Grow Your Own in AprilApril’s a very busy month - one of the most exciting times of the veg grower’s year. If you’re going to try growing some veg for the first time, now’s the best time to have a go – the soil should be warming up, the days are lengthening and the variety of seeds available is immense.

You can be sowing any of the root crops directly outdoors as can broccoli, cabbage and all other brassicas plus leeks, onions, peas and broadbeans. Sowing directly outdoors – whilst potentially risky with possible late frosts – can also save a lot of work (and space) sowing indoors and then transplanting later. It’s still too early to plant some seeds outside though. Courgettes, pumpkins and other squashes all need to be started off indoors this month, as do French and runner beans. Although, all these can be sown directly next month. Do both if you want to hedge your bets!

The wild garlic’s out now. Follow your nose, often by water, and you’re sure to find some – usually vast banks of it. The leaves are a lovely salad leaf. I planted a few bulbs at home in the shade under my apple tree so I’d have some always ready to hand (and could guarantee no dogs had ‘visited’ it). It’s taken really well, though I understand it can be quite invasive.

A few years ago I decided to have a bash at birch sap wine. Unfortunately, I didn’t collect enough to make any wine – only about a pint, whereas you need to roughly three quarters fill a demi-john. You need to catch the birch tree when the sap’s rising. I tried the end of March last time. I guess it’ll vary year on year but I’m off back into the woods – April this time. Have a look on YouTube if you fancy a go – there are loads of videos.

There’s a nice selection of veg you can be harvesting now – not least of which – asparagus! Start cutting them once they are the thickness of your index finger. My new bed yielded a crop of one spear each for my family last year – I’m hoping for greater things this year! You can also pick rhubarb, purple sprouting broccoli, spring cabbage and any cauliflowers sown last year and overwintered. You’ll be able to pick the last of the leeks and kale this month too.

mature movers! Held every Wednesday afternoon at St Austin’s Church, St John’s in the Thompson Room from 2.00pm till 3.00pm followed by

Wakefield Health Walks:The North Wakefield Group meet on Tuesdays at New Southgate Surgery

at Newton Bar. We meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start.The walks are approximately 4 miles long and are aimed at fitter walkers.

We walk locally around the Wakefield area and car-share to the start of the walk.You do not need a car in order to join our walks but, if you do have a car, we would be grateful if you could offer lifts to non-car walkers .Suitable

The Andersons 1940's Social and Dance Night at the Methodist Church Hall, Wrenthorpe Road, Wrenthorpe. Every 4th Wednesday in the month, starts at 7.30 until 10.30pm. Music played for

Ballroom, Jive, Strolls, Palais Glide, Barndance, Military Two Step and lots more dances of the 1940's. We also show films from the period above. Entry
