President's Message Bob Russo
As those of you who: a, attend themonthly meetings; b. read DER GASSERor c. participate in our events, areaware, the Club treasury is veryhealthy this year. The source ofthis money is PGA National duesrebates, and the Drivers Educationregistration fees. At the last twoExec committee meetings, we havediscussed how to use this money tothe best advantage. The Exec feelswe should maintain a contingencycushion for protection, but havinga large balance for the sake ofhaving a large balance doesn't seemto make a great deal of sense toanyone. There are some regionsthat take great pride in the sizeof their bank accounts, but we feelwe should do something for ourmembers with the excess funds.
Since it is basicallly member'smoney, why not have it benefitthem. To this end, we have begunto put certain wheels in motion toaccomplish our goal of using thismoney to benefit you, the members.
Bob Lamb, our Drivers Ed Chairman,has arranged for a fine dinnerfollowing our event at the Glen(July 21-22). This will be FREEfor one hundred registrants andguests. It will not be just beerand wursts, either!!
For the first time in a long, longtime, the Picnic will be FREE. Ofcourse, the food will again bedonated by our own Tony Bonanni ofBonanni Food Services, and theliquid refreshments are arranged byBill O'Connell, courtesy of JimKelly of Stroh's. But there will
be no charge to the members, as thetreasury will cover all other costs!
Our annual Christmas Banquet, to beheld at the Bay Pony Inn, will beheavily subsidized by the treasuryto provide fine dining andentertainment at an extremelyreasonable cost.
These are some of the ways that theClub will be working for you therest of the year. It is a Club andnot a business, so the Exec feelsit is in existence to serve the
members and provide activities thatpeople want. Let's "Eat, drink,and be merry, for tomorrow weDRIVE"! Let's all enjoy what theClub has to offer.
On a similar note, the plea stillgoes out for help on the 1991Executive Committee. Please don't

This meeting is one of the great humbling events for all you hotshoes that thinkyou know everything about Porsches. Debbie and Bill Cooper will bring back theTech Quiz from the Parade and administer it to us. You will learn some amazingthings about your cars from this. Incidentally, a slight correction isin order. The requirements formembership eligibility stated inthe Exec Minutes published in theJune DER GASSER were not entirelycorrect. This clarification should
set the record straight.1. You must own a Porsche to jointhe Club initially.2. National allows members who sell
their cars to remain as an Associate
member for one year.3. After one year, it is up to theindividual region to determinewhether the Associate membershipcan continue. Our region allowsthis to continue as long as themember continues to pay yearly dues.

Now that we've reached 800 members
it is not time to sit back and
relax. Our contest to see who can
recruit the most new members this
year is still on, with one yearsdues to the Porsche Club as the
prize. In fact, National hasborrowed our idea and is having acontest with a goal of 1,990 newmembers. Awards (undetermined atthis time, but promised to beworthy) will be given to the regionwith the largest percentage growththis year. One award for regionsunder 200 members and another for
those over 200. (If you don't knowwhere we are, you haven't beenpaying attention.) National isproviding assistance during thisdrive by providing the following:1. Windshield flyers, which looksomewhat like parking tickets.Some regions have found these to beexcellent recruiting tools. 2. Themembership application and the "Whatis PGA?" brochure are now one
document. 3. Acrylic holders fordisplay of applications. 4. Thecontinuation of revamped ads inmajor magazines. 5. Several partssuppliers will include applicationsin their shipments (Stoddard,Garretson, Tweeks, Porsche PartsObsolete and Performance Products).
According to Drayton James, theChairman of the National MembershipCampaign, most of the other largeregions are coming down in size.It's a credit to the involvement
and enthusiasm of our members that
we continue to grow. I think thatwith the headstart from our own
contest and a little effort we
might win this thing.

