Ministers Report

John 13: 34, 35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also

you must love one another. By this, all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one

another.”

It is with great joy that I write this Ministers Report. I was appointed as a Student Intern

Minister on July 1, 2015 and now have had the pleasure of serving just over six months of what

will be a two year internship prior to my Ordination with the United Church of Canada. For

those of you who have not had the opportunity to meet me, my name is Lynne Gardiner and I am

a second-career graduate from Queen’s Theological College. I was granted my Masters of

Divinity in May of 2015, and prior to coming to this charge served as a Student supply Minister

for nearly two years at a small country church in Seaway Valley Presbytery.

My six months has flown by, and has been a flurry of activity to get to know people, providing

worship and pastoral care, attending meetings at all levels of the church and serving to spread the

Good News in our home communities, and beyond. I have been welcomed with open arms,

nudged in necessary directions and had the opportunity to worship God with you week in and

week out. I have truly been blessed to have this opportunity, this care, and this welcome. You

have been such a Gift to me.

As well as providing me with much support and direction, you have welcomed my family; my

two children, Elizabeth and Emily and my spouse, Hugh. All of us have been embraced and

shown what it truly means to be part of the Family of God. My family has been ‘fitted’ into

church activities in a way that has been comfortable and comforting for us all; our attempts at

amateur singing have been embraced, Emily has been mentored to teach Sunday School and all

of us have been ‘shown the ropes’ in providing meals, hospitality and clean-up at both churches.

I am so looking forward to our next few years together, and to investigate with all of you about

what it means to be a community together; a community that worships together, plays together

and supports each other out of devotion to our God. I truly believe that I have been granted the

greatest gift; the gift of an internship in a place that understands what it means to live out the

scriptures quoted above.

Student Intern Minister.

Council Chair’s Report

Delta United Church Council Chair Report

Congregation and council please give yourself a big pat on the back! After a very long and at times

stressful two and a half years we were successful in obtaining our minister.

I want to thank council chairs for all their help in 2015 - your wisdom and co-operation to matters is appreciated more than you know.

To our church "elves" that keep an eye on the church and are there to assist in the time of need. To our

choir, organist, UCW and Sunday school have FAITH and keep up the good work.

To those church members as well as the community volunteers who help with our fund raising that

enables us to stay in the black and at times purchase those items we need to operate the church.

South Crosby Public School breakfast program every Thursday morning has been an important out

reach for those who participate - Arvin Riskie, Sheila Riskie, Arlo Boyce, Irene Goodsell, Jana Curtis,

Cheryl Simpson, Sally Wanless, Ilona French and I. Our UCW donates monthly to the milk program

as well.

I am looking forward to your support as your council Chair for 2016.

Trustees Report

A huge thanks to all those who went to work on the well by blasting it and removing a lot of

built up sand so we now have good water, as per a water test taken in December. Mac has only

had to change the filter once since it was done and we did not run out of water even through our

busy Christmas Season. Great work done by all and it only cost around $400.

We are still having issues with the main roof. In 2013 it was nailed down and repaired where

required, painted, snow guard installed, eaves troughs repaired, bricks sealed, the brick chimney

removed, soffits and window frames painted. This seemed to be enough at the time but in August

2014 and again this year we experienced some high winds and torrential rain and the roof started

leaking around the steeple. We had some more repairs done at the cost of $2300 but that was to

fix the area over the choir loft that had been leaking and had not been part of the project in 2013.

The original contractor did come back and nailed down the area around the steeple again but it is

still leaking and he said that the wood underneath was wet so it would only be a matter of time

before it started to deteriorate. We received a quote of $10,000 plus $1300 HST from Hamelin

to do the west side of the roof and another $11,300 if we want to do the east side.

Remarks on Quote “This would include material, roof rigging equipment, man lift, labour, and

liability insurance ($2,000,000): also employee insurance through Workplace Safety and

Insurance Board (WSIB # 2960512). PROPOSAL: ROOF REPAIR On the west side of the

church we will strap the roof and install flashings where needed. A new ridge cap will also be

installed. To make the roof 100% waterproof the east side would need to be completed as well.

This may leak if the wind and rain is from the east. A similar cost for this side of the church.”

The Trustees will be meeting in the near future to discuss capital funding to “Raise the Roof”

and will also look for any grant opportunities.

One of the RBC Five in One GIC came due in May, so $2000 was deposited into our RB

Account leaving $8000 in investments. Instead of reinvesting at the time we left it in the account

just in case we needed it for the well but it may be needed for roof repairs.

