Sensorial Encounters: Body, Object, and Environment 2016 KU History of Art Graduate Student Symposium

October 14-15, 2016 Kress Foundation Department of Art History, University of Kansas, Lawrence Keynote Speaker: Dr. Bissera Pentcheva, Associate Professor, Department of Art & Art History, Stanford University The multi-sensory nature of experience has been the focus of much recent art historical scholarship. Many of these writings have drawn on the important critical and philosophical work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Gilles Deleuze, Didier Anzieu, and Luce Irigaray. Participants in this symposium will explore some of the ways in which the senses, broadly conceived, generate and/or mediate aesthetic encounters. We invite proposals for 20-minute papers that consider how interactions between and/or among bodies, objects, and environments, whether real or virtual, make meaning. We welcome proposals from graduate students at the M.A. or Ph.D. level that address topics from a wide range of time periods and geographic locations. We invite object-based and theoretical approaches. Possible topics include but are not limited to the following: • Embodiment and perception • Intertwining • Five senses and beyond • Artistic process • Sensations • Performance, ceremonies, and rituals • Materiality

• Objects meant to be touched, handled, and/or carried • Writing, action, and gesture • Environments • Spectatorship and participation • Trauma • Skin-ego and the sound envelope

Please submit an abstract (250 – 300 words) and C.V. to [email protected] by April 1, 2016

We will notify successful applicants by May 2, 2016. _______________________________________

CLEOPATRA: An Archaeological Perspective on Egypt’s Last Pharaoh Dr. John Hale, University of Louisville

Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11am Pillsbury Auditorium at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Cleopatra, last pharaoh of Egypt, may be the most famous female ruler in all of history. But her Roman enemies made her notorious for all the wrong reasons: her political ambitions, her sumptuous lifestyle, and above all her love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Yet if we look past the long-standing stereotypes of popular culture, from Plutarch and Shakespeare to Elizabeth Taylor and Hollywood, the archaeological evidence paints a very different picture. In this illustrated lecture, we will tour the Egypt that Cleopatra inherited from her Ptolemaic ancestors, view her self-chosen portraits on coins and temple walls, and take in her extraordinary achievements as goddess, priestess, queen, civil administrator, scholar, lover, and above all, mother. Our journey will follow Cleopatra from the Nile to the Tiber, and from desert shrines to the streets and palaces of her capital at Alexandria, now sunken beneath the waters of Alexandria harbor. Archaeological discoveries create a truer picture of Cleopatra than the many literary and dramatic fantasies that have distorted the memory of this great leader. John R. Hale is the director of Liberal Studies for the College of Arts and Sciences and adjunct professor of archaeology at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He earned his B.A. at Yale University and his Ph.D. at Cambridge University. Hale teaches introductory courses on archaeology, as well as more specialized courses on the Bronze Age, the ancient Greeks, the Roman world, Celtic cultures, Vikings, and on nautical and underwater archaeology. He has received many awards for distinguished teaching, including the Panhellenic Teacher of the Year Award and the Delphi Center Award. He has been published in the journal Antiquity, The Classical Bulletin, The Journal of Roman Archaeology, and Scientific American, and is also the author of Lords of the Sea (2009), a volume about the ancient Athenian navy. Hale has more than 30 years of fieldwork experience, including at the Romano-British site of Dragonby in Lincolnshire, and at the Roman Villa of Torre de Palma, Portugal. He has also carried out interdisciplinary studies of ancient oracle sites in Greece and Turkey, including the famous Delphic Oracle, and participated in an undersea search in Greek waters for lost fleets from the time of the Persian Wars. He was an AIA Norton Lecturer for 2009/2010.

Olexa Bulavitsky: Immigrant Experiences and Ukrainian-American Art

January 30, 2016 – July 3, 2016 The Museum of Russian Art, Lower Gallery The exhibition unfolds the story of an immigrant artist, Olexa Bulavitsky, from his early years of professional training in Kiev, Odessa, and Leningrad to the difficult times of WWII, life in a Displaced Persons (DP) camp, immigration to the US, and a successful professional career in Minneapolis, MN. The display will include more than 40 paintings. Born in 1916 in the Ukrainian town of Uman, Olexa Bulavitsky spent his early years in Ukraine, where he received his art training in Odessa and Kiev. He perfected his skills at the prestigious USSR Academy of Arts in Leningrad, returning to Ukraine to work as a set designer for Kiev theaters and film studios. Drafted into the Soviet Army at the outbreak of WWII, he was captured by the Germans, then escaped and wandered through the Carpathian region into Slovakia, finding himself married and in a Displaced Persons camp (Berchtesgaden, Bavaria) by the end of the war. He immigrated to the US in 1950 and settled in Schooner “Conrad,” 1960s. Oil on canvas. Minneapolis where he painted, taught, and exhibited until the end of his life. His paintings include still lives, landscapes, and portraits in realist style. In the 1950s, during his travels in Canada, the artist was brought to an old village of Sirko, built by Ukrainian immigrants as early as the 19th century. He was immediately taken by the old world charm of village dwellings, wooden gates, and churches. He often visited this and other Ukrainian settlements, where he enjoyed painting old houses of Ukrainian settlers. Reconnecting to his Ukrainian heritage, he wanted to explore the “theme of immigration” as he put it, in his art. The exhibition will include some of the paintings he brought from his travels to Canada. The works on display are drawn from the artist’s family collection as well as local private collections. The display will also include archival materials shedding light on the life and work of Olexa Bulavitsky.
