Creative lampshades hung from the ceiling of the shed and the raised board was adorned with quilts and kitchen implements, reflecting this year’s theme of ‘What’s Cooking?’ Over 160 women, and a handful of gentlemen, were treated to a day of guest speakers, delightful morning tea, lunch and wine with a chance for some retail therapy as they wandered amongst a variety of market stalls, whilst socialising and catching up with friends. Well known Bridgetown author, Sarah Evans was the first guest of the day and spoke of her writing and parenting experiences. Don is passionate about Western Australian produce and took the opportunity to showcase some of the products on display by the stallholders in his cooking, inviting the stallholders to tell the story behind their products. For each event, Jacquie Broockmann has created (and donated) a painting specifically for the day which is used for the marketing of the event. This year, Rhonda Parker also donated a cooking themed wall hanging and Glenda Osterlund created a glamorous fish mirror to add to the auction items. In total $2,000 was raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA, with further funds donated from sales of packets of everlastings. As the day wrapped up and thankyous delivered, the crowd departed with smiles and feelings of inspiration. Event Coordinator, Erlanda Deas said “[The day] was a success with a lot of support.” She wished to thank the many sponsors and everyone who came for the day. Delightful Day for Women

For the fifth time, a local shearing shed was transformed into a haven of colour as a sea of women attended the ‘Storm in a Teacup’ Women’s Day, presented by Rylington Park and the Boyup Brook Co-op, on Saturday 19 March. Creative lampshades hung from the ceiling of the shed and the raised board was adorned with quilts and kitchen implements, reflecting this year’s theme of ‘What’s Cooking?’

Over 160 women, and a handful of gentlemen, were treated to a day of guest speakers, delightful morning tea, lunch and wine with a chance for some retail therapy as they wandered amongst a variety of market stalls, whilst socialising and catching up with friends.

Welcome to the April edition of The Boyup Gazette. I hope you all had a lovely Easter.

What a nice drop of rain we had to finish off the month, followed by some sunshine. Now watch those weeds grow!

It’s great to see a full calendar of events for April - there really is something for everyone. Best of luck to the winter sporting teams who commence their seasons in the coming weeks.

A note for all incorporated community groups, the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 comes into play from July 1 2016. There will be updates and information sessions about the changes in coming months, so please take note and act where required.

School holidays are just about upon us again, so travel safe if you are heading away. And on ANZAC Day, take a moment to remember our servicemen and women. There are two services being held by the RSL Boyup Brook Sub Branch, which are sure to attract large numbers.

Until next month

Cheers, Jodi

The Wilga Endurance Ride commenced in 1991 and has been successfully run annually, with only one cancellation since its initiation. The event is usually held the second Saturday in March and for many participants is the first ride of the season.

The Wilga Progress Association (WPA) organises and runs the event with the assistance and expertise of the Western Australian Endurance Rider's Association (WAERA) volunteers on the day.

WPA members set out and marked the course, manned the water points, provided sustenance for both horses and riders along the way, catered for the hungry hordes and their support crews, and attended to the general mountain of paperwork needed for such an event.

With three distances - 80, 40 and 25 kilometres, the event provides for all levels of experience, from novice to experienced riders, and those wanting a gentle introduction back into the sport.

This year saw 61 nominations, with most successfully completing the course. The unseasonal heat was a contributing factor for those who decided to withdraw.

Feedback was very positive overall, with riders commenting on the well-marked track and abundance of watering points.

Riders in the 25 and 40 kilometre event received a certificate of participation and a small token of appreciation for their horse.

Investment Planning and Patients Rewarded Whilst many things in governments, including your Shire Council, do appear to cost a lot for the planning phase and take a long time to happen, two fairly recent cases show the benefit of taking the longer view.

The State Government announcements last year of the sewerage scheme for Boyup Brook came about, at least in part, by Council’s continual lobbying and its preparedness to look seriously at doing this project itself. As part of the latter, Council partnered with the South West Development Commission and Landcorp to fund a pre feasibility study on a Council built and operated scheme for Boyup Brook. The consultant’s fee for this specialist task was in the order of $45,000. Council, together with its two partners, invested $15,000 into the study (a prerequisite for further planning and any grant funding). This $15,000 investment was one of the factors leading to the State’s current $6.7m investment in a Water Corporation scheme for Boyup Brook.

