I want to thank Kurt Fischer and David Bunch on my behalf for their work on the newsletter as well as other members during my sabbatical. They did a splendid job. I received many e-mails from some of you expressing concern as to my absence; I just needed a break. Sometimes your body tells you way before your brain does. Thank you to all of those who expressed concern and for your support especially those who told me to take my time, it truly made the time pass more gently. I hope to see you all soon.

Enough said, let's move on and see what's inside! Ed.

The Redwood Region Porsche Club is about our great cars, great people and our outstanding events. It takes many people behind the scenes to assure that the club functions well and that we all have lots of fun. Since our Annual Meeting will be held in conjunction with our 40th Anniversary Party in July, we need to get an early start on identifying those of you who are interested in volunteering to help run the club. A nominating committee chaired by Past President David Bunch has been formed; Bret Boutet and Mac Cranford will work with Dave on this important task. The positions to be filled for 2010 are: President - elected office Vice President - elected office Treasurer - elected office Secretary - elected office Membership Director - appointed Social Director - appointed Autocross Director - appointed Safety Director - appointed Concours Chair - appointed Advertising Director - appointed Newsletter Editor - appointed Webmaster - appointed

Goodie Store Director - appointed Northern Representative(s) - appointed

The four officers will be elected by the general membership in an October ballot. The 2010 elected officers will appoint the other board positions. If you are interested in serving in any of these capacities, please reply with your interests(s) to David Bunch (707-766-8839 or [email protected]) , Bret Boutet (707-836-9104 or [email protected]) or Mac Cranford (415-472-8711 or [email protected]). If you already hold a board position and would like to continue in that or another position, we need your response too.

Serving on the board is a lot of fun and another way to get involved with your club. Experience is not required as there are always people to help you get started.

As you may know by know, I am a 'early' Sebring freak. Some of you may know who this is and the significance of the photograph, but if not, I will tell you. It was shot on 26 March 1960 and marked Porsche's first outright win on American soil in an RS60 Spyder. Hans Herrmann and Oliver Gendebien piloted this car to a 9 lap victory over the second place RS60 of Bob Holbert beating 7(!) Ferrari's out of the top ten. The press called it a "classic case of a steady endurance pace and waiting for the leaders to break". In '58 and '59, the best RS and RSK's could do was third place.

I was only 7 at the time and did not attend, but I can tell you that this car is headed straight for the hairpin around noon. Note the shadow. I think that is also the same cone my dad stole for my souvenier. This was an extremely historic moment for Porsche as you know, they never looked backed, and for those in the know, who was the first to win Porsche's first Le Mans victory? None other than good 'ole Hans in the 917K.

Redwood Region's new pylons!

Woke up early this sunny but cool morning with Sharon and Molly, the AX dog and I headed up to the

Santa Rosa Airport for Redwood Region Autocross #2. As we come over the hill we can see a bunch of vehicles already on the autocross area? After going through the gate, we find five Hot Air balloons lying on the ground with their support vehicles along with all of their passengers standing around waiting to take off. We are told they will be inflating soon and they should be able to lift-off shortly.

Some of the autocrossers start to show up around 7:30 and the balloons are rising above the airport. Thanks to early arrivals, the registration and tents are set up, and the course starts to get laid out. Our ZONE 7 Rep and Autocross Co-Chair Sharon Neidel designed today's course and it is an open and fast course.

Page 16: der Riesenbaum - PCA 2009 edR.pdfder Riesenbaum Redwood Region Newsletter Porsche Club of America Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa and Sonoma May 2009 Issue V, …

One again a large group of SCCA, AAS and ESCA drivers come to try their luck at the airport. Both SCCA & AAS have lost their site at Alameda Point so these autocrossers needed to drive! We have 68 drivers signed up and ready to drive. Even with the large turn out everyone gets seven runs on the course.

For the second autocross in a row, Justin Moore in his 2005 Subaru WRX STI takes TOP TIME OF DAY honors with a 43.738. Justin must enjoy our autocrosses since he drives all the way from east side of San Jose, a couple hour drive for him to get here. Mike McCrory in his Honda Civic took second just over .3 behind Justin. Sharon really liked her course finishing 3rd overall only .124 second behind Mike. The top eight finishers were all within 1.151 seconds of each other.

