Grow Your Own in March March is a very busy month on the plot with plenty to sow, plant, prepare and even harvest. If you want to lay the foundations for a healthy coming year, maybe you should follow the advice of this old rhyme: ‘Eate leekes in Lide; and ramsins in May, And all the yeare after physitians may play’ (Lide being an old Anglo Saxon word for March). I don’t know if they have any greater health giving properties then all the other lovely organic home grown veg but they do taste lovely boiled and mashed with potatoes.

There are lots of seeds can be sown now, even outdoors: cabbage, broccoli, parsnips, peas and broadbeans can be sown directly outdoors and with a bit of protection from a cold frame or a cloche you can also be sowing: carrots, lettuce, beetroot and turnips. If you’ve already chitted your early potatoes (encouraging them to sprout by placing indoors in an old egg box with plenty of natural light until shoots reach ½ - 1”) then you can plant them out now along with onion sets and garlic. Once you’ve emptied your egg boxes you can put your maincrop potatoes in to get them chitting.

In my ongoing struggle to raise seedlings successfully indoors, I was advised last year to add perlite to the compost mix, which proved to be a great success. I lost far fewer seedlings to damping off (where seedlings wither & die for no apparent reason) and I’ll be using the same method again this year.

Another new venture for me this year is the cultivation of hops. Not content with wine I’m branching out into beer. I met an old chap on the ferry to Spain last year who after a working life spent in the Middle East and lots of illicit home brewing, since his retire-ment back to the UK had continued making his own beer and was flavouring it with hops he grew in the North of England. He said the plants were prolific and easy to grow. Most plants however are prohibitively tall but I’ve found a dwarf variety Prima Donna (First Gold) which only reaches 2 – 3 meters. Hops are a hardy perennial which can be planted out in early spring. The fresh flowers contain more and better quality lupulin which are glands containing all the bittering (alpha acids) and aromatic oil compounds which flavour beer. Cheers!
