Movement on Telangana after Eid: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Un-ion Home Minister P. Chidam-baram Monday gave an assur-ance that “a forward movement” on the Telangana statehood demand will be made after Eid-ul-Zuha on Nov 7. The home minister’s statement came a day after three Congress legisla-tors from Andhra Pradesh quit the party to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) over the statehood issue.

“The (Congress) general sec-retary in-charge and the min-ister (Ghulam Nabi Azad) has told the groups that this is the

festival season -- Diwali and then the Eid - and let the two festivals pass. We can expect a movement towards a deci-sion to take place immediately after Eid,” Chidambaram said after presenting his ministry’s monthly report card for Octo-ber.

In a setback for the Congress in Andhra Pradesh Sunday, three of its legislators from the Telangana region quit the party and joined the TRS, accusing the ruling party of going back on its word on carving out a separate Telangana state.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) The UPA government seems headed for fresh trouble over the finance ministry note on 2G spectrum allocation that had led to a reported tussle between Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P. Chidambaram last month.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday tried to corner the government over the March 23 note that was circulated two days ago to members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probing the 2G allo-cation scandal, claiming the note had been tampered with in an attempt to suppress facts. It raised the issue at the JPC meet in the evening, when it said the note circulated to JPC members

had been amended by substituting the word ‘approval’ with ‘perusal’ that was in the note put up by the ministry’s ad-ditional secretary.

The issue has come exactly a month after a truce was brought by the gov-ernment between Mukherjee and Chi-dambaram, after the finance minister said the views expressed in the note on Chidambaram’s role in the 2G alloca-tion were not his.

The note sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) by the finance ministry in March had suggested that the 2G spectrum could have been auctioned, and not allotted, had Chidambaram, as the then finance minister in 2008, insisted.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal said here Monday that the government was considering suggestions for setting up a “standing tribunal” to deal with water-related disputes among states. He said the tribunal would have benches and the same court room can be used by various benches in rotation. The minister said the disputes could be referred to the tribunal.

Ahmednagar (Maharashtra), Oct 31 (IANS) Nationalist Congress Party’s Maharashtra unit president

Ranchi, Oct 31 (IANS) Jailed for-mer Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda Monday alleged his hand was broken by policemen when he sought good food for the prisoners.

“Poor food is supplied in the jail. I went to general ward to inspect the food and sat on demonstration to pro-test. I sought good food and my hand was broken by policemen,” Koda told reporters as he was being shifted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sci-ence (RIMS) for treatment. Accord-ing to sources in jail, Koda Monday went to the general ward to get food.

When he went there, chaos prevailed at the meal time and police made a baton-charge at the prisoners to dis-perse them. Jharkhand Chief Secre-tary S.K. Chaudhary said the incident, which has raised many questions over security of VVIP prisoners, would be probed. Meanwhile, political parties have condemned the incident.

Koda has been in jail since Novem-ber 2009 in a Rs.4,000 crore money laundering scam. He and four former ministers are kept in a VIP cell of the jail.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) A new electronic payment system, inaugurat-ed Monday, will usher in transparency in the way ministries and various gov-ernment departments pay their ven-dors and financial beneficiaries and will help in bringing down corruption, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here.

“This e-payment system will reduce the citizen interface by eliminating the beneficiary dependency on gov-ernment office and officials to hand over the cheque since the payments would be effected directly into their accounts,” Mukherjee said after in-augurating an electronic payment (e-payment) system here.

“A transparent payment trail would ensure that the entire payment process is trackable and delays can be moni-tored online. This would be a major initiative for good governance and would be an important tool in reduc-ing corruption,” he added.

The e-payment system, devised by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) will make transactions cash-less and make payments online into beneficiaries’ accounts in a seamless manner under a secure environment.

New Delhi/Mumbai, Oct 31 (IANS) Trouble seemed to be brewing again for the national carrier Air India as over 100 pilots owing allegiance to the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG), which represents pre-merger pilots of Air In-dia, have threatened to resign over alleged discrimination by the airlines’ management.

A letter sent to o Air India’s chairman and managing director Rohit Nandan seeked a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the pilots -- who have not been selected among those who will undergo training for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner (to be inducted in the fleet by December) -- to enable them resign. The trouble started when 64 pilots, 32 from IPG and 32 from Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA), the union of former Indian Airlines pilots, were selected to undergo 787 training in the US, which starts in few days.

Himachal project to get carbon credit in first for India

on public land New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Ahead of its 17th Conference of Parties in Durban late-November, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has registered for carbon credits the Rs.365-crore Himachal Pradesh Mid-Himalayan Watershed Pro-ject being co-funded by the World Bank. This is the first project on public land in India registered for carbon credits.

Under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change industrialised na-tions are mandated to meet targets of reducing greenhouse gas emis-sion responsible for causing global warming which was leading to cli-

mate change. If they are unable to bring down emissions, countries or companies operating in these regions, have the option of buying carbon credits from projects which have been awarded these credits by the UN clean development mecha-nism (CDM).

The Himalayan Watershed Pro-ject will thus accrue millions of carbon credits which will benefit about 5,000 families from remote and backward villages in the state, receiving revenue for the next 20 years from the World Bank for pro-viding green cover to 4,000 hectare barren land area falling in 10 dis-tricts.