The June meeting was held at thehome of Janet and Jerry Weger.Present were; Bob Russo, Paul andSybil Margaritis, Bill Miller, BetsiLeidy, Debbie and Bill Cooper, JimHartman, Bob and Charlotte Lamb,Vern Lyle, John Williamson, andBill O'Connell, who was late, again!
It was noted that Dennis Thovson,National President, reads ourminutes in DER GASSER. Hi, Dennis!We must be careful with the wordingwe use when discussing insurance.The correct wording is "allparticipants who sign the releaseform are covered".
It was decided that the Annual
Awards Committee will consist of
the entire Board. The Coopers willwrite an explanation of theRiesentoter Award, Vern to definethe Mighty-Nitto, Russo to defineTattered Helmet and Lamb will
define the Track Event Trophy.
Bob Russo will donate his file
cabinet to the Club Historian.
Treasury: we now have an interestbearing account which brings in$50-70 monthly. A discussion washeld on how to use excess funds.
Suggestions included subsidizingactivities such as the Picnic,Watkins Glen dinner, ChristmasBanquet and subsidizing the CharityAutocross. We should keep about$2500 to cover events that losemoney. We may also buy new loanerhelmets, but first we will ask fordonations from the Club.
PIR had 75 entrants, 43 of whomcame back the second day. Therewere mixed feelings about thistrack from the experienced drivers,but the beginners loved it! Withmore feedback, we will decide onrunning this track again, possiblya one-day event. We did, however,lose $500-1000, but we had clean
restrooms and air-conditioning! Anaside: the stock car racers turn
32-33 second laps at PIR, while ourown Don Cox was doing some 35's!Summit Point is filled and has a
waiting list. We will probablymake $4000. We wanted to havepatches for the event, but time ranout. We will have them for the
Glen. Professional flaggers havebeen hired for Summit, and the Glenwill also have pro flaggers. TheSeptember Mid-Ohio event will be ajoint Potomac/RTR effort. Input onhow we've run our events has been
very positive. Special thanks toDebbie Cooper for doing Control atPIR in the rain on Sunday.
Saturday, June 30, the town ofNazareth is holding a parade inhonor of their 200th anniversary.They would like Porsches toparticipate. The Andretti familywill be in attendance.
The last autocross netted almost
$275. The Charity Autocross willuse the PAX Index and there will be
only one trophy for the fastestdriver. Hats and shirts will be
donated and there may be a foodcart. St. Christopher's wants toknow the date so they can publishit. There is an August 15 dateavailable on the parking lot atJohnsville, but the lot is not bigenough, so the logistics of parkingmust be evaluated. A Sept 23 dategives us more time to advertise sothis will be investigated.
The July general meeting has beenchanged to the Tech Quiz and inAugust we will have Vince Evansfrom Holberts as guest speaker.
A new site is needed for the Picnic
since Camp Hideaway gets moreexpensive every year and can't giveus a post-Labor Day date. However,it is difficult to find a placethat allows beer. Ideas are needed.

Membership may reach 800 this month.John gave the Exec a handout ofwhat the dealership boards would belike. The committee approved buying14 boards at a cost of $400 to putinto dealerships, since we are notreaching many new buyers. Boardsmay also go to independent shops.
Two more torque wrenches werepurchased for Tech. Any commercialshop or any individual whom the Clubhas provided with a tech stamp cantech cars for driver's ed events.
Eastwick, a company that sellsrestoration tools, located on Rt 30in Malvern, wishes to hold ameeting for the Club in the fall orpossibly for the February meeting.
Russo and Hartman attended the
meeting held for the Vintage GrandPrix to be held in 1991. The
Vintage committee liked our Club'senthusiasm and we will be givensome choice in how we participate.
The New Hope Car Show is August11-12. Sybil is organizing acaravan for anyone interested.
Jim and Jan Hartman will host the
next Exec meeting on July 13.

Our next autocross will be held on
August 5 instead of the previouslyscheduled August 12. This changeis due to a conflict with the SCCA
Northeast Divisional Championshipsin Harrisburg. It will be held onthe same parking lot as the lastevent, at the Naval Air DevelopmentCenter.
As usual, registration will open at9 and the first heat will get underway around 10. Please remember, werequire you to work in the heatopposite the one you are runningin. We need your cooperation sothat everyone can have a good time.
Also remember, you don't have todrive a Porsche to run the event.If your Porsche is under theweather, or you have friends whowould like to give autocrossing atry, bring whatever you drive.There are no trophies in the "runwhat you brung" category, but it isa great way to have fun on Sundayand get some valuable experience.Much better than mowing the lawn,just ask Rex:
Charity Autocross - Sept 23
We are planning a Charity AutocrossSept 23 benefiting St. Christopher'sHospital for Children. The event isbeing sponsored by Bridgestone,which has graciously provided somegoodies to be given away at theevent. The major item up for grabsis a set of Bridgestone tires:
We invite you to come and join usat the Naval Air DevelopmentCenter. The event will be open to
everyone and will be run under SCCArules and classes, including thePAX Index. One overall trophy willbe awarded to the top indexed time.Entry fee is $15. If you so choose,you don't have to run the event;everyone who donates the $15 willbe eligible to win the tires.
Registration will open by 9 and thefirst heat will run at 10. Come
out and join us for some fun on therunway. You'll be supporting avery worthwhile cause.
This will also include our regularseries event //4. The finishingpositions in our Porsche Clubclasses will be calculated
separately and trophies awardedaccordingly.