We extend a very special thanks to Mac and Barb MacLean for once again collecting $1184.76

this year in scrap metal, spent batteries and copper wire. Since 2011 and approximately 25 bins

later they have collected a total of $16,648.38 in cash for our Capital Projects Fund. They have

not only helped to raise money but have been very instrumental in cleaning up Delta and area.

Thanks also to Glenview Iron and Metal in Smiths Falls who have donated the bins at no charge

just because over 50 years ago their parents were married at Delta United. We are truly blessed

to have such faithful friends.

We are hopeful for a new 2 door beverage fridge in the New Year using monies from memorial

donations received. It will be an asset for all of our fund raising efforts and safe food storage.

Thanks to everyone who cares and works hard for the Delta United Church.

Worship Report

God works in mysterious ways in our lives and uses our talents as His means to “Feed His Sheep

and do His Work”. As followers of Christ it is how we use these talents that make the difference

in our lives and that of others and we give thanks for all our blessings. St. Paul wrote “Give

Thanks to God for Everything” - for the many blessings received and for the lessons learned by

our mistakes.

Delta United Church is truly blessed to have so many talents within our congregation and

community as we work in harmony together for without them we would not accomplish all that

we do and for that we give thanks.

Our Worship Committee has so many people to give thanks to for all the work that is done each

Sunday and behind the scenes each week to bring the worship and special music to our church.

We were truly blessed when The Rev Judith Evenden came to help us in February. She had a lot

of work of do as we had been on our own for too long so it was different to have a leader there to

help us. Thanks to Judith for getting us organized and on the right path again. I believe that God

heard our prayers and sent Judith as our answer to them. We bade farewell at a special

congregational meeting in Toledo but although Judith is gone from us she is not too far away as

she left us with our yellow flag of “Holy Manners” Thanks Judith for your leadership.

And finally after many more prayers we found our Intern Student Minister in Lynne Gardiner.

Lynne came to us in July and will seek ordination with us during the SME (Supervised Ministry

Education Process) over the next 2 years. Lynne is always smiling, works hard, delivers

wonderful, memorable sermons and I believe has felt right at home as we opened our arms and

hearts to her and her family. On her first Sunday with us we hosted a waffle and strawberry

breakfast and as you all know we like to eat as we enjoy the fellowship around the table which I

believe made Lynne and her family feel welcome.

Thanks to Mary Ann Dobrik, who taught the choir so many beautiful songs and now with her

relocation to Brockville, left us with a lovely repertoire of music. Mary not only taught us the

music she coached each one of us and helped us to do the very best we could. I am so thankful

that I had the opportunity to learn from Mary, a very talented musician.

I fear that I am no replacement for Mary but I did try to keep the choir organized with the help of

Bonnie Bilton playing for practises and Jean Yves on Sunday morning. We did manage to carry

on with beautiful music.

I want to thank Chris Whitty for his composing and Bonnie for the musical arrangement and to

Jean Yves for accompanying the music we sang throughout the Christmas season. It was lovely,

different and we had fun singing it. For some reason the music is still in my head and I quite

often find myself humming away “That Star, That Star”…

Special thanks to the choir... Chris, Louise, Lillian, Jana, Bruce, Bonnie, Millard and Irene who

were always willing to take an evening out of their lives to practise and come early on Sunday to

practise some more. I think we carried on fairly well especially with the addition of Hugh and

Emily and sometimes Elizabeth and Lynne Gardiner as their voices certainly enhanced our

singing.

Thanks to Florence and Barb who worked behind the scenes to make sure there were people in

place to greet and take up the offering, set up and put away after communion, making sure there

were flowers in the church for special occasions and that the candles were ready to light. You

may think it isn’t much but it is and we appreciate all you have done to make our church a quiet,

holy place to come and give our thanks to God.

Very special thanks to our own lay people…you are amazing and always willing to take on a

service when needed. Thanks to Rev Bruce our Minister Emeritus, Chris Whitty, Millard

Goodsell and Dick Christman for helping out again this year. We are so very fortunate to have

people in our congregation who are willing to lead in Worship and I know the amount of time it

takes to put a service together; but in the end, I believe, it helps us to grow stronger in our faith.

Thanks to all those who will read Scripture and Minute for Mission each Sunday.

Thanks to Pat Phillips for her many, many years of doing the church bulletin. It is truly a

dedicated effort to do this weekly especially for someone as busy as Pat is. I don’t know how

she managed during the busy summer of fund raising…

Thanks to Pat Greenhorn for her work with the Sunday school children. The children are always

excited to see what has been planned for them each week. We need to thank Pat more often for

her dedication as she is truly a blessing to our church and to this generation of children…

The church was beautifully decorated this year for all special occasions, especially at Christmas.

