Notes for Hendrick Pannebecker: A book, ``De Werken van den Hoog Verlichten Jacob Bril´´or ``The Works of Jacob Bril´´, recently acquired by Pennypacker Mills, contains previously unknown genealogical facts about Hendrick Pannebecker written in his own hand.

ENGLISH TRANSLATIONThis book called the Writings of Jacob Bril [belongs to]Hendrick Pannebacker to who finds it bring it to himwritten this 17 Day of February 1745My wife died November 27, 1739.January 12, 1702, my daughter Martha was born between 12 and 1 o’clock .June 8, 1704, my daughter Catharine was born between 6 and seven.February 14, 1707, my son Adolph was born.March 8, 1710, my son Peter was born.August 27, 1713, my son John was born.June 28, 1716, my daughter Barbara was born.March 5, 1719, Jacob was born between 5 and 6 in the morning.September 26, 1725, my son Henry was born at 6 in the afternoon.October 14, 1699 I Heinrich Pannebeckerfrom Crefelt with Eva Umstat got married.September 2, 1698 I Heinrich Pannebecker arrived in Philadelphia.

Hendrick Pannebecker, the first of the name in Pennsylvania, was born in rural Germany, probably in Flomborn about the 21st day of March , 1674. He is a probable son of Johannes Pfannebecker, but there is no record of him in Germany. Hendrick arrived in Philadelphia, PA on September 2, 1698. He was one of those who sought an asylum from religious persecution and a new field for advancement in Pennsylvania. William Penn made several trips to Germany to recruit families to stock his Pennsylvania colony and Hendrick may have accompanied Penn to America during one of these trips. He was living at Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1699, and probably in that year was married to Eve Umstat, daughter of Hans Peter Umstat and granddaughter of Nicholas Umstat who died at Krefeld on October 4, 1682. She arrived aboard the Francis and Dorothy,on October 12, 1685 (with her parents and siblings; Johannes and Anna Margaretta).

Hendrick moved in 1702 to Skippack & Perkiomen Twp., which was primarily a Mennonite settlement. His wife and most of his children were Mennonites, but Hendrick had connections with the Reformed Church. Hendrick was a surveyor for William Penn and laid out most of the early roads in upper Montgomery County. Hendrick served as the attorney for Matthias Van Bebber for the sale of the lands of the latter in Bebber township and he later bought land in the township and became, along with Van Bebber and Lodowick Christian Sprogell, one of the three Dutch patroons of Pennsylvania.

Hendrick, in addition to being a surveyor and attorney, had a library of many books, understood three languages - Dutch, German, and English, owned seven thousand acres of land, was a skilled mathematician, was a soundly educated person, and was a member of the tile-bakers guild. He signed his name Hendrick and Henry. He wrote in German, also in broken English with Dutch elements. He was living in Limerick, Pennsylvania, on December 11, 1745 with his son, Adolph, but later returned to Skippack where he died on the 4th day of April, 1754, aged eighty years and about two weeks. [Bruce Pennypacker]

Probable son of Johannes Pfannebecker, but no record of him in Flomborn. Married and had a son (1715/1716) before coming to PA. Wife unknown but very likely connected with the Weiant or Weugandt family, as their son was given the unusual name of Weiant. A Weiant family came to PA in 1729 and settled at New Goshenhoppen, where Friedrich also appears in the records in 1736. It seems likely he came about the same time as the Weiants, roughly 1730. Friedrich was a member of the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church and had 1 known child.

She married Anthony Van der Sluys about 1725 in Providence Twp, Philadelphia Co, PA. He died in Nov 1751 in Providence Twp, Philadelphia Co, PA.

Notes for Martha Pannebecker:Martha and her family were the focus of a tug-of-war between the Lutheran preacher Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, who was trying to gain them as converts, and Martha’s father Hendrick Pannebecker who was trying to prevent it. Muhlenberg wrote a long and detailed account of it, quoted in full in the SWP genealogy. He first won over Martha’s husband, then lost him, and regained him on his death bed in 1751. Muhlenberg conducted the funeral service, in which he breathed fire against Hendrick and all others who had tried to interfere. A few months later, February 2, 1752, he baptized the three youngest children as Lutherans in a big public ceremony at the Trappe Lutheran Church. Five year s later, August 18, 1757, he likewise baptized the daughter Ann. And in 1761 he performed the burial service of Martha. Thus in the end Muhlenberg won over the whole family except Henry, and he enjoyed his triumph to the fullest. (Ed Upton)She was born between 12 and 1 o’clock. (Hendrick Pannebecker)

Notes for Catherine Pannebecker:Catharine is listed by Hendrick, in recently discovered documents, as his second child. Most genealogists, including Governor Pennypacker, have a daughter by the name of Susanna listed, but no Catharine. There is no daughter named Susanna listed by Hendrick. Perhaps her name was Catharine Susanna or Susanna Catharine.Possibly, in the far past, someone wrote down the name Susanna instead of Catharine, and all information about Susanna is really about Catharine.Several researchers list a death date for Catherine as 28 May 1710. I have found no sources to verify this, and I find it unlikely that Hendrick would not have listed the death of his daughter in 1710 along with the births of his children and the death of his wife. Therefore, all information that was previously listed for Susanna is listed here for Catherine.

