Not many magazines manage to publishcontinuously for thirty two years.
Der Auspuffâs relative success andlongevity is due to many Rennsport mem-bers who have volunteered their time andtheir creative skills to assist in the publica-tion of nearly four hundred issue.
While the labour is the result of goodwill, the financial costs of printing and post-ing the magazine remain significant. Alongwith financial assistance from the PorscheClub of America, which returns part of yourPCA dues to the region, we depend heavilyon the revenues generated through adver-tisements.
For those who have been reading ourpages for any length of time, you will havenoticed that we have recently experienced ahealthy increase in number of Auspuffadvertisers. Garth Gullekson is the mandirectly responsible for this and his experi-ence in marketing, his methodical organiza-tional skills and his low key, friendlyapproach, have obviously made a positivecontribution.
Our latest advertiser is Unicorn Motorslocated in St-Laurent, Québec. Unicorn isowned by RSR member Alex Habrich, amember of our driver training instructorteam. Alex has teamed up with BarryGingrich, a technician and race car fabricatorwith considerable experience. The result isthat Montréal area is blessed with anotherexcellent shop for serious Porsche assistance.
We respectfully remind all of our mem-bers to support our advertisors by givingthem the opportunity to serve you. Successof local business ventures contributes to eco-nomic growth and stability within our com-munities.

On The Line Rob & Barbara Martin
It is very appropriate that we âclosedâ ourseason on Thanksgiving weekend. It hasbeen a great season and we have much tobe thankful for. We had another greatTrack season and after paying most of theinvoices there is still money left in thetrack account. As we did last year we willrebate this money to the Rennsport mem-bers who attended these events.
The AGM was the last major activityof the season. I would like to congratulateall the award winners and add my person-al thank you to all the AGM organizers foran enjoyable evening. James Bond wouldbe proud. Thankfully the Dance Policewere very lenient and few tickets werehanded out for bad dancing. One thingthat we managed to do at the AGM was togive Michel Galarneau the actual awardthat he won last year.
I guess that the AGM didnât close ourseason, it actually closed our summer sea-son and now we move on to the winteractivities.
One of the big events is Karting. RogerLaroche told me that the Montreal Kartingseries will get started around midNovember. Paul Brassard mentioned thatthe Ottawa series will also soon be up andrunning. Philippe Desjardins is workingon winter season tech sessions. Pleasecheck the web-site regularly to stay up todate with these changes.
While we are speaking of PaulBrassard, I would like to thank him for theeffort he has put in over the last two yearsas the clubâs Social Director. Merci Paul. Iwould also like to thank the other mem-bers of the exec who have graciouslydecided to stay for one more year on theboard. Stepping up to the plate to replace Paul
Brassard is Philippe Girard. Philippe hasbeen working on the social events inMontreal. He has a lot of really great ideaswhich we will get working on soon. Overthe next few months we will be setting the2004 calendar, so if you have any sugges-tions for events, now would be the time tocontact Philippe or any of the board mem-bers.
Many of the clubâs regular activities willneed revamping so that they may better fitthe needs of the membership. This also isbeing worked on. We will also be usingthe Help Wanted advertisements inAuspuff and the web site to ask for helprunning some of the activities. We arealready looking for some one to take careof sales for the Goodie Store. Paul Racinewill still take care of purchasing the inven-tory, but we need someone to run thestore.
At many of the events members havecommented on how lucky we are with theweather. We have had very little rain atour major events. I guess that I can revealour secret. Rennsport has a special anti-rain budget. This budget is invested topermit me to light candles at St-JosephâsOratory prior to each event. Occasionallycandles are also lit at St-Anne de Beaupre.

