We are building a brackish water desalination plant!

It has broad public support It is built on the California coast It also treats intruded, underground

seawater It solves environmental and

regulatory problems It was formulated in 2008 and is

scheduled to go on line in 2015

It was challenging. Are there any takeaway lessons?

yes

Page 11: Desal in Monterey

Break with tradition and avoid the comfort of Bureaucracy

Page 12: Desal in Monterey

Sometimes it goes fast and sometimes it don’t

Page 15: Desal in Monterey

Hope for an orderly process15

Page 16: Desal in Monterey

But be ready for a little chaos once in awhile

16

Page 17: Desal in Monterey

But there is a path forward... If you keep moving

Work to bring diverse groups together

Page 19: Desal in Monterey

Have your project treated like royalty 19

Page 20: Desal in Monterey

By not trying to solve all your problems on your own

Page 21: Desal in Monterey

But by working together

Page 22: Desal in Monterey

Hold public meetings

Find your seats, please!

Page 23: Desal in Monterey

Work together

Turns out working together is like a picnic in the park

Monterey Desalination Water ProjectUse brackish groundwater from a seawater barrier

protecting the Salinas Basin, to create potable water for the peninsula

Use vertical and slant wells avoiding open ocean intakes

Discharge brines within Ocean Plan regulations because brackish sources are less salty than straight seawater

Solve the regulatory and hydraulic problems in the Carmel River, Seaside Groundwater Basin, and Salinas Groundwater Basin

Use off-grid power from bio-digested waste from the landfill

Project Provides Significant Regional Benefits

Restoration of flows to the Carmel River – Steelhead Fish

Increased reliability Future ability to

address North Monterey County water needs

Reduced wastewater discharge to Marine Sanctuary

Reduced carbon footprint thru green landfill power

Immediate construction to aid economic stimulus
