May, Mothers, and Members-at-Large are Magnificent! This month we honor our many Members-at-Large. Thank you for your dedication to NWCA. You epitomize in so many ways our pledge of being kind and charitable with your continued support to NWCA and one another. We would not be the same without your smiles, talent and service. Drop me a line sometime and share whatever is on your mind. I would enjoy hearing about your latest adventures. And, to all our Mothers in NWCA – the world would truly not be the same without your tender care and teaching. Thank you for all you sacrifice each day.

Do you want to make new friends, continue long standing friendships, and learn something new? Convention is the place to be. I hope everyone has a terrific time at their regional conventions. Also, THANK YOU to the many hosts for each regional convention! I know what an adventure planning and hosting a convention can be for you, your club and family too. I am certain everyone has or will have a wonderful time thanks to your many hours of planning and gracious attitudes. Thank you for the memories.

Red Alert - Deadline is fast approaching to apply for all NWCA Scholarships for this year: May 30th; don’t let it pass you by! This office administers the Mary Paolozzi Members Scholarship, Judith Haupt Member’s Child Scholarship, and the Pauline Langkamp Memorial (Member’s Child) Scholarship. The applications are on the website for easy downloading or email me to request one. Only a

few applications have come in thus far, where is yours?

We are continuing the tradition of “ditty” bags for the wounded at Bethesda. I want to thank the clubs who have already contributed to the success of this charitable project. THANK YOU! It is not too late to send items or money if you want to help me continue this tradition. Also, we are visiting the Fisher Houses on Bethesda and will be taking them a meal and hopefully items from their wish list too. There is still time to send a donation for this project as well. I must receive all mailed donations by June 2nd in order to shop for the goodies before I head up for courtesy calls. Thank you again for your support.

I have invited Past National President Nancy L.M. Johnson to assist me in laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery on 17 June 2012 at 1:15pm. I am honored she has accepted and is flying out to Washington D.C. to participate. I hope you and your families can join us at Arlington to witness this solemn ceremonial wreath laying in honor of our heroes. Sunday best is the dress of the day. NMCCR Christel Anderson has been hard at work setting up courtesy call appointments for June with SECNAV, CNO, CNO Ombudsman at large, Sgt. Major USMC, USO, FRA, NMFA and many more still firming up. We want to represent you well; therefore, if you have concerns or praise you specifically wish shared during courtesy calls I welcome hearing from you directly. Please drop me a line by mail (4724 Crown Point Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23462), email ([email protected]) or on my cellular telephone (731-225-7655) when you have a moment between now and June 3rd.

In your service moment: Have you caught a member doing Acts of Service? Drop

It’s Scholarship season!! I am beginning to receive applications for the NMCCG Enlisted Spouse Scholarship, and am amazed at some of the fantastic things these applicants are accomplishing while pursuing their educational dreams. My hat is off to any spouse who can raise children, keep a full time job and continue their education, often while their spouse is deployed. Been there, done that! Remember, if you are going to college, you may be eligible for this scholarship too.

Last month I stated from Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised what was in the first paragraph. This month I will concentrate on minutes at the local club level.

In the opening paragraph I usually state who called the meeting to order (what kind of meeting: business, board, or special), where, and the time. Next, I put in that Opening Prayer was led by Chaplain (name). (Name) led us in The Pledge to the Flag, and the NWCA Pledge was led by (name).

The NWCA Connection, May 2012 Page

After the opening paragraph, our guests are introduced.

The Chair asks the Recording Secretary to call the roll. In our minutes, the names are listed in the minutes as an Addendum. The next sentence will tell how many members are present, majority, and 2/3’s.

President (name) asks the members if they received the minutes (Jax #86 minutes are mailed to the members). After that, the Chair will ask for any corrections. If no, then it is stated that the minutes were approved as mailed. Any corrections are to be stated in the minutes. In this instance, the Chair would then state that the minutes were approved as corrected.

I will close right here. Next month we will get into what I refer to as “The Body” of the minutes.