More recently residents may have seen announcement of success in gaining a Federal Government $2.45m grant for a bridge and that the Shire had to match this grant $ for $. Even more recently Council was advised that Main Roads would also provide $2.45m and so the community will get a new bridge to greatly improve a Shire Road. This project commenced years ago with the recognition that the single lane bridge over the Tone River, on Cranbrook Road, was no longer suitable for current traffic movements. In November 2012 Council resolved to invest $10,000 to get Main Roads to do a prefeasibility study

on a new two way bridge. On commencing this work Main Roads found that the need for the two way bridge was sufficiently great to warrant them doing the study at their cost. Council applied for a $309,000 Federal Government grant for the design and other preconstruction activities and in April 2015 was advised the application was successful. In June 2015 Main Roads recommended Council apply for a Federal grant of 50% of the estimated $4.9m construction costs. In February 2016 Council was advised that its application was successful. Whilst the thought of having to find $2.45m matching funds may have been daunting Council had been working with Main Roads on the project over time and was quietly confident of gaining matching funds from the State Government (through Main Roads). In this case then, the Shire Council’s foresight, tenacity and preparedness to invest $10,000, yielded $4.9m in funding for a new bridge to improve a Shire road that offers an alternative route to and from Albany, and is the subject of tourism promotion as a Bunbury/Albany link.

Patience Please This season has been, and continues to be, a difficult one for the maintenance of gravel roads within the Shire of Boyup Brook. With lower-than-usual rainfall in 2015, the winter rejuvenation of the roads (winter grading) was cut short last year, as moisture contents waned. This left many roads in a compromised position going into summer.

The Shire of Boyup Brook maintains 850 kilometres of gravel roads. In summer, two graders cut and remove material from the roads to render a smoother driving surface. This grading process is destructive to our roads as the road construction material ends up in a windrow on the side of the road, not on the wearing surface of the road where it is needed. The heavy haulage of rural commodities to and from our farms, at a time when roads are in their most vulnerable state, accelerates the deterioration of our roads, as does excessive speed and poorly maintained vehicles.

Our maintenance programme operates in an anti-clockwise direction and typically takes 3 to 4 months in summer to conduct a full circuit. Whilst we appreciate feedback from road users, drivers must be aware that the portion of gravel road they are using is generally going to be in a similar state to the section of road someone else is using. Calls for “urgent” grading of “their” section of road can be counterproductive, as the illogical, non-progressive programming of the grading will result in a poorer and slower service for all road users. Road complaints will be inspected, and action taken if necessary.

Road users are asked to please… slow down, be patient and drive to the conditions

A big THANK YOU to you [Adrian Price] and your team for deciding to make BlazeAid the recipient of the money you raised from your recent book sale. Another big thank you too to the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival their support of your book sale. As you are probably aware, BlazeAid is a 100% volunteer organisation and if it was not for kind hearted members of the community and groups such as yours, BlazeAid could not function. We do not receive any government funding so must rely on donations such as yours. Although we have fencing equipment ready for action in every state in Australia, it is quite expensive and needs replacement from time to time. Your kind donation will assist in maintaining and replacing this equipment. In addition to the Waroona base camp, we also have a camp operating at Grass Patch near Esperance and when these two camps eventually close, all the trailers and equipment currently being used at these two camps will be stored here in WA for future use. If you check our Website at blazeaid.com you will see there are several ways to donate to BlazeAid. Your donation will find it's way to the Waroona camp and will ultimately benefit the farming community. Thank you again, very much appreciated.

Brian Carr, Waroona BlazeAid Co-ordinator

Inspirational Horse Woman Shares Story Standing tall on the stage of the Boyup Brook Town Hall with two bronze medals in her hand, Sharon Jarvis tells how at seven years of age she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone cancer with three months to live and a twenty per cent chance of survival.

Sharon was here to tell her amazing life story to more than 100 people who gathered for an afternoon tea funding raising event to help Sharon follow her dreams to Rio as a member of the Australian Paralympian equestrian team.

Proprietor of IGA Boyup Brook, Anne Thompson said, “Over a staff morning tea discussion our inspiration to sponsor our ‘own’ Paralympian came from Cadbury sponsoring the Paralympics for $1,000,000.00. Sharon's groom, Emma Bardot, is a Boyup Brook local, and with Sharon coming from Brookhampton, we found a worthy recipient of a fundraising event.”

“I actually judged Sharon when I was a Hacking Judge quite a few years back so I have a ‘personal’ connection to her as well,” said Anne.

Sharon’s love of horses started when she sat on a rocking horse as a one year old and insisted on a real pony by age three.

Sharon was shattered twice when at horse events it was suggested that she might like to try out for the Paralympics. It was noticed that she was getting on her horse the wrong side. Her friend explained that she had a dud leg that was too weak to use. Sharon was devastated that people thought she was disabled! However, she soon turned this into a positive and set her sights on Beijing.

There have been many highs and lows in her life.

Her new horse from England was restricted entry as the Hendy virus and Equine flu had just hit Australia so by the time ‘Odi’ arrived she only had six weeks to train before selection trials. It was a steep learning curb to make the team. Sharon’s philosophy is, “if you want something, you need to go work your ‘arse’ off for it.”

