5. Field of expertise

6. Major Research Facilities
The Department of Textile Technology has state of the art laboratories from fibre extruding
unit to garment manufacturing. Labwise details of the facilities is as follows:
Fibre Science Laboratory
The fibre science laboratory has various research equipments such as fibre extruder and
fibre identification instruments. Beside these this lab is also equipped with DSC and
Dynamic Mechanical Analysis instruments to study the thermal and mechanical properties
of fibre & fibre reinforced composites.

This lab comprises of fibre opening to yarn formation equipments such as lab models of
carding, draw frame, speed frame, ring frame and air jet spinning. Beside these there is
industrial model of carding, draw frame, ring frame and friction spinning.

The fabric manufacturing lab comprises warping, cone winding, braiding, power
loom, shuttle less looms (Rapier, air jet), flat knitting machine, small diameter
circular knitting machine, inter lock, rib knitting machines, etc.

The textile chemical processing laboratory is well equipped with various lab scale
dyeing machines such IR dyeing machine, Jigger dyeing machine, Winch, Rota dyer,
Lab scale Stenter, Drying chamber, Washing machine, Centrifugal machine, Ultra-
sonicators, UV visible spectrophotometer, HPLC, Computer Colour Matching
instrument, wash fastness tester, light fastness tester, rubbing fastness tester,
sublimation fastness tester, etc.

Textile Testing Laboratory
The testing lab is equipped with fibre, yarn, fabric test and garment testing equipments
such as air permeability tester, CSP tester, bursting strength tester, crease recovery
tester, thickness tester, stiffness tester, capillary flow porometer, UTM, fabric and
yarn abrasion meter, thermal conductivity tester, drape meter, HVI, Uster evenenss
tester, fibre fineness tester, Image analyser, etc

Advanced Fabric Research Laboratory
Lab is equipped with pulse-jet cleaning equipment, soil erosion control instrument and
positive thread feeding device designed and developed in the department. Beside these
lab consists of various equipments for studying fabric comfort properties ie moisture
management tester, dry rate tester, moisture vapour permeability tester, electronic
stiffness tester, thickness tester, etc.

Garment Manufacturing Laboratory
The Garment Manufacturing lab is well equipped with various sewing machines ie high
speed Brother/Juki single thread lock/chain stitch machines, lock stitch button holing
machine, single thread chain stitch button sewing machine, high speed, over lock stitch
machine. Beside these straight knife cutter, round knife cutter, button impact tester, steam
pressing machine, mannequins are there along with latest garment designing and
merchandising softwares with multiple licences ie Tuka tech, Reach fashion studio, Reach
merchandising Manager, Reach cut planner, etc.

International conference on Nov 1-3, 2019 in collaboration with University of Minho,
Portugal.
Department had collaboration with the University of Bolton, UK and Jayshree

8. Sponsored Research Projects: The department was sanctioned various research
projects by various funding agencies. A few of them are as follows:
‘Development of needle punched nonwoven blanket fabric’ was sanctioned to the
department by MHRD for Rs 15 lakhs from 2004-2009, PI of the project was Dr
Vinay Midha
‘Optimisation of production of PP/ Carbon nanofibre composite filament’ was
sanctioned to the department by MHRD for Rs 22 lakhs from 2005-2008, PI of the
project was Dr A Chatterjee
‘Designing Nonwoven Fabric for Pulse-Jet Filtration’ was sanctioned to the department
by MHRD for Rs 15 lakhs from 2005- 2010, PI of the project was Dr A Mukhopadhyay

‘Design of Pulse-jet Filtration Apparatus’ was sanctioned by Instrument Development
Division, Department of Science & Technology for Rs 52.28 lakhs from 2011-2015.
An indigenous new filtration instrument based on pulse-jet cleaning was developed in
the project; which is designed in a manner so that the test results obtained in flat
specimen can be correlated with industrial bag filter Patent was also obtained for
development of above said instrument. PI of the project was Dr A Mukhopadhyay.

