We are pleased to introduce Morten Kristensen as the newest member of the Esco Medical Medical Team, based in Denmark.
Morten will support Esco in installations, trainings, service and maintenance of IVF equipment, mainly on Miri® TL Time Lapse Embryo Incubator. He previously worked with Fertilitech in a similar position for the past years servicing on Embryoscope. In addition, Morten spent a lot of time annotating embryos, why he for sure is the person worldwide having annotated most time-lapse movies (+12,000 cycles), which he also did while working in his previous job.
In his spare time, Morten is a dedicated hunting- and fishing-man. It’s not something that he shouts out loud, but he actually holds the world record for catching the biggest catfish, which he did during a project in Greenland a couple of years back.
Every addition to our family further strengthens our team and proves that Esco Medical is continuously growing having the most competent IVF products and highly qualified staff.
Welcome to the Esco Family!

When Severn Sales received an inquiry from St Brendan’s Sixth form College in Bristol to install seven ducted fume hoods into a new chemistry laboratory, they turned to Esco because of the need for a reliable supplier who could deliver a quality product on time and position the units on the base cabinets, ready for Severn Sales installation and commissioning team to install the fans and PVC extract ductwork.
St Brendan’s Sixth Form College was almost entirely rebuilt in 2009 to provide university standard resources in world class accommodation.
The college is located on the outskirts of Bristol, within a historic landscape, with very pleasant grounds, which are used and enjoyed by students throughout the year. As part of the capital investment, the College has ensured that its provision of technology is at the ‘cutting edge’. Equipment and software provided is the same as that used by higher education and industry. This focus on providing specialist facilities, dedicated to meeting the needs of post 16 students, applies to all the College accommodation. This makes St Brendan’s an ideal and enjoyable place to study.
All buildings have been designed to minimize the College’s impact on the environment, utilizing the earth’s natural resources, such as sunlight and rainwater. They are designed to minimize the carbon emissions whilst providing a very comfortable place to work and study.
The fans were installed on the flat roof of the college, towards the rear of the building where the visual impact would be minimal.
Esco delivered the hoods to site and the modern design and smart look of the finished installation were pleasing to both the contractor and the college.

Biosafety and biosecurity in different sectors, Esco 4P framework and how to achieve themLim Lay Yew
Human, Animal and Plant life and health protection of the Environment are inextricably linked and this is the fundamental rationale for an integrated approach to biosecurity. Biosecurity hazards of various types exist in each sector and have potential to move between sectors. For instance, animal pathogens affect humans and animal feeds can be contaminated by mycotoxins and plant toxins.
Esco’s 4P Framework
PREVENTION OF ENTRY/EXITIn research laboratories, biosafety level has been categorized from BSL 1 to 4 to protect entry and exit of pathogens and disease-causing microorganisms depending on the threats posed by the nature of the organism used for research purpose in the laboratory. The levels are designated in ascending order, by degree of protection provided to personnel, the environment, and the community.
Aircrafts and airports also are being “disinsected” for invertebrates: pests or vectors of animal, plant or human disease. Airports also use scanners for contagious disease carrying human hosts like Ebola and SARS.
PREVENTION OF GENERATIONEmphasis on eradication of diseases in plants , animals and humans to protect future generations from biohazards. In plants, prevention of generation includes crop rotation, destruction of the diseased plants, elimination of alternate host plants, pruning, disinfection, and heat treatments.
In animals, ensuring the existence of an assured capability for immediate response to threat outbreaks whether this is through using national resources or requesting rapid assistance from international resources such as FAO Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES). A combination of prophylactic vaccination and zoo sanitary controls to bring the number of outbreaks down to zero and maintenance of appropriate inter-country sanitary cordons until such time as there is regional concurrence that neighbouring countries no longer pose a risk of re-infection. In Humans, the eradication of disease, extinction of the disease pathogens and elimination of the occurrence of a given disease is of utmost importance. According to UNICEF, seven diseases have been under control due to vaccine. These includes small pox, diphtheria, tetanus, yellow fever, whooping cough, polio, and measles.
PURGINGPurging is necessary if the disease has high rates of morbidity and mortality; the disease is highly communicable and spreads rapidly once introduced into non-immune herds.
A quarantine or medical isolation is used to separate and restrict the movement of persons; it is a state of enforced isolation in connection to disease and illness exposed to a communicable disease. The word comes from Italian (seventeenth-century Venetian) “quaranta”, meaning forty, which is the number of days ships were required to be isolated before passengers and crew could go ashore during the black death plague epidemic. Quarantine can be applied to humans, but also to animals of various kinds, and both as part of border control as well as within a country.

