ASPIRATIONAL GOALS

2025

2030

2035

All fuel-burning technologies for sale meet an energy performance of >= 90% (condensing)

All air-source heat pumps for sale meet a SCOP* of >2.5

SPACE HEATING

All fuel-burning water heating technologies for sale have an energy performance of >= 90% (condensing)

WATER HEATING

A residential natural gas heat pump with a SCOP of >1.2 is cost-effective (R&D target)

A residential cold climate air-source heat pump with a SCOP of >2.75 is cost-effective (R&D target)

Renewable technologies/resources are supported

All electric water heaters for sale have an energy performance of more than 100% (energy factor >1)

A residential gas heat pump with an EF >1.4 is cost-effective (R&D target)

All space heating technologies for sale meet an energy performance of >100%

All water heating technologies for sale have an energy performance >100% (energy factor > 1)

KEY BARRIERS• More innovation needed to bring most electric heat pump models currently available

in line with the medium-term goals under cold climate conditions• No standardized test procedures and limited testing facilities for rating energy

performance in cold temperatures• High upfront cost and consumer skepticism over performance and long term

maintenance• Qualified installers are not available across all of Canada - performance of the heat

pumps depends on the integrity of the installation• Gas heat pump technology lags behind the advances in electric heat pumps, and lacks

key market and technical development to demonstrate functionality in cold temperatures

INDUSTRY FEEDBACK ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIESQuestion: What are the highest R&D priorities to support market transformation toward aspirational goals for electric heat pumps and gas heat pumps?

• 24 unique R&D activities/idea generated • Top priorities:

1. Provide lab infrastructure for optimizing and testing heat pumps, particularly in cold temperatures

2. Remove barriers in building codes that prevent the use of gas heat pumps3. Develop technologies and controls to reduce energy used for defrost cycles; research into

using natural refrigerants, some of which may be more efficient in heating mode (electric)4. Monitoring of air source heat pump performance in cold climates (electric)5. Research into reducing the cost of heat exchangers and refrigerants used in gas heat

pumps

HEAT PUMPS – OVERCOMING THE BARRIERS

Question: What are the highest priority deployment activities to support market transformation toward aspirational goals?

• 47 unique deployment activities and/or idea generated • Top priorities:

• Cold climate air source heat pumps (CCHP)• Release standard and develop qualified product listing• Create 3rd party certification program to ensure credible performance data• Design guide for selecting and sizing CCHPs

• Geothermal heat pumps: utility support to reduce up-front cost of ground loops• Information / education / training

• Collaboration between industry and governments on verified contractor training• Develop test procedures and performance standards, education programs, incentives,

and targets for combination space and water heating heat pump systems• Educational materials with government credibility and good marketing message