‘Development of Positive thread feeding device for Sewing Machine’ was sanctioned
by Instrument Development Division, Department of Science & Technology for Rs
22.11 lakhs. from 2015-2018. Dr Vinay Midha is the PI and Dr A Mukhopahdyay is
the CO-PI.
Needle threads are subjected to various stresses during the lockstitch sewing process
and therefore the tensile strength of the needle thread is significantly reduced. A
positive thread feeding device has been designed for positively feeding the needle
thread during the sewing process.
‘Designing of Fabric Tensile Impact Testing Instrument’ was sanctioned by Instrument
Development Division, Department of Science & Technology for Rs 36.02 lakhs. Dr A
Mukhopadhyay is the PI and Dr Vinay Midha is the CO-PI.
‘Designing of Fabric Wet Abrasion Tester’ was funded by CSIR for Rs. 29.30 lakhs
from 2017-2020. Dr A Mukhopadhyay is the PI.
‘Optimization of pulse cleaning parameters for achieving high level performance of
filter media during industrial pollution control’ is sanctioned under India–Austria
Scientific & Technological Co-Operation between Wissenschaftlich-
TechnischeZusammenarbeit (WTZ) and Department of Science And Technology
(DST) from 2018 – 2020. Dr A Mukhopadhyay is the PI and Dr A K Chaudhary is the
CO-PI.

FIST Project:
The department was funded for Rs 59 lakhs for FIST programme (Fund for
Improvement of S& T Infrastructure in higher educational institute under DST, GOI)
from 2010 – 2015.
9. Consultancy Projects
Rs 10 lakhs was funded by TIFAC (DST) for project entitled “Technology gap study
for the bicycle parts manufacturers cluster at Ludhiana” from 2011-2012. Dr. Rakesh
Chandra was PI and Dr JN Chakraborty, Dr. Arvind Bhardwaj, Mr. Rajiv Trehan
were Co PI.)
Rs 1.43 lakhs was funded by Punjab pollution control board for project entitled
“Assessment of trade effluent generated by dyeing/textile industries in Ludhiana from
2017 to till date. Dr J N Chakraborty was PI.
Consultancy project for EYLLP Golf View Corporate Tower-B, Sector 42, Gurgaon -
122002, India – 2015 and Varroc Polymers Pvt. Ltd, Aurangabad 431136, Consultancy
for Pacific Harish Industries Limited,Gujarat-396170. Dr A Mukhopadhyay was PI.
Technology Gap Analysis Study of “Sewing Machine Cluster at Ludhiana” was funded
by Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC),
Government of India. February 2011 – December 2012. Dr A Mukhopadhyay was PI.
10. Patents and Technology Transfer
NIT Jalandhar has transferred the right of manufacturing of test rigs (for characterizing
filter media used for pollution control in industries) to Kanwal Enterprises, Gurgaon,
Haryana. These test rigs, viz. a viz. pulse-jet filtration test rig and industrial filtration
rig have been developed through a project supported by Instrumentation Development
Programme (IDP) under Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of
India. The cost involved of this research project was Rs 52.28 lacs. Dr A
Mukhopadhyay, Principal Investigator, DST Project has applied for patenting both of
his invention viz. a viz. pulse-jet filtration test rig and industrial filtration rig.
Title: An Apparatus For Testing Cleanable Filter Media In Tubular Form
Title: An Apparatus For Testing Cleanable Filter Media In Flat Form
Bedsheet cum Patient Shifting device: Bedsheet has been designed in such a manner
that it can work as a patient shifting device. The bedsheet contains tubes/channels on
both sides and the steel rods can be inserted to convert the bedsheet into a stretcher or
patient shifting device. After the shifting of the patient, the steel rods can be removed
and it can work as a bedsheet only. The patent has been applied in 2016 by Dr Vinay
Midha.

Instrument for testing soil erosion control performance of geomeshes: an
instrument with wider test cores has been designed, which can be used to measure the
soil erosion control performance of the geomeshes. The patent filing is in process by
Dr Vinay Midha.
