VOLUME 2 ISSUE 1 DECEMBER 2013

Welcome to our latest Newsletter and do permit me to use this plat-form to update you on some of the Department’s headline achieve-ments for 2013.

I was tempted to say that these accomplishments are in no particular order, but con-cluded on reflection that the top billing should go to be the Department's remarkable haul of over 400 new graduates, nearly a quarter higher than the figure for 2012. Do join me in congratulating these latest members of the Department’s alumni commu-nity, and in wishing them all the best for the future. Producing top quality graduates typically requires the collective effort of all Depart-mental staff, so a huge dollop of thanks is due to all my colleagues for their generous service and citizenship during the past year. Colleagues also deserve immense credit for the many other impactful achievements reported in this Newsletter, including pres-tigious accreditations from elite professional bodies, successful bids to host premier international conferences, appointments to coveted editorial boards, publications in top ranked journals, presentations in major international conferences, and policy and practice-focused seminars hosted by our vibrant research centres for policy and busi-ness practitioners. Thanks colleagues. In concluding this message, I would like to pay a special tribute to our immediate past Head of Department, Professor Linda Trenberth, who completed her impactful tour-of-duty during 2013. Linda was committed service personified and a driving force for much of the Department’s growth over the past few years. Her boundless energy will be mightily missed, but I am sure you would all join me in wishing Linda the very best in her new role. Once again, thanks for your support and looking forward to our continuing collabora-tion during 2014. Best wishes. Professor Kevin Ibeh Assistant Dean /Head of Department of Management

The Department of Management has joined forces with The Chartered

Institute of Marketing ( CIM ) which is the leading professional body for

marketers worldwide in order to give our students the opportunity to gain

CIM professional qualifications through their Multi Award Pathway

( M AP ) . Our MSc Marketing Suite ( consisting of MSc Marketing, Inter-

national Marketing, Marketing Communications, Services & Retail Market-

ing and Sport Marketing ) has been mapped against CIM qualifications to

offer our students exemptions. Our students need to achieve at least a

pass in their Masters to be awarded the CIM exemptions.

Prof. George Christodoulides said,

“ W e are delighted that the CIM has recognised the robustness of our

Marketing Masters programmes at Birkbeck and has granted our students

50% exemptions from their Professional Diploma. This globally recog-

nised professional qualification in conjunction with their Masters will give

our graduates a leading edge in the ever so competitive employment mar-

ket. ”

As a research network, we are exploring the ‘ alternatives within ’ – i.e., the alternative paths of

economic development – that became apparent in our cross-country analysis of the six Liberal

have organized conference sessions for the 2013 Society for the Advancement of Socio-

Economics ( SASE ) and European Association for Evolutionary Economics ( EAEPE ) An-

nual Meetings; and we are in the process of submitting session proposals for the 2014 SASE

meetings. We are also coordinating research grant proposals, which will be submitted in 2014.
