    1st International DelPHE Conference on Construction Management

    in Developing Countries: Education, Training, Research and Practice

    Khartoum, Sudan, 10th-13th March 2013

    The construction industry everywhere, given its specialproblems and requirements, faces problems andchallenges. Developing countries are faced withchallenges, which are different in nature and contextthan those of developed countries are notoriouslycharacterized by weak and unstable socio-economicperformance attributed, inter alia, to extendedurbanization, wars and conflicts, and environmentaldepletion. The UN asserted that sub-Saharan Africaremains the region with the highest prevalence ofslums.

    Sponsorship and International Participation

    The conference is co-sponsored by CIB. Two membersfrom the CIB are participating in the conference askeynote speakers: Prof Chrisna du Plessiss and Prof.

    Amira Osman.

    Keynote Speakers

    Chrisna has been Coordinator of a CIBCommission on Urban Sustainability andwas the main author of the joint

    CIB/UNEP Agenda on SustainableConstruction in Developing Countries.Chrisna has more than 20 yearsexperience in sustainable humansettlement development, both as

    practitioner and as researcher. Internationally, Chrisnahas been a member of a number of working groups onsustainable construction and urban sustainability, and

    has served on the board and/or scientific committee ofseveral international conferences. She representedSouth Africa in the Earth Charter drafting andconsultation process and has acted as expert advisorto organisations such as the United NationEnvironment Programme and the Clinton ClimatePositive Development Programme.

    Chrisna was recently appointed Coordinator of the CIBPriority Theme Sustainable Construction.

    Prof. Amira Omer Siddig Osman is anassociate professor in architecture at theUniversity of Johannesburg. Prior to thatshe worked as a Senior Researcher at CSIRin Pretoria, South Africa. She finished herMasters in Architecture at the University of

    Khartoum in Sudan in 1996 and her PhD inArchitecture at the University of Pretoria in 2004.Amira taught in various institutions. She also workedas an architect in Khartoum and as a United NationVolunteer UNV in Maseru, Lesotho. Her research focusareas are housing and human settlements, OpenBuilding, informal settlements and government-subsidized social rental housing.

    Amira believes that the architectural profession has acritical role to play in the achievement of humansettlements that are more equitable, more beautifuland more functional human settlements thatincrease opportunities, offering people a better chanceat improving their lives and livelihoods. The belief that

    the profession has the potential to offer both technical

    and social expertise towards these aims is the drivingforce behind Amiras research projects and in herprofessional roles.Amira is Coordinator of CIB Commission W110 -Informal Settlement and Affordable Housing.

    Conference Themes

    The main theme of the conference is ConstructionManagement in Developing Countries: Education,

    Training, Research and Practice.The sub-themes of the conference include: Construction industry in developing countries; role of women in the construction industry; the construction industry in areas of conflicts

    and crisis; Construction Management Education; Management of mega Projects;

    Human resources in construction; Community participation in construction; Sustainable Social Housing Best practices in education, research and

    training related to the CI in developingcountries.

    Submission of Papers

    Researchers and practitioners are invited to submitresearch papers and insightful case studies on any ofthe above-listed themes for presentation in theconference. Papers will be peer reviewed by a panel ofinternational scholars and experts and will be

    published in the Conference Proceedings.

    Many paper covering different themes of the eventhave been accepted for publication. The papers comefrom different countries including (Sudan, UK, USA,Russia, Ireland, and Nigeria). We believe that thisdiversification will add to the value of the conferencegiven that it is the first of its type in the Sudan. Inaddition to the received papers, there will be a coupleof keynote speakers from Sudan and the UK as well as

    movies related to the themes of the conference.

    The conference will feature a Poster Session to providepostgraduate students and researchers with theopportunity of illustrating their research topics, ideas,and progress.