Catherine Pannebecker had the following children:26. i. PETER KEYSER was born in 1733 in Skippack, Montgomery, Pennsylvania,

USA. He died in Mar 1789 in Worcester, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, USA. He married REGINA CASSELBERRY.

Notes for Adolph Pennebacker:Adolph appears often in the public records by the shortened name Oliff or Ollie, sometimes even as Oliver. On the same day he made his will - at about age 52, while still in good health, but shortly after the death of his wife - he also conveyed to his son John his whole farm of 250 acres, on condition that John was to pay the other children £ 50 each after Adolph’s death, and with many rights reserved to Adolph while he lived. These rights in all their detail show that the farm was producing oats and other grains, turnips, and flax; that it had an orchard, gardens, and meadows; that there was a house for Adolph and another for John, plus a spring house and at least two stables, that there were horses and cattle, a wagon, a harrow, and plows. Upon Adolph’s death the real estate valued at £ 579, including his own Bible and the old Umstat Bible. (Ed Upton)

He married Elizabeth Keyser, daughter of Peter Dirck Keyser and Margaret Souplis in 1733. She was born on 20 Jan 1714 in Germantown, Philadelphia Co, PA. She died on 11 Aug 1796.

Notes for Peter Penebacker:Until 1747 Peter lived on 240 acres on Skippack Creek that had been given to him by his father in January 1742. In 1747 he bought from Henry Pawling and others the tract on the Perkiomen that became known as Pennypacker’s mills. It consisted originally of 500 acres and a grist mill. Peter built a fulling mill in 1755, and a saw mill was added later. A census in 1756 showed 100 acres cleared and 25 acres sowed in corn - also 7 horses, 15 sheep, and 14 cattle. Peter bequeathed the mills and all the land on the east side of the Perkiomen to his son Samuel, and the rest to his son William. Peter’s will also contained many provisions for his widow, who was to have certain rights in Samuel’s share of the estate: 2 rooms in the house, half the garden, one of the orchards, use of the well and spring, a horse and a cow of her choice, and as much firewood as she needed. The farmhouse and mills were later owned by Samuel and his descendants until 1900, then by Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker and his descendants until the end of 1980. The property was purchased by Montgomery County in 1981 and was opened as a county museum in 1985.Peter’s Bible, which came into the possession of SWP, contained a good many notations made by Peter, in English. One of the most informative and valuable is this: In the yeare of our Lord 1754 on the 4th Day of April New Steil Dyed my father Henery Penibacker of about a 5 minutes Sickness about 80 years and two weacks old and Left Seven Elive Childes beheind. New Style is in reference to the calendar reform of 1752. The seven living children are those shown on these pages, except for Jacob who died before his father. The number seven, written by Peter, shows that there were no other children of Hendrick, at least none living in 1754.I think Peter was probably a half-way Mennonite, as his father seems to have been before him. Peter was buried in the Mennonite cemetery at Skippack, but the burial service was performed by the Reformed minister Johann Th. Faber. Peter’s wife Elizabeth was from a

The census of 1790 shows Henry with 1 boy under 16 and 3 females, which also suggests children. { Edward Upton}

Most of the readers of this newsletter will remember the discussion about Conrad Pennybaker, who is listed in our family database as having died during the Revolutionary War.

Laurie Baker, a member of our family association, has been researching a link between Conrad Penny Baker, who was a soldier with the King’s Rangers during the Revolutionary War, and our Conrad, a Continental soldier during the Revolution.

Through DNA testing, Laurie and I have established a connection between several members of the Baker family, who are descendants of the Conrad from the British Army and myself, a descendant of the same Pennypacker line as the Continental Army Conrad. This DNA testing, extended to 37 markers, shows that there is a 99.9% probability that the Bakers and I share a common ancestor.

Laurie has found pay records for both Conrads during their time in service. The pay records for Conrad (Continental Army) end before the pay records for Conrad (British Army) begin. There is no overlap in the pay records. The last pay record found is one in St. Augustine in June 1783. This is about the time that the Loyalists were evacuated to the Bahamas.

All of this points to the conclusion that both Conrads were the same person. So far, there has not been a paper trail found to confirm this conclusion.