going by at full song is music to my ears.Itâs a matter of perspective I guess. The anti-noise crowd around the track isvociferous and persistent. Perhaps soundfrom loud cars make whitecaps in theircappuccino? That they chose to buy orbuild homes in hearing range of a race-track doesnât seem to matter, they demandthat the noise be eliminated.
They seem to be making some headway. The local municipality has passed a veryaggressive anti noise by-law. I havenâtseen the full text yet but apparently fromnow on the limit is 60 dB on the A scaleaveraged over an hour. In the case of LeCircuit, the level would be measured onthe back deck of one of those homes spec-ulators built about 250 feet from the track. This made me wonder what the heck 60dBmeant.
Hereâs a chart I found on a web site devot-ed to sound levels. Itâs in dB-A. I also dis-covered that 60 dB âAâ corresponds tonormal conversation.
âą 50 refrigerator âą 50 - 60 electric toothbrush âą 50 - 75 washing machine âą 50 - 75 air conditioner âą 55 coffee percolator âą 55 - 70 dishwasher âą 60 sewing machine âą 60 - 95 hair dryer âą 65 - 80 alarm clock âą 70 TV audio âą 70 - 80 coffee grinder âą 70 - 95 garbage disposal âą 75 - 85 flush toilet âą 80 pop-up toaster âą 80 doorbell
Correction:
Last month I wrote that the Pagid Yellowpads for the PCCB and steel rotors of theGT2/3 were the same. I was misinformed. The compounds are different. If you arelucky enough to have a car using the hugebrakes be careful to get the right ones!
Aquapel!
Louise was at Lebeau getting a stone chipin her windshield repaired and the techni-cian suggested she get the glass treatedwith a Aquapel. It costs 20 bucks and issupposed to last for six months. She ravedabout it and went right back to get herGT3 done.
This week she volunteered to take myAudi over for the treatment.
She was not kidding about the stuff. Youcan drive the car in the rain withoutwipers as long as youâre going fast enoughfor the air blast to move the water away. Icanât speak for the long-term durability ofthe stuff, but the treatment works asadvertised. With the crappy weatherweâve had lately Iâve had plenty ofchances to enjoy the benefits. I recommendthis for both your track and street cars. Ifyou ride a motorcycle this stuff would bea godsend on your visor.
Itâs all about noise:
Noise is kind of subjective. If a car pullsup next to me with [c]rap music (how cananyone call that stuff music?) making mycar rattle with a megawatt subwoofer, Icall it noise. On the other hand a GT3 RSR
8 November - novembre 2003
RSRRendezvous Bob Rouleau
âą 80 ringing telephone âą 80 - 90 blender âą 80 - 95 garbage disposal âą 110 baby crying âą 110 squeaky toy held close to the ear âą 135 noisy squeeze toys âą 140 airplane taking off âą 150 jet engine taking off âą 150 artillery fire at 500 feet âą 180 rocket launching from pad
So, the maximum sound level permitted inTremblant is less than a hair dryer! Betternot make a lot of Margaritasbecause your blender is way tooloud. Donât cut your lawn andyouâd better rake the leaves byhand.
Based on the above, the by-law seems oppressive. Whileresearching sound levels Ialso came across an explana-tion of the âAâ scale. Iâve beencurious and thereâs an automo-tive connection. Road tests measureinterior noise levels in dB-A. What does theâAâ mean?
It turns out that our ears have non-linearresponse. At low sound levels, we donâthear low and high frequencies very well.At mid levels we do better and for reallyloud sounds we hear all frequencies, withinthe range of our hearing, equally well.
Sound measuring devices donât have thelimitations of human hearing. They detectsounds (over their range) equally well irre-spective of frequency. In order to makemeasurements meaningful, filters areapplied.
Der Auspuff 9
The âAâ filter tries to represent the humanearâs response to sounds at relatively lowlevels. It reduces the sensitivity of themeasuring device at low and high fre-quencies. The âloudness controlâ on yourhome stereo does the same thing only inreverse, it boosts the level of lows andhighs to compensate for the fact that whenwe play music at low levels we hear bestin the mid range. Good ones reduce thedegree of boost as the volume is raised.
For example, a sound which would beloud enough to hear but has a low fre-
quency would be almost inaudible tous. The A filter takes this into con-sideration and gives us a measure-ment which (forgive the pun)sounds right to our ears. It ignoresor filters out low and high frequen-cies. This might explain why Marc
Belangerâs 934 doesnât pin thesound meter. It makes a lot of low
frequency sound which is largely fil-tered out of the measurement.
All is not perfect in the world of soundmeasurements though. Just when Ithought I understood them, I found a veryscientific web site claiming that A-scalemeasurements are grossly imprecise anduseless for purposes of litigation. It seemsthat the âaverageâ ear isnât so average.Maybe a generation of people usingWalkmans, Boom Boxes and 1200 wattsubwoofers has changed things?
How does this relate to Le Circuit?Darned if I know! According to MichaelNey of Le Circuit, by-law or not, it will bebusiness as usual. If the municipality
imposes a fine, Le Circuit will defend theirposition vigorously. They cannot react tothe new law until they are charged withviolating it. I am betting on the track. Theywere there long before the homes werebuilt.
Technical Inspections for DE 2004:
At the September board meeting the exec-utive voted to change the rules for manda-tory car inspection within two weeks ofattending a DE event.
Presently we have a list if approved techni-cians/garages who are authorized to inspectPorsches. As the Club has grown, weâveadded a few more trying to make it conven-ient for members who live out of the city.
Our view is that cars must be inspected anditâs in everyoneâs interest that it be doneright. To this end, we are changing the rulessuch that you can get your car inspectedwherever you want. The responsibility forhaving a safe and reliable car lies with thedriver and nobody else. Itâs no fun having toflat-bed home with a busted car, so be pru-dent when you chose an inspector.
You can download the form on our web siteand give it to your chosen mechanic.Rennsport will continue to recommend cer-tain garages known for their competence. The big change is that next year you wonâtbe required to use them exclusively.
The Best Street Tires!
Last week I was at Tremblant. The weatherwas dodgy so I put on the GT3 OEM streettires. Iâd never used them before butFrancois Desjardins at Autostrasse spokehighly of them, He was right. Naturally, since I was on streets, the weather stayeddry. I figured I was in for a pushy, squealingride. To my surprise, I got nothing more thana moan with excellent traction and crisp turnin. The tires in question are Michelin PilotSport N2. The N2 is a Porsche designationand may be unique to the GT3. These are thespec tire for the GT3 and use a dual rubbercompound.
Whatever magic they infused, these thingswork really well. On the way home it rained

