Unity Building, 913 Tracy Avenue VOL. II KANSAS CITY,. MO., THURSDAY, DEC. 8, 1910 No. 31 Denials Extracts from Mr. Fillmore’s Sunday morning talk in Unity Auditorium, De- cember 4, 1910. In the International Sunday school les- son for today we have the denial of Jesus by Peter just after the trial of Jesus. This suggests to us the place in our phil- osophy of that attitude of mind which is called “denial.” There is quite a differ- ence of opinion among metaphysicians as to whether specific denials are necessary, some saying that everything is included in the affirmation. It is well to analyze these opinions. When we all get into Spirit we will be of one mind on all these matters, because the Spirit reveals the T ruth. We get our very best lessons from the Scripture studies, provided we have the spiritual interpretation. The Scriptures are not like other books. They have an enduring life because of the spiritual quality given them by the writers, and are profitable for instruction in righteousness. In the denial of Jesus by Peter there is more than the mere historical account con- veys. It seems that on that fateful night all of the disciples denied him; they for- sook him and tied. All this took place in the mind of Jesus, and represents the action of every mind under certain con- ditions. In passing through the regenera- tion the I am gets separated, in a way, from the working mind. In generation, when men are living under the natural thought, the I am becomes entangled in its thoughts and their results and loses its power of discernment. In such a case the man should begin to affirm his spir- itual identity, his oneness with Christ. This will establish him in his Divine au- thority and he can enter in, see how the mind acts, and separate the truth from the error. He can tell how a certain proposition will work out in mind and follow the steps along which it works in consciousness. ' There are two very definite movements of mind in the entrance into consciousness of knowledge. First is perception. This is the intellect, John the Baptist preparing the way. Many get a perception of Truth and they say, “I accept this as true. I know it is true.” But a time of testing comes and they find they must go deeper. There must be a complete change of base. If their understanding is founded on what some man says or what they have read in a book, they must let go and lay hold for themselves. Jesus left no authority but the Spirit of Truth, therefore if you are building a belief on what the Bible or any other book says, you have awaiting you a great change, for every external thing as authority must be swept away and Christ Jesus, your indwelling Lord, be made the foundation. The Bible is a wonderful book, but all the inspiration in it came from the Spirit of Truth and you must get back to the Source. People sometimes say to me, “You are such a help and strength to me. I could not get along without your sustaining power.” I know right then the time will come when they will deny me. The great Law working in men for their redemption moves them steadily on, and they will all reach 'the place where they will stand alone in Spirit. They will let go of—that is, deny— all the helps along the way as these helps fulfill their mission. Have no regrets as these changes come, and do not condemn yourself. You are ready for the second step, which is the founding of your understanding in faith. Peter, the waver-

In the In te rn a tio n a l S unday school lesson fo r today we have the denial of Jesus by P e te r ju s t a f te r the tr ia l of Jesus. T h is suggests to us the place in our ph ilosophy of th a t attitude of m ind w hich is called “denial.” T here is quite a difference of opinion am ong m etaphysicians as to w hether specific denials are necessary, some say ing th a t everything is included in the affirmation. I t is well to analyze these opinions. W hen we a ll get into S p irit we w ill be of one m ind on a ll these m atte rs, because the S p irit reveals the T ruth.

W e get our very best lessons from the S crip tu re studies, provided we have the sp iritu a l in te rp re ta tion . T he S crip tures are not like other books. T hey have an enduring life because of the sp iritua l quality given them by the w riters, and are profitable for instruction in righteousness.

In the denial of Jesus by P e te r there is m ore th a n the m ere h isto rical account conveys. I t seems th a t on th a t fa te fu l n igh t a ll of the disciples denied h im ; they fo rsook him and tied. A ll th is took place in th e m ind of Jesu s, and rep resen ts the action of every m ind under certa in conditions. In passing th rough the regeneration the I a m gets separated , in a w ay, from the w orking mind. In generation , when men are living under the natu ra l thought, the I a m becomes en tangled in its thoughts and the ir resu lts and loses its pow er of discernm ent. In such a case the m an should begin to affirm his sp iritua l iden tity , his oneness w ith C hrist. T h is will establish him in his D ivine au tho rity and he can en ter in , see how the

