● With a population of over 46 million people (the third largest in Latin America),Colombia is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in Latin America, UKexports to Colombia increased by 126% between 2009 and 2012 – the highest ofany emerging market.

● Colombia enjoyed 5.8% growth in 2011, 4.0% for 2012 and 4.25% in 2013.Growth for 2014 is predicted at 4.5%

● Colombia attracted over $16bn of Foreign Direct Investment (of which $13.1bnwas for the extractive industries) – an increase of 25% compared to 2011.

● Colombia has been highlighted by the World Bank as a ‘top reformer’ in five of thelast eight years. Inflation is at 1.84% – the lowest in Latin America.

● Colombia was invited to start OECD accession negotiations in May 2013.Colombia is the top country in Latin America (and sixth in the world) for investorprotection according to the World Bank. Colombia’s Credit Rating has been raisedto Investment Grade by Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s.

● The strengths of the Colombian market include:● Skilled workers and the second most flexible labour market in Latin America;● A developing location as a regional hub (6 hours flight to all other Latin

American capitals and three hours to Miami), with duty-free access to the otherAndean nations, Mercosur and Chile; and

● A tradition of stable economic growth, democratic government and prudenteconomic management in a region that has seen a number of economic crises(Colombia has never defaulted on its sovereign debt).

● The Colombian government intends to secure $100bn in investment ininfrastructure over the next eight years. It will invest $85bn in oil and gas. It willinvest some $40bn in defence and security over the next five years. Colombia’snational budget for education is around £12billion.

● Colombia enjoys fourteen Free Trade Agreements. In the last year, Colombia hasfinalised Free Trade Agreements with the US, Canada, South Korea and the EU.

● The UK is the second largest foreign investors in Colombia, with investmentstotalling around $6bn in the last eight years.

● The Colombian city of Medellin was voted by the Wall Street Journal as the mostinnovative city in the world in March 2013.

● Colombia is the third largest economy in Latin America.

the world, with around 80 per cent of all its exports being manufactured goods. ● UK exports of good to Mexico in 2012 were valued at £1.1billion ● The UK is Mexico’s fifth largest investor, with an investment stock of $12.2 billion

US in 2011 and having a 3% share of total foreign direct investment in thecountry.

● UK exports of goods and services to Mexico have increased by 35.8% since 2009● Mexico is one of the largest markets for luxury goods in Latin America, including

cars. It is the 8th largest car producer in the world, In 2013 it produced almostthree million vehicles.

● Mexico has the sixth largest electronics industry in the world, and is the third mostimportant exporter of mobile phones, with a market value of US$9.8b.

● In 2011, Mexico was the seventh largest oil producer in the world and currentlyranks among the top 20 in terms of gas production.

● The environmental market in Mexico is valued at $8 billion and is the secondmost important in Latin America.

● In 2012 the UK was the sixth largest economy in the world: its GDP is US$2.44trillion (Centre for Economic and Business Research, World Economic LeagueTable 2013).

● UNCTAD reports that the UK recorded a 21.5 percent increase in the value of FDIinflows to US$62 billion in 2012, the highest increase among its European peers;the UK also increased its market share in global FDI inflows, from 3.2 percent to4.8 percent.

● The UK is the number one destination for companies setting up Europeanheadquarters, according to the Financial Times fDi Markets database (2012).

● The UK is home to Europe’s largest aerospace industry, and the world’s secondlargest, according to ADS, the UK’s Aerospace, Defence, Security and Spaceindustry trade organisation.

● The UK’s creative industries are worth over £36 billion a year, and export over£16 billion.

● The UK has the most developed online market in the world according to a studyby Cushman & Wakefield (Global Perspective on Retail: Online Retailing, July2013).

● Food and drink accounted for 15 percent of UK manufacturing output in 2012,making it the largest manufacturing sector in the UK.

● Six of the world’s top twenty universities are in the UK according to the QS WorldUniversity Rankings 2013.

● The UK is the global leader in offshore wind power, with more capacity installedthan the rest of the world put together (Offshore wind operational report 2012,Crown Estates 2013).

● London was ranked first in the 2013 Global Financial Centres Index ofinternational financial centres.

● The UK is the largest European market for high-end consumer electronicsproducts (Consumer Electronics Market Report 2012/13, European InformationTechnology Observatory).

Rt. Hon Nick Clegg MPDeputy Prime Minister and Leader of the LiberalDemocrat PartyNick Clegg was born in Buckinghamshire in 1967 andstudied Social Anthropology at Cambridge and continuedhis post-graduate education at the University ofMinnesota and the College of Europe in Bruges. After a brief spell in journalism, Nick worked oninternational aid programmes and trade policy at theEuropean Commission. He was elected Member ofEuropean Parliament (MEP) for the East Midlands in1999 and served as Trade and Industry spokesman forthe European Liberal Democrat and Reform group until2004. He worked as a business consultant and part-timeuniversity lecturer before his election as MP for SheffieldHallam in 2005. In Parliament, Nick served as the Liberal DemocratSpokesperson on Europe (2005-6), Shadow HomeSecretary (2006-7) before becoming Leader in 2007. InMay 2010, Nick Clegg became Deputy Prime Ministerand Lord President of the Council in the CoalitionGovernment.

Lord Livingston of ParkheadMinister of State for Trade and InvestmentLord Livingston of Parkhead was appointed Minister ofState for Trade and Investment on 11 December 2013.Lord Livingston was CEO of BT Group from 2008 until2013. Over that period free cash flow tripled and BT hasbecome one of the best performing European Telcostocks. It invested heavily in one of the fastest fibre rolloutprogrammes in the world and launched a new TV sportsservice. Having joined BT in 2002, he served on the BTGroup Board as Group Finance Director and CEO BTRetail, its consumer and small business division. Prior to this, Lord Livingston was Group Finance Directorat Dixons Group plc from the age of 32 making him theyoungest FTSE 100 CFO by some distance. During histenure, Dixons grew revenue and profits strongly andcreated the UK’s first major internet IPO, Freeserve.Lord Livingston has also worked for 3i plc, Bank ofAmerica and Arthur Andersen. He was previously a nonexecutive director of Hilton Group plc and is currently anon executive director on the board of Celtic plc. He is aChartered Accountant.He was born in Glasgow and has a wife and 2 children.

Jane Bonham Carter was made a Liberal Democrat LifePeer in 2004. In 2012 she was appointed as the PrimeMinister’s Trade Envoy to Mexico. She is also DeputyConvenor of the Liberal Democrat peers and is currentlyCo-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary PolicyCommittee on Culture, Media and Sport and LiberalDemocrat DCMS spokesperson in the House of Lords.Previously she was Director of Communications for theLib Dems. Her career outside politics has been as atelevision journalist and executive. She was a producer atthe BBC on both ‘Panorama’ and ‘Newsnight’ andprogramme editor of Channel 4’s ‘A Week in Politics’.After leaving her job as Lib Dem communications directorshe returned to television, joining Brook LappingProductions.

This visit was supported by the UKTIEducation team in Mexico. As a follow on from thismission TVET UK plans to host several partnerorganisations to the UK during April 2014.In attending the visit in February, TVET UK’s intention isto follow up on existing relationships and proposedcollaboration opportunities.
