Scratch the surface of a successful small company and you will probably find an owner eager to regale you with stories about the number of people who said he was crazy to go out on his own in the first place. You need a certain kind of self-confidence to start your own business, and a certain kind of stubborn determination to run it in the face of challenges and changes. Yet few companies can survive and prosper solely on the basis of the founder's or owner's intuitions. At some point the need for outside advice becomes apparent. The quality of that advice, and the willingness of the leader to be led, often dtermines the ultimate fate of a company.

Enter the board of directors. It is commonly accepted that a principal liability of small companies is lack of management depth--a chief executive officer wearing too many hats to wear any of them well. For the harassed leader, directors can be providers of wisdom, a sounding board for ideas, and a steadying influence removed from the turmoil of day-to-day pressures. Yet according to one expert, "95% of all entrepreneurs resist the idea of a board."

Chester Kirk, founder and CEO of Amtrol Inc., is one entrepreneur who didn't resist. The story of his company's success (see page 73) shows just how valuable a good board can be. By assembling and listening to four outsiders with expertise he lacked, Kirk has led Amtrol to record profits in a field crowded with competitors and battered by the recession. "From the very start," he says, "my idea hasn't been to build a reputation but to make some money."

Most small company CEOs would agree with his objective. But the skills required to run a business successfully are usually quite different from those required to start it, and putting theory into practice can be difficult. Building a business is a lonely and demanding job. For most of us, a criticism of our company or our plans is a direct challenge to our ego. The thought of a board reminds us of all those naysayers who told us we couldn't do this or that in the first place. Beyond that. planning ahead is something most of us keep promising to get around to, "when I have the time." The presence of a good outside board ensures that our assumptions will be challenged and that plans will be demanded.

Chester Kirk's experiences suggest that meeting those challenges is worth the time and effort they demand. Opening yourself to outside criticism and comment is a risk, but a small one compared to the risk of proceeding blindly with "business as usual." Of course, merely assembling a board composed of your golf partner, your lawyer, and Uncle Harry won't take you too far. Finding people whose strengths match your weaknesses and who will take an active interest in your business, and then listening to them, is critical. Your ego may be bruised occasionally, but, in business, the ultimate ego trip is the success of your company.
