Notes for JOHN L. LADD:Fed. Census 1850 for Wisconsin has this record:John L. Ladd, age 29, male, lumberman, no property value given, b. in NYRacheul Ladd, age 30, female, b. in NYCharles Catchball (or perhaps Catchbull), age 5, male, born in WI [thus, born about1845].(There are indications that persons with the surname of Catchpool or Catchpole wereliving in Wisconsin during that time. Whether this is any clue to the identity of the childis an open question.
There were many other Ladds in WI in 1850 according to this census record.
John held an original patent on 320 acres of land in Grant Co., WI. It was located in W1/2 of SW 1/4 and the S 1/2 of NW 1/4 and S 1/2 of NE 1/4 and N 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Sec.4, Twp. 5N, Range 4 West, Little Grant Township, Grant County, Wisconsin. He boughtit Dec. 15, 1854 and the patent was issued June 1, 1858. It was Cert. No. 22,680. Some ofthis land is now part of the land owned by Edward Klein. The abstract for the Klein farmonly shows the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 part of this land. John purchased this land for $160.On March 3, 1855 he and his wife Rachel mortgaged the N 1/2 of the SE 1/4 part ("andother lands") to the Milwaukee & Mississippi Rail Road Co. for $5000, and sold it ("andother land") to Simeon N. Small on Aug. 7, 1863, subject to the mortgage. How much ofthe other land besides this one tract he sold at the same time is not known in July of1998. Notes for CHARLES HENRY LADD:CHARLES HENRY LADD, according to his military record, volunteered and wasinducted into the Army, Company "G", 6th Regiment of WI, at Madison, WI on Jan. 16,1864 at the age of eighteen years. His residence was given as Grant Co., Boscobel, WI.His rank was Pvt. On July 14, 1865, the following year he mustered out at Jeffersonville,IN. The military muster shows blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, 5'7" tall, and hisoccupation as a farmer.(It should be noted that there is no other indication that the family ever lived in Boscobel.In 1860 John's family lived in Millville, which also is in Grant county. He apparentlywent to Boscobel to make contact with the military and start the induction process.)
On Dec. 10, 1865 Charles Henry Ladd married Henrietta Marie Richmond in Warren,JoDavies Co., IL. Apparently they settled in WI after their marriage. The 1880 Censusshows that their first and second children were born in Wisconsin. The 1880 FederalCensus of West Cherry Township, Montgomery Co., KS lists him as a farmer. Information in the Cherryvale, KS, library states: 1881 Platt West Cherry TownshipOwners: C. H. Ladd; PO Brooks; b IA; to County 1877; "Farmer and dealer ofthoroughbreed cattle". In the 1900 Census he indicates that his father was born inWisconsin. His wife, Henrietta, indicates that her father was born in PA and her motherin OH. Her sister, Dora Orlena Richmond, later lived in California.
According to the Family Bible records, and the 1880 census, they had moved toDickinson Co. in Iowa where two children were born, and then on to Neodesha, KSwhere they lived until 1891. By this time their family has increased to 5 daughters and 5sons.
In the year 1891, Charles and Henrietta moved to Clayton Township, Payne Co., OKwhere they leased land to farm in Indian Territory. Their household goods and some oftheir farming equipment were moved by train. Some of the children and Henrietta alsotravelled by train. However, some of the children, including Irvie [age 8] came with theirfather to help drive the team, Old Baldy and Spot, and herd the livestock over the longtrail.
In the fall of 1892, the family moved to a 160-acre farm near Stillwater. They acquiredthis homestead by trading a team of mules and a wagon for it. About a year later, the lastchild, Ruth Etta, was born in April of 1893.
The Ladd family prospered on the farm near Stillwater. They raised grain and a largegarden. Their cash crop, however, was cotton. Many black laborers, called servants,were used. About 1904, Charles Henry and Henrietta bought a large modern, wooden
frame house in Ripley, OK. [See a photograph in the Ladd Photo Album.] The rest oftheir lives were spent there. Henrietta passed away on January 16, 1918 at the age of 67,and Henry died on February 29, 1924 at the age of 77.
One of the memories of the grandchildren was of their Grandfather Charles Henryvisiting them driving a new car with brass head lamps. It was a Touring Design car withleather straps running from the fenders up each side to the windshield. He locked it witha padlock latched to a large chain run through the wheels.
Charles and Henrietta were sturdy pioneers and courageous enough to help settle one ofthe wild mid-western states, OKLAHOMA.