Single ad for Sardar Patel, dozens on Indira: BJP

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mon-day lambasted the United Progres-sive Alliance (UPA) government for “belittling” the contribution of India’s first home minister Sardar Vallab-hbhai Patel by issuing “only one ad-vertisement” to mark his birth an-niversary while releasing “dozens of advertisements” in tribute to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her martyrdom day.

“It is a matter of great regret that UPA government thought it fit to is-sue only one formal advertisement to pay respect to Shri Sardar Patel while it issued dozens of advertisements in honour of Indira Gandhi. These efforts at evaluating Patelji in lesser light are unacceptable,” BJP spokes-person Prakash Javadekar said.

Patel was born on Oct 31, 1875 and Monday was his 136th birth anniversary.

Delhi property circle rates rise 15-250 percentNew Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) The Delhi government on Monday hiked the circle rates, minimum prices, for sale or purchase of real estate by 15-250 percent, with ex-perts welcoming the move and calling it "a step in the right direc-tion".

"The circle rates have been in-creased by up to 250 percent in A category colonies and 15 percent in the last category (H) colonies," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters after a cabinet meeting here.

While the circle rates for A category colonies, which include

Friends Colony, Nehru Place, Green Park and Greater Kailash, will rise from Rs.86,000 per square metre to Rs.215,000, those in B category will go up 100 percent, from Rs.68,200 to Rs.136,400.

The decision comes against the backdrop of a Supreme Court ruling holding the transaction of property based on power of at-torney as invalid. The move also aims at ensuring transparency and plugging the revenue loss to the government.

The government has also decid-ed to review the circle rates every two years, she said.

NATO ends its mission in Libya Brussels, Nov 1 (IANS) NATO Monday officially declared the end of military cam-paign in Libya, sealing of its seven-month mission in Libya.

“Today, at midnight Libyan time, a NATO Airborne Early Warning and Con-trol Aircraft (AWACS) concluded the last flight of Operation Unified Protector. With this, a successful chapter in NATO’s history has come to an end,” Xinhua quot-ed the alliance saying in a statement.

“On 1 November 2011, all NATO AWACS will return to their home air base in Geilenkirchen, Germany. All other air-craft, ships and submarines which contrib-uted to the mission will return home and revert back to national command,” it said.

NATO launched the Libya mission to carry out air raids, enforce a no-fly zone and maintain an arms embargo since

March 31, under mandates from the UN.In the last seven months, NATO aircraft

conducted over 26,500 sorties, including over 9,700 strike sorties that destroyed about 5,900 military targets.

The UN Security Council voted unani-mously to pass a resolution that will ter-minate Oct 31 the no-fly zone and civilian protection mandates last Thursday, while NATO Friday announced to end the Libya mission Oct 31.

The mission was terminated even though Libyan authorities have asked for the alliance to stay until the end of the year.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who paid an unexpected visit to Tripoli Monday, said that the alliance stands ready to help Libyans in the fields of security and defence reform, if needed and requested.

On Board Air India One, Oct 31 (IANS) India returns with a feel-ing of satisfaction from the Com-monwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, hav-ing managed to keep the 54-nation grouping focused on the develop-ment agenda, Vice President Hamid Ansari said on Monday.

Dismissing the general perception that the three-day meeting was a fail-ure because it did not accept the re-form agenda set by some countries, Ansari, who headed the Indian del-egation at CHOGM, said the Com-monwealth has been an organization

that has evolved slowly and could not be pushed into “instant” action.

“We reiterated our perspective on institutions - that we needed to strengthen existing institutions rather than create new ones,” Ansari told reporters on board his special aircraft on his way home, in a clear reference to the effort by some de-veloped nations to push through the creation of a Commissioner for Hu-man Rights.

From the Indian perspective, Ansari said, the delegation had achieved its immediate goals, espe-cially in getting CHOGM to back

New Delhi’s position on terrorism and piracy, and in getting Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma a fresh four-year term.

Ansari said that India would continue to support and strengthen Commonwealth Connect, a New Delhi initiative to increase infor-mation sharing among member-nations, and would also announce more scholarships under the Com-monwealth Scholarship Programme.

Ansari said he had a cordial meeting with Pakistani Prime Min-ister Yousuf Raza Gilani during CHOGM’s informal Retreat session.

United Nations, Nov 1 (IANS) The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said the admission of Palestine to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) may create funding problems for the organization.

“This is a decision by the member states. But as the secretary-general of the United Nations, I have to draw out to the members of the United Na-tions system this fact,” Xinhua quoted Ban as saying.

The Unesco on Monday voted to admit Palestine, even as the discus-sion continues in the UN Security Council about admitting Palestine as a member state of the UN as a whole.

With this, the UNESCO turned the first UN agency to have admitted Pal-estine as a member.

Palestine won admission with 107 countries voting in its favor, 14 in against and 52 abstained.

The US and Israel have voiced op-position to the UNESCO’s move.

