2010 Annual Report

Going the distance to make a difference.

Oregon’s dirty little secret.

On any given day more than 5,000 Oregon children are

suffering from dental pain or infection affecting their

ability to learn, eat and stay healthy.

Nearly 44,000 children need treatment for tooth decay,

and 9% of our first graders have never been to the

dentist.

Less than 35% of our children enrolled in Medicaid

receive any care at all, and fewer than 25% of

Oregonians have community water fluoridation

compared with nearly 75% of people nationwide.

If dental disease is 100% preventable,

why is this happening in Oregon?

Our mission: Improving oral health for Oregon’s children.

How we help.

The Dental Foundation of Oregon (DFO) is the charitable arm of the Oregon Dental Association, and we work to improve the oral health of uninsured and underserved children in Oregon.

We help eliminate the economic, geographic and cultural barriers to care by delivering free care and oral health education on our mobile dental clinic, affectionately called the Tooth Taxi.

We support non-profit dental programs statewide that are critical health care safety nets in many communities, and we promote the importance of oral hygiene, community water fluoridation, and access to dental care for all children.

In 2010, the need for dental services was tremendous. The Tooth Taxi visited every corner of the state providing free care and oral health education to thousands of underserved children. You can read about the Tooth Taxi and our volunteers in this report. We also feature a few of the nonprofit dental programs we supported during the year that are doing outstanding work in their communities.

We are able to advocate for children’s oral health, “fuel” the Tooth Taxi and help nonprofit dental clinics because of the generosity of many donors and volunteers. We thank them for their support, and we are pleased to acknowledge them in this report.

Reaching far and wide.

The Tooth Taxi was very busy in 2010 making 48 school/site visits in communities all over the state. Thanks to our unique partnership with OeA choice Trust and ODS, the mobile dental clinic is making a real difference for children.

Our full-time dentist and staff spend up to a week at each school providing comprehensive and preventive care and oral health education on the van and in the classroom.

Often front page news in local newspapers, the Tooth Taxi is helping to raise awareness of the oral health challenge in Oregon. In fact, reporters and even legislators have told us, “I had no idea that Oregon children suffered such high rates of dental disease.”

Along with increasing awareness of the problem, the Tooth Taxi is a critical component of the broader solution helping to reach children who do not have access to care. We serve thousands of children with immediate needs, and provide many more children with oral health education that gives them the knowledge they need to maintain good oral health for life.

Lakeview

Lakeview, the “Tallest town in Oregon,” sits at an

elevation of 4,800 feet in rural southeastern Oregon.

Volunteer Dr. Mike Goger and the Tooth Taxi team

visited Fremont and Hay elementary schools and

screened 71 children, delivered in-classroom oral health

education to 282 students, treated 42 children on the

van and delivered $24,211 in donated dental services.

Nyssa is on the Snake River

in northeastern Oregon

near the Idaho border. One

first grader reported, “My

cousin only has three teeth

left ’cause she drinks a lot of

soda pop.”

Dr. Robert “Tosh” Rudell—

who served as the Tooth Taxi dentist for

several months in 2010—and the team

screened 154 children, delivered in-classroom

oral health education to 392 students, treated

13 students on the van and delivered $18,600

in donated dental care.

(MOM) project was held during

Thanksgiving week at the

Oregon convention center in

Portland, serving an astounding

1,554 patients in two days

and delivering $829,119 in

donated dental care. The Tooth

Taxi helped anchor the Pediatric Dental Area at MOM. Many thanks to the

Oregon Dental Association for taking the lead on this event, and to the over

1,244 volunteers who reminded us all of the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

Jr., upon his retirement

from the Tooth Taxi in

2010. Dr. Heringer was

instrumental in creating and launching the van and

served as its first full-time dentist. He developed many of

the program processes including the in-classroom oral

health education program and the fluoride treatment

card. Often working 14 hour days, Dr. Heringer not

only served as the Tooth Taxi pediatric dentist on the

van, he regularly drove the van and helped keep it

in tip-top running order. Thank you Dr. Heringer for

your outstanding work on the Tooth Taxi and for your

commitment to underserved children in Oregon.

children’s Dental clinic of Jackson county

For over 50 years the children’s Dental

clinic has been providing free dental care

to low-income,

uninsured children

living in Jackson

county. Last year, the

clinic was relocated

to a new facility.

Thanks to generous

donations and grants

from numerous

organizations such

as the Dental Foundation of Oregon, the

children’s Dental clinic was able to remodel

the new space, and

equip two additional

treatment rooms.

During 2010 the

clinic provided

$353,446 worth of

donated dental

care to 364 children.

Since 1982, the Foundation has provided over

one million dollars to support nonprofit dental

programs and safety net clinics in Oregon.

The Friends of creston children’s Dental clinic

After nearly 50 years of service, the creston

Dental clinic lost all of its financial support almost

overnight, and was faced with closure. A group

of smart, dedicated dentists and community

members came together to reorganize the clinic

and created a new nonprofit called The Friends

of creston children’s Dental clinic. A grant of

$10,000 from the DFO helped the

group as it sought early stabilization

funding. “We are so grateful to the DFO

for its support that has helped creston to remain open,”

said Lora Mattson, executive Director of the Multnomah

Dental Society and a board member of the creston

clinic. “The DFO grant was crucial in helping us pursue

our dream and keeping it alive. In just five months,

the clinic has already served over 802 students and delivered

$219,750 in donated dental care.

Recognizing Dr. George “Jim” Darke

The DFO Board of Directors wishes to thank

Dr. Darke upon his retirement from the board

after 23 years of extraordinary service.

Jim has been instrumental in helping to grow

the foundation and bring its message to a

broader audience. A past president of the Oregon

Dental Association, and a true leader in organized dentistry, Jim

helped establish the DFO’s planned giving program—the cornerstone

Society—and he helped build the DFO into the organization it is today
