16, 1889, arriving in
Newfoundland in June. Father March's first appointment was as a curate at Harbor Grace, in 1889.
For many years he did missionary work in several parts of the extensive Diocese, including Labrador.
He was consecrated Bishop of Harbor Grace on November 4, 1906, by His Grace, Archbishop
Howley. The sermon on that occasion was preached by Monsignor McCarthy, an eloquent speaker.
The celebration was a unique event as it marked the first occasion that a native of Newfoundland was
consecrated Bishop of Harbor Grace. Bishop March quietly observed, on March 16, 1939, the Golden
Jubilee of his ordination to the Priesthood. It was his wish that there be no public demonstration.
However, the spontaneous response on that occasion not alone from the Clergy, but also from various
sections of the public, bore testimony to the love and esteem in which Bishop March was held
throughout Newfoundland. Bishop March died at the palace here on January 12 1940. The morning of
his death he was up at his usual hour and celebrated Mass- a fitting climax to a lifetime of service in
God's vineyard, as he began for the last time with the words: "I will go unto the alter of God, to God
Who giveth joy to my youth." At one p.m.. as he was being called to lunch it was found that he was
dead, having passed away about half an hour earlier. The funeral services were held on January 16.
The congregation representing all classes and creeds from many parts of Newfoundland, was the
largest ever seen here. Special arrangements had been made by the Newfoundland Railway, and a
train arrived at Harbor Grace at 11 a.m. with over three hundred passengers. The Mass of Requiem
began at 11:30 o'clock with Most Reverend E. P. Roche D.D., Archbishop of St. John's occupying the
Episcopal throne, and attended by Right Rev. F.D. McCarthy P. A., V.G. Right Rev. J. Murphy, P .P.
17
Joseph F. Petrie, Founding Member, Friends of Irish Research
and Right Rev, T. J. Flynn. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Wm. Finn, P. P. Grand Falls with Rev.
M. F. Dinn, P.P., North River, as deacon and Rev. M. P. Dwyer. P.P. Harbor Main, as sub-deacon.
Rev. J. M. O'Neill and Rev F. P. Meaney of Immaculate Conception Cathedral acted a Master of
Ceremonies. The panegyric to the memory of the late Bishop was delivered by His Grace the
Archbishop.

Edward-Vincent Chafe indicates that Bernard was the boat
owner and only survivor of the tragic seal hunt that killed his nephew
Richard Fahey, and his cousins Willie March, Patrick Hogan
and Martin Hogan on Good Friday weekend of 1880.
Ed in his book entitled “A History of Corpus Christi Parish
Northern Bay” describes the tragedy on pages 107-8.
His description follows:
"During the nineteenth century, Newfoundland experienced the pressures of a
growing population and stagnation in the cod fishery. To help supplement
their incomes many men went sea) hunting each spring.
On the morning of 27 March 1880, Bernard Hogan prepared his punt for a
short trip out into the bay. Some seals had been driven close to shore near
Northern Bay. Although it was Good Friday, Bernard had several mouths
at home to keep fed. Accompanying him on the trip were three young
cousins: Martin Hogan, 17 years, and Patrick Hogan, 19 years,
sons of Maurice Hogan and Jane O'Flaherty; William March, 21 years,
son of Simeon March and Cecily Hogan; and nephew Richard Fahey, 17 years.
The crew of five quickly filled the punt to the brim and decided to head home.
The wind which had been blowing from the southward all morning had now
veered around and off from the northwest. The ice began to move and
the punt drifted from shore. Vainly, the men attempted to guide the punt
toward a body of water which had opened in the middle of the bay.
Thoroughly exhausted and cold the men decided to make a shelter for the
night. Removing the seals from the punt onto the ice, they turned the boat
on its side and huddled beneath waiting for help from shore. The next
morning there was no relief in sight, so the men began working toward
Cape St. Francis.
After traveling for an hour one of the Hogan boys collapsed on the ice.
The four remaining men struggled on. Their only food was a biscuit
which Willie March, shared with his companions. The second Hogan
boy gave up a few miles later. Soon afterwards young Fahey became
ice blind, and said, "Uncle, I cannot see your tracks, I must lie down."
The two survivors trudged on.
Bernard Hogan was able to kill two seals and ate their hearts. Young
Willie was too weak to eat and had to be carried by Hogan. At last
they succeeded in reaching Cripple Cove on Saturday evening just
before sunset. There they found an old fishing shack, but it offered
no refuge as the men were unable to build a fire. Willie March was
on the verge of collapsing. They decided to head to the lighthouse
less than a mile away.
The journey proved too much for Willie March. Unable to go any further,
Willie was instructed to keep moving about until Hogan could send
25
Joseph F. Petrie, Founding Member, Friends of Irish Research
help from the lighthouse. Bernard Hogan collapsed upon reaching
the lighthouse, but not before telling the keeper that he left a dying
man on the ice near Cripple Cove. A boat and crew quickly headed t
o the scene but they were unable to find him in the darkness. Early
Easter morning the steamer HERCULES arrived at Cape St. Francis.
Bernard Hogan had recovered enough to show them where he had
left Willie March. The body was found and conveyed to Northern Bay
with the steamer's flag at half-mast.
A few days later the body of Martin Hogan was found on an ice-pan
four miles from St. John's Narrows. The body of Patrick Hogan was
discovered on the ice off Toad's Cove. Bernard Hogan lived to a ripe
old age. However, as a result of the ordeal his hair turned completely
white."