On Monday, the US announced its decision to stop its financial con-tributions to UNESCO in response to their decision to admit Palestine before completion of bilateral nego-tiations between Israel and Palestine. The Israeli Foreign Ministry Monday called Palestinian accession to the UNESCO “a unilateral maneuver”

that would threaten Arab-Israeli peace talks.

However, Palestine’s Unesco mem-bership was welcomed in Russia.

Russia has however welcomed the decision. According to a senior Rus-sian official, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)’s admission to the UNESCO is an important step for it to become a full member of the UN.

“This is undoubtedly an absolutely correct and very positive decision,” Xinhua quoted Leonid Slutsky, the deputy chairman of State Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, as saying on Monday.

London, Oct 31 (IANS) Prince Charles has the right to veto any Brit-ish government legislation that affects his private interests, a media report said on Monday.

The Prince of Wales must give his consent on issues that could affect the Duchy of Cornwall, his 700-million-pound private business and Property Empire, according to documents ob-tained under freedom of information.

Because of a constitutional loop-hole, ministers had to seek Charles’ permission on at least a dozen bills, an investigation by the Guardian found.

Charles has been consulted on is-sues like road safety and the 2012 Lon-don Olympics as well as housing and planning reform.

This veto power was, however, dif-ferent from the “royal assent” - a con-stitutional formality that the queen has to give to all laws passed by par-liament.

Anthony Gueterbock or Labour leader Lord Berkeley said: “We should know why he is being asked and the government should publish the an-swers.”

The daily said Charles has in the past been accused of “meddling” in government affairs.

Inflation will come down by December: Pranab

Brazil to be world’s sixth largest economy in 2011

Kolkata, Oct 31 (IANS): The Calcutta High Court Monday permitted Tata Motors to appeal against its verdict validating the Singur land law but the petition could not be filed as advocates suspended work to condole a colleague’s death. The petition is likely to be filed Tuesday. The division bench of Justice K.J. Sengupta and Justice Joymalya Bagchi permitted company’s counsel Samaraditya Pal to file an appeal against the court’s deci-sion on the Singur Land Reha-bilitation and Development Act that scrapped the land lease given to Tata Motors by the Left Front regime for its small car plant.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Infla-tion will come down by December as necessary steps have been taken to remove supply-side bottlenecks, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here Monday.“Current inflation pressures are because of supply-side constraints of agricultural products,” Mukherjee told reporters here, adding the gov-ernment has taken steps to remove supply-side bottlenecks. “Steps have already been taken. I hope it will have impact and from November-Decem-ber onwards, the rate of inflation will be moderating,” he said.

Rio De Janeiro, Oct 31 (IANS): Brazil will become the world’s sixth largest economy in 2011 due to the global financial crisis that has affected the main eco-nomic powers, the International Monetary Fund and several oth-er organizations said. Accord-ing to data, which was quoted by local newspapers, Brazil’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2011 will surpass Britain’s, reaching $2.44 trillion against Britain’s $2.41 trillion and make Brazil the world’s sixth largest economy, reported Xinhua.

Court notice to CBI on charges against Reliance Telecom

‘India-Italy trade at 15bn euros by 2015’

Absence of decision-making biggest concern: Premji

India should focus on its young, say experts

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday asking it to respond to a plea by Reliance Telecom, seek-ing the quashing of charges against the firm in the second generation (2G) spectrum case. Justice Mukta Gupta, however, declined to issue immediate notices to other respond-ents named by Reliance Telecom -- the law ministry, the Department of Telecom (DoT), and Telecom Regu-latory Authority of India (TRAI). The judge directed the investigative agency to file its response within four weeks and gave Reliance Tel-ecom three weeks thereafter to file a rejoinder, if any. The decision to include other respondents will be taken on the next date of hearing

Jan 12. The Delhi High Court notice was issued when the bail petition of three Reliance Group executives - Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair - came up for hear-ing before the Supreme Court Mon-day. The trial by the special court is slated to start Nov 11. Reliance Tel-ecom in its petition had held that the special court of the CBI was wrong in dismissing its contention that Swan Teleco, one of the firms that had been issued a telecom license in 2007-08, was not an associate firm. “Reliance Telecom never held stakes in excess of 9.9 percent in Swan and that, too, was divested prior to the grant of licenses. No incriminating material has been indicated in the charge cheet or by the prosecution,” the company’s counsel N.K. Kaul ar-

gued. “The charges framed against the petitioner have no basis in law. In fact, there is no act or omission attributable to the petitioner that has been indicated in the charges that justify the continuation of criminal proceedings against the petitioner,” Kaul said. “The petitioner has always held less than 10 percent share hold-ing in Swan and has also been com-pliant with legal requirements, in-cluding the Unified Access Services Licenses (UASL) guidelines,” said Kaul. “For that, it is the admitted position that the petitioner had even divested itself of 9.9 percent shares held by it in Swan on Dec 5, 2007, much prior to issuance of letters of intent in Jan 2008. Thus, no benefit accrued to it from the grant of UASL to Swan.”