There is nothing more inviting and comforting than worshipping together with the warm white

lights encircling us and the beautiful Christmas tree at the front. We added more stars to our

Memorial Tree with its white branches and coloured lights in remembrance of loved ones we

hold dear in our hearts. If you wish to add someone to the tree please see Pat or Cathy.

Delta United has always been a place where we can feel welcome and even though

circumstances change we continue to move forward. It is a place where we can weep, we can

laugh and we can be angry for things that are out of our control and yet we are still accepted and

loved; perhaps more so.

I read somewhere that one of the best gifts you can give someone is the gift of thanking them for

being part of your life and for that I truly give thanks for each one of you and I am thankful to be

part of the Delta United Church family.

Christian Education Report

Sunday school attendance over the past year has ranged from two to seven children weekly. In

the spring of 2015, we partnered with the Arms of Jesus Children’s Mission once again for a

Lenten project. With the generous support of the congregation, we raised $650 to help Nataly

Valaquez, a thirteen year old girl from Guatemala. Nataly has a progressive eye disease, and her

family was unable to afford the eye drops that would prevent her blindness. With our assistance,

she was able to receive almost 5 months of medication, and to return to school. Your kindness

and compassion have changed her life- thank you!

In September 2015, we kicked off the new Sunday school year with a new curriculum: “SPARK

Activate Faith”. The programme follows the church calendar, with Old Testament lessons in the

fall and New Testament stories in the winter and spring. On our “Rally Sunday” in September,

each of the children attending was presented with their own Bible. The younger children

received the “SPARK Story Bible”, while the older children were given “The Jesus Storybook

Bible”. We also organized a very successful food drive for South Crosby Elementary school, and

filled their classroom snack bins with healthy food items.

I am most grateful this year for the assistance of Emily Gardiner in Sunday School She is an

experienced and enthusiastic teacher, and it is a delight and a blessing to welcome her and share

teaching duties with her.

Please encourage any children you know in the community to attend. I also encourage you to

join us any Sunday to share stories and songs, and have fun as we grow in faith!

Yours in Christ

Delta United Outreach

As a small rural church, we dedicate ourselves as much as we can in helping others in our

community and beyond. We are “the little church that can” make a difference in the lives of

others locally and in the greater world.

We met our church budget of $4500.00 budget and the UCW gave $500.00 to the Mission &

Service Fund of the United Church of Canada.

Another great Lenten project led by Pat Greenhorn and the Sunday school partnering with ‘The

Arms of Jesus Mission’ raised $650 to help Nataly Valaquez, a thirteen year old girl from

Guatemala who has a progressive eye disease, purchase eye drops to prevent blindness.

Our hall continues to be the home of the Beverley Seniors who meet monthly, the Delta

Community Food Bank which actively helps many families in the community and the Good Food

Box program for the community to pick up pre-ordered fruit and vegetables.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to be well received by all those who have been given

shawls as well as those who are creating them.

The Kid’s Club continues to attract over 15 children from the community who met every other

Monday to do a craft, play a game and have a snack. Special thanks to Rachel Marks and Jen

Hall-Verhouven for their leadership.

The Rideau Islands and Lakes Theatre group met once again every Thursday evening. Rachel

Marks is always willing to help out in the community whenever an event requires a talented

group of actors/actresses and in turn her students help serve at our annual Turkey Supper.

In October our church partnered with the Delta Mill Society by hosting a Ham Supper at the Old

Town Hall as part of the 1st annual Harvest Festival.

In November & December we took part once again in the 11th

annual Celebrating the Season

where our church partners with Lower Beverley Lake Park by serving meals to the public during

the five Saturday nights of the event serving over 800.

We also have a dedicated crew who every Thursday morning serves breakfast to students as part

of the Breakfast Program at South Crosby Public School.

Branch 207 of the Royal Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary uses our church hall during the

winter months for meetings and other events. In the New Year the Delta Agricultural Society

will also be using our church hall for their meetings during the winter months.

May we continue to be a caring and giving church, doing God’s work by loving our neighbours,

by opening the doors of this church, by going beyond our walls to serve and give to those in need

and may we continue to reach out and make our church a place where all can feel welcome!

Propane - (Heating and cooking) - Equal billing with Levac is currently at $300.00 per month. Total

cost for propane for 2015 was $2,799.13. We do have a credit of $2,059.69 which we can utilize

when the need arises. Some of this credit will be used up after March 1, 2016.