Notes:
1. It does not necessarily mean that the people not listed in the 1921 census had died, they may have moved away from
home. More work has to be done on these files.
2. I noticed that in addition to Mary's children living with M & B at the 1935 census, Leo and Vince were still living at
home and listed as single.
3. The dates listed above are baptism dates, the birth date was rarely shown on the records. It seems the children were
baptized at the earliest opportunity, sometimes day of birth, sometimes weeks or months later. It depended on the travels
of the parish priest.

59. William Richard4
Tobin "WR" (Richard Francis3
, Mary2
Hogan, William1
), born 27 Aug 1870 in Argentia,
Newfoundland; christened 1870 in Channel, Newfoundland; died 14 Dec 1922 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,
Canada; buried 17 Dec 1922 in Holy Cross, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. He married on 12 Sep
1900 in St Joseph's, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada Mary Ann Camus "Nan", born 12 Nov 1870 in
North Sydney (Sydney Mines) , Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 1 Nov 1917 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova
Scotia, Canada; buried 4 Nov 1917 in Holy Cross, North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, daughter of Martin
Adolphe Camus "Adolph Cames" and Lucy Boutilier.
Notes for William Richard Tobin "WR"
According to my aunt May Tobin, William (aka WR) was born in Argentia, Newfoundland. As she
told it, her grandparents were returning via their boat to their home in Channel
from visiting family in eastern Newfoundland when great grandmother went into labor.
They landed in Argentia Newfoundland where my Aunt May claimed that WR was born.
Grandfather listed Channel as his birthplace on official documents.
I have a copy of his Baptismal Certificate from Channel.
WR and his sister Mary Elizabeth were the only children born in Newfoundland.
The rest of the children were born in North Sydney.
WR attended Dalhousie until he was 20. I think he left to join the service and
I think that he was a veteran of the Boer War in South Africa and maybe even
saw action in South Africa. (I can't confirm it!) His grave in
Holy Cross Cemetery in North Sydney has a marker for the United
Empire Service League which indicates that he spent some time in the service.
After leaving Dalhousie he read for the Bar. On October 5, 1893, the CASKET
reported that he passed his Law Exams.
On July 23, 1895, the CASKET reported that he took the FINAL Law Exams.
On Sept. 19, 1895, the CASKET reported that he passed the FINAL Law Exams.
On October 24, 1895, the CASKET reported that he was admitted to the Bar on
October 17, 1895.
In 1896, he advertised that he was a Barrister - Solicitor - Attorney at Law -
Conveyancer practicing across from the Hotel Vendome in North Sydney.
In North Sydney, he was a Councilor.