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): The government Monday said the trade between India and Italy will reach 15 billion euros ($21 bil-lion) by 2015, from a little over six billion euros ($8.50 billion) last year. “The trade between our countries last year stood at $8.50

billion (6.06 billion euros) and the data till August 2011 shows an impressive growth and reflects optimism,” Commerce and In-dustry Minister Anand Sharma said. Sharma said that he would encourage further cooperation between Indian and Italian small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“Earlier, the SME sector in In-dia used to be protected and for-eign investment was restricted in this sector, but recently we have

liberalized this sector to enable its modernization. Now, the SME sector is open to foreign invest-ment just like any other sector,” he said.

Sharma also stressed on the need for further cooperation be-tween the two countries in the de-

sign industry for textiles, leather products and footwear, where Italy is known as a world leader. In another development, a memo-randum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the two coun-tries which envisages an India-It-aly Business Forum for furthering cooperation in sectors such as au-tomobile, infrastructure, agro-in-dustry, pharmaceuticals, tourism, manufacturing and information communication technology.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): As the world welcomed the “symbolic” sev-en billionth babies Monday, social experts said that India should stop worrying about capping the popula-tion and focus instead on the needs of the young. Abhijit Das, director of Center for Health and Social Justice, said, “One cannot say the impact of this seven billion mark will affect the globe equally.” “We do not have a real time number of the population. So, it can’t be guessed who is the seven billionth baby. The pattern of population growth varies distinctly across the globe, so we cannot say that effect of the growth would be similar for the world. In Europe, the population is shrinking,” Das told IANS. He feels that India should cel-ebrate its young people. “Our policy making should focus on the needs of the young. Let’s stop worrying about capping the population because we

cannot do that.” A girl child named Nargis born in

a village in Uttar Pradesh Monday was declared as the “symbolic” seven

billionth baby. Ajay Kumar and Vinita, the proud par-ents of the girl, are natives of Danaur village in the state.

India started experienc-ing rapid demographic transition since the 1980s. Due to this, a demographic window of opportunity is being experienced by the country in the form of a “youth bulge”. “The youth bulge is not going to last forever. The growth rate in working ages witnessed a peak around the year 2000 in comparison to the over-all dependent growth rates. The effect of youth bulge

would be felt till 2025, subsequent to which, the growth rate of the elderly is likely to take over and peak after mid 2040s,” said a UNFPA report.

Bangalore, Oct 31 (IANS): Absence of decision-making among the lead-ers in the government is the biggest concern, Wipro chairman Azim Premji said Monday. “The biggest concern is over the governance is-sues. There is complete absence of decision-making among the lead-ers in the government,” Premji told reporters here at a press conference on the IT bellwether’s performance during the second quarter (July-Sep-tember) of this fiscal (2011-12). On the response to the second ‘open let-ter’ by a group of prominent persons, including industrialists to national

leaders on governance deficit, Premji said the reaction of the prime minis-ter (Manmohan Singh) was positive in terms of taking it on record. In the second letter Oct 10 to the leaders, the industrialists, including Prem-ji, Keshub Mahindra and Deepak Parekh, expressed concern over a series of scams. In the first letter Jan 17, the group brought to the notice of the prime minister and other leaders four major issues - growing govern-ance deficit, galloping corruption, urgent need to distinguish dissent and disruption and environmental challenges.

MAITREYA KOTECHA BREAKS IN BIG

How difficult is it to break the jinx of the industry that likes it all perfect? “It is definitely a hard task. How-ever, under the guidance of his mentor Ritika Ramtri (a well-known grooming expert from Mumbai), Maitreya is working hard on grooming himself and has also lost about 20 kg’s to be in shape that one can relate with models” she adds.

Stepping ahead slowly to realize his dreams , Kote-cha has done two ad films for Nokia and Close-up, with famous fashion photographer Vivek Das Gupta, that

were sent to New York film Festival ’10 and London Film festival’10 respectively for two different brand contests.

However, in India the big break for this young aspir-ant came when he walked for fashion designer Aslam Khan, in the finale of Pune International Fashion Week last year. “He could not hear the music but was in com-plete sync with other models on the ramp, and no one knew that he has any physical deficiency” conveyed the proud mother of this young and inspirational boy.

BBC- UK, two years ago produced a reality show; Brit-ain’s Missing Top Models, wherein, they called upon girls who had physical impairments to compete for modeling contracts. While the winner, Kelly Knox, had a forearm missing, one of the contestants from the show Debbie Van Der Putten, has been featured on the cover page of the Playboy magazine, a perfect frame for someone to aim for.

The Indian fashion industry too seems to have under-stood the need to give people who are differently abled a chance to make it in the industry.

All of 21, Maitreya doesn’t want people to treat him any different or as a special case. All this Pune based model aspires for is to be recognized by what he has, not what he doesn’t have, by his talent and not his physical im-pairments.

Would love to work with SRK: 'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart

New Delhi, Oct 30 (IANS) Holly-wood's fascination with Bollywood stars continues. And the latest to join the list is ‘Twilight’ actress Kristen Stewart, who is a huge fan of super-star Shah Rukh Khan. She calls him an ‘epitome of romance’ and says she would love to work with him.

"Well, I am a big fan of Shah Rukh Khan who is an epitome of romance in Bollywood," Stewart said in an e-mail interaction.

She said if given a chance, he would be the one with whom she would love to do the second part of her movie "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn".