Information from Gary Gooch on 27 Aug 1997:1880 census showed him living in Cherryvale (Montgomery Co., West Cherry Twp.) KS,occupation, farmer.Cherryvale Libr. had, as of 1881: "1881 Platt West Cherry Township Owners: C. H.Ladd; PO Brooks; B IA; to County 1877; Farmer and dealer of thoroughbreed cattle."1885 KS State census lists the family in W. Cherry Twp.; the 1890 census does not showthem there.1900 Fed. census reports his ftr as born in WI.1910 Fed. census reports the family in Payne Co., OK, Cimmaron Twp.; he reported hisfather was born in New York.Death certificate gives his father's name as John Ladd.Gary includes this short account: "Nila (Ladd) Haskin & Ruby (Ladd) Gooch(granddaughters) say that a man who showed a striking resemblance to Charles Henry'spicture showed up one day and said that he was Charles Henry Ladd's brother. This mansaid that Charles Henry's real name was Catchapaw (Catchabaugh?), and that he wasadopted by the Ladd's at an early age. Nila said that he (the visitor) said that he alwaysgave a magnolia tree to the youngest child of the family, and that she was really lookingforward to the magnolia tree, but that they never heard any more from him. Ruby saidthat he told them that he owned a nursery in Oklahoma City, and that he always gave . . .etc. He spent the night with Everett Ladd."
No definite proof has been made of this event, and other stories have been heard by othercousin lines of the family with different versions of this type of story. These storiesindicate that his last name may have been Cachapaw. This is still undetermined and noproof has been found.
Another possibility could be that Rachel had a previous marriage, and that Charles Henrywas from that marriage, and came to live with John Ladd through the marriage to Rachel.
There is no proof of this, however.

Mary was born on Thanksgiving Day. Her parents, Andrew Gustas “Gust” Anderson andSusan Emily (Coffman) Anderson moved from Bluffton, IN to Central City, NE beforethe birth of their first child in 1876. On Nov. 27, 1892, they moved to Guthrie, OK,remaining there until 1897 when they moved to Perkins, OK. They later lived near Agra,OK.

A STORY ABOUT GRANDMA'S APRON
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along withthat, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful fordrying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, andsometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when theweather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wipedmany a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, itcarried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls. Inthe fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture thatold apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and themen knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-timeapron" that served so many purposes.

The cemetery is one half mile south of Beaver, one half mile west of US 270.September 27, 1917, a group of people formed a corporation known as the PioneerCemetery Association. They agreed to buy ten acres of land from Jessie Mae (Weir)Fickle to be used as a burial ground. There had already been some burials on this land,the first being a man named King. The cemetery record book states that he was an oldRebel from the South. He died in the Jim Thompson Hotel, supposedly from burns, andwas buried on a little knoll southwest of Beaver about 1885. The second and third to beburied there were men named Bennett and Thompson, who were killed by vigilantes in1886 or 1887. Many more burials were made on this site through the years, but the graveswere either unmarked or poorly marked and time has erased almost any sign of thegraves, so there are several “unknown" graves in the present Beaver Cemetery. There areabout 2000 identifiable graves, making this by far the largest cemetery in Beaver County.

I found my grandmother's birth certificate [Ruby Leola (Ladd) Anderson] and it spellsher Mom's name [wife of James Ernest Ladd] different. Instead of Mary Ealen, it islisted as Eland - Gaut. I know that it could be the spelling of the one filling out the formrather than the parents themselves.
I also came across a poem that my Grandmother wrote about her mother. It appears thatshe wrote it soon after her mother died. She titled it, "Mother." Mother dear I'm thinking of you Though we now are far apart,I have your loving image Always here within my heart.
Your smile is here to cheer me When I'm alone and sadAnd to know your love is with me Always makes me feel so glad. To go to the Overton cemetery from Beaver, go west 6 miles on the Airport Road,south 3 miles, west 1, and then south ½ mile. The cemetery is on the west side of theroad. Mr. Overton donated land for this cemetery in the early 1900’s. At one time therewas a Methodist Church located in one corner of the cemetery. There are 25 graves withlegible markers with the oldest being 1908. There are several graves that are marked onlywith a pile of stones or a stick. WPA workers marked some with cement markers, in the‘30s and painted the names on, but the paint has worn away. There were somedepressions that may have been graves, but there were no markers. The last burial was1995.