Joseph F. Petrie, Founding Member, Friends of Irish Research
Sometime about 1901 - 1902, he moved to Glace Bay. I'm speculating that
Grandfather wanted to move on because Glace Bay was starting to boom,
because he and his wife had lost their first child, a son (buried in Old St.
Joseph's) and because his father died about 1900 - 1901.
In 1902, he was a member of the Glace Bay Rugby Team, the championship team.
He was an Alderman in Glace Bay.
He was the town solicitor.
He was a Commissioner (an appointed member) of the Glace Bay School Board.
In 1907, he was visiting his mother at her Archbold S tNorth Sydney home when he noticed fire coming from St.
Joseph's Catholic Church on Convent St. According to my aunt, grandfather raced to the church and saved the sacred
vessels.
Mother and my aunt always thought that his death in 1922 was sudden. In reality,
he died of a heart condition that had been diagnosed about a year before.
He was stricken in the Court Room and taken to his home (on the way to
St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay). He died before he reached the hospital.
Interestingly, the Death Certificate and Dooley Funeral Home records indicate that
Grandfather was born in North Sydney in March 1870. (The Dooley record
was the source of the Death Certificate.) I think that the oral history was correct and
have always used it

Notes for Mary Ann Camus "Nan"
In the Diocese of Antigonish database, for her marriage to WR Tobin her surname was recorded as Cames.
Children of William Richard Tobin "WR" and Mary Ann Camus "Nan" were as follows:
241 i Douglas Anselm5
Tobin, born 1901; died 1901 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada;
buried in Old St. Joseph's (Goat Hill), North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Notes:
Douglas Anselm is buried with his grandfather Tobin.
242 ii Mary Aloysia5
Tobin "May", born 22 Jun 1902 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada;
christened 29 Jun 1903 in St Anne's, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died 25 Dec
1985 in Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; buried 28 Dec 1985 in Holy Cross, North Sydney,
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Notes: May Tobin was the true genealogist of the North Sydney
Tobins. When she was twelve, she was inoculated against diseases that were brought back to Canada
by returning soldiers. As a result of an allergic reaction to the inoculation, May was left almost
totally visually impaired. Within ten years, she lost both parents while being educated at Mount Saint
Vincent in Halifax. Financial difficulties due to the death of her father, forced May to leave the
Mount and live at the School for the Blind in Halifax. From there, she completed her Normal School
education. She taught French at the School for the Blind for over 40 years. She completed her
career in Middle Musquoduobit. May established a three year cycle of: a summer of school, a
summer with my family, a summer of travel to wonderful places - the world capitals in Europe, the
shrines in Europe, shrines in Ireland, major cities in Canada and the USA. Her last international trip
in the early 1980s was to Australia and Fiji. May taught me French. I was so fluent that I took 2