"And not just Hollywood but I would love to work with him in Bol-lywood movies too and for that I am also looking forward to learning Hin-di," said the 21-year-old actress who rose to fame with her role as Bella Swan in the vampire saga "Twilight".

"I have also seen the promos of his latest movie 'Ra.One' which are very impressive and I just loved his look in the movie. He is truly an inspiration to me," she added.

"Twilight" film series is based on four books written by Stephenie Meyer.

The first part of the last instalment of the series "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" is set to hit the screens world-wide Nov 18. And the actress calls her journey "beautiful".

"The journey has been amazingly beautiful for me. I feel like Bella her-self now and on the sets I found (beau) Robert Pattinson. So my journey has

romance and fun," Stewart said."Everything is only moving ahead

and becoming bigger. It is a bigger movie now and also with a huge fan following. Every moment has been a fun moment and there isn't anything that I or anybody else would detest," she added.

The actress said she has grown as an actor over a period of three years and wants to do good work every day.

"Certain scenes need spontane-ity but most of the time I am (a) me-thodical actor, I keep looking for logic in everything I do and think and act. My effort is only to perform better every day," said Stewart, who calls ac-tress Jodie Foster her idol.

Stewart has been dating co-star Pattinson ever since they started working together and have happily endured media spotlight. However, marriage is not on cards anytime soon.

"I really have no clue about how to manage; so much of my life is easily googled. As far as marriage is con-cerned I think we are both too young to think on those grounds," she said.

She admitted that it felt awkward shooting intimate scenes with her real life boyfriend for the film.

"I guess it would be awkward if there were cameras present, wouldn't it? There's times when there's weird close-ups. In the end, I didn't feel like we had filmed an intimate scene be-cause we were both so uncomfortable and insecure," she said. Sandeep Verma

“He was five month old when he was hit by Pharyngitis, which resulted in losing his speaking and hearing powers. But as a growing child he always had this admiration towards fashion magazines and fashion shows that would come on TV. He shared his dream of making it to the show biz, and I decided to support him irrespective of the obstacles that I knew we would have to face” says his mother Malati Kotecha (serving as an interpreter).

This is the story of a dreamer and achiever; Maitreya Kotecha who has finally broken into the big league and has been shortlisted for Gladrags Manhunt 2011. Defying the odds this lanky model is a perfect example for the ones who believe that hard work always pays off!

Cryopreservation: A Medical Marvel Cryopreservation is a scientific process through which cells or tissues can be preserved by freezing them at extremely low temperatures of 77 Kelvin or -196 ˚ Celsius. It is an important area of science because of its numerous practical applications. Cryopreservation is used to freeze vital and useful tissues like blood, stem cells, samples of tumors and

histological cross sections, human eggs (Oocytes), embryos, sperm, ovarian tissue and plant parts for study.

History of Cryopreservation

How it works

Freezing cells or tissues tradi-tionally causes damage due to tears caused by the formation of ice crystals. However this concern was alleviated when it was found that glycerol protects cells from freezing damage. This discovery greatly broadened the scope of cryo-genics, especially in the area of reproductive science and medicine. Intracellular freez-ing is more susceptible to dam-age that extra-cellular freezing; though it can be minimized by employing a slow cooling process.

At very low temperatures, the biological activity of a cell that will eventually lead to its death is stopped. Thus, cells like human eggs or sperm and stem cells can be preserved for later use. Chemi-cals known as Cryoprotectants are added in high concentrations to ensure minimal ice formation on cooling. Till 2005, vitrification (freezing) rates for transforming pure water to glassy surface were considered impossible to obtain. Cryogenic stor-age ensures that cells have an indefinite longevity. Extra cold and industrial strength deep freezers and refrigerators are sometimes used for this purpose; ultra cold liquid nitrogen at -196°C is most efficient for important and complex tissues. Machines using the SPF or Slow Programmable Freezing Technique are used worldwide to freeze biological samples using pre-programmed and slow steps. This preps them before immersion in liquid nitrogen.

Cancer Treatment: People diagnosed with chemotherapy or other chemical treatments no longer have to be denied a chance at motherhood or fatherhood. Often, after cancer treatment (particularly cervical and testicular cancer) fertility rates go down. They can bank or store their eggs and cells through cryopreservation. Those who are aware of this procedure can choose to get it done before treatment starts.

* Human embryos and sperm can be preserved for IVF or in vitro fertilization. Approximately 20% of all IVF babies are born through cryopreservation techniques.

* Cryopreservation is used to preserve plant seeds and tissue. Seeds of endangered or rare plants are preserved for research as well as regenerative purposes. In the event of a plant or crop disease, the preserved specimens will be

useful for finding a cure.* Special blood cells may be preserved

for blood transfusions.* Natural Cryopreservation occurs

in multi cellular organisms known as Water Bears at a microscopic level. They can escape freezing temperatures by replacing their internal water with a sugar solution that acts as anti-freeze, much like chemical Cryoprotectants.

Vitrification of the brain is a hot topic in the area of Cryopreservation. Erstwhile thought to be impossible due to the many complications involved, it’s now on the cards. If successful, it could mean huge implications for mankind and the treatment of brain disorders. However, it is too new to discuss in detail. Thus, Cryopreservation is one of the most rewarding scientific and medical discoveries with a lot of future potential.

