BACKGROUND

• DERiC is a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the aim of building resilient communities. One of the ways that happens is through CPCE and set up CIC’s and supports them through the process.

• DERiC has been developing programmes since 2010.

• Has raised funding from Big Society Capital of over £1m to invest in CPCE programmes.

• Part of the support is a loan of up to £150 k per CIC to be paid back over 6year period to reinvest into other programmes.

• Current 9 programmes in Leeds, Belfast, Sandwell, Bristol, Havering and 2 programmes in Medway

To address loneliness, improve employability for local residents, building on and using people’s existing skills.

• WALT and wHoo cares ADDS to the care services a person receives .

• Additional input as identified by a professional employed by WALT/wHoo cares using a life planning approach.

• Provided by volunteers/community supporters (social capital).

• Matched by a volunteer coordinator employed by WALT/wHoo cares.

• Could impact on assessed care – joint review important to discuss impact and agree any changes to care.

• Due diligence remains essential role of Social Care professional/ CIC does not replace duty of care .

• Joint working and clear communication on outcomes is fundamental

Advantages of WALT and wHoo cares• Improves lives of people who use services.

• Communities support vulnerable people, develop neighbourliness .

• Reduce Social Isolation , build relationships in communities.

• Deliver and enhanced quality of support.

• Increased opportunity for volunteering, employment and training close to home.

• A reduction in reliance on statuary services, both those commissioned by Local authorities and the NHS.

• Over time reducing the cost of providing social Support which enables some savings to be reinvested by communities themselves.
