Actively promote learning and development opportunities within the organisation.
Lead by example by personally reflecting and taking part in assessments to find out
more about yourself. Participate in a 360-degree feedback process, undertake one
or more personality psychometrics – e.g. OPQ (Occupational Personality
Questionnaire), MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator). These will give you a structured

insight into your preferences and give you the language to describe yourself and to
articulate your preferences to others.
Get periodic feedback from colleagues on your behaviour in situations of high
pressure or when you are up against obstacles.
Take a step back and look at the patterns of your workload – what problems/queries
keep arising, what are you working on that should be done by someone else, what
are you responding to too quickly, how are you spending the bulk of your time
(versus how you should be spending it)? Devise approaches, systems and
delegation behaviours that tackle these things. Be strategic, rather than tactical in
your approach to your workload.
Work with a coach to target personal development blockers e.g. empowering others,
delegating appropriately, how you balance the different elements of your role – this
can help in understanding when you need to get involved and when you need to step
back and let others manage. Visit the NHS Leadership Academy website to view the
National Quality Assured Coaching Register .
Make sure you are familiar with policies on equal opportunity and diversity. Attend
conferences/workshops and review NHS training literature/videos/case studies on
these topics.
Promote a culture consistent with the core values – encourage and support people to
express fears and doubts without blame or stigma; help colleagues who are in
difficulty; value your colleagues and their contribution; encourage people to learn
and improve and make sure you and your colleagues put the interests of patients
first. Reward and celebrate these behaviours.
Consider reading material on the area of developing resilience. This will help you
maintain commitment to your goals when you are challenged or when you meet
obstacles, mistakes or failings (see references).