It was her Dad who taught Sharon her second philosophy. On this day Sharon had to carry a bucket of water a long way to the stables so she asked her Dad to help. He took the bucket and tipped it over her!

“What was that for,” Sharon asked recovering from the shock of cold water. His answer was, “You have to work out how to do things to make them happen.”

Sharon said, “It was amazing riding into the Beijing stadium with a fantastic group of athletes, knowing my family were in the crowd and the Australian Flag was flying high.”

In Beijing the team was sitting in bronze position until the last contestant, a rider with no arms, beat them by one point.

“Fourth place was okay, but realising how close we had come made a burning desire to win a medal,” said Sharon.

Soon after Beijing, Sharon lost her Dad with a heart attack. He was her rock, mentor and guide.

Sharon was part of the team to win the first Australia bronze medal in the Paralympic section at the World Equestrian Games.

Unfortunately, with her horse injured Sharon had to give up her dream of going to the London Paralympics.

With the help of a syndicate she now has a new horse, is now in third place in the selection trials with another one to go and her sight firmly set on Rio. However, this is another amazing achievement.

“I didn’t even need to fall off my horse – I just turned – and broke my leg,” said Sharon. “I did everything right but after ten weeks, it wasn’t healed. I then had surgery on it and just one and a half weeks later I went for my first selection trial where I gained two firsts and a third.”

Sharon needs to raise money to pay for her horse’s quarantine period to be able to get him home from Rio. From the Afternoon Tea Fundraiser event, $5,665.80 was raised.

“For me personally it was a very inspiring day and humbling to see how generous our Boyup Brook community is,” said Anne. “Sharon was totally overwhelmed and gracious and hopefully this will help with the costs in bringing her horse home.”

Second Fox Shoot Planned

After a massively successful fox shoot in the Boyup Brook District in February having a second fox shoot was discussed. This will now go ahead on the weekend of 8 to 10 April. There will be no registrations or prizes.

“We will just have another crack at getting as many foxes as possible before lambing season kicks off,” said organiser, Rylington Park Manager, Mark Deas. “All are welcome to join us for breakfast at the Boyup Brook Pistol Club on the Sunday morning at 9:00am.”

Bring all the tails with for the tally and if you have an exceptionally big fox, bring the whole fox so it can be weighed. Cats and rabbits are always welcome as well.

For more info, call Marc on 0429 457 727 or Erlanda on 0429 375 609.

The Agricultural Society held its Annual General Meeting in February and although most positions were filled by the same willing people - why change a good team?!

President Tom Oversby retired, in keeping with his earlier announcement. And in keeping with Tom’s desire to have younger people holding office, the Committee were delighted when Sara Weir agreed to take on the office of President. Congratulations Sara.

Sue Titchmarsh has been elected Secretary and Harris Thompson has not only taken on the Vice Presidency but also will organise the Rural Ambassador competition – how’s that for an injection of youth!! - while Sue Emmerson remains Treasurer.

There is to be a slight increase in Membership and adult gate fees which will bring us closer to the average South West Show fees; the concession card and children entry fees remain unchanged and are still the cheapest in the South West.

The next meeting was held on 16th March with the main discussions revolving around the water system/supply and the need to replace the overhead power poles due to termites and asbestos lined meter boxes. These will be two huge projects both in time and manpower as well as cost. It is a bit ironical, that so much endeavour will be underground.

Possible changes to the cattle shed, the sheep shed and new cages for poultry have been suggested.

With the Centenary in 2018 there are lots of ideas for improvements.

The annual Sundowner was held on a beautiful cool evening with approximately 40 adults and children attending. Intended as a way of welcoming newcomers to our district, this is a lovely casual way to meet everyone – and there were several people new to town present. Well done Lisa and the team. The children enjoyed themselves playing with glow sticks in the dark of the hall.

Our next meeting will be on April 20th and will focus on changes to this year’s schedule. Everyone is welcome, likewise your ideas. If you can’t make the meeting, please let a committee member know of your suggestions.

UBAS Update

Student Leaders Grow

Boyup Brook District High School has developed a leadership program for its Middle and Primary school student councillors to teach them the roles and qualities of leadership.

In February, the student leaders travelled to Bunbury to attend conferences specifically designed for both Middle school and Primary school target groups.

In a full day of engaging activities, some of the topics covered were growing as a leader, being a positive influence, different leadership strategies and engaging students in activities and campaigns.

Primary school Captain, Brooke Nield said, “The conference was a great opportunity to develop my leadership skills and to discuss ideas with student leaders from other schools.”

Watch Out for Weeds after that, although this method may only be feasible across small areas.

The Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) also recommend a mixture of triclopyr, 2,4-D and metsulfuron in the early morning when plants are not stressed. Visit www.agric.wa.gov.au for more information.