PERSONNEL CONTROL AND MANAGEMENTThis involves utilizing human resources and making sure that: • They are equipped with technical knowledge and skills to carry out different biosecurity roles and functions • They are prepared to deal with emergencies in the event of disease outbreak and other forms of risk. • They strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) • They use the appropriate personal protective equipment, correct tools and laboratory equipment.
In achieving the 4P’s, ACCCG is necessary; attitude, communication, competence, commitment and growth.
ATTITUDEA correct mindset and attitude is the first important factor in achieving the 4Ps. The right attitude will create an objective that will benefit all stakeholders in different sectors. These benefits include how to improve regulatory and policy frameworks at different sectors (human health & environment, animal and plant sciences) both at national and international level, maximizing resources to achieve objectives and risk analysis and how to manage them.
COMMUNICATIONCommunication is the second important factor in achieving the 4Ps. Exchange of information should be channeled to all stakeholders including government agencies, non-government agencies, private sectors, national and international organizations/policy makers, scientific and research companies/personnel, and the general public. Each stakeholder must be open to communicate on how do they apply their health and environment safety, animal and plant regulations. Communication also improves data acquisition and shared practices among each sectors.
COMPETENCECompetent personnel/authorities should be responsible in establishing integrated biosecurity controls and to ensure that they are properly implemented and monitored by different sectors. Implementing national biosecurity should have human resources equipped with technical knowledge and skills to carry out different biosecurity roles and functions. Training practices, materials and programs can be shared across sectors which can give rise to technical exchanges between countries.
COMMITMENTCommitment is an another important factor in achieving an integrated approach to biosecurity and should be mainly driven by government agencies, national and international organizations, private sectors/different industries and the scientific and research community.
GROWTHHow to continuously GROW is another major challenge. This is the main reason why we need to establish the correct ATTITUDE first, so COMMUNICATIONS and information exchange are shared, we must also have COMPETENT authorities and human resources with adequate technical capabilities and COMMITMENT from different stakeholders. If all of these are implemented then continuous GROWTH on all sectors at different aspects of the 4Ps will follow.

Miri® TL advancing in vitro fertilization in SpainThe Human Reproduction Unit of the General Hospital of Valencia has been elected to participate in an international project in which they will test the leading technology of Miri® TL incubator for IVF. This project will take place in four European hospitals, one of which is the Spanish ‘’General Hospital of Valencia’’, the only Spanish one included in the project. As reported by the Government in a statement, the incubator has two “key elements” that makes it different from other embryo culture systems. First, is that the unit works with low oxygen pressures improving the cells’ development, and second is its time lapse system which allows them to take images every five minutes and generate a video of the whole evolution of each embryo as images are digitally stored.
Conventionally, the embryos are being removed from an incubator once a day and check their evolution under a microscope. This is a very critical step since the environmental condition could be changed instantly which may induce risks to the embryo development. Meanwhile, with the Miri® TL Time Lapse Embryo Incubator, images can be captured without causing any disturbance to the embryo. The temperature and pH are not altered while morphology is being displayed. Another advantage is the 6 incubation chamber, each allows individual cultivation of 14 embryos, thus can cultivate a total of 84 embryos in one run.
The birth of a child is a fulfillment of every couple’s dream, especially to those who are trying to conceive over the years.
At exactly 3:27pm, on the 18th day of August 2014, a couple became parents with the birth of a baby girl who was conceived through in vitro fertilization. These proud parents were assisted by Dr. Sascha Edelstein, an OB-GYN withsub-specialty training in Reproductive Medicine, at HART fertility clinic.
The clinic has been using the Esco Miri® Multiroom Benchtop Incubator which has been a temporary home for their viable embryos. The unit provides stable and appropriate culture environment required for optimizing embryo development because it offers reduced time spent in handling process of embryo cultures, and minimized disturbances during monitoring due to its completely separate chambers, a feature that is unique to Miri®.
The undeniable competence of the HART Team led by Dr. Edelstein and the outstanding performance of Miri® during embryo development resulted to another birth. A healthy baby boy was born on the 21st day of October this year.
Family success stories with the Esco Miri®

Esco’s Miri® TL Time Lapse Embryo Incubator and Miri® Multiroom Incubator have been approved by ANVISA for Brazil which gives Esco and its partners an opportunity to sell these medical devices and expand their business in the country. It is believed that with its mature healthcare system, Brazil represents the largest medical equipment market in South America and one of the largest markets in the world. With regards to assisted reproduction, Brazil has been very successful over the years. In fact, according to ANVISA, success in fertilization in 2012 achieved the average of 73%, which is inside the international quality standards which vary from 65-75%. In the 6th SisEmbrio Report (Embryo Production National System Report), there are 91 IVF clinics in the country.
Miri® TL and Miri® Embryo Incubators are two highly competitive products that can support the need of each IVF clinic not only to maintain but to increase the success rates of assisted reproduction in Brazil. These products together with Fertilisafe™ Multizone ART Workstation will be every embryologist’s allies in ensuring safety and integrity of each embryo during the process.
ANVISA’s approval highlights the quality of products that Esco manufactures and demonstrates the great efforts done by the people behind this accomplishment.
Cheers to Esco Medical Team for yet another big leap!

