Lakeview, Ore. – In an effort to prevent damage to its unpaved roads, the Fremont-Winema National Forest urges the public to refrain from driving on wet, muddy roads. “We know that after a long winter people are eager to get out into the Forest,” said Amanda Warner Thorpe, Assistant Forest Engineer. “After a wet winter and spring, the ground is saturated, making driving conditions extremely difficult. This also creates potential for resource damage on Forest roads.” To ensure for safety, protect vital access routes, and care for the land, Forest officials are asking visitors to use common sense while driving on Forest roads. Driving on soft, muddy, unsurfaced roads can easily cause deep wheel ruts, resulting in road damage and soil erosion. Proper and responsible use of vehicles on Forest roads is important to ensure roads remain in good shape for other visitors. Causing damage to roads and other Forest resources can be a violation of federal regulations, which could carry a fine up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail. Forest users also should use defensive driving techniques while on Forest roads. This includes adjusting speed to current weather and road conditions and staying alert for the unexpected, including other vehicles, livestock, as well as rocks, fallen trees and road washouts.

New this year, all Forest users need to obtain a free Fremont-Winema National Forest’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) that is available at all local Service Forest offices and Web

site (www.fs.usda.gov/goto/fremont-winema/travelmanagement). Only those Forest Service roads and motorized trails shown on the MVUM are available for motor vehicle use. Routes designated for motorized use may not always be signed on the ground, but will be identified on the MVUM. It is the public’s responsibility to refer to the MVUM to determine where they are allowed to use motor vehicles. Regardless of what other maps may show as motorized routes, only those routes identified on the MVUM are available for motorized use. It is also each motorized user’s responsibility to know the rules and regulations displayed on the MVUM and to operate their motorized vehicles in accordance with them. The MVUM covers the entire Forest and has been divided into 11 maps to provide sufficient detail for users. The maps are black-and-white with limited landmarks and reference points. They follow strict national standards that require the symbols to be simple in order to highlight road and motorized trail information. They are not stand-alone maps, but are intended to be used in conjunction with other Forest Service maps, such as the Forest Visitor Map. For more information about road conditions, obtaining a MVUM, and how to suggest revisions to the MVUM or to report resource damage, please contact the following Fremont-Winema National Forest offices: RANGER DISTRICTS Bly Ranger District 61100 Hwy 140 E, Bly, OR (541) 353-2427 Chemult Ranger District 110500 Hwy 97 N, Chemult, OR (541) 365-7001 Chiloquin Ranger District 38500 Hwy 97 N, Chiloquin, OR (541) 783-4001 Klamath Falls Ranger District 2819 Dahlia St, Klamath Falls, OR (514) 883-6714 Lakeview Interagency Office 1301 South G St., Lakeview, OR (541) 947-2151 Lakeview Ranger District 18049 Hwy 395, Lakeview, OR (541) 947-3334 Paisley Ranger District 303 Hwy 31, Paisley, OR (541) 943-3114 Silver Lake Ranger District 65600 Hwy 31, Silver Lake, OR (541) 576-2107 -

The May 31st event is part of Oregon Humanities’ statewide Conversation Project. What this country most needs, some say, are people of our Founding Fathers’ caliber--another Abe Lincoln or Franklin Roosevelt--to step forward with the courage and wisdom necessary to solve our daunting problems. An opposing point of view holds that in a state or country with free and open elections, people get the government they deserve. Do the failures of modern governance and politics have more to do with a crisis of leadership or a crisis of citizenship? This is the focus of “The Tranquil Dedication of a Lifetime: A Practical Exploration of Citizenship,” a free conversation with author Jeff Golden on Thursday, May 31st at 7 pm at the Chiloquin Community Center. This program is hosted by Chiloquin Visions in Progress and sponsored by Oregon Humanities. Golden has served as Jackson County commissioner, chief of staff to the Oregon Senate president, and environmental policy aide to the City of Portland. He is a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum and a media fellow of the Property and Environment Research Center. His books include Watermelon Summer, As If We Were Grownups, Forest Blood, and Unafraid: A Novel of the Possible. Golden was a Harvard National Scholar and holds a master’s degree in communications from Stanford University. Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state's future. For more information about this free community discussion, please contact Jan Voyles at 541-891-1569 or [email protected]. Oregon Humanities (813 SW Alder St, #702; Portland, OR 97205) connects Oregonians to ideas to change lives and transform communities. More information about Oregon Humanities’ programs and publications, which include the Conversation Project, Think & Drink, Humanity in Perspective, Happy Camp, Public Program Grants, Responsive Program Grants, and Oregon Humanities magazine, can be found at oregonhumanities.org. With a dedication to the protection of natural lands in Klamath and Lake Counties, we serve the community through: - Conserving wildlife habitat - Protecting scenic and open spaces valued by the community - Facilitating community education regarding conservation. We accomplish conservation primarily through: - ecosystem restoration projects; - selective land acquisitions; - and conservation easements. Conservation easements are voluntary legal agreements with interested landowners to permanently protect their land. Learn more about how we are making a difference in making this region such a wonderful and scenic place to live at our website by clicking here. A full horizon ahead: This summer, we'll be hosting a variety of public nature hikes, making several community presentations, and collaborating with community partners on several key land conservation plans around Klamath County.