If you’d like more information on this weed or many other common weeds found across southern WA, the BBG has the ever-popular Southern Weeds and their control, 2nd Edition books (J. Moore & J. Wheeler 2008) available for purchase for $30 at the BBG office, 19 Bridge Street, Boyup Brook. Designed as a hardy ring-bound guide, these books can travel around in your ute glovebox to provide a quick reference on weed species from grasses and herbs to trees and shrubs along with control methods and detailed colour photos. Come in and grab a copy for yourself!

For further information on melon control, please contact the Sally Peltzer at DAFWA on 9892 8504 or email [email protected].

If you’d like to purchase a copy of the Southern Weeds book or have any questions on weed identification, please call the BBG on 9765 1555, email [email protected], or drop into the BBG office at 19 Bridge Street, Boyup Brook.

With a large amount of summer rainfall this year, many of us are seeing a green tinge across our paddocks. However, looking a little closer, this may be due to those pesky opportunistic summer weeds.

So this year in particular, the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG) are asking all landholders to be diligent with their summer and autumn weed control which will assist pasture and crop establishment as well as productivity with reduced competition once the season break arrives.

The Paddy melon (Cucumis myriocarpus) and Afghan melon (Citrullus lanatus) are particularly problematic this year. Their growth is favoured by good moisture relations and bare or fallowed paddocks.

Horse, sheep and cattle losses have been associated with eating the melon but the smell of the plants generally makes them unpalatable.

These melons are spread easily and quickly through stock fodder such as hay or straw as well as by natural causes such as bird or native animal consumption and transport.

“This is why it’s so important that we all share the responsibility of biosecurity,” said Felicity Della Gola, BBG Program Manager. “Only then can we be certain of having landscape-scale impact in the fight against these invasive species.”

The best way to control melons is through manual removal, with regular follow-up checks in the Autumn and annual monitoring

What a busy yet wonderful start to the year it has been!

Our Aussie of the Month award kicked off in March with certificates being awarded to Hannah Ivey, Kiedis Barrett, Lucy Fortune, Sophie Thompson and Rachel Corker. This is a new award that will be given out to one student from each class each month for showing outstanding citizenship in our school community.

The annual big bash cricket night was a huge success with the blue team retaining the title for another year. Thanks to all families who took part and to the P& F for providing us with a yummy barbeque and ice creams for the kids. It was a great social night for all!

Our Year 5/6 class, together with Mr Tweedie and Mrs Voak, have been on their annual camp with Perth being the destination this year. They took part in various team building activities such as raft building, flying fox fun and swimming activities together with a visit to the Fremantle Jail, Scitech, ice skating and the movies. It was a delighted yet very tired group of students that arrived back at school on March 24. Thanks must go to the P&F who continually support this camp by

subsidising more than half the costs making it affordable for all students to attend.

The Pre Primary class joined the residents of the Boyup Brook Senior Citizen’s Lodge for some Easter hat decorating fun. The children were grateful for the senior’s help as they adorned their hats with feathers, rabbits, eggs, chickens and lots of sparkles finishing with a hat parade before singing “Little Peter Rabbit” and enjoying some morning tea.

Finally we would like to invite any teachers who may be interested in relief work to join our list. You do not have to have taught in the Catholic system. As long as you have a recent CV together with your TRBWA registration and a current Working with Children card we invite you to apply by emailing your details to [email protected] or ringing us on 9765 1333.

Cancer Support Group

A support group, originally for Breast Cancer survivors, is now open to women with any kind of cancer.

The Women’s cancer group meets monthly.

“Often when you are diagnosed with Cancer, even with family and friends around you, we still feel quite isolated,” said Fran Ryder.

The women who meet regularly are at different stages of their journey. By meeting as a group there is a sense of not having to go on this journey alone, there is that common interest to bond the group and the experience to help others along the way.

While there are sad and difficult times there are also many funny incidents that cause laughter and good results that brings happiness to the group.

“Everyone does come away mostly feeling they better understand their predicament, happy and energised because they have socialised with a great group of women,” said Fran.

For more information please call Fran Ryder on 0408 000 157 or Sue Wallace on 0427 653 114 or 9765 3113.

Garden Club Cuttings

Our Garden Club visit for March took us to the Ashbil Community Garden in Bridgetown.

We had an early start to beat the heat and we were given a tour and also an informative talk by Libby about each of the vegetables and fruit trees that were growing, many bearing huge amounts of produce. Many of the vegie beds are raised off the ground to prevent any contamination from the sites previous use. Some members were able to take home some produce for a small donation, mainly tomatoes, capsicum and chillies.

There were also silverbeet, pumpkin, squash, aubergine plants and also many herbs including comfrey, basil, thyme and oregano.