This month, please remember our men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.Be in prayer for those in harm’s way.

I am happy to say that I have already received a number of applications, but would like to receive many more. With spring here, children will soon be on summer vacation and not thinking about college applications and such. Now is the time to possibly get another press release out and call a school or two to make certain they have one of the Foundation’s applications or know where to go on line to get an application.

Have you got a friend, club member or neighbor who has a child that is eligible to receive a scholarship from the NWCA Foundation? If so, take a few minutes to urge him/her to go onto the website and download an application. Yes, it

takes a little time and effort. So many times one hears these words, “Oh, even if I fill out the application and send it in, I will never receive a scholarship.” One never knows until one tries. Let your friend, club member or neighbor know that you are there to assist. If you are unable to do so, Christina and I would be happy to assist. Here’s to the Foundation receiving many more applications.

Did you know that April was the “Month of the Military Child”?This special celebration is the legacy of former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, established to underscore the important role children play in the Armed Forces community.According to the Military Child Education Coalition, nearly 2 million children across the world are connected to the US Military. Military

children are a special breed. They’re faced with circumstances that civilian children may never face. Despite their challenges, experts say that military children are well rounded, culturally aware and tolerant, and extremely resilient. As a Navy B.R.A.T (Born, Raised and Transferred) I can fully attest to the above, and am thankful for the adults who volunteered to lead the activities I participated in at all our duty stations. Children need caring adults other than their parents in their lives in order to grow up as well adjusted individuals. We can all make a difference in the lives of the children in our communities through our volunteer efforts. Consider making a difference in the life of a child and then documenting your hours on the volunteer form and return quarterly.

The holidays and spring breaks are over, now as we are making our plans for our region and National Conventions, please remember the challenge that our National President put in April's connection. Some clubs have met the challenge so let's get busy with the other clubs. Maybe we can all get 3 new members by October. Until next month, enjoy your conventions, make new friends but keep the old.

The NWCA Connection, May 2012 Page

Business Etiquette - More Than Just Eating with the Right Fork!Business etiquette is made up of significantly more important things than knowing which fork to use at lunch with sister members, government officials, or at a formal event. Unfortunately, in the perception of others, the devil is in the details. People may feel that if you can’t be trusted not to embarrass yourself in business and social situations, you may lack the self-control necessary to be good at what you do. Etiquette is about presenting yourself that shows you can be taken seriously. Etiquette is also about being comfortable around people (and making them comfortable around you!)People are a key factor in any businesses or organizations success. Many potentially worthwhile associations and potential members have been lost because of an unintentional breach of manners and etiquette.SolutionMost behavior that is perceived as disrespectful, discourteous or abrasive is unintentional, and could have been avoided by practicing good manners or etiquette. We've always found that most negative experiences with someone were unintentional and easily repaired by keeping an open mind and maintaining open, honest communication (know who your audience is and speak their language). Basic knowledge and practice of etiquette is a valuable advantage, because in a lot of situations, a second chance may not be possible or practical. There are many written and unwritten rules and guidelines for etiquette, and it certainly behooves a business person to learn them and apply practical application. The caveat is that there is no possible way to know all of them. These guidelines have some difficult-to-navigate nuances, depending on the company, the local culture, and the requirements of the situation. Possibilities to commit a faux pas are limitless, and chances are, sooner or later, you'll make a mistake. But you can minimize them, recover quickly, and avoid causing a bad impression by being generally considerate and attentive to the concerns of others and by adhering to the basic

