Nicholas Johann Herrmann and Fenka Catherina Dickmann (spelling uncertain) were each born inGermany in the early 1830s and emigrated independently to the United States. They were married inApril 1856 in Fosterburg, IL, and raised their family there. Their descendants are now spread throughoutmany areas of the United States.

1. Nicholas Johann1 Herrmann, born 11 Apr 1830, in Suderheistedt, Holstein, died 11 Mar 1888, inFosterburg, Madison County, IL. He married Fenka Catherina Dieckmann 1 Apr 1856, in Fosterburg,Madison County, IL. Fenka Catherina Dieckmann was born 16 Nov 1834, in Essen or Emden(Hanover?), Germany, died 11 May 1907, in Fosterburg, Madison County, IL.

Fenka and Nicholas lived in Dorchester, Illinois after they were married and later moved to a farm nearFosterburg, Illinois. According to family lore, Nicholas may have stayed in Bettendorf, Iowa to visitrelatives before he was married and moved to Illinois. Nicholas was the first person to be embalmed inAlton, IL. The funeral cost $10.00.

Fenka (or Fenke) Catherina Dickman(n) or Dieckmann was commonly known as Frances. She died atage of 72 due to fecal obstruction. According to family lore Fenka arrived alone in New Orleans at about19 years of age (about 1853). However, search of the volumes of "Germans to American - List ofPassengers arriving in U. S. Ports" for the years 1850-1860 disclosed only one New Orleans entry forDickmann and none for other versions of the name. The family of Wilhelm Dickmann (age 53) arrivedon 24 Jun 1853 from Bremen aboard the Ernestine, bound for St. Louis. The group included Fenka (18),together with Telke (45), Catharina (16), Wilhelm (15), Leonard (9), Eberhard (6), and Wilbrand (24).Quite possibly family lore is incorrect in the belief that Fenka traveled alone.

John DeWitt Robertson married Laura Gore in 1862 or before, with whom he had six children. Theresaand John lived in Madison County, Illinois, until 1888 when they moved close to Sims, Illinois wherethey farmed. John served in Company F, 7 Division Illinois during the Civil War. Theresa and Johnwere members of the Baptist church. They were buried on the ground that John donated to the cemetery.

John Newton served in the Spanish-American War in Company H, Illinois. He wasshot by a Sioux Indian or half-breed in Maramie, Oklahoma, on 10 February 1910.

3. John G.2 Herrman (Nicholas Johann1), born 14 Sep 1864, in Dorchester, Macoupin County, IL, died13 Dec 1945, in Deadwood, Lawrence County, SD. He married Maria Josephine Dingerson 14 May1890, in Fosterburg, Madison County IL. She was the daughter of Simon August Dingerson and Wilhemina Caroline Nagel. Maria Josephine Dingerson was born 2 Jun 1867, in Staunton, IL, died Oct1927, in Hilland (Philip), Haakon County, SD.

John owned property in Illinois. In the spring of 1906 he filed a claim in South Dakota, Homestead

Claim Stanley County N.W. Section 6, Township 4N-19E. He left for South Dakota with Henry Burjes,Alf Woods and Ben Hermann. Axel Olson located the property in South Dakota for them and pickedthem up at the train in Pierre. In the fall of 1906 John loaded an immigration car at Brighton. Reubenremembered loading the last load. In October of 1907, Josephine, Nelson, Jo, Wesley and Reuben wentto South Dakota. Edna and Roy stayed in Illinois, Edna with Aunt Emma Hunt and Roy with GrandmaCaroline Dingerson and attended school. They went to South Dakota the following year. Edna startedteaching school in a tar paper claim shack in Ash Creek Township. The school was called BuckAcademy, which was named by Mrs. Burjes. Edna taught school for several years on an 8th gradecertificate until she was married. John and Josephine's marriage license reads that John was a laborer ina plough factory at the age of 25 or 26. Josephine was 23 years of age when they were married.Witnesses to the marriage were William Hermann and Emma Kamper. They where married by CharlesBremicker, minister of the Presbyterian Church. When John and Josephine were first married they livedin Alton, IL. where John did carpentry work. Edna was born when they were living in Alton. GrandmaHerrmann thought it was terrible that her son lived in town so John and Josephine moved east ofGrandma Dingerson's, where they probably rented a house. Roy was born there and later they moved aquarter mile east of Grandma Herrmann's, Will's place, which was a log house. Nelson was born there.While living at Will's, John bought 65 acres and built a house. The house had closets and an attic. Jo,Wesley, and Reuben were born in the new house. John tore down the chicken house and took it to SouthDakota. His first year in South Dakota John along with Charlie Price stayed at the Rood house on AshCreek, in the same place that Dale Keyser lived later. Charlie did chores because the Roods were in FortPierre, where Mr Rood was Stanley County Treasurer. John built his claim shack that winter.

The birth certificates of her older children had her name as 'Maria Josephine Herrman'. Later she signedher name as 'Mary'.

She was the daughter of Hans Engebretsonand Anna Savold. Helen Engebretson was born 22 Jan 1895, in Selby, WalworthCounty, SD, died 21 Apr 1972, in Sun City, Maricopa County, AZ.

Wesley was the auditor of Haakon County. Wesley was elected StateRepresentative from Jackson County in 1949. He was defeated by Marvin Hicks in1955, after which he took a job as state auditor. On his third job Wesley askedHelen to help him with adding. His boss, John C. Penny, who was the statecontroller, happened by and saw Helen there and put her on the payroll.