Miri® TL Time Lapse Incubator Miri® Multi-room Incubator
The company who is leading this project and is testing Miri® TL technology has chosen The General Hospital of Valencia due to the ‘’accredited experience’’ of the embryologist Irene Cuevas, Laboratory Manager in the Human Reproduction Unit. She has undertaken important projects for the development of high technology tools in this matter.
Cuevas stated, “Now, we will be able to know not only the rate of loss of events, we will know the whole process from the time that the embryo was placed inside the incubator until the time of transfer. Furthermore, we can now analyze which of the embryos registers the optimum features according to morphology and morphogenetics. This means a great advancement in embryology”.
Juan Gilabert Estelles, Manager of the Maternal and Child Clinical Area and Director of the Medical & Surgery Simulation Area in the General Hospital, stated that this technology will allow the Hospital to become a key reference for the study of the evolution of embryos as well as the best place to work for specialists in this field.
VIP treatment for cultured embryos in ARTIVF Incubators serve as temporary homes for embryos before they are transferred to the mothers. Hence, the environmental conditions inside the chamber should be stable to maintain appropriate growth conditions. The critical factors that affects the conditions inside the incubator includes temperature, gas atmosphere and humidity and these should be well regulated to ensure optimum embryo development.

It is our pride to share Esco’s expertise on biosafety and biosecurity in the 2nd Annual Conference held on November 29, 2014. The daylong seminar was organized by BBBA at the Microbiology Department of Dhaka University and attended by local and foreign scientists, teachers and researchers.
Lim Lay Yew, Chairman of Esco Group of Companies, gave a very informative lecture entitled “Biosafety and Biosecurity in Different Sectors, Esco 4P Framework and How to Achieve Them”. The lecture aims to enlighten the audience about how can we achieve the 4P Framework by Attitude, Communication, Competence, Commitment and Growth (ACCCG). The 4P Framework being; Prevention of Entry/Exit, Prevention of Generation, Purging, and Personnel Control and Management; to reduce or eliminate the risks of epidemics or threat to public health, safety and security.
In the November 30 issue of The Daily Star, a newspaper in Bangladesh, the highlights of the program were featured concentrating on how biosafety can fight spread of infectious diseases.
Here are some excerpts from the article:
The concepts of biosafety, biosecurity, and biorisk management are new in Bangladesh, but they have enormous importance in the present-day
world in fighting the spread of infectious and giving safety to laboratory workers, experts said at a seminar yesterday.
Biological agents including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins cause infection, allergy, toxicity or other hazards to human health and also pose threats
to economic development, social stability and even national security, said Dr. Asadulghani, President of Bangladesh Biosafety & Biosecurity Association
(BBBA), while presenting his keynote paper. Biosafety and biosecurity are defined as defenses against biorisks, or as the containment principles,
technologies and practices to prevent unintentional exposure to pathogens and toxins, or their accidental release and the protection of valuable
biological materials within laboratories, to prevent their unauthorized access, loss, theft, misuse, diversion or intentional release.
Referring to the recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, Dr. Be Nazir Ahmed, Director (Disease Control) at the Directorate General of Health Services
said, “Though we are far away from the origin of EVD, we and the whole world are under threat”. This type of threat can be faced with biosafety and
biosecurity, he added.
Esco values health the most, thus we support biosafety awareness seminars and conduct our own programs as well, to spread the knowledge and share our expertise on biosafety around the world.
Furthermore, we are continuously developing and improving our containment products to ensure the every laboratory will be equipped with the most efficient and safest product. Our biological safety cabinets will protect the scientists, researchers, and everybody working in the lab from biohazards.
We must act together to fight not only Ebola Virus Disease, but all infectious diseases that threaten the public; and by providing state-of-the-art containment products, and by doing biosafety awareness programs, Esco becomes the world’s partner in the battle against any infectious disease.

Esco Medical would like to thank our visitors at ASRM held on October 20-22, 2014.
The show has been great where we got to present our products. The Miri® Multiroom Incubator, Fertilisafe™ Multizone IVF Workstation and Miri® TL Time Lapse Incubator were displayed and gained attention from several attendees.
It has been a great opportunity to show the improvement in the system of the Miri® TL. Its unique features have been added with MiriContrast, a system which provides much clearer images; absolutely the best images in the market for time lapse systems. Furthermore, the software has been updated with a fantastic summary and comparison pages with fully flexible annotation parameters to suit every fertility clinic’s requirements.
Expect that Esco Medical will continue to improve each product and develop new ones as a response to the continuous changes in the needs of our clients.