Make sure you check out the great photos that Barbara McCrory has posted on the website.

Here is some in-car video of Trekkor Wills during one of his runs.

Once again thank you to all of those that arrive early and help setup, Becky Cranford & LaVergne Thomas for handling registration, Kurt for being the "gatekeeper" and Jim Winston & Bill Newton for doing tech on the cars. Thanks to all of those who helped with tear down and cleanup afterwards!

Redwood Region's Track Junkies!

David Bunch with pics by David Wong

The last weekend of March found a large group from the Redwood Region making their way to Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, Ca. for the first Driver's Education/Time Trial and Club Race of 2009. PCA Club Racing was returning to Northern California for the first time in 5 years. In the Club Race group were Larry Robison and John Trefethen. The DE & Time Trialers were Mac & Becky Cranford, Greg Chambers, and Gary Fellers, Richard Roth, Scott Reynolds, Sebastian Lane, Dean Lyons and yours truly.

The weather was near perfect on all three days, except for the high wind on Sunday, which gave you a nice push when going with the wind, but did make things interesting when hitting the cross wind.

Friday was Race practice for the 33 racers in three sessions. On Saturday and Sunday, the 41 Racers included had a morning warm up session, a qualifying session and their race. The race group was made up of a variety of Porsche racecars, the Spec 911 group had a large contingent and the growing Spec Boxster group had 6 in their group. In the 15 lap Club Race on Saturday, John finished 2nd just 6 seconds behind the winner and was first in his class. Larry finished 7th overall and won his class.

Page 19: der Riesenbaum - PCA 2009 edR.pdfder Riesenbaum Redwood Region Newsletter Porsche Club of America Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa and Sonoma May 2009 Issue V, …

Sunday's race saw the top qualifier, Chris Paulis start at the very back of the entire race group, and he managed to work his way all the way to third at the end of the race. John made a pass on the next to last lap to take 1st overall and Larry came in 6th and again won his class.

The 55 DE drivers were given five track sessions on Friday, which was good for the first time out on the track in a few months, and everyone was able to get the cobwebs out and work on building up their speed on the track. Saturday and Sunday the 75 DE drivers got lots of track time both days.

After the Sunday Club Race is for the Timed Trials, when 5 Porsches are sent out on the track at a time and you get two timed laps to try to run your best time. Unfortunately the flu bug hit both of the Cranford's, which sent them home early Sunday, thus they missed the Time Trials. Greg had some gremlins in his brakes, so he called it early. Dean finished 3rd in his class TT10 and yours truly took first in class TT04.

If you have ever wondered about driving your Porsche on the track, you need to check out the GGR Drivers education program. If you have any questions, please contact me.

The next track weekend will be three days on Buttonwillow Raceway at the end of May.

Ever been on a beer tour with the Redwood Region Porsche Club? No? Well you are not alone. None of us

has, but leave it to the Neidel's to come up with a fresh new venue for us to partake and leave the rest shaking their heads saying, "Why didn't we think of that...?" On Saturday, March 28th, that is exactly what we did. My count was at 32 who attended on, do I dare say, another priceless sun-shiny, cloudless day up at Moylan's in Novato just across the exit where we always meet for events. Beer in the morning? Moylan's opened their doors for us at 10:30 in tempo with some Rolling Stones' tunes as we sauntered up to a long bar that accommodated all but a few of us. Mary Neidel had made little forms ready for us to fill out for choosing your favorite tastings to place in front of you on the bar and soon the cute servers were filling those same orders. The tastings were placed in front of you according to your list, in small cylindrical glasses, kind of piston sized, in neat rows. Imagine six little clear glasses, filled with six different beers. Tipperary Pale Ale, Dragoon's Irish Dry Stout, Old Blarney Barley wine...You know me, I was writing down notes to describe what could not be photographed and I came up with amber, golden, Irish red, Guinness black, auburn, burnt sienna...just a stunning necklace of vibrant hues. In addition, we had some sunlight rays gleaming in to show them off as well. Very cool sight of some 30 rows of brews.