He married Johanna FohlkeaBurjes 8 Sep 1898, in Fosterburg, Madison County, IL. She was the daughter of Johann Volkmar Bürjesand Hilke Ajedina Fenke Wübkelina Remmers. Johanna Fohlkea Burjes was born 20 Jul 1866, inDetern, Ostfriesland, died 23 Aug 1937, in Alton, Madison County, IL.

Otto Hermann was captain of police and city treasurer of Alton, IL. He later became sheriff of MadisonCounty, IL. He was also a farmer and teacher. He died at the age of 65 of coronary thrombosis and alung embolism.

He married KatherineLouise Heiens 2 Mar 1898, in Alton, Madison County, IL. She was the daughter of Heye Heiens and Caroline Griennemeier. Katherine Louise Heiens was born 26 Dec 1875, in Fosterburg, MadisonCounty, IL, died 4 Jan 1952, in Alton, Madison County, IL (buried at Fosterburg, Madison County, IL).

Ben was born and raised on the old Herrmann homestead in Fosterburg, Illinois. His father died whenBen was a boy. Ben and Katherine moved to Brookings, SD, in about 1907 because of Katherine's poorhealth. Ben got a job at the college in the agriculture department. He was sent to Eureka, SD, to do plotfarming, where he planted 1/4-acre plots of different kinds of seeds, then sent the college reports on theproduction of each. From there they moved to Leola, SD, where Ben ran a large ranch for a man by thename of Nickerbacker. They lived there for a couple of years, then moved to Hilland where Benpurchased a farm in 1910. Ben and Katherine decided they didn't like the dry weather as he could neverraise anything. Because of that they moved machinery, stock and furniture by train back to Brookings,SD, and farmed there until 1916, then moved back to Fosterburg. In 1926 Ben retired and he andKatherine moved to Alton. While living in Alton Ben was baliff in a courthouse in Edwardsville. Ben

and Katherine later moved back to their farm until they sold it and then moved to Bunker Hill. Benjaminpassed away at home of a cerebral hemmorage. He had been sick for 18 hours.

Della and Charles separated after which Della cooked on a ranch in Colorado. She went home to visitand while there caught double pneumonia and died.

LeRoy served in World War I, training other soldiers. He was discharged on 24 March 1918.

She was the daughter of Leonodos (Lee) Edwards and Louisa (Jennie) Jane Painter.Viola Edwards was born 31 May 1911, in Hartley, SD, died 12 Jun 2006, in Philip, Haakon County, SD.

Reuben was born at home, which was near Fosterburg, IL. When he was two years old his parents wentto the world's fair in St. Louis and left Wesley and him behind with Mrs Ramus. The other children wentto the fair. He remembered getting into the chicken house when he was 4-6 years old and gettingcovered with chicken lice. On the trip to SD in 1907, the family went from Alton, IL to Chicago onCB&C and then west. Reuben remembered his mother telling him that some other folks were going toSouth Dakota and that their name was Edwards. Raymond Edwards had broken an arm when he hadgotten between two cars. He remembered Leona Edwards singing. They stopped at Brookings to visithis Uncle Ben and Aunt Kate over the week-end. They arrived in Philip on 14 October 1907 on the train.Wesley and Reuben walked up town from the train. There were a few buildings and wooden sidewalks.They saw their father (John) visiting with someone. He was surprised to see them because he wasexpecting them to arrive later in the day. They started out by team and wagon that John had borrowedand camped between the Grindstone Buttes that night. They went the rest of the way to the homesteadthe next day. The claim shack was 14' X 24'. Reuben remembered the roof leaking when it rained allday; pots and pans were everywhere. They moved the beds out from under the drips and stayed in bedall day. Reuben recalled that the whole family went to Philip to the circus in 1912. They went by teamand wagon, and when they arrived the circus tent had blown down. They stayed overnight in the upstairsof the Marietta House, which was 0.5 mile north of where the Courthouse now stands. Reuben sleptcrossways in bed. John built his big house in 1930. Reuben bought a tractor in 1920. Roy left in 1921and got married. Nelson had the cattle. Reuben did the farming from 1926 to 1938. He did custom workwith his threshing machine and combine, which he bought in 1928. He bought cattle and sheep and afterNelson left to go to Oregon in 1939 Reuben ran both grain and cattle.

Eula was about 6 when she moved with her parents from Illinois to South Dakota. The family lived inBrookings, Eureka, Leola, and Hilland; Eula received her education at all these localities. She was about16 when she moved back to Illinois with her parents. Eula was 20 when she married Edgar Feilbach.Eula and Edgar first lived on Edgar's father's farm for five years, then moved to Eula's father's farm forsix years, then back to Edgar's father's farm, which they then bought. They lived there until 1967, whenthey moved to a small place a little west of their farm. Eula gave piano lessons and played in church for

four years before she was married and some after. Later in life she was the organist at their church(Congregationalist).

Mildred attended the Heiens School, which belonged to her mother's family. She graduated from the 9thgrade, after which she attended and graduated from the Browns Business College in Alton. As a youngchild she moved to South Dakota, and later returned to Fosterburg. Mildred "Brownie" recalls that hergrandmother, Caroline Heiens, lived with them in Fosterburg. Around 1907 they moved to South Dakotabecause her mother had malaria and her doctor suggested a change in climate. While they were in SouthDakota Uncle Will Heiens, whose wife had died, and Aunt Hiska Bierbaum and her family lived at theirhome in Fosterburg. Grandma Heiens continued to live in Fosterburg until her death.

William Clayton Krug graduated from Alton High School in January 1925. He attended BrownsBusiness College in Alton and the University of Virginia in 1952-53. He worked at Citizens NationalBank beginning in September 1925, which later became the First National Bank of Alton. He spent therest of his career there, and died of gangrene of the right leg, peripheral vascular disease, and organicbrain syndrome.