years of High School French in the same year. Her Christmases and other holidays were normally
spent either with Ted and Nonie Lohnes or with the MacIntyres in Halifax. (Nonie was a Tobin first
cousin and they traveled together after Ted died.) When she finally retired after 50 years of teaching,
she retired with her Normal School Certificate, a Bachelors, and enough credits for a Masters. Not
long after she retired, she was unable to read. She had readers and writers - she still corresponded
with a legion of friends. At my urging, she wrote the oral history on both of my parents' families. May
was the best family genealogist that I have ever been exposed to. Her oral histories were amazingly
accurate. After she retired from teaching, she retired to St. Patrick's Manor in Halifax. She died there
on Christmas Day, 1985. Source: Joe Petrie
243 iii Loretta Elizabeth5
Tobin "Ethel", born 7 Mar 1904 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,
Canada; christened 13 Mar 1904 in St Anne's, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada; died
22 Jan 1979 in Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 25 Jan 1979 in Mount St. Benedict,
Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. Notes: My mother was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Mom
was christened at St. Anne's in Glace Bay, Because of her mother's illness (breast cancer), Mom was
sent to Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax as a teenager. She graduated in 1921 at age 17.
After she graduated in 1921 she attended Mount Saint Vincent College. She also began reading for
the Bar. The game plan was to join her father in his law firm when she graduated from college in
1924. In 1922, when her father passed away, she was a sophomore at Mount St. Vincent College.
She completed the year and returned to Glace Bay to teach at St. Anne's. She taught at St. Anne's
until 1926. During her summer vacations from 1922 to 1925, she worked for the Dominion Coal
Company in Glace Bay. In 1926, because of the miner's strike, Mom left Glace Bay to work in
Boston for the summer-time. She stayed in Boston. Mom met Leo Petrie, from Dominion, married
him and had 5 pregnancies. In 1936, the Petrie family moved to Dedham where she raised her 3 sons.
On January 16, 1939. she was naturalized under the name of Lorretta Elizabeth Petrie. In 1946, after I
started school, Mom returned to work. She had a variety of jobs. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at
Rosen'sHardware. She was a bookkeeper and clerk at North American Aluminum. She was a partner
at Atlantic Aluminum. She was a clerk at Tobe Deutchmann Electronics. She was a cashier at Stop
and Shop. She was a bookkeeper at the Dedham Transcript and at Ziegler's Market. In addition, she
was a substitute teacher in the Dedham school system. Also, she demonstrated consumer products for
two manufacturers at local retail grocery stores. She also taught at home - private tutoring neighbor's
children and her kids. It was a pro bono, volunteer activity which she loved. Our house was always
full of relatives and friends. Often, we kids would go to bed and wake up the next day on couches
because our parents needed beds for guests to sleep in. My Mom's sister stayed with us every third
summer. Molly Petrie stayed with us every January and April! Many of Mom's Cape Breton cousins
often visited. In the 1950s, Mom became active in the local chapter of the Mount Saint Vincent's
Alumnae Association. For over two decades she served as President or as another officer in the local
chapter. Hobbies: Playing cards, teaching her 10 grandchildren to play cards, ironing, crossword
puzzles. reading novels, and writing poetry. Mom died in her sleep of a stroke. Source: Joe Petrie

Notes for John Francis Tobin
Where do I start to write about Uncle John!
Uncle John worked in the retail and wholesale food business most of his adult
life. In North Sydney, he worked in the family and his business. (His father operated
a Schooner between Channel, North Sydney and Miquelon-St. Pierre. His father
appeared to be based in Miquelon.)
On Nov 7, 1923, his family crossed the border at Vanceboro Maine on their way to Boston.
The move was long planned - discussed with his friends and family for at least a year.
Uncle John was employed by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P).
He was a Store Manager and eventually moved to the regional headquarters on
37
Joseph F. Petrie, Founding Member, Friends of Irish Research
Atlantic Avenue in Boston. After he retired from the A&P, he worked part-time
as a salesman for Statler Tissue Company, a manufacturer of paper napkins,
paper towels etc.
While I was in high school, because I used to visit him and Aunt Agatha in
their home in Watertown, I had a special relationship with them. Until I saw
him on his death bed, I had never seen him without a starched shirt and a tie.
Because Mom worked part-time for him at Statler and because I often travelled
with Mom and he when he had her working as a "Demonstrator" for him in a store
Manchester NH, I'd stay at St. Anselm College with other relatives of the
priests. I probably knew him best!
Our family was a frequent visitor to their house in Somerville and in
Watertown. I suspect that the family dreaded seeing our family arrive because
we three boys were hellions. I thought that the Watertown house was great
because one could see Oakley Golf Course.
Uncle John occasionally had the chore of burying his siblings. It took a
special person to attend to all the details. He buried my grandfather and his
sister Josephine (Aunt Josie).
After Aunt Agatha died, Uncle John lived with his daughter Tippi.

