• By March 1, 1933 14 States closed banks

• March 6 Roosevelt called National bank holiday

• Payrolls could not be met

Many banks never reopened

Those that did reopen had shortage of small bills and coins

What will we do for money?

• Before March 6 about 400 communities were already using emergency money

• After March 6 there was a flood of scrip

• Scrip took many

forms!

Depression of 1930-1934

• 12 Million unemployed

• 5000 bank failures 1930-32

• People not paying taxes

• Cities unable to borrow money

• Run on money from solvent banks

• Acute shortage of coins and small bills
