Concentration: Manufacturing EngineeringTechnologyThe Manufacturing Engineering Technology (MET) programis accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commissionof the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET), 111 Marketplace, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202,telephone: (410) 347-7700. The MET program is the appliedarm of Manufacturing Engineering and provides a moderncomprehensive education in elements of design (CAD, stan-dards, tolerances, product/process/facilities), engineeringmanagement (Quality Assurance, engineering economics,human factors, safety), manufacturing planning and strategy(materials, strategic issues, processes), management (super-vision, communication, organization), and computer appli-cations/automation (simulation, lean manufacturing tech-niques, machine/robot/PLC programming, CAM, materialhandling/layout). This education provides the background tobecome a Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT). TheSociety of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) administers thisexamination on campus twice per year. Major in Industrial TechnologyIndustrial Technology is a broad program designed to pre-pare the student for a position in the expanding technicalfields in government and industry. Included are concentra-tions in Concrete Industry Management, Construction Man-agement, and Industrial Management for manufacturing andservice industries.

In addition to the General Studies requirements, the mini-mum requirements for all Industrial Technology concentra-tions are1. completion of a minimum of 40-49 hours of engineer-

ing technology and industrial studies courses as listedunder the appropriate concentration;

2. completion of a core ofET 2310 Computer-Assisted Drafting/Design IET 3610 Introduction to Electricity and ElectronicsET 3910 Introduction to Operations ManagementET 4420 Industrial SafetyET 4710 Industrial Seminar;

Concentration: Concrete Industry ManagementThe concentration in Concrete Industry Management is de-signed to produce broadly educated, articulate graduates

grounded in basic science and mathematics who are knowl-edgeable of concrete technology and techniques and are ableto manage people and systems and to promote products orservices related to the concrete industry. Examples of oppor-tunities in the field include technical sales of products usedto manufacture concrete; production management of a readymix plant; sales and marketing of production, construction,and finishing equipment; product distribution management;construction specialist in an architectural/engineering firm ora governmental entity; and support positions such as a writeror editor for a technical magazine.

All students in the program complete a basic set of business-related courses including ECON 2410 or 2420, CSCI 1150,BLAW 3400, ACTG 3000, FIN 3000 or 3010, MGMT 3610and 3940, MKT 3820. However, no more than 25 percent ofthe total hours can be taken in the Jennings A. Jones Collegeof Business. Additionally, only juniors and seniors will be al-lowed to enroll in 3000- and 4000-level courses.

Concentration: Industrial Management TechnologyThis program, accredited by the National Association of In-dustrial Technology (NAIT), is designed to prepare studentsfor positions and careers in both the manufacturing and ser-vice sectors. Typical positions include first-level management,safety/ergonomics coordinator, production scheduler, inven-tory analyst, junior industrial engineer, work team facilitator,and other related positions.

Traditional TrackThe traditional track is designed for students with fewer thanfive years of current relevant industrial experience. Studentspursuing this track must complete either nine hours of in-ternship, nine hours of cooperative education, or a combi-nation of the two in an appropriate industrial setting. Stu-dents may transfer to the industry-based track if they accu-mulate five years of current relevant industrial experienceprior to graduation.

Up to 18 semester hours may be granted for approved work-based training.

Industry-based TrackStudents must have documented a minimum of five years ofcurrent relevant full-time industrial work experience approvedby a departmental committee prior to graduation to qualifyfor the industry-based track. The heart of this program is thefollowing 60-hour technical core which combines credit forwork-based learning with traditional coursework.

Concentration: Construction ManagementTechnologyThe Construction Management Technology concentration,accredited by the National Association of Industrial Technol-ogy (NAIT), is designed to prepare the student for supervi-sory or staff positions in a wide variety of construction-re-lated organizations (land developers, construction firms,wholesalers of construction materials, construction materialmanufacturers, lumber yards, etc.). This program could in-clude opportunities for employment in general supervision,human relations, sales, production and inventory control, andother areas.

Suggested areas for the required minor are Business Admin-istration, Economics, or Marketing.

Work-based Learning: Maximum 30 semester hours. Upto 18 semester hours may be granted for approved work ex-perience. Up to 18 semester hours may be granted for ap-proved work-based learning. Major in Environmental Scienceand TechnologyEnvironmental Science and Technology is an interdisciplinarymajor offered in the College of Basic and Applied Sciencesand administered by the Department of Engineering Tech-nology and Industrial Studies. The broad-based curriculumoffers coursework in the natural sciences, life sciences, math-ematics, agriculture, technology, and the arts. Six concentra-tions in environmental areas�Energy Resource Management,Engineering Technology and Safety, Planning, Site Analysis,Waste Management, and Water Resources�are available toallow the student to pursue an area of interest. No minor isrequired but is encouraged for EST students. Courses thatare part of a student�s major cannot be used in a minor. Therequirements for a major in Environmental Science and Tech-nology are listed below with 67 semester hours in the ESTcore, 30 hours in General Studies outside of the math andscience areas, and 20 to 29 hours in an identified specialtyor concentration.

Typical employment opportunities exist in the various levelsof governmental agencies and as environmental consultantsin manufacturing, construction, and agricultural industries insuch areas as air and water quality control, recycling, haz-ardous and solid waste management, and noise.

Concentration: Waste ManagementThe Waste Management concentration under the Environ-mental Science and Technology major looks at solid wastewhich is deposited on land and in water, sometimes causingserious environmental problems. However, wastes may behandled as a resource. Major issues of waste managementinclude problems and benefits associated with landfilling gar-bage and with the need to reduce the waste stream. Majorconcerns to be considered in assessing waste managementproblems and solutions are (1) environmental quality: wastesmust be managed so they do not pollute air or soil waterresources; nor should they be used in a way that might intro-duce a toxic or pathogen into the food chain; (2) organicwaste as energy resources: incineration can be studied as analternative to landfilling or application; organic wastes mayalso be a source of fertilizers.

This program, when taken in cooperation with the Universityof Tennessee, Tennessee State University, or Tennessee Tech-nological University, requires two years of study at that schoolfor the completion of requirements for a Bachelor of Engi-neering degree in chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, me-chanical, nuclear, agricultural engineering, or others as theyare made available. Standard Four-Year Engineering ProgramThis program will require four years to complete. The stu-dent is required to take the freshman and sophomore yearsindicated above and then transfer to an engineering school.The engineering school would then require two years of ad-ditional study to complete requirements toward the degree.The above program has been closely coordinated with sev-eral engineering schools. A student who elects to transfershould confer with his or her faculty advisor two semestersprior to transfer.

Engineering Cooperative ProgramSuperior students may be selected during the spring semes-ter of their freshman year for the cooperative engineeringprogram at Middle Tennessee State University, TennesseeTechnological University, or the University of Tennessee. Thisprogram is designed to provide actual industrial experienceinterspersed with academic study on an alternating semesterbasis. The student would complete the freshman year indi-cated above and then transfer.