Children of John Francis Tobin and Catherine Agatha MacIsaac "Agatha" were as follows:
247 i Pierce John5
Tobin "Fr. Ben", born 12 Sep 1919 in North Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia,
Canada; died 21 Mar 1984 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA; buried 24 Mar 1984 in St
Leander's Cemetery, St. Anselm Abbey, Bedford, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, USA. Notes:
Father Benediict J. Tobin, OSB was a Benedictine priest at St. Anselm Abbey in Bedford, NH. Father
Ben was named Pierce after his granduncle Pierce (who in turn as was the Irish custom was probably
named for his grandfather). At a very early age, Father Ben rebelled at being called Percy and
announced that he wanted to be called Jackie. He attended school in North Sydney, Somerville, and
at Boston College High School in Boston. He went on to Boston College from BC High. After 2
years at Boston College, he left to enter the priesthood. He graduated from St. Anselm College in
Manchester NH. Jackie always wanted to become a priest and applied for the Jesuits while at Boston
College. He was not accepted - too many applicants and not enough facilities. One day that summer,
he gave two Nuns a ride and in the conversation one remarked that he should try the Benedictines at
St. Anselm Monastery in Manchester NH. He and two friends applied, were accepted, professed
vowas together, and were ordained together in Manchester NH on May 30. 1946. His first Solemn
Mass was on June 9, 1946. Father Ben took the vow of Stability, forever linking him to St. Anselm
Abbey. During the period before his ordination, he took assignments in New Jersey along with other
monks of St. Anselm. Fathers Justin Mahoney, Jeremiah Ahearn, Andrew Lavallee, Felix Pepin,
Charles Tucke, and Benedict Tobin, monks of Saint Anselm, all became much loved confreres in
both Newark and Morristown. He did graduate work in the Classics in Canada and taught Latin at St.
Anselm College from the 40s into the 60s. He also did part-time parish work in New Hampshire. One
year he built an out-door skating rink at St Anselm College. (The site is where the Library Building
was built.) In the 1960s, he took parish assignments in Louisiana and in Iowa. After completing the
parish assignments, he lived with his sister's family in Massachusetts - because the new Abbot
thought that he had renounced his vow of Stability and permantly left the Benedictine Order. After
he returned to the Abbey, he was a frequent guest at my parents' house. After my Dad died, because
Mom did not drive, he and my Mom were frequently transported to St. Mary's in Dedham for him to
say Mass by friends and Father Ben and Mom even used the Senior Citizen Bus for transportation for
him to say Mass.. In the latter part of his life, he was frequently hospitalized in Boston at St. John of
God Hospital and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. For the last few years of his adult life, he probably spent
more time in Boston hospital than at the Monastery. Father Benedict died in Boston and is buried in
St. Leander's Cemetery at St. Anselm's Abbey in Bedford, New Hampshire. Father Ben never became
an US citizen. Source: Joe Petrie, AB, St. Anselm's College, Class of 1961

in New York and Pennsylvania.

loved to be around. She was talented - sang, danced played musical instruments etc. She met her
husband Jim, a teacher in Boston, when he was entertaining at a restaurant. They met rather late in
both the lives. They had 3 children, their two boys had learning disabilities. Tippi's attitude was that
God sends Special People only to Special People!

