What is dengue?
� Dengue is a viral disease
transmitted by a mosquito called
Aedes eagypti & Aedesalbopictus
� it is common during rainy season.

What are the characteristics of a Dengue
mosquito? small, black & white insects
� w/ stripes on its legs, body & back , thus called the ´Tigerµ mosquito;
measures about 5mm in size
feeding
� female takes blood meal
� male feeds on plant juices &nectars
generally day biters
� bites all day long but prefers tobite 1-2 hours after sunrise &before sunset.

W hat are the characteristics of a
Dengue mosquito? ² Life Cycle � can fly from 50 ² 300m to look for
blood meal or breeding site
� 1 female lays about 60 ² 100 eggsper batch & lays about 3 ² 4batches of eggs in its lifetime
� prefers dark color for oviposition;breeds in artificial or naturalcontainers; lays only in cleanstagnant water
� Ae. aegypti prefers to rest cool
shaded places, dark corners, closets& drawers; Ae. albopictus ² restsoutdoor, among shrubs & trees.
� female Aedes mosquito feeds every 2 ² 3 days & it can survive up 30days.

How can Dengue be prevented?
� eliminate mosquito breeding sites(source reduction)
� cover all water containers toavoid entry of mosquitoes
� change water of flower vases
& scrub side of containers 1x aweek
� dispose of garbage properly &remove rubbish aroundpremises that can collect rainwater
� inspect & clean roof gutters
� stockpiling of discarded tiresunder the shade & place acover on top.

How can Dengue be prevented?
� prevent mosquito bites
� install screens on windows & doors
� use protective clothing or repellents
� use mosquito nets for infants or adults while sleeping
at daytime� isolate the person sick w/ Dengue in a screened room
or by using a mosquito net.

W hat must the community leaders do to prevent Dengue?
�Organize a functional Dengue Team in the
barangays ex. Dengue Task Force, Dengue Brigade,
Dengue Watch Team in all barangays
�Implement anti-dengue activities ex. 4 O·clock
Habit, Operation Linis Kontra Kiti-kiti, Healthy Places
�Conduct health education campaigns
�Conduct inspection of the premises to eliminate
mosquito breeding sites
�Create & enforce ordinances to establish & maintaina ´dengue-freeµ community.

Basic Information : Key Messages
� Dengue is a dangerous disease; it can affect anyone but itis preventable.
� There is no drug or vaccine for Dengue. Once infected, thekey to survival is early diagnosis & prompt management of cases.
� Dengue suspects should be brought to the nearest healthfacility. Do not self-medicate.
� Dengue mosquitoes breed in the artificial & naturalcontainers found in our surroundings.
� Elimination of the breeding site is the cornerstone formosquito control.
� Personal protection is also necessary to prevent mosquitobites.
� The occurrence of Dengue can be prevented throughcollaborative efforts of various sectors of society includingthe community.
