Industry is moving towards an integrated HetNet
• Small cells and HetNet critical for densification
• C-RAN, DAS, and all flavors of Wi-Fi, all part an industry-wide transition
• Macro becoming smarter

CARRIER REQUIREMENTS DEMAND AN EXPANDED REMIT
Virtualization of small cells
Smarter Wi-Fi integration – LAA & Wi-Fi calling

Small cells and M2M
Integration of small cells into 5G standards evolution
HetNet interoperability
Our mission is to drive the wide-scale adoption of small cells and accelerate
the delivery of integrated HetNets
In order to ensure our role in this journey is clear – we have evolved our mission statement
• Expanded remit reflected in current focus on virtualization of small cell layer
• Carriers need to understand how small cell roadmap aligns with centralizing and virtualizing macro RAN
Enabling future network transformations

• MAC/PHY well aligned with current small cell multi-vendor FAPI – Functional Application Platform Interface
• PDCP split also has potential, as some benefits are available with no transport cost increase
• Standardization of a transportable interface for the chosen split will establish a scalable ecosystem with interchangeability of remote and centralized parts from different suppliers – requires the development of a IP network transportable version of FAPI, or nFAPI
Release 5.1: Key findings
Announcement: Release identifies a clear opportunity to support an accelerated industry transition to virtualized small cells with a virtualized FAPI (nFAPI) based on a MAC/PHY split.