A composting toilet has been installed and the door was being put on when we were visiting. A pergola was also in the process of being put up, and will provide a great shady area for members and visitors alike.

A lovely morning tea was provided with home baked apple pie, and yummy cakes for everyone to enjoy. Thank you very much to Libby, Ingrid and John.

Our next garden visit will be to Fiona Thomas garden, Asplin Siding Road, Tuesday 12th April. Meet at 12.30 pm to leave at 12.45pm at Shire office carpark.

Business Partnerships

Ensuring that volunteers of community organisations have access to training and resources to improve their knowledge and skills is an important role for Clubs. Recently a Financial Management workshop was organised by Katie Drummond, the Shire of Manjimup’s Club Development Officer, Sport and Recreation.

To enable local volunteers to have access to this training, the Boyup Brook Community Resource Centre organised an internet link-up to the Pemberton workshop reducing the burden of travel and associated costs.

CRC Manager, Jodi Nield said “Being able to connect to this workshop via the internet was very beneficial. Often if they have to travel, volunteers are less likely to attend training opportunities like this. Being able to offer the session locally removed that barrier.”

Topics covered in the workshop included the importance of having a plan for future activities what funds may be required, budgeting and knowing how to read a financial reports, as well as the legal obligations for incorporated associations.

All participants were pleased with the workshop with everyone indicating that the information they gained would benefit the future of their respective clubs.

During the second week of January 2016, a lightning strike resulted in a devastating bush fire killing two persons, destroying approx. 160 homes and buildings, many thousands of hectares of farm land and hundreds of kms of farm fences.

At that time, BlazeAid was working in the Esperance district following their tragic fire. On 5th February, BlazeAid was ready for volunteers to help farmers in the Waroona-Harvey Shires, the camp being based on the Waroona Showgrounds.

I spent four days in mid-March as a BlazeAid volunteer, camping in my small tent and had forgotten about the fierce gully winds which come down the Darling Scarp causing me to have to buy stronger tent pegs. All meals were provided, in most cases by local townspeople, organisations and churches. Many shops also gave a discount to persons wearing BlazeAid identification.

All tools and safety equipment was provided for use by volunteers while working. Some farmers also used their equipment if it had not been destroyed by the fire.

BlazeAid volunteers at Waroona were from all states, some having worked at other BlazeAid sites resulting from major fires or flooding. The average age at Waroona camp was 55 years and at almost 78, I was the oldest. Those without fencing experience were usually allocated to removal of burnt out fencing and if they wished could learn to erect new fences. Each fence erection team was led by an experienced fencer after discussion with the farmer as to the type of fence required. Farmers provided fencing materials and in some cases this was a result in a delay of starting the project.

There may have been delays regarding insurance payout, or farmers having to borrow money for fencing materials. Some farmers were clearly still in a state of shock, perhaps unsure whether to move or rebuild and therefore had not yet applied for assistance. Ten weeks after the fire, farmers are still approaching BlazeAid for assistance. At present, BlazeAid have enough emergency fencing to keep them in the district until the end of April so long as there are enough volunteers.

Depending on the type of work, a team usually comprised 2-6 persons with a trained leader. Most teams had a specialised trailer containing the main tools for the work we were doing. There was no pressure to work beyond your “comfort zone”.

Arriving back at camp each evening, after a shower and change of clothes, many of us sat in the shade of a tree with a cold drink in hand and chatted about many things including the experiences of that day. We then moved in to the hall for dinner.

After dinner, Camp Coordinator Brian Carr asked for reports by each team leader or a deputised person. This helped to heighten our awareness that each day had made a big step towards recovery by a number of farmers. Brian Carr also requested of volunteers that they recommend help from an experienced counsellor to farmers who were struggling emotionally. In some cases farmers were invited to have dinner with us at the camp.

During the six weeks from 5th Feb – 17th March the progress data is as follows:

Number of Volunteers 187 Properties registered for assistance 106 (and rising) Properties where work has commenced 82 or 77% Properties where work is finished 39 or 36% Volunteer days 1176 Fences cleared 113.2 kms Fences rebuilt 112.7 kms

During the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival on 20th February, the Combined Churches of Boyup Brook held a second-hand book sale. $2,055.30 was raised and has already been sent to BlazeAid.

The BlazeAid slogan is: “Not just rebuilding fences, but helping rebuild lives”

It is likely that the camp will conclude at the end of April. Meanwhile volunteers and monetary donations are still needed.

Girl Guide News

What fun to be back Guiding!

There are new girls and a new Leader! Cheyenne Beagley, a former Guide from the Boyup Brook Unit has been welcomed with open arms. Cheyenne will commence her leadership training immediately but has already shown her capacity to relate well to the girls and get stuck into it.