March 21 - April 19Aries

It’s time to move it move it!

People often talk about something called ‘the bigger picture’. We can’t physically see this, it doesn’t exist. We can only imagine what it looks like. To see beyond any situation requires imagination and some degree of shrewdness. It’s important you see real potential behind an idea or plan. Your keenness to bring about a result now could be causing you to overlook what might be attainable if you applied imagination and allowed a bit of time for it to happen.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

You can’t please everyone all of the time. Why should you be so determined to please everyone anyway? It’s probably become clear recently that, as result of placating certain people, you’ve compromised what really matters to you. It’s time to take a stand. The time is perfect to address what matters most to you, how you’re going to start achieving it and to what extent others must accept your decisions.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

What must you prove? In what way do you believe you must justify yourself? You could be considering making grander gestures than are necessary to do either. You’re feeling reas-sured with developments you’ve long wanted to see happen. Perhaps, through feeling inclined to display your relief, you feel it nec-essary to impress a person or organization. Understand that they’re willing to support you regardless of how much you believe you must do this.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

Sometimes, wonderful things come in small packages. We have all learned at some point that the biggest gift is not always the best one. You could be tempted now to pursue an option that, at first glance, appears much more impressive and attractive than a seemingly insignificant one. A wise decision will involve accepting ‘bigger is not always better’ where both options are concerned.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

Some people will do anything for an easy life. They don’t like to be seen to be instrumental in changing anything. They don’t want fingers pointed their direction by thinking differently or instigating change just for the sake of it. You can choose now to say or do nothing in the knowledge that this will meet with others’ approval or you can defend a viewpoint that you know will meet with disapproval. The latter promises you will receive respect for doing so.

The sky speaks clearly of something called the ‘boomerang effect’. In other words, what you give or effort you make is returned in some way. Think about how, when we greet strangers by saying ‘Hello’ or ‘Good morn-ing’, they reply similarly. If we greet them by saying ‘Good morning, what a lovely morning it is’, they usually reply with more than one or two words. You can control an important dialogue now. A positive outcome relies entirely upon how positive you’re willing to be.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

When I last travelled on a transatlantic flight, I was in awe of how the aircraft managed to travel at such speed given its weight and the weight of fuel, passengers and baggage. I mentioned this to a friend later who replied ‘It’s no wonder they make such a mess when they crash’. You’re encountering similar levels of negativity where someone you know is concerned. If they understood what is motivating and inspiring you, they’d be less contradictory and uncooperative.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

We’re told that, if something is worth having, then it’s worth fighting for. It’s easy to take this to extremes sometimes. We all recognize that we must give effort toward making something happen but when effort becomes replaced with obsession, we can forget our reasons for wanting to do something in the first place. You don’t need to focus solely on getting a result now. The process of achieving it can be just as rewarding.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

Children learn from very young ages to ask for what they want in different ways. Throwing a temper tantrum will sometimes achieve results. Asking for something in the nicest, sweetest way also works occasion-ally. Much depends on their ability to gauge the mood of the person they’re asking. You can make progress with a certain stubborn individual if you ask for something in the right way. This has much more to do with sweetness than it does a temper tantrum.

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

For much of 2011, you’ve been left to your own devices to pursue a plan of some kind. Where certain individuals have been very quick to make demands of your time and abilities, they’ve been equally slow to lend a hand. You’re approaching a period now that will involve others recognizing respect you are owed. Discussions might not all be plain-sailing but they will result in reaching agreement in areas you’ve been quietly concerned about.

A situation that has repeated itself, showed no signs of change and taken up much time and energy needs to be addressed and caution you’re applying to changing it is understandable. It’s natural that you anticipate a negative response or result however a small gesture of faith on your part will bring about a more than satisfac-tory change.

Having a regular skin care regimen can greatly improve the health of your skin. You should always consult a dermatologist before you start following any skin care tips and any skin care regimen and in case

you already have a skin problem or have developed a new skin problem.

You should to invest in skin care products that cater to your skin needs, skin type and your skin concerns. Before you start following any skin care regimen or start using any skin care product, it is important to consult a dermatologist or a skin

care professional in order to know about your skin type, skin concerns and skin needs. Once you know that, you will be able to choose the right kind of products for your skin accordingly. This is important because not every skin care product suits everyone. In fact, all the skin care products specify the type of skin and skin concerns they cater too.So you should choose appropriate skin care products and use them properly.

You should make it a habit to practisean appropriate skin care regimen regularly. Only by being consistent will your skin begin to show signs of improvement.Find a good cleanser that works for your

skin and make sure to gently massage it into your skin to get rid of dirt, surface debris and oils. Always make sure to rinse thoroughly so you don't have any residue left on your skin.Cleanse your skin regularly approximately 1-2 times everyday. A very effective skin care regimen helps in getting rid of the dirt and other harsh elements

from your skin. Cleansing is especially important when you have been out of

your house (and exposed to pollutants, dust etc). Use luke warm water for cleansing (both hot and cold water may be harmful your skin)

Choose an appropriate toner for your skin. A good toner will help control shine, tighten pores and decrease the oiliness on the skin. Apply toner after you have properly cleansed your skin.

