Hello Robin Hood fans! Its been a while since I wrote in this magazine, as Robin Hood Athletic have been at the mercy of waterlogged pitches throughout most of December and January and consequently have had an unscheduled winter break! But before I give you the recent match reports, I must mention the sad passing away of the club President, Trevor Hackett, aged 72. Trevor was, devoted to the club, loved and

respected by everyone and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family. The first game back after a long break saw Hood start strongly and put some pressure on Horbury. Working hard going forwards and reading long balls well saw Hood looking the better team, but a corner saw Hood beaten though. Keeper Matty Smith slipped coming to collect on the wet, muddy pitch and the resulting ball was put away. Hood seemed to lose confidence, allowing increasing pressure onto themselves, and Horbury doubled their lead before the break. Second half saw Hood become more competitive and to a neutral the game was a decent display in poor conditions. End to end play from both sides eventually saw Hood strike the next blow, Matty Waller breezing through the Horbury defence this time slotting away - game on! And so the

battle commenced, last ditch tackles, goal line clearances, shots from distance and blocks/ saves all there. Smith made some fine stops at one end whilst Curtis Aston was called offside at the other, but Horbury broke away and regained their 2 goal cushion. Hood pushed at the end, Danny Claridge blazed one just over, Danny Bridges missed a 1-on-1 and the ref called time Hood were far and away the better outfit - the real task was to make that show on the field against 2nd Division Barwick in the League Cup. Strong performances ensured this was the case. Jack Fisher gave an early lead before Curtis Aston followed up a save to make it two. Jack again on the scoresheet before the break to hand Hood a 3-0 half

time lead after some reasonable passing and good vision, Scott Murgatroyd benefited after the break with 2 quick goals and it was game over as a contest. This was later to become a well deserved hat trick. A free kick which was taken quickly gave Barwick a consolation, although Matthew Gould also scored before full time. Away at Leeds City was a tough-looking fixture, but Hood rose to the challenge and matched them all over the park. Hood went a goal down - sloppy defending at a corner - before Scott Murgatroyd hit a PHOTO: Dale Pickering (8) against Barwick tremendous half-volley from way outside the penalty area to equalise. Leeds City then scored following a long boot up the pitch from their keeper, but the Hood midfield dominated the opposition for the remainder of the half with Dale Pickering working tirelessly between midfield and the lone striker and forcing errors. Good play from Hood resulted in Danny Claridge cutting inside and letting a shot go - the keeper failed to shove it wide and Murgatroyd followed in for a close finish. Hood were starting to control the game and this resulted in the best team goal of the day - a lovely ball through from Murgatroyd to Pickering who then cut back for the on-rushing Claridge to open his Hood account. 3-2 Hood. The 2nd half started in similar fashion to the first with pressure coming from the Leeds City wing resulting in a cross that evaded Hood but not Leeds City. 3-3. The fight was on and Hood took it to Leeds City. Claridge had a fine free kick saved, and should have scored a 2nd from a flick-on header going narrowly wide. Hood looked the stronger team - none of them wanted to get beat. Hood got a corner and following a sublime ball from James Finlayson, defender Chris Brown got the goal. - a perfect reward for a captain's performance. Hood dug in and held on to the end. A great result!