Following the Country Music weekend, the Guides did a rubbish collection around the Flax Mill camping areas and almost found it difficult to find rubbish! Nonetheless, quite a few bags were collected. We offer our congratulations to all the townsfolk and the campers for being so litter conscious!

Unfortunately, there was little time to see the Flax Mill model but it did fascinate and there was so much more to absorb. It would be good if parents took the opportunity to visit the display and better explain this period of our town’s history to their families; arrangements can be made through the Shire.

The last two weeks have been occupied with Easter preparations. The Guides made chocolate moulds, Easter cards and practiced some knotting by making wooden crosses. Then little chicken baskets were made and filled with the chocolates before we all went to visit everyone at the Lodge and the Hospital to present our Easter gifts.

Plans for next term include a camp and Mother’s Day crafts.

The Commonwealth Government has announced details for the locations and time-frames of the 128 new and upgraded mobile phone towers being delivered across regional WA though the Mobile Black Spot Programme.

The $385 million program is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Government and the Royalties for Regions funded Regional Telecommunications Project.

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman said The Nationals WA had unveiled the location of the first 10 mobile phone towers under the Programme last month, and welcomed the full schedule’s release.

“Information on all 128 phone towers being built in regional WA is now online and easily accessible, so local residents can clearly see when and where mobile coverage will be improved in their area,” Mr Redman said.

“By the end of July 2016, the first 10 sites in WA will be constructed, with many more to follow over the next three years.”

Residents of Warren-Blackwood can expect ten new or upgraded towers in the 2016-17 financial year, with more to come.

Mobile phone towers sites scheduled for completion in 2016-17 include:

South Coast Highway, Peaceful Bay Tindale Raid, Bow Bridge Dinninup Eastbourne Road, Diamond Tree Jalbarragup Mount Pingerup Mt Burnside Mt Frankland West Nannup East South Western Highway, between Broke and Walpole

Mr Redman said the Mobile Black Spot Site Locator was an important tool in providing accurate information and transparency around the Programme.

“Constructing so many mobile towers across WA doesn’t happen overnight, and we understand there is anticipation around when and where these will be built, which is why it’s

Mobile Black Spot Locations Announced important to keep communities updated on the project,” Mr Redman said.

“The Mobile Black Spot Site Locator is a comprehensive but simple tool allowing communities to follow the rollout. It includes a map to let people search for base stations and information about expected timing, as well as information on the Programme and frequently asked questions. It will be updated on a monthly basis to provide up to date information.”

Mr Redman said there was significant work going on behind the scenes to help facilitate this major infrastructure rollout.

“There are many factors affecting when a site can be completed, including relevant Federal, State and Local government approvals, the scale and complexity of construction required, and whether or not new structures need to be built or existing infrastructure can be used.

“Due to these factors, the website will initially show the expected year of delivery for individual mobile towers, with more detailed information being added as the rollout date draws closer.”

“Royalties for Regions is playing a significant role in transforming regional WA and I look forward to seeing the digital divide in our regions being further reduced.”

In total, Royalties for Regions has contributed $85 million to improving mobile communications across regional WA since 2012, supporting the rollout of 266 new phone towers.

Visit the new Mobile Black Spot Site Locator at www.telstra.com/blackspots and enter your postcode to see towers in your area.

Dobie Doust’s Mill

This is about the transition period when sleepers were cut by hand using a broad axe and being cut by milling, in a timber mill. Although sleeper cutters were around long after mills were operating, milling eventually took over and timber cutters were employed supplying logs for the mills,

During the 1930s, Dobie Doust built a timber mill in Doust Street on the side of the hill, after where the road takes a sharp right hand bend. He sourced his supply of mill logs from mainly private property owners.

My father, who had been a timber cutter for many years, welcomed the opportunity to sell the mill logs and entered into contract to fell the trees, cut them into sleeper lengths and debark the logs ready for milling.

Dobie Doust had his own truck and driver, who also operated the manual winch fitted to the truck body to roll the logs onto the tray. The drivers name was Bert Bailie. I was only eight years old at the time and was amazed how the logs were loaded, especially when they were sometimes three high. As far as I can remember, the make of the truck was a Studebaker, but the conditions and the loads that the vehicle worked under were amazing.

The year was 1939 when World War II broke out and Bert Bailie left his employment at Doust’s mill to join the army. Dobie had two sons, Jack and Don. Jack took over truck driving. One day the truck arrived very early, and I can remember Dobie telling my father that ‘We are carting three loads today, Jack is getting married Saturday and we want to get a supply of logs to keep the mill going while he is away.’

Jack and Don eventually took over the mill from their father in partnership, but eventually the partnership was terminated. Don went farming and Jack continued milling, but shifted the mill to the sight where the rubbish tip is now located, and later again to Newgalup.

