Fluid Power Application of a Regenerative Turbine Pump

The common approach to equipping engine and transmissions with lube and fluid power supplies employs design and development of positive displacement pumps, most often gear pumps. These pumps typically require considerable development effort to reduce noise, cost and ease of assembly. This project explores an alternative machine which, by design, offers the potential to eliminate noise issues, simplify assembly and reduce part count, thereby reducing cost.

Project Summary Fluid Power Application of a Regenerative Turbine Pump

BACKGROUND

Typical low pressure auxiliary fluid power pumps used in the automotive industry are based on conventional positive displacement machinery, i.e. fixed displacement gear type rotors. These designs have found favor in cost and durability sensitive applications, but have developed a reputation for objectionable audible noise. There is experience in unrelated fluid systems, most notably fuel supply systems, where hydrodynamic pumps have been used with success. This project will investigate the suitability of such machines in lower pressure fluid power applications.

An intellectual property agreement is required. An NDA to protect American Hydromech (AHM) proprietary information is required. Invention(s) and all Intellectual Property developed during this effort will be owned by American Hydromech. With sponsor prior approval, the student team has full rights of disclosure to the public during this project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The mission is to establish the suitability of a regenerative turbine pump for use as a low pressure, low flow (less that 4 bar at 5 lpm) fluid power supply for automotive service. The mission objectives include:

• Establish the performance of an off-the-shelf commercial pump with features, size and performance ratings similar to the existing gear type auxiliary pump when operated under conditions expected in the target application.

• Establish the required size and package envelope for a properly designed regenerative pump for the target application.

• Probe for system operating extremes to build confidence this type of pump is robust vis-a-vis the applicable “5 Noises”, i.e. Customer Usage, Degradation Over Time, Environment, Manufacturing Variability and System Interactions.

• Apply Quality tools to guide future effort , i.e. Parameter Diagram, Boundary Diagram, Interface matrix

• Execute a “VA/VE Express” study.

Project Summary A servo valve is primarily employed as a flow control device in a hydraulic system that is typically comprised of an actuator (cylinder or motor), a hydraulic power unit, a feedback measurement system, an electrical control unit and a control valve (servo or proportional). In certain applications, precise positional accuracy of a hydraulic cylinder is essential to the performance of the system for which Eaton servo valves combined with closed loop control can provide infinite cylinder position control within 0.001” or better depending on the components selected, length of stroke and load characteristics. When applied with servo hydraulic motors using tachometer feedback and appropriate electronics, Eaton servo valves provide infinite proportional flow control for real-time velocity/acceleration profiles. The resulting closed loop system can be error corrected to within one-tenth of a revolution per minute.

Integral part of a two-stage servo valve is the torque motor also called the pilot stage or “brain” of the valve. There are many components in a torque motor of which two: the armature and the pole piece provide the electromagnetic connection between the applied input (current) and the resulting output (flow) through the flapper/nozzle coupled to a spool/sleeve assembly. It has been observed that magnetization characteristics (such as forcing, flux, coercivity, permeability) of these components play an important role in the valve performance.

• The students are expected to develop the relationship between the optimum “magnetic charge” against the mentioned magnetic characteristics for different magnetic materials.

• The students are also expected to recommend material type with extremely high permeability at low magnetizing forces due to weak current to increase the efficiency for this application. A comparative study for various types is deemed useful.

The analytic study should be verified via experimental results.

The students are anticipated to submit a formal report of their findings that would include analytical relations surrounding magnetic properties that affect the servo valve performance and/or simulation/experiments to validate their claims. The students will get an opportunity for a “hands-on” environment with a manufacturing industrial experience which may prove valuable to their personal and professional goals. Eaton is looking forward to an exciting and eventful fall season.

Mobile Device with a Pico Projector

The development of projects aligns with Motorola’s ambition to develop compelling mobile devices that allow consumers to be more productive. The goal of these projects will be to create a new paradigm for a mobile phone experience.

Project DG06

Page 12: Department of Mechanical Engineering Application for Sponsorship … Docs... · Department of Mechanical Engineering Application for Sponsorship of a Capstone Design Project Project

Mobile Device with a Pico Projector

Background: Funcationality and productivity of mobile devices are limited by the size of their displays. Currnet displays define product designs, sizes and reliability. New projector technologies are emerging that allows them to be small enough to be integrated in to mobile devices. Developing a new type of product design that can be made from this emerging technology is the focus of this design project.

Pico Projector Examples:

New Design: What Motorola is looking for out of this design project is a new, unique and different mobile device that uniquely utilizes the concept of a pico projector. We want the students to look at the existing problems they have with mobile phones and how a pico projector could help them solve these issues. In addition to a deep dive into pico projectors the team for this project will likely cover and learn about topics such as critical stack ups & tolerance analysis, design trade-offs, detailed part design & manufacturing processes, vendor engagement and mechanical analysis.

Expected Deliverables: At the end of this project we would like to this concept roughly developed. The main deliverables are:

1)3D CAD model 2)Prototype Mock up 3)Design Justification 4)Detailed Analysis 5)Detailed BOM

LED Panel optimization & attachment on an appliance

Basic LED panel illumination systems face problems related to light distribution. The LEDs are so punctual light sources that hot spots can be seen where they are located. In some cases the unevenness of the light distribution is too big and therefore affects the aesthetical appeal of the user interface located on an appliance. The solutions provided by the students on this project will help provide higher quality on a given appliance having LED user interfaces. This will help improve customer perception on overall aesthetics and quality on our appliances sold globally. This project would provide a unique opportunity for the students to work with one of our team members based in Brazil , and give them a true taste of working in a global environment.

LED Panel Optimization & attachment on an appliance.

I I . What problem is to be solved?

Basic LED panel illumination systems face problems related to light distribution. The

LEDs are so punctual light sources that hot spots can be seen where they are located. In some

cases the unevenness of the light distribution is too big and therefore affects the aesthetical

appeal.

There is a strong need for LED Panel Illumination since its aesthetical effect on the

appliance internal look is great. However if the panel light distribution is not even, the customer

will notice the unevenness on the panel and part of the aesthetical appeal will be compromised.

Figure 1 presents an example of an ideal LED panel and also the problem just described.

The attachment of the LED panel module inside an appliance is also critical. The LED

panel volume should be adequate in such way the final attachment is flush to the internal wall.

Non-Plumbed manual pump water system for an appliance

Many regions of the world do not have their kitchenʼs setup to have a water connection for an appliance. One of the biggest customer needs is to have features on appliances that use an inlet water connection. Even though many of our appliances maybe equipped with these features, they would render useless without being plumbed to a water supply. The solutions developed by the students would provide Whirlpool & its customers with a new cost effective solution that could help customers in regions like Asia, Brazil & Europe to buy appliances without having to plumb their unit and still have the option of using the feature described above

Non-Plumbed manual pump water system for an appliance.

I I . What problem is to be solved?

Many regions of the world do not have a water connection available for an appliance. If

the appliance is equipped with a water dependent feature, this renders these features essentially

useless. This problem has been solved by some appliance manufacturers by incorporating water

reservoirs which are filled by the user manually and the water is delivered to the water based

feature by way of an electrically powered pump and electro-valve system. Although these

solutions work very well, there are many regions in the world that cannot afford the cost of this

approach.

Whirlpool would like to solve this problem in a more cost effective manner by employing

the use of manual pumps and pressure vessels to take the place of the electrical based solution.

Similar technologies presently exist in devices such as weed sprayers, and bicycle pumps.

The students need to come up with new, low cost innovative solutions to solve this

problem.
