Study Newsletter September, 2017 Project Description The intersection of Dern and W Springcreek Road on U.S. Highway 2 has been identified by MDT as a safety concern. The intersection is located west of Kalispell near reference post 118. Traffic control at the intersection currently consists of stop signs on both Dern and W Springcreek Roads. Past evaluation of the intersection recommended that improvements be made to address identified safety concerns. Safety concerns are noted due to the complicated geometric nature of the existing intersection. The intersection is located on a combination horizontal and crest vertical curve. This combination of geometric features creates limited sight distance for eastbound traffic approaching the intersection. The south leg of the intersection is also located on a hill which limits sight distance. Traffic and safety analyses and conceptual designs have recently been completed that examined potential improvements for U.S. Highway 2 at the Dern and W Springcreek Roads intersection. Preliminary intersection configurations were developed based on the findings of the existing and projected conditions analyses. Each potential improvement option was evaluated to assess how the option addressed issues and concerns related to safety, operations, and construction feasibility. Ultimately, a single-lane roundabout configuration was identified to best improve safety and operations. This configuration was found to address the major concerns identified in the safety analysis and would function at acceptable levels through the planning horizon. The key features and safety benefits of the roundabout design will be discussed at the open house. Single-lane Roundabout This design includes construction of a single-lane roundabout to replace the existing intersection. This configuration would address safety issues identified at this intersection and would significantly enhance traffic operations. The roundabout would accommodate large trucks.

Construction Impacts:• Requires significant changes to the vertical profile.• Additional right-of-way needed.

Improvements/Benefits:• Addresses existing safety issues and crash trends.• No added delay during off-peak hours.• Improved minor approach landings.• Reduction in conflict points.
