2 COLEMAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER
FROM THE DEANDePaul’s entrepreneurship program has long been recognized as a national leader, and this report of recent Coleman Entrepreneurship Center activities reflects its ongoing vitality and the important role it occupies in the
Driehaus College of Business.
Entrepreneurship is part of DePaul’s DNA. We were one of the first universities in the nation to incorporate entrepreneurship into our curriculum. In 1982 Harold Welsch, management professor and Coleman Chair in Entrepreneurship, recognized the value of classes in new venture formation and management. A major endowment grant from the Coleman Foundation in 2003 established the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, adding another dimension to the program.
Over the years, DePaul’s entrepreneurship program has consistently ranked among the nation’s finest. For 2016, it was selected once again for Princeton Review’s “Top 25 Entrepreneurship Programs” guide. Our undergraduate program ranked No. 12 and our graduate program ranked No. 15 among more than 2,000 programs in the United States. Our recent international initiatives will enable us to expand our efforts in the years ahead.
DePaul alumni are prominent figures in the Chicago business community—as founders, funders, employees and supporters. DePaul’s Coleman Entrepreneurship Center is one of the reasons why. We are proud of our entrepreneurial heritage and pleased that the Center’s programs are helping to develop DePaul students into the entrepreneurial leaders of tomorrow.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORThe 2014-15 academic year was one of energy and growth for the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center as we expanded our reach and planned for the future. Our programs touched thousands of students, alumni and community members.
Participants interacted with more than a hundred Chicago area entrepreneurs, and received valuable startup advice and expert guidance on navigating the many stages of business growth.
We also made great progress toward expanding the physical presence of the Center, with plans for a new entrepreneurship suite that will occupy 4,038 square feet on our DePaul Loop Campus. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, this space will enable the Center to harness the energy and passion of all DePaul entrepreneurs in one central space. It will house Center staff offices, event space, meeting and conference rooms, a startup lab and offices for visiting entrepreneurs. We can’t wait to see the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit that emerge from our new space.
As the hub for entrepreneurship at DePaul, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center connects with students, alumni, faculty, staff and the broader Chicago business community. Although a new leadership role at another university takes me away from DePaul, I will remain involved with the Center—and I encourage you to do so as well. In these pages you will discover the many ways to participate. Come join in the efforts to guide the next generation of entrepreneurs at DePaul University!

Student Competitions and AwardsTo inspire hands-on venture creation and promote competition, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center held two venture challenges during the
2014-15 academic year. Each competition encouraged students to express their
creative ideas in ways that could lead to a successful enterprise, and deepen their thinking, planning and presentation skills. Members of the Chicago entrepreneurial community generously gave their time to serve as student advisors and judges.
5th Annual Student Innovation Awards In February 2015, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, in partnership with DePaul’s Center for Creativity and Innovation, awarded scholarships to ten students whose cutting-edge ideas put them at the forefront of innovation at DePaul. Each year, the competition salutes students’ creativity, originality, problem-solving abilities and opportunity recognition skills. The 2015 Student Innovation Awards were co-sponsored by the Chicago Innovation Awards and featured student individuals or teams with innovations relating to everything from healthcare technology to fashion.
Out of 75 applications from students across the university, the 5th Annual Student Innovation Awards recognized winners in each category–undergraduate and graduate. Gold Level winners received a $2,000 DePaul scholarship; Silver Level winners, a $1,000 DePaul scholarship; and Bronze Level winners, a $500 DePaul scholarship. Three Honorable Mention winners were also recognized.
In the undergraduate category, Monica Gryorowicz (Safe Crosser) received first prize, the second-prize winner was Khoa Nguyen (HealthPrentice), and the third-prize winners were Elaine Ackerman (Pulp Paper) and Jenny Fuerte (KidsBand + App). In the graduate category, first-prize went to Casandra Bungert (WeatherBox), second-prize was awarded to Sue Nicole Susenburger (Horse-Pilates.com), and the third-prize winner was Adam H. Grossman (Knight Out Collection). Honorable mentions were awarded to Mariana Gutierrez (3D Recycling Printer (3DRP), Morgan Schulhof (IPSER), and David Allen (Phonella).
