SMFD OPERATES SIX FIRE STATIONS (including an airport station), protects approximately 23 square miles and provides

fire and emergency medical services to approximately 108,000 constituents in the City of Santa Maria. SMFD responds to approximately 10,000 calls for service each year and has an active automatic aid response agreement with Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and is an active participant in the California mutual aid system. We provide customer-centered fire and emergency medical services.

SMFD provides all risk emergency services, as well as public education programs, fire prevention, and life safety measures to the City’s residents. These services support the Fire Department’s mission of effectively preserving lives and protecting property. The department provides Emergency Services, which include pre-hospital emergency medical services at the Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT-1) level; response to structural, vehicular and vegetation fires, hazardous materials response, water rescue, trench rescue, public assistance, urban search and rescue team (Type 1), and wildland response team. 2019/20 OBJECTIVESn Hire nine new Firefighters to staff a new response

unit at Fire Station No. 1, a Deputy Fire Chief, two Fire Prevention Inspectors, and an Office Assistant.

n Continue multi-department collaborative taskforce work to implement a Computer Automated Dispatch system and radio system that meet growing needs.

n Improve emergency response times within the downtown core; maintain or enhance a 90% average response time standard performance of seven minutes for calls for service to first responders arriving on-scene.

n Refine the Department’s Strategic Plan; update the fireworks booth permitting process; update Standards of Response Coverage.

n Design and remodel the Fire Administration offices to accommodate additional staff.

n Conduct an analysis of the types of on-the-job injuries, causes, apparatus or equipment involved, and cost related to loss of work and medical treatment, and develop strategies to reduce their occurrence.

n Continue to develop our top-notch fire academy, and our newly created college internship program.

the IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILEOUR DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF SHOULD HAVE an in-depth knowledge of modern fire protection principles, fire

and labor administration, emergency response, public fire education and prevention, and training methods. We seek a Deputy Fire Chief who is knowledgeable and competent regarding fire service operations and public sector administrative processes. Our ideal candidate will be inclusive, creative, innovative, financially and technologically savvy, and a knowledgeable administrator. You should have a passion for the work you are doing and enthusiastically seek collaborative partnerships and community engagement, as well as deliver customer service excellence. BACKGROUND & EDUCATION:n Ideally, seven years of experience in a municipal fire

agency providing fire command for a full range of urban fire protection services, including two years administrative and supervisory responsibility at the Battalion Chief or Acting Battalion Chief level or higher.

n Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, fire science, or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

n Possession of licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment: CPR

Fire Officer II

State approved Hazardous Material First Responder Incident Commander Certificate within twelve months of appointment.

California Driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and be insurable to operate City vehicles.

Desired: California State Board of Fire Services Certification as a Chief Officer.

n Successful candidate must pass a background investigation and pre-employment physical/drug screening. New employees will be required to sign a statement affirming that, as a condition of continued employment, they shall refrain from using tobacco products.

SALARY& BENEFITSThe annual salary range is: $152,008–$184,766 DOE/DOQ; salary will

POST-EMPLOYMENT HEALTH PLAN (PEHP): City contributes $92/ pay period to a fund that will provide reimbursement for out-of-pocket cost of qualified medical expenses and medical insurance premiums upon separation or retirement.

DENTAL & VISION INSURANCE: City pays for entire family.

VACATION: Minimum 2 weeks/year and up to 4 weeks.

MANAGEMENT LEAVE: 64 hours/year.

HOLIDAYS: Seven holidays/year; and eligible to receive, on a pro-rated basis, 40 hours of floating time/year to be scheduled off or cashed-out.

SICK: 12 days/year.
