Dermatoglyphic characteristics of a population from the Central Rhodopes (South Bulgaria)

Summary: The finger and palmar prints of a total of 386 individuals ( 1 82 males and 204 females) at an age hetween 10 and 1 8 years from the region of the villages Petkovo and Banite, situated along the river Malka Arda in the Central Rhodopes, were studied. The following dermatoglyphic traits were analyzed: pattern intensity index (Pl I ) , the main line or Cummin's index (MLI ) , the frequencies of the proximal palmar triradius (t), the true hypothenar patterns (Hy) and the accessory interdigital triradii (AlT) . The specific dermatoglyphic complexes after Heet were also determined for the population under study. A peculiarity of this population is the appearance of a clearly expressed Eastern Complex (EC), wh ich accounts for 53. 1 % in the males and for 48.8 % in the females. These values of EC and the calculated dermatoglyphic distances (DD) after Heet show a similarity between the examined population and a number of populations from the Volga region, Northern Caucasus, Middle Asia and Siberia . This similarity could be explained with the preservation of the genetic heritage of the proto-Bulgarians, one of the three main components of the modern Bulgarians.

Zusammenfassung: In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden die Finger- und Hand­abdrücke von 386 Individuen ( 1 82 Männer, 204 Frauen) im Alter zwisschen \0 und 18 Jah­ren analysiert, die aus der Region um die Dörfe r Petkovo und Bani le stammen . Diese Dör­fer liegen am Fluß Malka Arda in den Zentral-Rhodopen. Die folgenden dermato­glyphischen Merkmale wurden erfaßt: Index der Musterintensität ( Pl I ) , Hauptlinien- oder Cummin's Index (MLI) , Häufigkeiten der proximalen Palmartriradien ( t ) , Häufigkeiten der wahren Hypothenarmuster ( Hy ) sowie der zusätzlichen Interdigitaltriradien (AlT) . Nach der Methode von Heet wurden weiterhin die spezifischen dermatoglyphischen Komplexe für die untersuchte Bevölkerung bestimmt. Eine Besonderheit für diese Bevölkerung ist das Vorhandensein eines klar ausgeprägten "Eastern Complex" (EC) , der sich bei 53. 1 % der untersuchten Männer und bei 48.8 % der untersuchten Frauen fand. Diese Häufigkeiten so­wie die nach Heet ermittelten dermatoglyphischen Distanzen (DD) lassen eine Ähnlichkeit zwischen der untersuchten Bevölkerung und einer Reihe von Bevölkerungen aus der Wol­ga-Region, dem nördlichen Kaukasus, Mittel-Asien und Sibirien erkennen. Das kann mit dem Bewahren des genetischen Erbes der Proto-Bulgaren erklärt werden, die eine der drei Hauptkomponenten der gegenwärtigen Bevölkerung Bulgariens darstel len.