Events of interest to gardeners: A message from Joan: I made a fabulous discovery in Central Point this weekend. I saw the garden of Kathy Allen, who sells rock garden plants at the Master Gardener’s plant fair every year. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe her garden. The exciting news is that it is open to the public on May 16-19 and May 23-26. A couple of us are planning a day trip on one of the days between May24-26. If you are interested in joining the trip, contact me at 783-3135 or [email protected].

The following wildflower field trips are sponsored by the Klamath Basin Chapter of the Native Plant Society, Klamath County Museum, Fremont-Winema National Forest, and Crater Lake National Park. For all trips it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes or boots, plenty of water, sun screen and/or a hat, and a lunch. Be prepared for mosquitoes at most sites. Contact the trip leaders for more information. Missy Anderson - Forest Service Chiloquin District Office 541- 783-4001 Jen Beck - Crater Lake National Park 541-594-3072 Klamath County Museum 541-883-4208 Victoria Tenbrink Forest Service Klamath District Office 541-885-3400 Sarah Malaby- 541-884-5703 June 2 Gardening with Natives The Klamath County Museum will offer “Workshop II: Plant Tour at the Museum” at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2. This will include a look at some of the 50-plus native plants being grown in the museum’s naturescape garden – including flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees. Also featured: interesting rocks from the region. Free and open to anyone interested. June 16 Telephone Flat 9 am-noon led by Victoria Tenbrink From the corner of Biehn St and Highway 97 in Klamath Falls, go north 20 miles. Just before the Jeld-Wen plant, turn right into a big dirt road junction with lots of parking for people who want to carpool. We'll meet there at 9 am. From there, we will continue up the left fork of the road, which is FS 9715 (gravel). Two miles up the road is a cattle guard and just past that, turn right on FS 9713 (also gravel but narrower). The gravel ends about 0.8 miles up the road. Keep going about 0.1 miles where there is a side road on the left. Park there and we will walk a short distance to the meadow. Telephone Flat is a complex habitat, with wet and dry meadows, sagebrush shrublands, aspen groves, and conifer forest. June 23 Hike above Moore Park 8:30 am-11:30 am led by Sarah Malaby Meet at the Eualona trailhead off of Cypress Ave. above the old Riverside School. At the west end of Main Street, continue west up N. Carroll Street then turn right onto Cypress. The trailhead is a short distance up Cypress on the right. This will be an approximately 3 mile hike with some elevation gain on unmaintained trails. We will see a diversity of plants and great views in all directions as we hike through juniper shrublands, mountain mahogany thickets, mixed conifer forest, and scablands. July 7 Marin’s Dairy 9 am led by Vicky Liskey We will meet at the Midland rest stop at 9:00 AM and car pool from there. This area is west of highway 97 between Dorris and MacDole. It is easy access from our cars. Bring a lunch and call me to let me know how many might be going. Open to any one. 541-891-7019 or e-mail [email protected] July 14 Short Creek Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at Sevenmile guard station, which is near Sevenmile Creek, at the junction of Nicholson Road and Forest Roads 3200/3100. To get there go to Fort Klamath, turn west onto Nicholson Road and go 4 miles, until you reach FS land, then turn right (north) onto FS Rd. 3200. We will follow Short Creek, heading south along FS Rd. 3100 and ending up on the Westside Rd. There will be some walking off-trail for short distances. Of course mosquito repellant will likely be needed! July 21 Dry Creek 9 am-noon, led by Sarah Malaby Meet at the Great Meadows Sno-park at 9 am. The Sno-Park is off Highway 140 approximately 30 miles west of Klamath Falls, near the Dead Indian Memorial Road junction. From there, we will caravan to the field trip site at Forest Road 3640-020. The trip will consist of approximately 1 mile of easy walking on the Dry Creek Snowmobile Trail. We did this trip last year and not many people came, but it is a great area to view forest wildflowers, so we are giving people a second chance to attend. August 4 4-Mile Lake Area 9 am-noon led by Missy Anderson Meet at the junction of Highway 140 and FS Rd 3661 (this is the road to 4-Mile Lake, about ½ mile before MP 35). We will mainly be exploring the interesting riparian and boggy habitat around Bull Swamp. There are no