As Laurie states, ``Possibly, Conrad of the 4th Virginia Regiment was captured and changed sides. I´m told that the British Army was much better fed than the Continentals. It would be easy to understand that i f he didn´t return to his wife and son they would assume he died.´´ How could Conrad return to his former life in the Colonies after switching sides and fighting for the British?

Conrad Penny Baker married and started a family in the Bahamas. ``It would also be understandable that if he found himself in the Bahamas that he would only mention his service in the King’s Rangers, be likely to remarry and also decide that his children and grandchildren would be better off with a different name if they were to migrate back to the United States.´´

So, that is where the story of Conrad stands at this time. Research into this situation continues. I decided to see what I could find out about Conrad’s family prior to the Revolution.Research Notes:Conrad is listed in the slave census in 1834

Notes for Samuel Pannebecker:Residence: Resided at Pennypacker’s Mills, Perkiomen & Skippack Twp . Montgomery Co. PAOccupation: Farmer and Miller

By his father’s will he obtained the homestead and mills and there he passed all but the first few months of his life. Five years of his ownership had not elapsed before the Revolutionary War commenced. The section of country in which these mills were situated became the theatre of most stirring events, and the historic interest which had begun to gather about them in the time of Pastorius and Hite culminated.from the genealogy by Gov S. PennypackerResearch Notes:Samuel inherited the Homestead called the “Pennypacker Mills” from his father, Peter. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington and his Continental Army were headquartered at the Mills from September 26 to October 8, 1777.

Samuel inherited his father’s Bible. Pasted in the front cover is one of the typed copies of General Washington’s congratulatory letter of September 28, 1777, from headquarters camp at Pennypacker Mill of General Gates victory over General Burgoyne.

On the 4th leaf of the Bible translated from German is, “On the 16 day of September, 1777 an army of 30000 men encamped in Skippack Two., burnt all the fences, carried away all the fodder, hay, oats and wheat and took their departure the 8th day of October, 1777. Written as a memorandum for futurity by Samuel Pannebecker.”

Sunday, September 28, 1777 - “In the afternoon we heard fourteen heavy cannon fired. The militia encamped around here beat to arms and expected a battle between the main body of American and a portion of the British on the Skippack Road. The main American Army is only 4 miles to the NE of us on the great Skippack road and twenty-six miles from Philadelphia. We afterwards received information that the American Army had fired fourteen shots in token of joy at the news from the North that the American Army had beaten the British troops under command of Lieut. Gen. Burgoyne and had taken Fort Ticonderoga by stratagem.” Journal of Rev Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg.

Samuel was opposed to the war and quarreled with his friend Muhlenberg because of it.

40. DIRCK4 PENNYBACKER CAPTAIN (John3 Pennebacker, Hendrick2 Pannebecker, Johannes1 Pfannebecker,John3, Hendrick2 Pannebecker, Johannes1 Pfannebecker) was born on 01 Jan 1737 in Bucks Co. PA. He died on 14 Jun 1799 in Pine Forge, Shenandoah Co. VA. He married Hannah De Haven on 03 Mar 1756. She was born on 29 Dec 1737 in Philadelphia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, United States. She died on 02 Apr 1825 in Botetourt County, Virginia, USA.

Notes for Dirck Pennybacker Captain:There is an uncertainty of 3 or 4 years in the dates when Dirck moved from PA to MD and from MD to VA. The tradition as told by a great-grandson and accepted by SWP was that the family left PA in 1778 and arrived in VA in time to celebrate the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, Oct. 1781. But Dirck was taxed on his PA property in 1781, and in 1850 a 69-year-old daughter (Catharine) declared that she had been born in PA. That would be 1781. I am inclined to favor this evidence over the family tradition. Dirck was in any case taxed in Shenandoah Co. VA in 1785 but was not on the list in 1783. { Ed Upton}

Dirck (also spelled Derick or Derrick) Pennybacker was born January 1, 1737 in Pennsylvania to a prosperous and prominent family. He was a son of Col. John Pennebacker and a grandson of Henry (Hendrick) Pannebecker. The spelling of the surname was altered more than once over the generations. Dirck, although a Quaker, served as a captain in the Berks County (Pennsylvania) militia.

Dirck married Hannah DeHaven on March 3, 1756 in Pennsylvania, when he was 19 years old. They had at least 9 children (and at least 64 grandchildren).

On February 3, 1770 Dirck Pennybacker purchased a gristmill and farm on 200 acres in Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania from the estate of William Bird of Birdsboro. Dirck was very prosperous during the Revolutionary War, when his gristmill supplied flour to the Continental Army. However, his business declined when the war ended, and in May 1783 he lost his gristmill and land as a result of a lawsuit over a debt. His land was seized and sold at a sheriff’s sale to pay the debt.

