We Are Back On Campus! Philanthropy and Community Service This last year the chapter completed almost 350 hours of community service together. However, many of our brothers also take their own initiative to volunteer for community organizations--organizing coat drives, volunteer coaching, and working with children to name a few such projects. Traditionally, we hold one big philanthropy event each semester. This fall, we organized a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF which raised $1,000. This spring will be Derby Days--last spring we raised almost $2,000 in addition to having one of biggest community turnouts for a Greek event. We hope to improve on that mark this year. If you want to get involved or know when to look out for opportunities to help us give, check the dates below and/or contact us and we can let you know how to help. Brotherhood Our most recent brotherhood chair, Patrick Conroy, has organized and set up multiple events that have brought our chapter closer than it’s been in years. The living space in Doney has been extremely beneficial as we have movie nights, video game competitions, and much more. Brothers that own live outs, which are off-campus houses, are also great hosts. They have hosted UFC fights, BBQ’s, and other activities that bring our chapter closer as well improve interest from potential new members. During the spring term, we have hosted Sig n’ slides (slip n’ slide), milk n’ cookie nights, and are constantly outside throwing a football or frisbee around. We have high expectations for the spring of 2017 and have various events already planned. We have brothers on 6 different varsity sports, along with multiple club presidents and involved members of many organizations and studying a broad range of majors and minors. The wide range of temperaments, talents, and convictions has always been a focus for the Delta Zeta chapter and when it comes to brotherhood these differences bring everyone closer. The closeness of the Delta Zeta chapter has attracted a great deal of attention and will be beneficial for the future of recruitment. Brothers have also attended the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop and Horizons to further benefit the chapter. These workshops have taught invaluable lessons that will help the future of the chapter. We bring a great presence to the Willamette community and are respected highly by professors, faculty, and other students around campus. After two years of applications and meetings with the university, we were granted our own space on campus, the south wing of the now newly renovated Doney 1st. We currently have 15 brothers living in the space, but those who don’t live there spend plenty of time dropping by and enjoying the shared space. We are currently the only chapter on campus that still has an on-campus space, which has been extremely beneficial for the chapter in a myriad of ways. Though there are plans for expanded Greek housing on campus in the works, for the foreseeable future we are happy to be where we are on Doney 1st, and welcome any visits from anyone interested in dropping by! We Are Back On Campus!

Philanthropy and Community Service

This last year the chapter completed almost 350 hours of community service together.

Brotherhood Our most recent brotherhood

chair, Patrick Conroy, has organized and set up multiple events that have brought our chapter closer than it’s been in years.

Recruitment Recruitment is on the rise. The new Vice President of campus life, Dr. Ed Whipple, plans to revitalize Greek life on campus. Our recruitment has steadily been increasing in both aspects of quantity and quality. The living space in Doney 1st has been the perfect tool for meeting and getting to know new members, allowing us to host events such as open houses, movie nights, and football game screenings. Over the past year and a half we have hosted various events such as knockerball, the luau, and outdoor sports in the quad. These events have helped us strengthen our recruitment and relationships with others on campus, and helping improve the reputation of and relationships within our house. Post-recruitment pledges go through the new preparation for brotherhood process. Its an 8-week pledge process where they learn the material and get to know members of the chapter. This program is identical from chapter to chapter in every state and Canada. This past fall was the first time the program was implemented and the men that went through it loved every aspect of it. They were well educated and got to know the members very well before they were initiated. We look forward to the future of recruitment and continuing to improve the pledge process!

Consul Corner It has been a busy year for the Delta Zeta chapter of Sigma Chi! Between recruiting, social events, philanthropy, and participating in other chapters events we’ve managed to keep busy. In the Spring semester of 2016 we welcomed 15 new brothers, each one already contributing immensely to the fraternity. They were the first class to go through the new Pledge Program called P4B: Preparation for Brotherhood. There has been a learning curve, but it is proving to be successful! Derby Days was among the best in recent years! We had amazing participation from each of the other fraternities and sororities, in addition to increased participation from the rest of the student body! We raised close to $2,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Serenades were a huge hit again! Brother Reece Conney choreographed an outstanding dance for the group and had the crowd going wild! This Fall has been a great time as well! Brotherhood is better than ever, with weekly gatherings for brothers. We participated in Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash, taking 2nd overall! This was a huge boost from last year, where we took last. Brothers are involved in all sorts of activities, you will be hard pressed to walk around campus without seeing a Brother around. One of the most important allies we now have is the Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Ed Whipple. He returns from Bowling Green State to help re-establish a Greek presence on campus. We held a Fraternity summit to discuss problems and develop an action plan for the future. In addition to being the only fraternity to have on campus housing, we became the first fraternity in Willamette history to have required Conduct & Grade release forms to make sure we are only bringing in the absolute best. Overall, the brotherhood is strong. We are always striving towards the White Cross while keeping in mind the ideals of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. In Hoc Signo Vinces, Consul Antonio Antillon