Moisturizer helps keep the skin smooth, soft and youthful. Dryness causes the outer layer of your skin to break, leading to a rough and unattractive appearance. Use appropriate moisturizers or emollients as per your skin type, skin needs and skin concerns. Moisturizers work best when applied while the skin is still damp.Moisturizing is key to not only keeping your skin from getting dry but they also help to prevent the onset of premature wrinkles and fine lines. When the skin is dry, it becomes vulnerable to the formation of creases and ultimately, wrinkles.

Exfoliation can cause dull, flaky skin to become smooth, supple

and vibrant.Once to twice a week you should exfoliate to rid your skin of dead skin cells. This helps to make way for new, vibrant cells to come through. Make sure to choose a scrub that is gentle enough and won't irritate your skin.Be gentleto your skin. Don’t scrub or exfoliate too hard or too often. Avoid the use of soap on your face.

Drink a lot of water. This will not only keep your skin moist but will help in overall upkeep of your health (and in turn your skin).

Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.Eating the right foods will result in clear and healthy skin. Start incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. Take appropriate daily multivitamins as well. These provide essential nutrients that you may be lacking in the foods you eat.Appropriate exercise and good sleep are essential too, not just for skin care but for your health as a whole.Beat the stress. Stress harms your skin too. So, take some time away from your worries and engage in relaxation practices like meditation etc.

Always use an appropriate sunscreen properly to protect yourself from harmful UV radiations. You can use day-time moisturizers that have sunscreen built into them if you are indoors. However if you are

going out, always put on a sunscreen with an SPF of atleast 30 or higher before going out. Choose a skin friendly sunscreen that is preferably water based. Choose products that provide broad-spectrum protection, preferably products that protect

from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Always apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun and reapply the sunscreen as required.

Don't forget your lips. Lips are sensitive, and they require special protection. For protecting the lips, use lipstick or lip

balm with an SPF. If you sweat a lot, apply a water-resistant or waterproof sunscreen. Use a sunscreen even when it’s cloudy.

Captain Clarke has team's support: Hussey

Melbourne, Oct 31 (IANS): Australia batsman Michael Hussey says the present cricket squad is happy with captain Michael Clarke's leadership and is fully behind him.

The Australian skipper has re-ceived some unwanted publicity in recent days after former opener Si-mon Katich suggested he played a big role in his axing from the Test squad.

Clarke and Katich were involved in an infamous spat 2009.

Hussey, however, insists the players are happy to play under Clarke.

"If you want to be part of this Aus-tralian team, you've got to go with the captain and we respect the way he wants to take the team," Hussey was quoted as saying in Sky Sports.

"We do want to play under Michael and I think we're definitely going in the right direction."It's been great for him personally - he's really taken the role with a full head of steam. He's very passionate about the role and he's very clear in how he wants to lead the team."

Australia is fresh from a 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa and now are focusing on the longer format of the game as they will play two Tests against the Proteas in Cape Town and Durban.

Edwards focused on winning it for West Indies Dhaka, Oct 31 (IANS/CMC): West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards has hailed his 11th five-wicket haul in Tests but says his focus is on ensuring the Caribbean side emerge victori-ous in the second Test against Bangladesh.

The 29-year-old Barbadian bowled with hostility to liven up a previously benign pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, finishing with five for

58 to bowl out Bangladesh for 231 in reply to the West Indies' 355 all out.

The West Indies were 207/3 in their second innings, a lead of 331 runs.

"It always feels good to get five wickets in a Test match innings. With the total we put up on the board, it gave me the encour-agement to run in and be really aggressive," said Edwards in his 48th Test.

London, Oct 31 (IANS): McLaren-Mercedes boss Mar-tin Whitmarsh is concerned with the heavy schedule as the next year's Formula One calen-dar could see record-breaking 20 races.

Whitmarsh feels 20 races in a year will put an intolerable strain on crews and drivers. Whitmarsh, who is also the chairman of the Formula One Teams' Association, believes

that the crammed schedule is all about money.

"Twenty races and a lot of fly-aways are pretty hard on the team, and we're at the tip-ping point. We shouldn't have any more than 20," the McLaren team principal was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Whitmarsh feels Formula One should look at adopting a crew rotation system that is em-ployed in NASCAR.

"We're getting close to the point where you do need to al-ternate crews, like in NASCAR," he said.

"Obviously, the world cham-pionship is important, but every Grand Prix as a stand-alone event is very special. I know there is always the chase of money, but 20 is a lot and we're right on the limit of what we should be.”

Bindra had won the only indi-vidual Olympic gold medal for India at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Bernie Ecclestone (R). Buddh Circuit Track

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS): Rid-ing on the stupendous success of the inaugural Formula One race in the country, the organizers, Jaypee Sports International (JPSI), wants to turn the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) into the hub of mot-orsports in South Asia.

The BIC received an instant thumbs-up from the Formula One stars, that can't wait to return next year for the second race. JPSI in-vested $400 million for building the infrastructure for the race and to get the license from the FIA world

body to host the Grand Prix event.JPSI's managing director Sameer

Gaur said the group is planning to host several support races ahead of next year's Formula One.