I am not one to write about this appropriately, but what can I say, the tastings were all over the map.

Bitter, sweet, bold, yeasty, mild and yes, hoppy. Something for everybody! As I looked around taking notes, all there were having fun, engaged in conversations and delighting in frequent tours of the brewing process guided by Jim Grbac with Julie Bickel pouring. The classes of tours took a bit of time and we were getting antsy for lunch, pretzels not withstanding! So we got out of there about 12:30, started up the steeds and followed Rob and Mary on a fabulous drive through the best country in the universe. Have you ever seen such glory? Even as a man, the spender of God's gifts entranced me. California poppies, mustard, mounds of wildflowers in white and crimson, buttercups, cherry and apple blossoms, goats, cows, horses, hawks, red winged blackbirds, aroma of cow dung, fresh alfalfa, emerald green, blue sky and a kaleidoscope of Porsches gleaming in the sun. I like to say it with the five senses; visual, smell, sound, ahh, some touch I suppose, and a little taste! There you go!

So we arrive in cute little Sebastopol at the Hopmonk's Tavern and find Bill Dekarly guiding us to parking spots. We gather in the rear area on picnic tables with our friends and are treated to large pilsners. Rob and Mary had been raving about the food, and with good reason. Chef Billy Reid prepared a wonderful menu. Pan seared chicken, salmon & mushroom, and ale marinated pork loin & apple-onion chutney. I think the salmon was a favorite here, but the pork was extremely popular, as well. Of course, Kurt, always the president, made the rounds making sure we were all happy and content. Watch your plate with that person! In addition to planning a spectacular and very "brisk" drive, Rob and Mary worked with both breweries

and secured great door prizes! Moylan's provided T-shirts and Hopmonk's (always fastidious about proper glassware) provided a variety of ale and pilsner glasses. Steve Vest walked away with the grand prize, a set of six Belgian style glasses. The fun was hearty and laden with laughs, at least at our table. It was a great venue, one that Lynn and I are still talking about. Hats off to Rob and Mary, the owners, cooks and servers for a job very well done. Let us do this again!

Lunch Run to Stormy's - April 18, 2009

Kurt Fischer with John Jackson's pics

The lineup on a very rural road in West Marin

April 18th found us at our newest venue, the historic 1854 Stormy's in quaint one block

town of Bloomfield. Never heard of Bloomfield... David Bunch discovered Stormy's last year and checked it out as a new eatery tied in with a fast blast on back roads that few of us have ever driven! The weather again cooperated with this run. Sunny and crisp in the morning turning into a day with temperatures in the mid 70's. In typical David Bunch fashion, we started in Petaluma within 20 minutes of downtown Bloomfield...if we took the direct route, but not with the Redwood Region. We were in for a brisk 46 mile 1.5 hour run on the back roads! We head out northeast on Old Redwood Highway cross under the freeway to Stony Point Road and begin a 48-turn romp through the gorgeous less traveled roads of Sonoma and Marin Counties. We flew past every type of farm, ranch and private vineyards with all the associated smells and sights. Sheep and cattle hanging on every fence for the proverbial grass is greener on the other side and since at this time of the year there is was no fog, the scenery glistened under the sun. In the rainy season all the hillsides are verdant in greenery.

Even our native homegrown people remarked on the choice of roads...we are talking roads seldom traveled unless you live on these rural roads! We pull into the spacious parking lot at Stormy's and it is awash in all the colors of the rainbow via our Porsches! As we enter Stormy's, the fire is crackling in their huge fireplace and the bartender is ready for orders. I highly recommend their Bloody Marys...festooned with an entire selection of veggies! The tables are set and we all choose our spots and then out on the deck for the "photo op" by our photographer, John Jackson. Back inside, we are ready for the food orders to be taken and the competent staff of Stormy's jumps in action. With 40 of us there, the talk was loud and the tables buzzed with action! Many thanks to David Bunch and Sharon Neidel for setting up this great run and eatery for the Redwood Region...another excellent day...we sure have the Porsche roads! We will do this run again!

Our happy group on and off the deck at Stormy's