The Naval Air Development Center islocated on Jacksonville Road at the
intersection with Street Road (Rt132) in Warminster. Take Exit 27of the PA turnpike (Willow Grove),north on Rt 611, and right ontoBlair Mill Road. Go right ontoCounty Line Road, cross York Road(Rt 263), and go left ontoJacksonville. Cross Street Roadand watch for the "PCA" signs onthe left side.

The winner at our Charity Autocrosson September 23 will be determinedby PAX Index. PAX (ProfessionalAutocrossers) developed the indexyears ago by comparing winningtimes for SCCA autocross classes at
major events, the theory being thatonly a competitive car/drivercombination could win at the
Divisional or National level. The
numbers were recalculated twice a
year and proved to be very accurateand fair. The variable is course
design, since major events tend tohave larger, faster courses. Whensome local events are run on tinylots and the Index is used, it canfavor smaller cars. But we don't
intend to have that at our event,in fact, we are going to copy aNational course when those finals
used to be run on a similar runway.
SCCA rules for car classification
generally conform to a "conceptual"system, in that similar types ofcars run together. What the rulesdon't really allow for are thedifferences in the cars within the
broad classification. However, itis a recognized system almosteverywhere you go, and if you wantto open an event to other cars, youare pretty much forced to use it.Porsches run in 6 stock classes
under these rules.
Super Stock: 911 turbos, 928 S4,944 Turbo S, class generally won bya late model Corvette - Index .866
A Stock: in their wisdom, or lackof it, they put all other 911s inhere, 914-6, Carrera 4, and 356Carrera 4 cam (nobody said it madesensel), so you all run at .847
B Stock; other 928, 944 16V, 944turbo, competition from the pre-84Vettes mostly - index .839
G Stock; 914 2.0, 944 8V, 924S.The Fiero V6, MR-2 and Miata couldgive you some trouble here - .837
D Stock: 914 1.7/1.8, 924 turbo vs.Dodge Colt turbo. Fiat Xl/9, HondaCivic, Golf 16V and Scirocco - .829
E Stock: all 356, 912, 924 againstalmost everything else in the worldof this size - .818
Generally speaking, if it ain't"stock" it goes to Street Prepared,which allows lots of neat stuff.
Go over those limits, however, andyou will be in Prepared or Modified.Not many people run these classeslocally, so you could look at it asan easy trophy at a regular event,but the Index will kill you ifyou're not, uh, fully prepared.Next month: how to figure out ifyou can beat the guy on the bubble.

Driver's Education

We are really busy this spring andsummer. For our surprise SummitPoint event, we were oversubscribedthe first week of registration. Weaccepted 135 and about that manyshowed up. The first day got offto a soggy start, since it began torain during the drivers meeting,but we met in comfort in the new
classroom right in the paddock. Westarted the track program withinten minutes of the scheduled start,and 5 of those minutes were due to
the ambulance being late. We hadabout 10 spins in the instructorgroup, but the rain stopped, and wehad a splendid event.
There is a good possibility that wewill be able to have a June date
again next year at Summit Point.
Nearby is an application forMid-Ohio on Sept 28-29, which willbe run by Potomac, but jointlypromoted by Riesentoter. Mid-Ohiois not only a beautiful facilitybut the whole track has beenresurfaced and widened. It seemsthat east coast PGA regions havedifficulty filling up Mid-Ohio ontheir own, thus the joint promotion.Potomac has a pre-registrationperiod for their members, incontrast to our policy of openregistration. For this event, wewill also be able to pre-registerbefore out of region registrationbegins. For those of you who mayhave become frustrated in recentyears by the difficulty of gainingentry to Potomac events, here isyour chance. They are reallypleasant people and they run verygood programs.
For those familiar with Mid-Ohio,little promotion is needed. Forthose who have not been there andthink nothing could be good enough