Dec 1882; died 15 Oct 1949 in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Notes: Source:
Matt Mullaly Biographical Sketch in the CBGHA Archives: WILLIAM J. HINCHEY While
transmitting to future generations the chronicle of such a life as that of William J. Hinchey, well
known and successful merchant of New Waterford, Cape Breton County, it is with the hope of
instill9ing into the minds of those who come after the important lesson that honor and station are sure
rewards of individual exertion. Mr. Hinchey was born at Northern Bay, Newfoundland, September
10, 1882. He is a son of Patrick Hinchey, also born at that place. Morgan Hinchey, the grandfather,
was born in Ireland, from which country he came to Newfoundland in an early day and located at
Northern Bay where he followed fishing and farming. The father of our subject grew to manhood in
that vicinity and he followed the sea for a livelihood, becoming a master mariner, and he is still at
Northern Bay, Newfoundland. His family consists of seven children of whom the subject of this
sketch is the eldest. The father made it a point to give his children proper educational advantages.
William J. Hinchey grew up in his native community and there attended the public schools, after
which he engaged in fishing for one year, then came to Nova Scotia, landing in North Sydney, but
only spent a week there, going to Sydney. A week later we find him in Reserve Mines and there he
became a clerk in the warehouse of the Dominion Coal Company, but later went to work in the mines.
During these years he gave all his spare time to study, going to night school, and in this manner he
completed a course in mining in the International Correspondence schools. After five years at Reserve
Mines he went to Dominion and took charge of a machine which he operated for five years, during
which period he took interests in various business ventures in which he was successful, and while in
Dominion he was director in the Workman’s Store Company Ltd., managed by Alexander McMullen.
In 1908 when the present town of New Waterford was started, he engaged in the real estate business,
also opened a small grocery store, with a partner, who died in 1911, just as they had completed the
present store, seventy by thirty feet, three stories high. Our subject purchased the interest in the store
which his partner had held, and has since conducted the store alone. He has been very successful and
has built up a large and rapidly growing trade through his industry and honesty. In 1914 he opened a
branch store at No. 17, New Victoria, which was a successful venture. His annual business now
amounts to one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. This is a most commendable record for so
young a man, who started in this life on his own resources and continued without assistance from
anyone. He has valuable real estate holdings in New Waterford and other places. Mr. Hinchey was
married June 4, 1907, to Clara Petrie, of New Waterford. She is a daughter of M. J. Petrie, of New
Victoria. Four children have been born to our subject and wife, namely: Patrick, Michael Joseph,
Theresa, and John. Politically, Mr. Hinchey is a Liberal. Fraternally, he belongs to the Catholic
Mutual Benefit Association.

Obituary from: www.chebucto.org/Newspaper-Obits/news-1922-e.shtml
Supt. P. J. O'NEILL of the constabulary Department received a cable from Brooklyn, New York, yesterday forenoon
announcing that his father-in-law, Mr. James O'NEILL had passed away in the early hours of the morning.
Mr. O'NEILL was a native of Bay de Verde in which place he lived and grew to manhood. He then removed to
Northern Bay and niarried Miss Bessie MARCH, daughter of the late Simon MARCH, merchant of that place. He was
successfully carried on a business there for a number of years. Twenty years ago he went to Nova Scotia, and after a
couple of years stay in that Province he removed to Brooklyn, New York, where he has been living ever since, engaged in
his trade which he learned at St. John's, Newfoundland, in his early manhood, that of a carpenter and Joiner. Two years
ago he, with Mrs. O'NEILL, visited Newfoundland and spent an extended Holiday with his daughter and other relatives.
For some months he has been suffering from heart trouble and his daughter, Mrs. P. J. O'NEILL, and his son, Rev. Father
O'NEILL of Hr. Grace, were called to visit him about a month ago. It was thought that the attack would not prove fatal as
about two weeks ago, letters were received which gave every hope, through change of medical attendance, for recovery,
but such was not to be, and yesterday morning he passed away, regretted by numerous friends in Newfoundland and also
in the place that he made his home on the past fifteen years. He is survived by his wife, who as stated above, was Miss
Bessie MARCH of Northern
Bay, a sister of His Lordship Bishop MARCH of Harbor Grace, and Mr. James MARCH of Northern Bay and Miss.

Joan wrote: Grampa Butler had numerous jobs. He was a cook in a lumber camp in Newfoundland
and also ran a hotel (Boarding house?) in St. John's. I think they came from St. John's when they
came to Cape Breton. I think he worked around the washhouse (or giving out the pit lamps) for the
Dominion Coal Company. (From Rod Hart's letter, Summer, 1994) In the summer of 1995, Marie
Butler Bigley and I found the marriage record at St. Anne's Church. According to it, William Butler
was born in St. John's Newfoundland in 1874. At the time of his marriage to Margaret, he was
residing in New Aberdeen. Witness to the marriage were Angus McNeil and Agnes Butler. License
#1802 So was he born in 1879 or 1874??? In Northern Bay or St. John's????? His obituary was in the
Cape Breton Post, Monday, August 28, 1961 Glace Bay - William M. Butler 82 died at the family
home 1 John Street, Sunday. A native of Newfoundland, Mr. Butler came here 65 years ago. He lived
in Reserve Mines for a while and then took up residence in Glace Bay. Mr. Butler was a member of
St. Anne's Parish and when younger was active in the affairs of the parish. He was a member of the
A. O. H. Mr. Butler was employed with Dominion Coal Company until twenty years ago when he
was superannuated. Twice married, he was predeceased by both wives, the former Mary Rice and
Margaret MacNeil. Two daughters and two sons survive. They are Mrs. Agnes Hart at home, Miss
Helen Butler, R.N. of Spokane, Washington and William G. and John both of Glace Bay. Two
brothers also survive, Joseph in Montreal and John in Newfoundland. There are 17 grandchildren and

