Dear Friends,

One of the most exciting aspects of my post-bariatric journey was the moment I realized that I could finally WEAR what was coming down the runway. Now, I don’t have to wait several seasons to see if those trends will meet the light of day in the limited and sometimes stifling women’s plus-size apparel market. Fashion may seem frivolous at first, but it is a tool that allows us to express ourselves!

At this moment, many of us may well be undergoing a process in which we are learning how we can express the beautiful, unique beings that we are! Some of us have never in our adult lives truly given ourselves the opportunity to ponder this due to limited availability of stylish plus-size clothing and the slow wait for trends to hit the plus-size stores and departments.

Those of us on our post-bariatric journeys face unique fashion challenges from how to wear and adapt trends to fit our post-bari body shapes, to how to afford to stay trendy while we shed sizes, and therefore clothing, at a relatively rapid pace.

Help has arrived!

Hi, I’m Tiffany Hodges, and I have partnered with my aunt, Denise London, to create our first trend report with your unique needs in mind. I come to you with fantastic experience I gained at Lord and Taylor, QVC and Destination Maternity, not to mention a Master of Science Degree in Fashion Apparel Studies. I want to share my knowledge and creativity with you.

My aunt has consulted with me on many occasions to help with her journey to discover her new sense of style. She has called me and sent iPhone photos to me from shoe stores, malls, thrift shops, etc. I’m exhausted! Just kidding. I love it and look forward to your enjoyment of this and future reports.

I scoured the Spring/Summer 2017 Fashion Week images to help those of you embracing your new selves after weight loss surgery to get an idea of how you can stay on-trend while:

1) Expressing yourself beyond the limited fashion apparel choices you had in the past,

2) Truly flattering the post-bari body with its specific challenges and

3) Without breaking your pocketbooks and wallets.

Aunty and I have included several tips and tricks that we believe you will find useful, because we want you to feel prepared and relaxed as you go through this process. Please note that all fashion images are courtesy of Vogue.com.

Sincerely yours,

Denise and Tiffany

Jackpot! Vertical stripes are huge this season. They allow us to see the beauty of contrast. Look for stripes not only in the form of color contrast, but through sheer vs. opaque in one single color. You will find this style in everything from tops, to jackets, to dresses and handbags, and as you can see, the proportions of the stripes will vary widely this season—from big thick stripes to pinstripes. This trend is just as pervasive in Men’s fashion this season!

Why this trend works for post-bari bodies: Simply put- we lucked up this season. Wearing vertical stripes can help us appear taller and thinner compared to horizontal stripes, which draw the eye across the body.

Tips & Tricks: When we are losing weight initially after surgery, it can be difficult to afford a new wardrobe for every size we drop. So by using inexpensive accessories, we can change up our look without breaking the bank. Because this trend is appearing not only in apparel, but in accessories (which tend to be less expensive) as well, this is a very budget-friendly style for anyone who has recently undergone weight-loss surgery or planning to have it soon.

Show some skin! Every fashion week season I look for which body parts are being highlighted or accentuated, and this season, it is the shoulder. Specifically, designers are showing the skin of the shoulder using cut outs.

Why this trend works for post-bari bodies: Exposing a little flesh allows us to feel sexy and our shoulders are less likely to collect hanging skin than some other areas on our bodies.

Tips & Tricks: Notice that all the images I used to show the cut-out shoulder trend have sleeves. This is because after bariatric surgery, the skin on our upper arm areas can tend to droop. In the event that this sagging skin on the arms bothers you, stick to exposing the shoulders only, or instead pick styles that emphasize them.

This is a fun one! Another way the shoulder is being emphasized is by using silhouettes that accentuate or exaggerate the shoulders. From pointy to rounded, boxy to asymmetrical, this trend challenges us to stand tall and proud, shoulders high, of course!

Why this trend works for post-bari bodies: The way we carry our shoulders can help us exude and embody more confidence. This trend gives us an opportunity to play around with that and take inventory on how we feel with different shoulder shapes and sizes.

Tips & Tricks: Many of these styles are very attention grabbing. Some of us like that, but for some, it may feel like too much. If you want to experiment with shoulder emphasis without feeling like all eyes are on you, try a style where the shoulders are softer, or wear exaggerated shoulders in a jacket that you can take off if it starts to feel like too much.

Add a punch of pink! This is a color trend, and as such, doesn’t really require much explanation. As you can see, this color trend includes every pink from pale to hot.

Why this trend works: Focusing on a trendy color as opposed to the cut of the clothing helps us to stay on-trend while a l so a l lowing us the flexibility to find styles and silhouettes that suit our unique fashion needs!

Tips & Tricks: If you don’t particularly like the color pink, other colors to look out for this season include yellow and khaki (both the color and the fabric).
