Notes for NATHAN BLOCH:

Allentown Morning Call May 30, 1903

Nathan Bloch a Suicide Found Hanging from a tree in his

yard yesterday morning.

In conformity with his oft repeatedthreat to take his life, Nathan Bloch, an old and well known resident of Allentown, hung himselffrom the limb of a cherry tree in the yard of his home, No. 631 North Lumber st. Friday morning and was cold in death before the body was cut down. About four o'clock that morning the old man, who had been sick for several days, arose and went to the back yard. His wife, uneasy con-cerning his absence, followed him to the yard lessthan half an hour later and discovered his bodydangling from a rope beneath the tree.

Bloch had evidently made careful prep-arations for the rash deed, as he kept several coils of rope in an outhouse. Pointing to the cherry tree, he had frequently remarked to his neighbors, "That tree is for me". These and similar expressionswere not considered seriously by his friends, who endeavored to distract his attention from the subject. The suicide was, however, resolute in his purpose and when, failing to secure an increase in wageson Tuesday, he quit work. bloch becam moroseand melancholy.

He and his wife lived alone and they thendecided to make their home with their daughter, Mrs.L Edwin Newhardt, of No. 826 N. Ninth St. The agedcouple had already commenced to move their goods.Bloch did not apparently wish to break up his home andthought the time ??? for carrying out his threat.

When he went into the yard friday, (unreadable)about a yard in length. After making the requisite loop, it did not seem to suit his purpose and placing it in his pocket, he tried another about the same length. The second loop was made so that it could not slip.

When she discovered the body, his wife, without notifying the neighbors, ran to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Newhard on North Ninth St. Mrs. Newhard sent word to other relatives and coroner (unreadable) was summoned. It wasnot until the Coroner arrived shortly after six o'clock thatthe body was taken down.

The remains were taken by Undertaker Sterner to Mrs. Newhard's residence, from which place the funeral was held.

Nathan Bloch was born in Berks County near Kutz-town on Aug. 10, 1831 and was a son of the late Henry and Maria Bloch. He had been a resident of Allentown for nearlyfifty years. His wife's maiden name was Rebecca Schwanders.during his residence in Allentown he was employed in variouscapacities, for some years having worked in setting curbstones. His last employment was in the stone quarries of Francis Newhard, north of the city limits.

Notes for LEWIS BLOCH:

Lewis was a veteran of the Civil War who fought at Gettysburg and the famous 7-day battle of the Wilderness. The following excerpt is from his obituary in the "Kutztown Patriot" :

"Mr. Bloch was wounded....... The bullet entered at the right side back of the kidneys, passing diagonally through the abdomen and emerging below and in front of the left kidney. In its course it perforated the peritoneum and bowels, inflicting a serious and ofttimes fatal wound. On hands and feet he crawled behind a pile of rails. In this wounded, hungy, and thirsty condition he lay on his back four days in the parching sun. A Rebel private took mercy on him in his sufferings, serving him with seven canteens of water. This he drank inside of two hours or as fast as his Confederate friend could bring it. Later his new friend proposed to exchange canteens. This favor, Mr. Bloch stoutly refused, because he still had ill feelings toward the people from the south." Lewis was found and taken to the Catholic church at Gettysburg on July 4. His wounds were tended and he recuperated from his ordeal.

Notes for VIRGINIA BEATRICE KUHNS:

Virginia worked at Wenz Memorials in Allentown during the time that she lived in Fullerton. After her daughter was born, she continued to work while her aunt Ida watched the baby. After her husband became involved in investing in apartment buildings, Virginia worked part-time keeping the books for the business. She was also very active in attending American Legion events with her husband.

Notes for ERNEST GEORGE SNYDER: Ernest joined the U.S. Army during WWI while still a minor (He lied about his age). He served with the 308th Aero Squadron of the American Expeditiary Forces. He was a bugler while in the service. He could also play the mandolin and banjo mandolin. After the war, he returned home and worked for the State Highway Department in Allentown. After his marriage to Virginia, they bought a house in Fullerton, Whitehall Twp. Ernest and his family were relocated to Sellersville when the Pennsylvania Turnpike was being built. After the completion of the turnpike, the family moved to Allentown, Pa. They at first rented a lovely brick house on 20th st. for the sum of $30.00 a month. They later purchased the home from the owner and lived there for the rest of their lives. Ernest also worked for Snyder Amusements for many years. He also invested in aparment buildings with his father and brother. Ernest's father was the manager of the apartments for several years, but when he was no longer able, Ernest took over. Ernest also worked as the manager of the Betz Restaurant after his brother, Rollin, purchased it. ERnest was an active member of the Herbert Paul Lentz American Legion on S. 7th st. in Allentown. He became a commander there and also became a state officer in this organization. He and his wife frequently traveled to state and national conventions.
