The School
Headmaster’s Welcome
Pangbourne is a place where the individual matters. First and foremost, we are a ‘people place’.
We are committed to the personal development of our pupils in the fullest sense. They are
encouraged to work hard towards academic success and we are proud of the results which
they achieve, but just as important is the development of their characters: their confidence and
values, their creative and physical skills and their appreciation of who they are and what they
can contribute to the world.
Our Flag Values of Kindness, Selflessness, Moral Courage, Initiative, Industry, Resilience and
Integrity underpin all we do as a College. They are rooted in our Christian ethos and go a long
way to prepare our pupils for life's challenges and the responsibilities of adulthood. Our aim is
to equip Pangbournians with the strongest possible foundations for their future.
We know that young people today face many challenges, not the least of which is their mental
health and wellbeing. We are strongly committed to providing the best pupil welfare
individually tailored for each person, and this has been recognised by inspecting and external
organisations.
Pangbourne is known for its outstanding pastoral care – recognised as excellent in recent ISI
inspections – and we take an integrated approach to caring for each pupil. We are not
complacent about the challenges which young people face and are always seeking to improve
the support which we can provide.
4
We provide all the other things a good school should: challenging academic curriculum, plenty
of sport and co-curricular opportunities, and 230 acres of wonderful Berkshire countryside in
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our small size, focus on the individual and
community feel are what make us special.
Current times – life with COVID-19
In these current challenging times we have worked hard to ensure that our environment is a
safe place for our pupils and staff. We have and will continue to follow Government advice
and have implemented stringent measures to minimise the risk to our community.
We have excellent provisions in place to be able to offer remote teaching and learning to all our
pupils. This was a massive benefit during the first lockdown and praise must go to the staff
and pupils who accepted and adapted to this new way of teaching tremendously well. We are
still offering remote teaching and learning to some of our international students who have not
yet returned to school. We are absolutely confident that, should we have to, the transition to
remote learning would be seamless, as it was in March 2020, and enable the continuation of a
high standard of education and pastoral care for our pupils.

“The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent.”
ISI Inspection, November 2019
About Us
Founded in 1917 as a training college for officers in the Merchant and Royal Navy,
Pangbourne College is now a thriving co-educational day and boarding school, educating 450
children aged 11 – 18 in a rural campus setting. The College is set in 230 acres in an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, yet is only minutes from the mainline train to London and
junction 12 of the M4, and only 45 minutes from central London. Our geographic location
makes us an ideal fit for international students and weekly boarders, as well as a thriving local
day market.
The College underwent a full inspection by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI) in
November 2019, and was judged ‘excellent’, the highest possible grading. Inspectors noted the
quality of educational and other achievements, and the high quality of pupils’ personal
development. The bulk of our leavers go on to university, with many going to Russell Group
universities and the remainder into other universities, foundation courses, apprenticeships and
work. We have a strong tradition of getting most (at least 75%) of our Sixth Form leavers into
their first choice higher education institution.
6
The College has a strong tradition of teaching character and leadership, and the College Flag
Values of resilience, kindness, industry, initiative, selflessness, moral courage and integrity
underpin everything we do. As a College, we focus on the individual, and we are committed to
helping each individual child achieve their best whilst at Pangbourne.
With our roots in the Merchant and Royal Navy, some ceremonial traditions still survive.
Pupils wear the Naval Number 2 uniform as their day to day uniform, and rooms within the
College still bear distinctly naval names (e.g. “Mess Hall” for the dining hall). A tradition of
parading and the ceremonial still exists as a weekly practice, plus six ‘College Sundays’ per
year. The aim being to provide pupils with the chance to learn teamwork, leadership,
performance, confidence, time management and community spirit.
Currently in the middle of a 2018-2023 College Development Plan, we are working towards our
long term vision of being ‘the best small co-educational boarding school in the UK’. A main
goal for the College in the current Development Plan is to grow to 500 pupils and increase the
proportion of girls nearer to 50:50.
7
Academic Life
Pangbourne offers a learning environment where pupils develop confidence, self-awareness,
creativity and independent thought. Education at Pangbourne ensures that each child can
maximise their potential in a supportive environment which promotes both learning potential
and well-being to develop the whole individual.
Students at Pangbourne are inspired and challenged to do the very best they can and
experience a variety of engaging lessons, memorable trips and learning tools which bring each
and every subject to life.
The number of pupils at Pangbourne ensures class sizes are small and there is more one to one
time with teachers. Pupils can rely on an experienced and empathetic group of teachers to
share their enthusiasm for their subjects and to enable them to realise their ambitions.
“A small, distinctive, grounded and family-oriented school that puts huge emphasis on
self-discipline, teamwork and leadership. Caring and supportive, Pangbourne buzzes with
activity and encourages every pupil to have a go.”

Co-Curricular Programme
Co-curricular opportunities add breadth and depth to each individual’s personal development.
There is a range of activities on offer for pupils to take part in outside the classroom and a
significant feature is the compulsory element of challenge.
The purpose of the co-curricular programme is to develop pupils’ confidence, values and skills,
so that they can make a difference. For a significant number of our pupils, their strengths are
seen most clearly in the co-curricular sphere, and we try to encourage both participation and
excellence.
Competitive sporting fixtures take place during the week and on Saturdays. We have excellent
sporting facilities at the College including a number of multi-use sports pitches for Rugby,
Football and Cricket, a floodlit Astro pitch for Hockey and Tennis, Netball courts, an outdoor
heated swimming pool and indoor sports facilities, including a strength and conditioning suite.
We are very fortunate to have a prime riverside location on the Thames for Rowing. Riding is
offered at dedicated stables and golf, sailing and clay pigeon shooting also feature on the
menu.
Music, Drama and the Arts are equally as important in the co-curriculum. We have an award
winning Music building where we are able to offer individual music lessons to pupils in state
of the art facilities, along with a number of bands and musical groups. Our Marching Band is
an integral part of our ceremonial traditions. Drama is enthusiastically supported by staff and
pupils and we are able to put on ambitious drama and musical productions.
9
Outdoor adventure training is at the heart of Pangboune life with all pupils taking part in the
Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award in Year 9 and many going on to achieve Silver and Gold
awards. Challenging expeditions take participants to Wales, the New Forest and the Lake
District to enable them to gain the most from this opportunity. Alongside this we also offer a
Combined Cadet Force programme, compulsory during Year 10, which is invaluable in helping
students gain self-discipline and to learn to work together in a team to achieve objectives.
A strong community spirit is very much part of our ethos and we have formed partnerships
with local schools and academies to share our facilities and staff experience. We also have a
link with the Nabugabo Community Learning Centre in Uganda.
Full details of our co-curriculum programme can be found on our website.

Sports teams consistently achieve success in local, regional and national competitions with a significant
number of pupils representing the county in a wide range of sports.

self-worth and academics will follow.”