Generation 4 (con't)

At that time, 1783, Dirck and his family left Pennsylvania and moved briefly to Washington County, Maryland near Sharpsburg, where he leased an iron-working establishment. However, within a few months a flood destroyed the operation and Dirck left Maryland for Virginia. According to a deposition made in 1814 by his son Benjamin, Dirck and family arrived in the Shenandoah Valley in [late] 1783.In December of 1783, records show Dirck accepted the results of a survey done to establish the boundaries of a land grant in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He and his family moved onto this land and Dirck built Redwell Furnace on Hawksbill Creek near Luray. Soon he and his family established another forge and iron works business on Smith Creek near New Market, Virginia, which they called Pine Forge.He was in Pine Forge in 1784, as evidenced by a letter he wrote from there to his brother Jacob regarding their father John’s death on June 14, 1784 and the settlement of the estate. The letter, as transcribed in about 1877 by Gov. Samuel W. Pennypacker, who was in possession of the letter at that time, read:

To Jacob Pennybacker, Pine Forge October 16, 1784My advice to you is to Make Sale of the place at any Time when it Suits you but I shall be willing to Make a Sale at any time when Required wich you may Rely on. I will be down in the Spring and expect whe can settle without any farder cost. Any farder I have Nottien to Rite as whe are all well at present. Hoping thes Lines wil find you all in the Same. I Remember my Kind Love to you all spesly to Mother. If the winter should prove faberel [favorable? ] it is Likele I shall be down abought the first of January.Derick PennybackerI should be willing if there could be some Money made up for Samul for I Expect he must want it as he has had Nottien of the Estate yet.

The iron-working businesses were very successful, and Dirck’s descendants started additional iron businesses. The Pennybackers are considered to be the pioneers of the iron working industry. A few stoves can still be found today with the name D. Pennybacker on them. A local census in 1785 reported that Dirck Pennybacker had 64 white souls in his household, which seems like a very large number of people, but probably included workers in his iron business, in addition to sons, daughters, and sons-in-law.Dirck worked as an iron master until his accidental death at age 65. Older histories reported his death as 1799, but his obituary has since been found. It was published in the March 3, 1802 issue of the Winchester Gazette and establishes that his death occurred on February 15, 1802 at Pine Forge. The obituary reads: On the evening of Monday the 15th Derrick Pennybacker, Esq., of Shenandoah was casually [causually? accidentally?] killed by a fall from his horse. The day following his remains were decently interred on his own premises attended by a very numerous concourse of relatives and friends.

His will, written 21 Oct 1798 and proved 1 Apr 1802, was located among the unrecorded wills in the Shenandoah County Clerks Office. Dirck/ Derrick Pennybacker made bequests to his wife Hannah, to his sons Benjamin, Derrick, John, and Abraham, to his daughters Hannah Bird, Caty Pennybacker, and Polly Pennybacker, and to son-in-laws George Mayberry (married to daughter Rebecca) and Isaac Samuels (married to daughter Elizabeth).

Dirck and Hannah’s grandson Isaac Samuels Pennybacker (1805-1847), son of their eldest son Benjamin and his wife Sarah Margaret Samuels, became a well-known lawyer, federal judge, and politician who represented Virginia in the U.S. House from 1837-39 and served as U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1845-47.

x. DITRICH PENNYBACKER.

Notes for Ditrich Pennybacker: Not listed in the long genealogy of SWP, but SWP did not have birth re cords of this family. Ditrich is known only by his appearance on th e tax list of 1784 in Amity Twp. PA, on the same property that had pre viously been taxed to his father Dirck. Possibly there was no Ditrich -the property still belonged to Dirck in 1784, and it was his name th e assessor was trying to write on the list. But I have a hard time be lieving Dirck was still in PA in 1784. In 1850 a 67-year-old daughte r (Mary) declared she had been born in MD. That would be 1783. I a m inclined to believe there really was a son Ditrich, and that he die d soon after 1784 as I have found no record of him. { Ed Upton}

Ontario, Canada, in the peninsula north of Lake Erie.Occupation: Had a 100 acre farm in Canada.The story of Cornelius and Nancy and their move to Canada was told in much detail by Edith Foster in her story; ”In Pursuit of Freedom”, published in 1958 in 6 installments in the Mennonite journal Christian Living. The first three installments, covering the family background in Holland, Germany, and Pennsylvania, are a historical fiction in which she added much imaginative detail to the few facts at her disposal. Starting with Cornelius and Nancy in the fourth installment, her account looks like a detailed and accurate record, based no doubt on documents preserved by the family in Canada. There seems little doubt that Edith Foster herself was of that family. [Ed Upton]
