On 6 September 2014 we had a leadership development day that was hosted by Camp Chameleon.

During this fruitful morning, activities were done to develop leadership and to promote a feeling of unity amongst the newly elected RCL. Some challenging activities were presented and the learners really had to work together to be able to complete it successfully. We ended the day off with pizza and went home at 2:30 for a well deserved rest.

GRADE 6 CAMP The Grade 6 class participated in a camp that was designed to instill and improve their cooperative and team building skills. They were given the opportunity to participate in a number of activities. These activities provided the learners with an opportunity to learn and implement the principles of leadership, citizenship and good sportsmanship through classroom discussions, competitive sports and other recreational activities. We thank the school and parents for the opportunity to experience this camp. It was really a time for teachers to observe and understand the learners’ development in terms of personal aspirations, psychological behaviours and social skills. The camp also helped our children to appreciate their environment and natural surroundings.

THUSANG

THUSANG 2014 - THANK YOU

We hosted Thusang again this year and once again, it was a real eye opener for all. We would just like to thank the organizers of Thusang who handed over a check of R7000 to our school. These funds will be utilized for our school’s feeding scheme and to assist learners with food parcels for weekends and over the December holidays. Thank you so much Thusang for helping us to help our learners.

FROM MR. W JACOBS Welcome back to the 4th and final term of 2014. This term is very important as all the learners will be writing examinations. It is up

to the parents to help and assist their children in preparing for the examinations.

Here are some tips in assisting your children to study.

HINTS TO HELP IMPROVE STUDY SKILLS

1. GENERAL GUIDELINES Check to see that all schoolwork is up to date. Ensure that they prepare in advance. Make sure the learners follow a study timetable. Ensure that it is followed daily. Study for at least three times twenty minutes sessions per day, to be able to cover at least 3 Subjects per day. Take a 10 minute break between sessions. Draw mind-maps for each learning area to get an overall picture of what sections need to be learnt. This will help you to organise the information, identify main headings and look for main points.

To REMEMBER information better

See it

Say it

Write it

Repeat it SLEEP Sleep helps the mind to consolidate information. Therefore, get a good night’s sleep every day especially before

tests and exams.

DID Renovations The renovations are well on the way and we, as the school, are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all the learners

at school. All the teachers and learners are settled into the mobile classrooms. The mobile classrooms get very hot and we

encourage learners to drink lots of water. We also installed extra fans in the mobile classrooms to make it cooler for the learners

and teachers.

A big thank you to Mr. T Phoenix, the parent of Tyler in grade 1e1, for donating an air conditioner. He is also in the process of

looking for second hand air conditioners to donate to the school. If there is any other parent who can assist please feel free to

contact the school.

Late coming There are still too many learners arriving late in the primary school. This has a negative impact on the discipline of the school. It

causes unnecessary disruption of lessons. Learners coming late on a regular basis will be placed on detention. It is also against

departmental policy for learners to arrive late at school and these learners names will also be forwarded to the department of

education.

Summer Uniform All learners are wearing summer uniform. Parents must please make sure that learners are properly dressed at all times. Learners are not to wear beanies. We ask all parents for their assistance in this regard.

BARNYARD FUNDRAISER

Many thanks to all our staff, learners, parents and friends who supported our Barnyard fundraiser on 30 September at Cresta

Barnyard. This was a fantastic evening, enjoyed by all.

We would like to thank all parents for their donations made towards our raffle hamper, with special thanks to Pick ‘n Pay

Brightwater Commons and to Mr Patrick Linch for their generosity. Your donations were greatly appreciated.

GR. 12 FINAL PAT The Gr 12 learners had their final practical exam during term 3 and it went extremely well. The food was delectable and was prepared in a professional manner. The restaurant was attractively decorated. Each learner did their very best and really made our school proud. We received 6 distinctions and are very proud of this accomplishment. Well done matrics!!

MATRIC FAREWELL

We had a spectacular Vintage Ball to say goodbye to our matrics of 2014.This very special evening was held on 3 October at the beautiful Mount Usambara Wedding Venue. The evening started off outside on the veranda, under the stars with the most beautiful view of the Johannesburg lights. Each guest was welcomed warmly and enjoyed some cocktail snacks and drinks. Here the guests admired each other’s stunning dresses, tuxedos, beards, hair, shoes, nails, etc. Then the guests moved into the main hall which was decorated in a true vintage manner. This wonderful evening started off with speeches. The highlight of the evening was the Grade 12 DVD. It was a night to be remembered by all.

CASUAL DAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2014

We would like to thank all parents, guardians, learners and staff for supporting our Casual Day held on 5 September 2014. This was a most successful charity drive and we managed to raise R4570-00. GRADE 10 OUTING

GR 10 HOSPITALITY STUDIES OUTING TO “FOOOD” The gr 10 Hospitality Studies learners went on an educational outing to Café FOOOD in Cresta. They were taken on a tour of the

establishment and were shown how all the different areas in the kitchen, restaurant and bar work together to make Café Food one

of the most successful restaurants in Cresta Shopping Centre. Each learner also experienced a typical breakfast where they

sampled and enjoyed all the different breakfast dishes and coffees available on the market. The learners and educator enjoyed

the outing immensely and learnt a lot.