As in previous AGMs, forme the more importantstory was not the eventitself but what it demon-strates. The AGM highlightsthe tremendousvolunteerism of our clubmembers and the great sup-port we get from oursponsors. The AGM team, this year organized by PaulBrassard and Chris Paine, puts in hundreds of person-hours of effort and tremen-dous creativity to ensurethat our annual get togetheris enjoyable.
The graciousness of ourannual award recipients, such as Michel Galarneauwho received a belatedtrophy this year for the longterm service citation givento him at last year's AGM,demonstrates the spirit ofall those who put so muchinto the club. And lookingat the list of awards andAGM sponsors, it is encour-aging to see the many com-panies who support us notjust at the AGM but also at
many club events throughout the years. We appreciate their support, and encour-age our members to use their productsand services.

Special mentionmust go to Marc andKris Belanger for brave-ly showing up in cos-tumes inspired by theHalle Berryâs swimsuitscene from the Bondmovie âDie AnotherDayâ.

Lâorchestre Eddie and the Stingrays, gra-cieusetĂ© des commanditaires Dataradio etGigatron, assura une musique enivrante etdynamique.

Greetings and welcome to another month-ly installment of the hit reality show-âSurvivor Hawkesbury - The ExecutiveMeetingsâ.
In this monthâs installment we will seehow the directors of the Rennsport Porscheclub make their way through the trials andtribulations ofwrapping up asuccessful trackseason, workingthrough animmunity chal-lenge involvingincreased spon-sorships, andthe major chal-lenge of theplanning andexecution of theAGM! Sit backand relax, andhear what hap-pened lastmonth anddonât worry, noone got voted off;instead, someonewill have been voted in by the time youread this!
The September meeting started with BobRouleauâs report of another successfultrack season. Our crack team of DE volun-teers, particularly Michael Delaney, keptthings running smoothly no matter whatthe weather or situation.
Garth and Paul spoke about advertisingand sponsorship and the upcoming AGM.Garth was able to report that our advertis-
er renewal rate was extremely high, andwe have picked up some new sponsors. Inaddition both Garth and Paul updated uson the sponsor initiatives for the AGM.
The rest of the evening was spent dis-cussing various topics ranging from techcenters, teaching aids, track photos, right
on up to attract-ing new boardmembers andvolunteers. SinceI canât covereverything, letme wrap up let-ting you knowthat the execu-tive is looking atnew ways to kickoff the 2004 sea-son and whatkind of eventwould be neededto do so.
Traditionally theSilver Shaft hasbeen that venue, but itâs felt that
perhaps its time for a change and a get-ting back to the real reason for the kickoff(which is introducing new members to theclub). Look for something new to happenin the spring and if you have any sugges-tion, contact one of the executive to giveus your opinion. One thing that each andevery one of you can do though is tomake sure that you bring along someoneto the monthly dinners or to the kickoffevent that may gain an interest in theclub. I know people that were not reallyconsidering a Porsche purchase but after
Alexander Joseph Gutknecht, aka âAJâ and his proud parents, Jacquelinand Eric... Un nouveau Porschiste fait son apparition
Der Auspuff 31
attending a meeting and a DE or similarevent, promptly went out and began look-ing for a Porsche in order to join our club!
Well thatâs it for this month, it seems likethere is always so much more that I wouldlike to say, but I can never fit in everythingthat goes on at the board meetings. If youreally want to know it all, then perhapsyou should consider running for one of theopen board positions at the next occasionor volunteering to work with one of thedirectors on the many club activities! Itâs achallenge but also rewarding!