What’s Next/Coming up. • Spring recruitment (Jan. 23rd-Feb. 3rd) • Derby Days (April 17th-21st) • Serenades • Province @ University of British Colombia • Graduation of 20 Brothers

Scholarship The chapter is continuing to bring its grades

back up from their previous levels. Currently, our chapter’s current cumulative GPA is 2.89. It is considered a slight improvement, with the last semester’s GPA being a collective 2.98. Many member’s GPAs have improved quite considerably, with some member’s GPA’s breaking 3.0.

The current scholarship chair, Tod Nakahira, is hosting a scholarship competition, awarding prizes to teams with the most improvement and the highest cumulative GPA. In past years, the scholarship competition has proven to be a highly successful approach for improving their grades.

While the competition provides a long-term incentive, a short-term incentive is provided through Treats-With-Tod, which rewards members with high scores on tests, projects, and papers with snacks and celebration in chapter meetings. Treats-With-Tod also serves to heighten a more academic culture within our chapter, allowing academic performance to be a more relevant point of discussion among members. It also gives the chapter a decent clue of who’s successful and who’s struggling.

Few members who have struggled immensely in the past are showing huge academic improvements this semester. Members are especially optimistic of Delta Zeta’s academic future, many thinking that we will finally break our 3.0 goal.

House Corp/Scholarship Update As you have read, Sigma Chi is the only

fraternity holding space on campus at the moment. The process to be granted your own house is determined by your ability to fill beds consistently. Once a fraternity demonstrates this ability, they can apply for independent housing. I would guess this will be a least a couple of years from now. In the meantime, the guys like being in the center of campus. ☺

This year, 30 men received a total of $21,500 in scholarships. This does not include the Bell Chapter scholarships or other Sigma Chi fraternity scholarships. Our solid support of the house continues to be a good motivator at Rush time, not to mention helping the guys with large financial need to attend a great university. If you would like to ‘give back’ to the house, you can support our scholarships by contacting Jim Booth at 503-363-8718 or [email protected]. In addition or instead of, you can send a check to the house for help with newsletter and other costs…if you would like to do this, send your check to Dylan King, Box E 158, Willamette University or House President, Box C 114, Willamette University, 900 State Street, Salem, OR 97301. In hoc, Jim Booth ‘64 Chair, House Corp/Scholarships

Bell Chapter Challenge (BCC)

Our Sigma Chi Foundation created the BCC program as a means by which Alumni can support their home Chapter with tax deductible contributions.

When properly funded, Delta Zeta’s Bell Chapter proceeds entitle our young men at Willamette the following benefits:

• 3 Additional free undergraduate registration slots at Balfour LTW (8 total) • $250 Balfour LTW Travel Stipend • 1 Designated Horizons Slot • 2 Designated $1,000 Academic Scholarships that will recognize lead donor • Sigma Chi Crossroads drug and alcohol retreat at no cost to Chapter • 1 Donor plague for chapter house • 1 Exclusive Bell Chapter dinner invitation at Balfour LTW

Our long term objective is to fully endow Delta Zeta’s fund with $250,000, which will guarantee these benefits for the life of the Chapter. In the short term, we must raise $10,000 a year to keep Bell benefits flowing on an annual basis. Currently, we are short on funding for the 2016-2017 academic year. We need help from every Delta Zeta Brother to meet these goals! We are fortunate to have the services of Major Gift Officer, Jim Lawson, to assist in raising funds. Jim is employed by the Sigma Chi Foundation. He may be contacted by calling 841-563-0230, or e-mailed at [email protected]. Call Jim now! In the meantime, if you have questions and would enjoy some dialogue, feel free to telephone me at 503-796-2989 in my Portland office.

Fraternally, Bob Jospeh