GRADE 11 OUTING

GR 11 HOSPITALITY STUDIES OUTING LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE

The gr 11 Hospitality Studies learners went on an educational outing to Lesedi Cultural Village. On our arrival we were greeted with traditional singing and drumming. Then we attended a multi-visual theatre presentation on the history and origin of African people, followed by traditional dancing of all the different tribes. Not only did we get to see all the different South African cultures, but we also had close and personal contact with five of them – the Zulus, the Xhosa, the Pedi, the colourful Ndebele people and the mountain people, the Basotho. Before leaving, we stopped at their craft market for last-minute shopping of curios and handmade local arts and crafts. The learners learnt a lot about the different cultures in our country, their traditions and their traditional food.

Grade 10 & 11 Camp

We left early on Monday 29 September for our adventure Camp at the Mountain Sanctuary Park in Magalies. On arrival, the

pupils had to pitch their tents and set up their little camps. Some learners were quite upset that they had to sleep in tents, but

ended up enjoying it.

We were treated to some delicious Curry and Rice before they set off for their Kloofing activity.

That evening, cookers and food packs were handed out, and the learners had to cook their own supper. After some evening

activities, the learners were all in bed by 9pm.

The next day, after some lovely French toast and bacon, they set out for an orienteering activity. With everyone safely back after

this, we had hamburgers at the swimming pool and the learners will able to cool off in the amazing pool. Afternoon activities took

place and we ended off the evening with a braai. After an adventurous sleep in extremely windy conditions, the learners once

again had to prepare their own breakfast in their cookers. At 1pm the bus arrived and we went home, tired, but happy. Thank you

to Ms De Vynck and Ms Siwisa for taking the learners to the camp.

INTERVIEW BY MR. T MOYO

Mr. Moyo: Good morning Mr. Jacobs and thank you for your time.

Mr. Jacobs: Good morning Mr. Moyo, it’s not a problem.

Mr. Moyo: I just want to ask you a few questions about Delta Park School, and term 4, tell us in short.

Mr. Jacobs: About term 4? This term is a short term and a very busy term as we only have 4 weeks and then we start with

exams, so basically we are looking at 8 weeks of school. We also have Honours’ Day also this term. We still have

under 9, 10 12 and 14 cricket that is going to take place this term. So like I said, it’s a very hectic and a busy term.

Mr. Moyo: Ok, do you have any word of encouragement for the learners and obviously the staff?

Mr. Jacobs: Look, for the learners it’s basically they must start studying from day one, make sure they have a study timetable,

make sure they study, make sure they complete all their work and just make sure they work hard. They must

sacrifice now for the next eight weeks and that is going to determine whether they will pass to the next grade or

not. To the staff, it’s a very hectic term and very busy, they must just make sure that they stick to due dates, they

must make sure that they do everything according to work schedule, and you know what, everything will be fine.

Mr. Moyo: Ok….. thank you once more. One more question if I may ask you. Tell us about the vision, goal, or mission for our school.

What are you expecting? Have we tried our level best in terms of our goal? Have we achieved something?

Mr. Jacobs: Yeah…….look, with the type of learners we are working with, it’s very difficult to set a goal that is cast in stone,

but you have to be adaptable. You have to look at situations. Every day you have to deal with it day by day

because of what is set in front of you. Some learners will come to school without medication, which will be a

challenge alone. I am happy with the school and staff performance and achievements. The staff have their own

challenges and we still manage to get through with the curriculum. We have managed to enable them to achieve to

the very best of their potential. So for the staff, they work hard and we are achieving our goals day by day.

Mr. Moyo: Thank you so much sir! Lastly, the staff……… team work??????

Mr. Jacobs: Look…….. as for the staff and as far as goes team work, it is very good because for any project or anything that I

ask of the staff, we don’t have just one person jumping in but all staff members jumping in and here I am talking

about the primary school and the high school. Sometimes the high school have projects and primary school jump

in. We had the revue this year. So overall, as a staff and as a team, we are working very hard.

Mr. Moyo: Thank you for your time and wish you the best for term 4.

Mr. Jacobs: Thank you Mr. Moyo

NEEDLECRAFT CLUB

We’ve had a wonderful response to the start of our needlecraft club. Both girls and boys have come eager to make their very own

creations. The project for this term was a hand-sewn bookmark. The children learned how to thread a needle, start and finish off

work, as well as how to sew different stitches (basic tacking and backstitch). We are excited to start our next project in term 4, so

please encourage your Grade 3-7 children to attend.

Please note that Needlecraft club is held on Fridays from 1:20pm – 2:00pm. Please plan accordingly to fetch your child from

school. Here are the dates for needlecraft club for term 4.

NO BOYS ALLOWED!!

In term 3, the girls played netball, skittles, experienced yoga, tried some softball pitching and hitting and ended off the term with a

fun game of duster hockey. We have seen a huge improvement in some of the girls’ skills. It is encouraging to see that the

activities are making a difference. Term 4 will see the duration of sports club being decreased to 30 minutes for the last leg of the

year. Please plan accordingly and continue to encourage your girls to attend sports club. Due to Matric examinations, we will only

have 2 sessions of sports club in term 4.