Insurance - Marsh Insurance continues to be our company, as recommended by Presbytery, with DLK

as our Broker. The 2015 policy cost was $2,036.88

Water Quality - A new Ultra Violet light, with an alarm system, has been installed due to some

concerns by the Health Department. Our water is sampled every three months by Caduceon Labs in

Kingston at a cost of $65.00 per test with a total cost of $265.00 for the year. Please note the cost has

increased to $70.00 per test for 2016. The Health Unit is sent a copy of the test.

Septic Pump outs - Our septic pump outs remain $205.00 per pump out for a total cost of $844.10 for

the church. Our UCW donated $500.00 towards the cost of pump outs. One free pump out was donated

by Campbell's during the Celebrating the Season festivities.

Lawn Care - Connor Pearson mowed the grass in 2015 at a cost of $420.00. The flower beds were

that reduced the cost of these services. As St. Andrews now have internet service we will not be

reimbursed for Internet services from Central Treasurer in 2016.

Hydro - Our cost for hydro was $2,104.53

Caretaker - Connor Pearson was our caretaker for 2015 at $60.00 per month for the general weekly

Notes from President Cathy

At our February Meeting we hosted a memorial service in honour of two special ladies - Helen

Ross and Lorna Pearson - giving thanks for their loyalty and faithful witness to the Delta United

Church, UCW and to Jesus Christ. We ended the memorial singing the hymn “Abide With Me”.

In the New Year we will be meeting to knit and crochet prayer shawls as our inventory is getting

low, but if you would prefer, you can do them at home, but it is more fun sitting around the table

visiting while working. If you need yarn and/or hooks and knitting needles please let me know

and the UCW will purchase them for you. Thanks to Lillian Willison who has done most of our

shawls for us. Special thanks for the beautiful aqua one she did for me this summer.

Thanks to Edith who has prepared and mailed out the donations of stamps and Campbell’s soup

labels over the years. We will continue to collect them and empty outer milk bags for South

Crosby Public School.

I am very proud of what this small group of women have accomplished especially this year.

Through our fund raising efforts along with memorial donations we raised over $3200.00. We

transferred $500 to the church to help with septic pump outs, $100 for Bibles for our Sunday

school program and donated $500 to Mission and Service and $950 to other local non profit

groups in need. Thanks to everyone for their continued support.

All women are welcome to join us so if you want more information please speak with myself or

Pat Phillips. Our meetings are normally the 3rd

Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. but can be

subject to change depending on schedules. We do have a good time when we all come together!

Four Rivers Presbytery Representative Report

On May 19, 2015 the Presbytery Executive approved the appointment of Lynn Gardiner as

minister of Delta/Toledo pastoral charge.

An update was provided relating to the decisions made by the General Council 42 and what

follow-up is required. The Presbytery could possibly go to a 3-Court structure – National

Body, Regional Body, and Local Congregations. If a final decision is made regarding this

issue, the congregations must vote.

General Council have appointed Jordan Cantwell as the new Moderator.

The second Syrian family sponsored by The Four Rivers Presbytery has arrived in Canada.

Joint Search Committee (JSC)

The Joint Search Committee met on a regular basis for approximately three years and after an

extensive search and many Interim and Supply Ministers, our prayers were answered. On July

1st 2015 under the Supervised Ministry Education program we hired Lynne Gardiner, a Student

Minister, for our Delta-Toledo Charge. She has proven to be a wonderful addition to our family.

We give thanks to all who helped us during this process. Special thanks to The Rev Judith

Evenden who served our charge from February to the end of June and was very instrumental

in ‘preparing the way’ so we could continue as a SME site. With God's guidance and Judith’s

leadership we now have an excellent candidate in Lynne and pray she will be with us for many

years to come.

Ministry and Personnel Committee

In late second quarter of 2015 Rev. Judith Evenden met with the Ministry and Personnel

Committee at St. Andrew’s United in Toledo.

Representing St Andrew’s in attendance was Nancy Seed and Anna Johnston.

Representing Delta United was Howard French. Absent due to other commitments was Chris &

Marcella Parsons.

Rev. Judith reviewed the responsibilities of the committee with those in attendance. The detail

was explained for the difference between the Ministry & Personnel Committee and the Ministry

Reflections Group that was established due to our Minister being in the student program.

Members of the Committee frequently ask Lynn Gardiner if there are any issues. The comment is

that everything is going well.

We have not met again as there is no need to have a meeting for the sake of having a meeting. In

learning about the 2 committees there appeared to be significant overlap.

There is no need to burn volunteer time when there is no need.

On behalf of the committee I believe this report reflects the sentiments of those involved.

Respectfully Submitted by,

Howard French, Ministry and Personnel Chair