We thank the numerous individuals who volunteered as our online judges and coaches for this competition. In addition, we thank Lisa Gundry, Director of DePaul’s Center for Creativity and Innovation, our partner on this event. We extend a special appreciation to our Coleman Entrepreneurship Center Advisory Board and the Chicago Innovation Awards for sponsoring our student scholarships. We also thank Tom Kuczmarksi, Luke Tanen and Paul Kitti of the Chicago Innovation Awards for their assistance with the event.
DePaul University President, Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider (4th from L), with the 5th Annual Student Innovation Awards Finalists.
DePaul students, faculty and staff, along with members of the Chicago community, packed the room at TechNexus for a creativity-filled evening honoring the Student Innovation Awards winners. The evening also featured a panel showcasing the winners of the Chicago Innovation Awards.

Launch DePaul 2015In Spring 2015, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center organized Launch DePaul 2015, a student new venture competition that awarded $17,000 to six student teams to help them launch new companies.
From a collection of nearly 30 team entries, our volunteer online judges narrowed the field to six final teams, who pitched their venture ideas at the Launch DePaul Awards Event on May 5, 2015. The Awards Night event brought together DePaul students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the Chicago entrepreneurial community for a lively evening of student presentations.
Joining us as VIP judges were Seth Kravitz, Co-Founder, Technori; Maura O’Hara, Executive Director, Illinois Venture Capital Association; John Pletz, Senior Reporter – Technology, Crain’s Chicago Business; and Kip Read, Senior VP – Commercial Banking, American Chartered Bank. We were honored to have Suzanne Nance, Emmy Award-winning Broadcaster and Host, 98.7FM WFMT Chicago as our honorary emcee for the evening.
In the undergraduate division, the judges awarded the $4,000 first prize to UpRide, a bicycle-to-elliptical conversion kit founded by Elizabeth Hakimi. The $2,500 second prize was awarded to Ryan Siepka and his company, AxeCrate, a subscription box of items for guitarists. KidsBand, a wearable that monitors a child’s health and location founded by Jenny Fuerte, received the third prize of $1,000.
In the Graduate Division, the judges awarded the $4,000 first prize to Horse Pilates, founded by Sue Nicole Susenburger, an online service that offers cross-training instruction for horses. The $2,500 second prize was awarded to Yanqin Yang and her company, LingoStone, a website/app for learning English with a built-in marketing tool for companies seeking to connect with Chinese consumers. Smart Insurance
Saver, a “Priceline for car insurance” founded by Syed Hussain, received the third prize of $1,000.
One team in each division received an Audience Choice Award of $1,000. The Audience Choice Award winning teams were UpRide (Elizabeth Hakimi) in the Undergraduate Division and LingoStone (Yanqin Yang) in the Graduate Division.
A very special thank you to our Launch DePaul 2015 sponsors: Accounting firm Kutchins, Robbins & Diamond (Gold) social talent recruiter QUEsocial (Silver), Chicago coworking community Grind

Outreach and Community Involvement
DePaul University has a distinctive connection to the global city of
Chicago, which provides both context and content for our students’ learning.
In 2014-15, the Center’s outreach programs connected students to the world of business and illustrated to them our role in Chicago’s dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Startup Alley Internship FairOn February 13, 2015, fifteen Chicago startups joined us for our first Startup Alley at DePaul’s Winter Internship Fair. DePaul University’s Career Center and the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center hosted the event, which was held in the atrium of the Lincoln Park Student Center.
Hundreds of students attended the fair, and Startup Alley served as the key connection with area entrepreneurs. DePaul students were excited to have access to such dynamic internships offered
by startup companies and told us, “More startup companies!” for future internship fairs.
Companies left with a good feeling about the quality of students they met, and plan to hire DePaul students for internships or other positions at their companies. Commenting on the value the event delivered for new ventures, one entrepreneur explained, “As a startup, you need to be creative in how to find the best talent. This is a unique opportunity to gain exposure you would not otherwise have as you get started.”
Companies
High School Pitch CompetitionIn December 2014, the Center hosted 44 students from Rolling Meadows and Prospect High Schools in District 214, for a Business Pitch Competition. Ten student teams gave 5-minute presentations on their business ideas, competing for certificates of achievement. Our panel of judges included Judy Hogel, Executive Director of the Chicago Family Business Council; DePaul alumni Greg Jaros and Rob Pasquesi; and DePaul Computing and Digital Media professor and Coleman Fellow veteran, Terry Steinbach. Students also heard about student life at DePaul and the college application process from DePaul Admissions representative, Michael Lewis, as well as about the many activities of the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center.