Notes for BERNARD PATRICK BUTLER: According to family stories, Bernie was a professional
bum. He worked for the circus, etc. and spent a lot of time up around Montreal. He would ride the
trains or stowaway on ships to get around. One time Grampa Butler heard a radio newas flash that
the Mounties were looking for a stowaway who got off a ship in Halifax. He said: " I bet that's
Bernie!" and sure enough the next day Bernie arrived. We think Bernie is buried in Montreal. (Taken
from Rod Hart's letter written to Joan in the summer of 1994)) This is taken from an e-mail message
received by Joan Butler from Denise Butler Miller on April 2, 1998: Bernard Butler...still don't have a
birthdate for the elusive old guy, but he died at Christie Street Hospital in Toronto. He is buried at
Mt. Hope Cemetery with services for him at St. Peter's Church. Died November 9, 1942 and buried
on November 11, 1942 at age 42. He is in a single plot, in section 22, grave 44, range 29. He must
have bought his plot before he died, as it belonged to his estate. He has a small upright monument
which was erected by the Dept of Defence. He died of acute pulmunary adema. See military papers

Family, Relatives, Friends and Fellow Genealogists:
Your generosity with your records is really appreciated. Any errors that remain are mine.
I owe a lot to my late Aunt Mary A. Tobin of Glace Bay and Halifax and Allie Ahearn of North Sydney, Halifax and Ottawa
who sat with me one evening to tell me about research over decades on the Hogan families. My aunt made numerous
trips to Newfoundland. Despite being extremely visually impaired, her passion for genealogy helped her to amass an
impressive amount of research.
Special thanks to the following for sharing their extensive information: Ed Chafe, CG; Ken Duff; Raelene Earle; James
Fleming; Tammy Lawlor; and Professor Paul O’Neill. I have two of Ed’s books. I read one of Paul’s when visiting
Newfoundland a few years ago.
Also, special thanks to the following cousins for sharing massive amounts of their research on their Hogan branches:
Sister Joan Butler, Arthur J. Doyle, Leo McCann, Jim McCarthy, and Matt Mullaly. Leo McCann provided the McCann
branch of the Hogan family (a branch that I totally missed) and vital input on church and cemetery records on Hogans,
Tobins, Doyles, Oliver and McCanns that he collected. Leo also pointed out lots of my errors.
Finally, my cousins Violet Pike Fitzpatrick and Agnes McCarthy Ebbs provided information on their families. Agnes invited
us back to Northern Bay for a house tour of my great, great grandparents’ house.
Web Sites:
Newfoundland Grand Banks for Parish Information, Voters Lists, Directories and other Census Substitutes;
Ancestry Library for Censuses, Immigration, Passenger Manifests, Naturalizations, and Vital Information with access to
source documents, (I am comfortable with the software especially because most Canadian Libraries have access to it);
Automated Census of Canada for 1851, 1852, 1901 and 1911 Censuses (lots of Newfoundlanders moved to other
provinces);
Heritage Quest On-Line for US Census information (I prefer it to Ancestry Library because it is friendlier);
AmericanAncestors.org for Massachusetts Vital Information;
CBGEN.org for Obituaries, Cemetery records, Funeral Home records, Church Censuses, Parish records and lots more;
Family Search for Vital Information and access to source documents;
FamilySearch for images of source records;
FamilySearch Collections List and FamilySearch Community Trees for Antigonish Catholic Diocese records, principally for
birth, marriage and christening information (I prefer Collections List because the Search forms are friendlier);
Novascotiagenealogy for Birth, Marriage, Death and Burial records; and
Canadiana.