m ind acts, and separa te the tru th from the e rro r. H e can te ll how a certain proposition w ill w ork out in mind and follow the steps along which it works in consciousness.' T here a re two very definite movements

of m ind in the en trance into consciousness of knowledge. F irs t is perception. This is the intellect, Jo h n the B ap tis t p reparing the way. M any get a perception of T ru th and they say, “ I accept th is as true. I know it is tru e .” B ut a tim e of testing comes and they find they m ust go deeper. T here m ust be a com plete change of base. I f the ir understand ing is founded on w hat some m an says or w hat they have read in a book, they m ust le t go and lay hold for them selves. Jesu s le ft no au thority but the S p irit of T ru th , therefore if you are build ing a belief on w hat the Bible or any other book says, you have aw aiting you a g rea t change, fo r every ex ternal th ing as au tho rity m ust be sw ept aw ay and C hrist Jesu s, your indw elling L ord , be m ade the foundation. T he B ible is a w onderful book, bu t a ll the insp ira tion in it came from th e S p irit of T ru th and you must get back to the Source.

P eople sometimes say to me, “ You are such a help and streng th to me. I could not get along w ithout your sustaining pow er.” I know rig h t then the time will come when they w ill deny me. T he great Law w orking in men for the ir redem ption moves them steadily on, and they will all reach 'the place w here they will stand alone in S p irit. T hey will le t go of— that is, deny— all the helps along the way as these helps fulfill th e ir mission. H ave no reg re ts as these changes come, and do not condemn yourself. You are ready for the second step , which is the founding of your understand ing in faith . P e te r, the waver-

ing, denying one, is in rea lity fa ith , a rock. U nderstanding , when it is m erely of the in tellect, is sub jec t to all the winds and waves of m orta l though t; but when it goes down into consciousness and lays hold of Substance, “ the gates of hell shall not prevail against it .”

A denial is a relinquishm ent, and it should not be m ade w ith too much vehemence. Poise yourself in D ivine M ind and your affirmations and denials w ill be made in righ t relation. You will know ju s t when to le t go w ith th e m ind and when to lay hold. I t is not necessary to weep b itte rly over your denials. T he new day, the new perception , is ju s t before you. T he disciples had bu ilt g rea t hopes on the w ork they believed Jesus came to do, and when his w ork seemed about to end in a sudden trag ic w ay they were all pan ic-stricken ; they did not understand the situation. B ut when the resurrection of the ir L ord came they were filled w ith new jo y and zeal and courage. So it is in the experience of all who have entered the regeneration : A deep, far-reach ing denial is sometimes m ade w ith bitterness and w eeping, bu t when they find them selves raised to a h igher sp iritua l consciousness, jo y follows.

Guild HappeningsS everal th ings came to pass at the

U n ity G uild m eeting la st Tuesday evening.

One of them came about in th is w ay: A fter the trea su re r had reported a balance on hand of $95.71, a member rose and said th a t the W om an’s A uxiliary had not only pledged $50 to the U nity B uilding Fund , but they had a lready paid the am ount into the trea su ry , to help pay off the obligation against the U nity Building. “ Now, can the U nity G uild be outdone by the W om an’s A uxiliary in m aking demonstrations ?” T he answ er came from all presen t, “ N o.”

A motion was then made th a t the treasu re r be instruc ted to pay $100 to the U nity B uild ing F und at once. T he motion was carried , am id much enthusiasm . T here being but $95.74 in the treasu ry , it was necessary th a t som ething be done. So, the “ law of increase” was set into activ ity , and soon the trea su re r began to receive. T he “ shower of p len ty ” was

WEEKLY UNITYcounted and was found to be, in term s of the world, $9.76. Here; was enough to make up the deficiency and leave a nice little nest egg for a second $100.

A fter the regu lar o rder of business, a quarte r of an hour was spen t in a healing meeting. A strong healing atm osphere was established, into w hich nam es w ere spoken. Follow ing the recess a short p ro gram was given, th e fea tu re of which was a ta lk by C harles F illm ore. M r. F illm ore began by te lling the young folks th a t th is was his first opportun ity to scold them , but he decided instead to spend his tim e in p raise and com m endation, mixed w ith good, p rac tica l advice.
