ABOUT DENVER ROLLER DERBYDenver Roller Derby (DRD) was formed by 20 skaters in December of 2005. Originally called the Denver Roller Dolls, these women helped pioneer the modern roller derby revival in the early 2000’s. The sport of roller derby began in the 1930’s and grew increasingly theatric and scripted as it was televised in the late 1950’s and 1960’s. The modern iteration of the game that we play today is all real - every bump and jump is the result of hours of intensive, athletic training.

Like most leagues, DRD began as an all female league, focused on developing a fierce, competitive women’s sport. As roller derby grew nationally, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) was formed in 2004 as a governing body to oversee competition between leagues and develop a comprehensive, uniform rules set. Every year WFTDA hosts the championship tournament, which features the top twelve teams in the world. DRD’s all-star team “The Mile High Club” has consistently been ranked among the top ten teams, placing 3rd in 2009 and 2012, and 4th in 2013. Denver Roller Derby is truly an elite competitor.

As the resurgence of roller derby has grown, our league has grown right along with it. DRD boasts four intraleague home teams and three competitive interleague teams. A few years back, we introduced the girls and boys of Colorado to roller derby with our junior program, Major Turbulence (formerly the Glitterdome Gladiators). In 2014, we welcomed our affiliate men’s program, Ground Control, to share the Glitterdome with us as a joint home.

In celebration of our tenth year of roller derby, and to recognize the advances of the sport and the increasingly diverse composition of the

league, we changed our name from Denver Roller Dolls to Denver Roller Derby. We’re still DRD, but we’ve got a new name, a new logo, and a

renovated home. We remain 100% skater owned and operated; we spend as much time running this business as we do training and

competing.

From the beginning, we’ve been dedicated to developing and promoting the sport of roller derby, training skaters for local,

national, international and inter-league competition, and strengthening the communities in which we live. We look

forward to another ten years of empowering athletes and pushing the envelope of what roller derby can be.

LEAGUE COMPOSITIONHome Teams Home teams are the backbone of every roller derby league. Skaters who’ve passed standardized rules and on-skates skills tests are eligible to be drafted onto one of four home teams: the BAD APPLES, the GREEN BARRETTES, the ORANGE CRUSHERS and the SHOTGUN BETTIES. Our home teams primarily play each other throughout the home team season, though they will occasionally square off with home teams from nearby leagues. Ultimate bragging rights go to the annual league champs, crowned in August.

Travel Teams Skaters who show dedication, talent and drive to compete at a higher level may be drafted onto one of three travel teams. The MILE HIGH CLUB is our All-Star squad, and represents DRD as our WFTDA Charter team and the league’s representative in WFTDA-sanctioned games and tournaments. BRUISING ALTITUDE is our “B” Team, who’ve made a name for themselves as one of the top non-charter squads in the country. THE STANDBYS is our “C” level travel team, formed to give more skaters the opportunity to gain interleague experience.

Junior Roller DerbyMAJOR TURBULENCE is DRD’s junior roller derby team

and member of the Junior Roller Derby Association. Girls and boys from 6 to 17 years old compete on

teams split up by age and skill level. Formerly the Glitterdome Gladiators, our Juniors are the tough,

skilled next generation of skaters in our sport.

Mens Roller Derby GROUND CONTROL was formed in 2014

and has taken the Mens Roller Derby

Association by storm! We’re proud to be

It’s Time To Earn Your Wings.Denver Roller Derby’s unique recruitment program, Flight School, allows skaters of all levels a chance to learn in a safe, supportive environment.

Flight School focuses on basic skating technique, roller derby specific skills, and rules knowledge. Cadets are coached by experienced trainers, mentored by skaters in the league, and attend scrimmages where they’re trained by our amazing team of Officials in practical, hands-on rules seminars. Even if you’ve never skated before, we invite you to come join us. We’ll teach you everything you need to know to get rolling!