"We have plans for several races in a couple of months," he said.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said India should be proud to have organized such a suc-cessful race.

"India should be very proud that a private enterprise has achieved this. Everything is super; it just needed a little bit of polish. It needs

to be tidied up which doesn't take time," he said.

Double world champion Sebas-tian Vettel said the organizers have done a great job to build the circuit in quick time.

"What the people did here in the short amount of time to put up this arena is incredible. All in all it was fantastic and I'm very proud to be the first winner here. We are still hungry, we are not lacking motiva-tion. I love what I do and we don't want this (season) to end," said the Red Bull driver.

Team bosses ask Hamilton and Massa to end feud

London, Oct 31 (IANS): Bosses of McLaren and Ferrari have asked Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa to sort out their differences after they clashed for the sixth time in the sea-son during Sunday's inaugural Indi-an Grand Prix.

At turn five of lap 24, Hamilton at-tempted to pass Massa on the inside

and the Brazilian turned into him. The stewards for the first time in the season favored Hamilton by giving Massa a drive-through penalty.

Ferrari's team principal Stefano Domenicali said: "We can sit down together and play cards but it will not solve the issue. One thing that is crucial in my view is that we need

to make sure there is a coherent ap-proach from the stewards about things that happen on the track."

"We cannot avoid the fact there were a lot of kisses between them on the track. We cannot have these things being bigger than they are be-cause they will be on the mind of the drivers, which is not good."

Ecclestone backs Qatari consortium's bid to take over Silverstone

London, Oct 31 (IANS): Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has backed Qatari-funded The Alpha Group's bid to take over control of Britain's iconic racing circuit Silver-stone for the next 150 years.

Ecclestone believes it would be "wonderful" for Silverstone if a con-sortium funded through Qatar com-pletes the deal. The Daily Telegraph reported that The Alpha Group is a frontrunner in negotiations with the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), which has owned Silverstone for the last 60 years.

According to reports, the group has put down a 1 million pound non-refundable deposit to secure a period of exclusivity as preferred bidder.

The BRDC is looking out for in-vestment for the redevelopment of the track and surrounding land. This year new pits and paddock complex, dubbed the Silverstone Wing and built at a cost of 27 million pounds, was opened. BRDC also has ambi-tious plans to develop the site and build a hotel and conference centre, go-kart track and a University Tech-nical College.

Lady Gaga leaves desi 'monsters' wonderstruck

Greater Noida, Oct 31 (IANS): 'Mother monster' Lady Gaga didn't fail to charm her desi 'monsters'. The pop icon, who was here for a four-day trip, left her fans mesmerized with her piano skills, her fusion performance, her confidence and her warm "Namaste India". All of 25, the "Poker face" superstar landed here Thursday night and addressed a press conference and met some of her fans Friday afternoon. She shot for a chat show with Shah Rukh Khan and rehearsed long and hard for what was her maiden stage show in India Sunday night. The singer had planned a special treat, and fans were treated to just that -- Gaga played the piano herself, and even sang to the strains of a sitar to offer her desi monsters some Indian element. Known for her bizarre sense of dressing, she chose to go mellow with a creation by designer Tarun Tahil-iani for her performance here. She wore a white, knee-length dress and flaunted her open, blonde locks. She ended her performance with a warm and cheerful "Namaste India". Around 1,000 guests, including high-profile ce-lebrities from the film, fashion, F1, sports and business worlds, gathered to witness Gaga perform live at the F1 finale after-

Actor Minnisha Lamba (best known for her glamorous looks in the flick- Kidnap) was recently spotted in the city at the launch of the new media spot – Shroom. She definitely raised the oomph factor with her steamy bikini shots in Kidnap, however, for all those who expected something extra, the outing in the capital city proved to be a little less glamorous. Dressed in a shim-mering grey dress with a black clutch and not to mention the mismatched pink stilettos, this was a major contrast to her on-screen adventures. It’s time Minnisha gets back on that threadmill, sheds those pre-winter kilos and maybe even hire a new stylist!

The shades that she gifted are the ones she wore during her press conference and incidentally, it is thanks to Suhana that Shah Rukh got hooked to Gaga's music. The singer has taken home a unique

party here. And so what if ticket were priced at a whopping Rs.40,000! But she went a step ahead to do something special for Shah Rukh, who wanted to work with her on a song for his film "RA.One". She gave away her sunglasses to the superstar for his 11-year-old daughter Suhana, a huge Gaga fan. "Lady Gaga is all heart and soul. Gave me her glasses for my daughter. yippeee..brownie points unlimited," Shah Rukh posted on his Twitter page.

dress by designer Nida Mahmood. The outfit, a short dress, is made with 1,000 LED lights. Describing it, Mahmood told IANS: "The dress which I made for her was part of my WIFW SS-12 collection titled The Great Indian Bohemian Tamasha. The dress is little above the knees and is embellished with over 1,000 LED lights. The digital print has been carefully designed incorporating the essence of Indian street theatre. The colours are very Indian - a mix of orange, red, green and blue. I call it 'Jadugaar dress for magical Gaga.'"