The Doust homestead was situated on the property opposite the cemetery turn in, now owned by Claire Diggins who has built a new house in front of where the original house was located. After Mrs Doust’s husband died, her and her sister, Miss Palmer continued to live in the house where Miss Palmer taught music to students. Although not ever being inside the original house I can assume it was a comfortable dwelling. Now in the year of 2016 the house has been demolished, if only those walls could talk, we would have access to a lot of history.

I am not aware when Jack Doust retired, however when I spoke with him last about a year before he died, he was running a service station/ deli in Walpole.

Poems by Chick

“A WEIGHTY STORY”

They say I’m gaining weight,

And put on kilos more.

So I can’t get back to what I was,

The time when I weighed before!

The Chef cooks up such wondrous fare,

Like sponges and cream puffs.

I just can’t tell myself, you know

That enough is more than enough!

My clothes are bursting apart,

And my slacks missing the seam –

But to give up on those goodies,

Would be such a wishful dream!

So when you see me happily munching,

Do not endeavour to take it away.

Just raise your hand to heaven,

And fervently, earnestly PRAY!

The Roman soldiers may have nailed Jesus to the cross, but what held Him there? The Bible gives us the answer: ‘For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.’

The reason Jesus didn’t call an army of angels to save Him, as He could have, was because He’d rather give up His life than give up on you.

We struggle to comprehend such a love because we’ve nothing to measure it by or compare it to. Nobody has ever loved us like Jesus, and nobody ever will!

And His crucifixion makes it possible for us to ‘come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.’ (Hebrews 4:16)

WA Criswell writes: ‘In a dream I saw the Saviour. His back was bare and there was a soldier lifting up his hand and bringing down that awful cat-o’-nine-tails.... I rose and grasped his arm to hold it back. When I did, the soldier turned in astonishment and looked at me.

And when I looked back at him I recognised – myself.’

In the film The Passion, people worldwide were moved by the hideous nature of crucifixion.

Underlying the story were two clear messages: (1) This was the price required to redeem each of us, a

price only Jesus could pay. (2) This is what we need to stop and think about each time we’re tempted to sin and disobey God.

Why is the resurrection of Jesus so important?

For two reasons: (1) His resurrection guarantees yours when you receive the free gift of eternal life. (2) If you live long enough you will experience the heartache of losing someone you love. Easter guarantees you will meet them again – alive, immortal, and just like Jesus.

Cricket Team Shows Potential

The Boyup Brook Cricket Team had a successful season for its first year in the Warren Blackwood Association, winning five home and away games and making it to the finals.

Unfortunately they lost the final but everyone in the team made an account for themselves and there is plenty of potential to look forward to for next season.

“Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the year and supported the team and we look forward to seeing you next season,” said President, Tristan Mead.

The 2015-16 season Windup and Trophy Presentation Night was held on Saturday night in conjunction with the 10 year Premiership Reunion.

The trophy winners for this year were:

Life Membership for Travis

The Boyup Brook Cricket Club inducted Travis Reid in as a Life Member at the recent Reunion celebrations.

A well deserved award, Travis has been an integral part of the Boyup Brook Cricket Club since he started playing in 1999.

In his playing career he played 164 matches, made 990 runs and took 188 wickets.

He has also been President of the Club, was a major instigator of having the cricket nets built and served several seasons as pitch curator.

Travis has been and still is a great advocate and supporter of cricket in Boyup Brook, avidly researching the history of cricket in Boyup Brook for the Reunion and has been an all-round valued club member.

Cricket Premiership Reunion

Forty people recently attended a Premiership Reunion for the Boyup Brook Cricket Club at the Football Clubrooms. This being ten years since they won their first outright premiership 2005/06 against Capel in Capel.

It was an impressive night for the Boyup Brook Cricket Club with the induction of Travis Reid as a new Life Member and new Honour Boards unveiled that list the Club’s player milestones and achievements since their inception into the Donnybrook/Capel Association in 1991.

Tristan Mead and Charlie Miller present awards to the current group of players, who are now playing in the Warren/Blackwood Association before Travis Reid gave an impressive talk on the “Origins of Cricket” in the district.

One of the Club’s all-time great commentators and statisticians, Scott Tweedie, throughout the course of the night, recounted both statistics and important moments of the five premierships that Boyup had won whilst being in both the Donnybrook/Capel and Donnybrook/Blackwood Associations.

Recollections from previous seasons’ Captains, Presidents and players, including Steve Brown, Tristan Mead, Michael Wright, Eion Gray and Michael Wallace were recounted. Brad Fairbrass, to the amusement of the crowd, rounded out the night with stories of some of the lighter hearted moments and infamous characters throughout the Club’s recent history.

“The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all and it was great for all involved in the Club to be able to celebrate what could be seen as the “Golden Era” of cricket in Boyup Brook,” said Travis.