to travel that far, have a littlefaith. It is worth the trip. Ineither case, it provides anopportunity to enjoy Mid-Ohio withfriends rather than strangers.
For several months, I have beenreporting that we have had a verybusy year so far. Actually it wasprobably too busy. We have had 4events in 5 months. I suspect someof you may be a little burned out.I know some of us on the track
event committee are. We are quiteat the mercy of the tracks relativeto securing dates. Our objectiveas a Club is to run a few qualityevents a year. We would prefer tosee them more spread out throughoutthe year. However, we have to takewhat we get. Next year, we have agood opportunity to spread eventsout a little more.

What's your color?

Noting that the season is wellunderway, I have become increasinglyconcerned at the paucity ofinstructional articles in DER
GASSER covering track events.Being the sort of "take charge"person that I am, I have decided torectify the situation by writingthis, and possibly future epistles.One important factor of trackevents that has never been properlyexplained is just what the rungroup colors really mean. I havethoughtfully provided the correctmeanings below.
GREEN; Figuratively means novice,but in this context refers to the
color of the instructors face as he
becomes seasick from the bobbingand weaving driving style of hisstudent. Also refers to money,which some Green drivers (thosebitten by the speed bug) are readyto spend, in prodigious amounts, inorder to make their cars go faster.Conventional wisdom here is to work
on driving skills.
BLUE: Means melancholy, and that iscertainly what the drivers in thisgroup feel after they realize howmuch they like this sport, but howfar they have to go to be as goodas the Red group. Sometimesmistaken for "BLEW", as in "youblew that turn, you blew thatbraking point, etc". Take heartBlue drivers, with some work andtime, you will make it to White.
WHITE: As in "White knuckled". This
refers to the driving style of theWhite groupers, as well as theirunfortunate instructor hostages.It seems that in this phase, thedrivers have figured out how to gofast, but without any real skill orconsistency. This makes for
interesting experiences like goinginto a corner 10 mph faster thanthe lap before, hence the whiteknuckles. This is a transitionalperiod, kind of like adolescence;if your parents let you live,you'll become an adult andeverything will be all right.
BLACK: Financially defined as beingprofitable, and running smoothly.And Black group drivers are justthat, "In the Black". Everythingis calm and well controlled. Theyhave developed their ability to gofast through years of practice, butafter surviving White, haveacquired the patience to drive at 9tenths lap after lap, and enjoystaying on the track. So why doall of you want so desperately tomove up to Red?
RED: Means "Red Mist", similar towhat a bull feels when he sees thematador's red cape. This is therun group for the instructors, inwhich the cautions and smoothnessso painstakingly developed throughthe years are thrown right out thewindow in search of another 1/2second reduction in laptime. Allof the warnings and emphasis onsafety and drivers education arewashed away by the red mist whenDave Donohue is right behind you,and you are damned if you are goingto let him by! Red also means Hot,and that is what the Red driversare, HOT. After bouncing around instudent cars all day in 95 degreeweather, you'd be hot, too. Andfinally Red means financiallybankrupt, which most of us are,trying to feed our cars those everincreasing speed dollars.
So there you have it. I hope thatyou have found this informative,and useful the next time you are ata track event. Next month - does

More Serial Numbers

This is some follow-up informationon what I supplied for Bob Patton'srecent article on serial numbers.
It is from VW and Porsche Parts
Department VIN info sheets.
Concerning the late models, the VINcharacters in question are in thepositions 4, 5 and 6. They areassigned for USA (Japan??) use.European models use "ZZZ" as statedin the article.
Position 4 seems to relate to bodystyles. For example, 911 coupesare "A", Targas and Cabs are "E".Of course, there are someincons i s t enc i es.
Position 5 seems to relate toengine type, i.e., 911SCs are "A",Carreras are "B". Again, there aresome problems, especially with the944 and 944S.
Position 6 is the restraint systemtype; "0" is active (seatbelts),"2" is passive (airbags).
I have the 4, 5 and 6 code letterbreakdown for VW, but not forPorsche, but I have inferred theabove. There are quite a fewmistakes (or typos) in The Mart: 16character codes, "222", "0" (zero)for "0", "Q", etc.
Hope this has been of some interest.