rules of etiquette. When in doubt, stick to the basics. The BasicsThe most important thing to remember is to be courteous and thoughtful to the people around you, regardless of the situation. Consider other people's feelings, stick to your convictions as diplomatically as possible and keep yourself open to other people's opinions. Remember not everyone will agree with your opinion and that is alright. Address conflict as situation-related, rather than person-related "business is business, it's no personal". Apologize when you step on toes. You can't go too far wrong if you stick with the basics you learned in Kindergarten. (Not that those basics are easy to remember when you're in a hard-nosed business meeting!)This sounds simplistic, but the qualities we admire most when we see them in people in leadership positions, those are the very traits we work so hard to engender in our children. If you always behave so that you would not mind your spouse, kids, or grandparents watching you, you’re probably doing fine. Avoid raising your voice (surprisingly, it can be much more effective at getting attention when lower it!) using harsh or derogatory language toward anyone (present or absent), or interrupting. You may not get as much “airtime” in meetings at first, but what you do say will be much more effective because it carries the weight of credibility and respectability.Dress and AppearanceIt can be insulting to your coworkers, clients and sister members to show lack of concern about your appearance.Being wrinkled, smelly or unkempt communicates (intentionally or not) that you don't care enough about the situation, the people or the organization to present yourself respectably. If in doubt, always err on the side of conservative "women's clothing is a bit more complicated". If you think jeans may be OK for a social event (not meetings) but aren't sure, show up in clean pants/shorts, or dressy skirt and a nice shirt. If you think a situation may call for dress slacks/skirt, wear a dress shirt/blouse with

it. If you have any inkling that a suit may be called for, dress to the nines.Remember, your promise "I promise to conduct myself at all times in a manner which will bring credit to the organization and to be ever mindful of the dignity of the position which I hold".

Kerry Rickets [email protected]

Memorial Day goes way back after the Civil War. It was initially was known as Decoration Day at first. It was celebrated to honor the soldiers who died during the Civil War. Women would go out to their graves to decorate them with a Flag and flowers. As New York was the first state that started the Memorial Day, it was announced the birthplace of that holiday by President Johnson in 1966. General John A. Logan was for the first to witness the women laying the first flag & flower to the graves in May 1868. On the first recognized Memorial Day Holiday, a large ceremony was held at Arlington National Cemetery where they laid flowers on the headstones. Some southern states didn’t want to notice the day until after World War I. After World War I everyone started to honor all deceased soldiers from all wars not just Civil War soldiers alone anymore. In 1971, the National Holiday Act was signed by Congress, set aside a special day of commemoration where Memorial Day was declared a 3 day weekend for the Federal Holiday at the end of May. In 1988, on that last weekend in May a tradition started up by 2,500 motorcyclist ride in Washington D.C. for Memorial Day in a parade to honor the deceased soldiers, MIA’s, and POW’s. This tradition still rides on to the presence day with now a hundred thousands motorcyclist participating.

Happy May my fellow NWCA members! By now most of our district Conventions have come and gone and National is just 6 months away. I hope to see many of you in Mayport in October. Mothers Day and Memorial Day are both this month, have you thought of purchasing some NWCA jewelry for yourself or a special someone? The new Pin Order form went out in last month’s Connection, the new pricing is already in effect. Enclosed in this issue are the pictures of the actual pins that go along with the price list. There was so much information in the April connection that we did not have room for the pictures then. They can also be viewed on our website for those of you who have access to the internet. Please take a look at the new NWCA necklace we have available for purchase, it is being offered for 89.50 which includes an 18” chain and also includes engraving up to 7 letters.

I would appreciate your feedback on it. If there are other pins you would like to see offered, please let me know. This is your club and these are your pins, I am always open to suggestions.

What have YOU done to spread the word about NWCA? March was Membership Month, and in April our National President offered a challenge to all of us to increase our club size by 3 newmembers by August 31st, 2012. Maybe, as individuals, we need to think about why we joined. What intrigued YOU?

We also need to remember the quiet members in our organization. Find out how they would like to contribute, what are they thinking or suggesting? Maybe they can research items for you at home, do they quilt, crochet, sew? What can they bring to the organization? Find out. Sometimes, even visitors at your monthly meetings or socials have ideas. Listen to them, hear what they are saying. They could have some great suggestions that maybe you did not think of.

Most of you have completed your regional conventions by now, with the exception of the Eastern Region. Please post some of your pictures, your board officers, members, activities, etc., on our National Facebook page, or send them to me to upload. I would be more than happy to help spread the word.