Many thanks for all those who attended and to the following people for making it such a successful night; Mathew, Wendy and Tim Blechynden, Todd Atherton, Warren Pensini, Douglas Cumming, Brett Biluta, Women’s Hockey Club, Boyup Brook Co-op. Thanks also to Travis Reid, Scott Tweedie, Colin Hales and Michael Wright for organising the reunion part of the evening.

Tennis Tales

Open Tournament 100 entrants from fifteen tennis clubs headed to Boyup Brook on the Labour Day long weekend in March to play in the annual Boyup Brook Open Tennis Tournament.

The weather, being overcast and in the low 20s, was magnificent all weekend allowing some fantastic tennis to be played in age groups from 10&U to Over 55 Super Veterans.

Many visitors commented on the high standard of the grass courts which are well maintained by the Shire of Boyup Brook.

“Squeezing nearly 200 tennis matches into two days is no easy feat, but everything ran very smoothly and on time,” said Tournament Director, Jodi Nield. She added, “The family feel of the Tournament is special, especially when parents and children can all be playing in events across the weekend.”

Jodi also extended thanks to the event’s generous sponsors, entrants, supporters and volunteers for another great event.

A number of Boyup Brook players performed strongly over the weekend taking home trophies. For a full listing of event results and photos, please visit www.boyupbrooktennis.myclub.org.au.

Seniors The Loving Cup was played on March 12 with 8 pairs taking to the courts. This event, which has been held annually since the late 1970s, traditionally sees off-court partners teaming up on the court. In a great, relaxed day of tennis, the winners of the prestigious trophy were Jen Staniforth-Smith and Ben Murphy. Rest assured, permission was sought from their spouses to play together!

The final month of the season will be busy for members with the Doubles Championship to be played on April 2, Handicap Doubles Championship on April 9, Singles Championship on April 16 and Presentation Night on April 30.

The Annual General meeting will be held on April 9 following play and all positions will be declared vacant. Please consider nominating for the committee.

Juniors The junior season has come to an end with a competition day and wind-up on March 24. The development and enthusiasm of the juniors has been amazing this year after the Club invested in a twelve week program of professional coaching.

Around The Traps

On Sunday 28 February the Boyup Brook Clay Target Club held the “Terry Shine Perpetual Shoot” named in Terry’s honour as one of the Club’s Life Members.

Terry began clay target shooting 55 years ago at the Edgehill Club in 1958, ten years later after moving to McAlinden he joined the Boyup Brook Club. Terry was awarded Life Membership in 1999 at the club 40th anniversary. He has also has won the Club championship five times.

Terry always remembers the great camaraderie and the making of lifelong friends that combined with the friendly rivalry when competing in a shoot. But his most outstanding memory was the generosity of the members, who donated their time to raise money for the plant, layouts and buildings. There were annual balls held in the 70s, and donations of oats to the pool by the farming members, and contracts to pull up railway sleepers, all money going towards the purchase of the first automatic traps to be used in the South West.

Overall winner 50DB and 25double rise was Phil House from the Boyup Brook Clay Target Club

Have you ever wanted to try Golf? Do you have trouble getting to regular golf because of commitments with children? Do you have health issues, or time issues, that make 18 holes too hard? Do you dream of watching your little white golf ball soaring down the fairway, and dropping in that impossibly small hole in the ground?

We have just the game for you.

Boyup Brook Golf Club has a 9 hole competition for women on Thursdays. You will need to be at the Club by 10:30am, to commence at 11:30am. You should be finished by 1:30pm, and after a cup of coffee and a friendly chat by the fire with the other players, you could be heading home by 2:30pm.

There will be a senior player available when possible to offer some coaching tips, and assist with your progress. This could be a regular event for you, or if you find the game irresistible, you could move on to the full 18 hole competition in time.

For those beginners who are not sure whether they will want to continue, we can provide clubs to start out with. Starting day will be Thursday 5 May 2016.

Opening Day for the Ladies Golf Club is Wednesday 27 April, and this is a fun 9 hole competition to which all past, present and aspiring players are warmly invited.

Clean Clubs Program

Keep Australia Beautiful Council has designed a program which offers free bins and educational resources to sports clubs in Western Australia.

Littering at club grounds and sports fields can be a problem for clubs to manage. It is one of the most reported areas of littering Keep Australia Beautiful hears about.

The Clean Clubs program can help your club manage litter, encourage positive litter disposal behaviour amongst members and promote recycling.

Responsible sporting clubs are not only helping to create sporting champions but good citizens too. If you are interested in creating a culture amongst your club members that encourages responsibility for litter and a clean and safe playing field, then the Clean Clubs program is for you.

Register for your free bin and educational resources now by visiting www.kabc.wa.gov.au/get-involved/clean-clubs/clean-clubs-registration and for any questions contact 6467 5132.