Bearings are a vital part of allrotating machines. Without thislow-friction device, our machinescould never attain their highrunning speeds.
A lot of history surrounds thedevelopment of bearings, probablythe most interesting is in themanufacturing of the ball. AGerman was intrigued with makingcannon balls really round, so hedeveloped a machine containing twocounter-rotating grinding discs andthus got into the round cannon ballbusiness. What would the world be
like if we hadn't had round cannon
balls? Maybe square ones?
Your Porsche contains several typesof bearings, all serving specificneeds. For one, the uninterestingbut vital sleeve bearings whichsupport your crank. These run onan oil film only a few thousandthsof an inch thick and hence keep thecrankshaft from running on themetal part of the bearing. As apoint of interest, the higher yourrpm, the thicker this oil film gets.So don't be afraid to keep your rpmsup. Please note that your oilpressure reading has nothing to dowith the hydrodynamic pressuredeveloped between the bearing andthe crank. This pressure is over1500 psi, and your oil pressureindication of 50 psi merely tellsyou that you are delivering oil tothis area. The rest is done by thedynamics of the crank/sleeve combo.
You have radial ball bearings inyour alternator, among other places.These are chosen because they havethe least amount of friction amongthe typical industrial bearings. Afew things to be aware of is thatthey should never be dropped, andmust be installed with care and some
knowledge of what you are doing.This goes for their removal also.It is designed to take loads in avertical plane (radial) with alimited load in the horizontal
plane (thrust). They can run atvery high speeds (dental handdrills run at over 400,000 rpm andare lubricated by water, while youralternator may see 10,000 rpm andis lubricated with oil or grease.)
Without lubrication, all bearingswill fail sooner or later. When
you choose a lubricant you have twobasic options - oil or grease. Oilis used for high speed, low frictionoperation, and can be from threefamilies: petroleum, synthetic, orsilicone products. There are manyothers: our company, for instance,has over 800 different kinds of
lubes available for our bearings.
The point to note here is that thepetroleum products can carry about2 times the load of the synthetics(diesters) and 3 times that of thesilicone lubes. The same holds true
for greases; petroleum products havetemperature limits of about 250, thediesters about 400 and siliconesabout 500 degrees fahrenheit.
The tapered roller bearings in yourwheel hubs can take loads in the
radial and thrust directions since
the roller provides a much greatersurface area than the ball in the
ball bearing. The penalty is thatthe friction is about 50-100%
higher. These bearings are almostalways filled with grease or a highviscosity (thick) oil.
There are spherical bearings usedto transmit heavy loads along a rod,this combination being known as arod end; when it is on a shaft itis called a link, and the puzzlegoes on. Anyway, you'll find thesetype bearings in the steering, and

suspension, or support members.These may be greased via a nippleor have a low-friction liner built
into them. They rotate very slowlyand allow a lot of misalignment inthe areas where they are used.
Do bearings wear out? Does lubewear out? Yes and no. Even thoughyou keep within the design life ofthe bearing, microscopic flakes ofthe metal wear away and contaminatethe lube, acting as an abrasive.Therefore, replace bearings beforethey fail, if at all practical.
Even if the bearing does not fail,lubrication will. The petroleumproducts change chemically afterjust sitting around for 2 years andeven sooner at high temperatures(250 degrees): synthetics are goodfor five years, and silicones tendto seek freedom, i.e., they migrateaway from the bearing surfaces.
The quickest way to wear out abearing is by letting dust and dirtget into the system. Keep themclean is the rule. The best way tohandle bearings is with your whiteshirt and tie on. Get the idea?
Over-lubrication is as bad as no
lubrication. In reality, theamount of oil it takes to lube a
mediiim sized ball bearing is at theend of this sentence. That's
right, it is the size of a period.The rest is used to carry the heataway. Too much lube causes the
balls to churn through the lubecreating more heat. The ideal lubequantity is to fill the bearing to1/3 of its free volume with grease,or if you use oil, just a few drops.
So clean up those bearings, alwaysuse new grease or oil, handle withcare and keep them turning, turningand turning.

Cheaper in the US

proposition that Porsches are cheapcars. Yet in comparison to pricesin England, Porsches in the US, newand used, are bargains.