Startup Internship ProgramThanks to a grant from the John E. and Jeanne T. Hughes Foundation, the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center sponsored six DePaul undergraduate student internships at Chicago startups. Six qualified students were selected from a pool of student applicants. They reviewed applications from entrepreneurial startups to determine where they would work for 125 hours over the course of summer 2015.
Sophomore Jasmine Farley, a Computer Science/Software Engineering major, worked for FanPay, a crowdfunding website helping college athletes earn an education. Taylor Jennings, a DePaul Junior double-majoring in Business/Hospitality Leadership and Marketing, interned at Chicago Foodseum, the first nonprofit food museum. Junior Lena Newkold, a Management/Entrepreneurship major with a minor in Studio Art, worked at Meliora K, a sustainable cleaning products company. DePaul’s Academic Entrepreneurship Program
The entrepreneur has become the economic hero of modern industrial society. China and Russia have adopted private enterprise as their basis of creating wealth, with Cuba joining in more recently. Ideas and opportunities abound, and both U.S. political parties claim the entrepreneur to be the basis of their platform. Creative crowdfunding is beginning to fill the stream of financing necessary to grow new businesses. Technology is working hand in hand with financiers to support creative ideas and operate business more efficiently. The number of apps is growing exponentially, and women and minority enterprises are breaking barriers. Strategies are being formulated with the help of entrepreneurship centers, incubators, accelerators, co-working spaces and small business development centers. Entrepreneurship at DePaul is at the forefront of these new models of economic growth. What an exciting time to be an entrepreneur!
Harold P. Welsch, PhD Founder and Director of Entrepreneurship Program, Coleman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship
The Coleman Entrepreneurship Center’s programming is enhanced by its close relationship with DePaul’s internationally recognized academic entrepreneurship program. Through exposure to top entrepreneurship faculty who bring their own startup experience to the classroom, DePaul students gain knowledge from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In addition, DePaul’s entrepreneurship faculty is committed to cultivating entrepreneurship across the university and in the larger Chicago community through outreach, mentoring and the Coleman Fellows program.
DePaul Entrepreneurship Faculty (2014-15)
Coleman FellowsColeman Fellows are DePaul University faculty who teach in disciplines outside the Driehaus College of Business. They integrate concepts of entrepreneurship into their classes, extending the reach and impact of entrepreneurship education across campus. Upon the completion of their fellowship (generally one year), they retain an ongoing connection to DePaul’s Entrepreneurship program. They also continue as part of the Coleman Foundation Entrepreneurship Community of Practice, a growing national cohort of colleagues dedicated to spreading entrepreneurship education across college and university campuses.

12 COLEMAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP CENTER
Our New HomeLast year, we launched an initiative to expand our campus footprint with a new dedicated space for entrepreneurship in the DePaul Center. Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, this 4,038-sq. ft. space will be the new home for the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center. It will bring together co-working space,
Center administrative offices, advisors, mentors, and training to support student entrepreneurs, recent alumni, faculty and staff.
This project has required an ambitious fundraising campaign, which today is 85% complete. The Center is scheduled to open in 2016, pending the campaign’s successful completion. We thank all of our donors who have supported this initiative to date. Special thanks to the Coleman Foundation, the Center’s founding benefactor, for their generous lead gift to the project.
If you would like to make a gift to help complete our fundraising efforts for this exciting project, please contact TJ Veneris in the Office of Advancement at DePaul University at (312) 362-7428.
With its moveable worktables and chairs, the new space is easily transformed into an event space for lectures and presentations open to the university and guests from the broader Chicago business community.
An 18-person training room (above) will offer private space for educational programs. The suite also includes two offices for entrepreneurs-in-residence, a 10-person conference room, a small private advising room, a common reception area, and the Center’s administrative offices.
The central area of the new Coleman Entrepreneurship Center space will be the Startup Lab, a flexibly furnished large hall with dual functionality. As configured above, the space is a working/meeting space for student teams that have demonstrated their commitment to launching a new venture. (The alternative configuration is shown below right).