trails through this area and walking will be moderate to difficult in places (e.g. climbing over downed logs and through wet areas, etc). Rubber boots/waders (or shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy) are recommended. Mosquitoes are expected, so bug spray/net would be good too. August 18 Crater Lake Garfield Peak Trail 9 am to noon led by Jen Beck Meet near the east end of the Crater Lake Lodge at Rim Village. Hike is 3.4 miles round trip and a strenuous climb (1000' elevation gain) to the summit of Garfield Peak along the Crater Lake rim. Please note that participants will need to pay a $10 entrance fee or have a park pass.

The Chiloquilters are looking for entries for their annual quilt show that will be held Saturday, June 30th and Sunday, July 1st. If you have a quilt you would like to enter, please contact Eleanor Stone at 541-783-2551 or e-mail [email protected]. There is a limited amount of space at the show, so it is first come first served. Once we have enough quilt entries we will not be able to accept more. Entry forms can be picked up in the lobby of the Community Center or can be e-mailed to you. The deadline to have your entries in is June 9th, if we have not received the amount we need to fill the show before that.

I began my quilting career in the late early 1980's as a traditional quilter, but soon came to the conclusion that I enjoyed doing pieces which were a little outside the box. After becoming a member of a guild, I met a few like minded people, and thus the inception of Collective Visions (fractured quilts) came into being after viewing a trunk show by Cassandra Williams. The group has evolved and members have changed, however I remained as one of the three original artists. The first three pieces which I designed were inspired by images from various Dover Books which were copyright free. The first one completed is titled "Bamboo Gardens". The original image is the part on which the butterflies and flowers reside. Five members of the group at that time (Carol Dougan, Joanne Baethe, Susie Fitts, Dona Ford and myself) created this piece. The piece was painted, trapuntoed, beaded, thread painted, stenciled and quilted. Wire crochet, melted yarns and recycled pieces of jewelry were also used. My second endeavor for this group was a water scene entitled "The Pondering Life" which is actually three separate pieces which hang as one. The section with the frogs was the original pattern tweaked

somewhat. It was done by Carol Bowen, Joanne Baethe, Dona Ford, Susan Massini, and myself. It was accomplished through painting, beading, trapunto, fusing of fabric, creating silk fabric with rovings, thread painting, and quilting. The bird on the far left was done by quilting the image first and then adding numerous layers of color through the use of colored pencils, watercolor pencils and gel pens. The last piece of this display is an tropical underwater scene titled "Sushi Anyone". This piece was constructed in a different manner than the first two in that the five participants (Joanne Baeth, Cheryl Carbone, Dona Ford, Susan Massini and myself) each completed elements of the design and then I created the background for the elements to be placed on.

Being a member of this group has been a very special experience for me. Not only have I gotten to know and become friends with some wonderful people, but they have caused me to grow as an fiber artist in way which I had never imagined. I highly treasure the relationships and education which I have garnered over the past seven years. Louise Page

It is likely, that if you are the victim of a crime, that the Sheriff’s Department will not respond. This is because the Sheriff’s Department is underfunded and understaffed, and not able to respond to crimes unless lives are in danger. But still, crimes need to be reported! They need to be tracked, and sometimes patterns can be figured out that might help apprehend a criminal. Crimes can be reported immediately online, and it is possible to get a print out of your report to have on hand. The direct link to the online reporting feature is http://report.citizenserviceportal.com/Report.aspx?agency=kcso

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Storytime: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. Story time is at Thursday 2:30 PM during the school year. 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
