I started preparingfor these comments by going through files…and came across an old photo of this lovelyEnglish Setter, a photo that I took in 1963 atthe Westminster Kennel Club show when itwas held in the old Madison Square Garden. Ilater realized that the handler was Jane Kamp;she later married Robert Forsyth, another verysuccessful handler, and they went on tobecome successful judges, and AKC icons. Thephoto was taken over 50 years ago…and ourworld has seen enormous change. In the past25 years, the AKC has been in the cross-hairsof constant demographic, economic and polit-ical changes. We have been adjusting andadapting to it, while retaining our focus onpurebred dogs and breeders.I am a candidate for the AKC board because Ibelieve in purebred dogs, and purebred dogbreeders…responsible dog ownership, andour many dog sports. I am also a strongbeliever in the AKC brand…and in our effortsto be “The Dog’s Champion.” My background includes over 40 years infinancial public relations – half as a corporateexecutive, half as a consultant; and I haveworked with many corporate boards and man-

agements. My active experience with dogs spans some 25years, showing in conformation, obedience, rally dock diving, lure coursing, tracking andworking in agility, hunt tests, and now scentwork. I served on the Board of the U.S.Australian Shepherd Association. I have been a delegate for 12 years, was anAKC board member from 2011-2015, chair ofthe AKC Audit Committee from 2013-2015. Ibelieve I can contribute not only to the chal-lenges our AKC family faces, but also to theopportunities we have ahead of us.And I mean it when I use the words, “AKCfamily”. I realized how committed to being“The Dog’s Champion”, the delegate body andthe Fancy were this past Fall, when disasterstruck – three hurricanes led by HurricaneHarvey, and wildfires out west. AKC Reuniteneeded our support. A challenge grant wentout and you and your clubs responded. Theresult was an extraordinary output of commit-ment and caring—results as of last week: some417 AKC clubs and hundreds of individualsdonated a total of $597,000 to AKC ReunitePet Disaster Relief. Truly extraordinary.I am proud to be a candidate supported by theAKC Board’s nominating committee. Ifelected to the board in March I will keep anopen mind…and work to keep the AKC andits brand, vibrant and growing. Thank You.(Applause)

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Bob.

The second candidate is Carl Ashby, represent-ing United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club.

Mr. Ashby: Good morning. My name is CarlAshby and I am asking you to return me to theBoard of Directors. My background in dogs aswell as business skills gained as President ofAT&T Custom Manufacturing Services sets meapart…and is precisely the backgroundrequired for a Director to address AKC’s chal-lenges.During my “sabbatical” I have reflected on myjourney as a Director and ultimately ViceChair of the American Kennel Club. I wasstruck by the transformation of the AKC that Ihelped lead.Accomplishing anything is a team effort butthe ability to get a Board to coalesce aroundideas is essential. I worked to be a good lis-tener, to compromise when needed, and bringstrong leadership. I will bring these skills againto assure we continue to move forward. My 28 years as a Delegate and service on threeDelegate Committees has given me a deepknowledge of AKC as well as your concerns. AsVice Chair, I helped shape many importantinitiatives and guide them to adoption. My in-depth understanding of AKC, plus my financeand analytical skills have impacted many keyareas. As Vice Chair of AKC Reunite, I helpeddevelop new initiatives to reunite pets andtheir owners while doubling our revenues. This allowed increased support for the trailer

project and pet disaster relief. As Chair of the AKC Political ActionCommittee, we regained momentum settingfund-raising records including $51,000 lastyear. This allowed us to successfully influenceimportant legislation in our fight against theanimal rights movement. Just as importantly, Jaimie and I remain activein the sport. In the past 5 years, we bred 2 lit-ters and finished several dogs. I serve as aCluster and Show Chair, so I understand “firsthand” the challenges you face in hostingevents. Companion Events gave us our start inpurebred dogs and Performance Events arethe best demonstration of purpose bred dog’stoday. I believe both are an essential part ofAKC.Our work is not done. There are many chal-lenges to be overcome. Here are just a few:1. We must create events that attract andretain new and younger people to the AKCfamily. 2. We must strengthen our Clubs as they arethe backbone of AKC.3. And we must attract new, responsible breed-ers to meet the growing demand for purebreddogs.AKC is significantly stronger than 9 years ago.We are investing in dogs and dog sports asnever-before…and we must continue to do so!To invest effectively requires vision, creativity, experience, and most of all, leadership. Theseare traits I demonstrated during my pastBoard service…they made a difference then

and they can make a difference going for-ward! Please give me the opportunity to again serveyou and our dogs. With my experience, I willhit the ground running for you, our dogs, andthe American Kennel Club. On a more personal note Jaimie and I wish allof you a very Happy Holiday season. Thankyou.(Applause)

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Carl.Next is James R. Dok, representing GigHarbor Kennel Club.

Mr. Dok: Mr. President, members of theDelegate Body, I too am asking you to returnme to another four-year term. I would reallylike that. I want to do something different. Iwant to talk about the number of years I'vebeen here. Next year September will be 25years. I don't know where the time went. But Ido know one thing. In those 25 years, I've meta lot of great dog people. That's what's impor-tant. Some of the work we've done as aDelegate has been substantial. We've had a fewmoments. We've made a few mistakes. Butwe've moved through them and resolved it.This body is all about deliberating. That's whatwe are supposed to do very well!About 12 years ago, the Board came to somedecision that we need to be somehow developa Business Platform parallel with our SportPlatform. They struggled for years to try and

discover ways to do it. We finally arrived at alegal mechanism to do just that. So, in order to have a Business Platform tohelp build, and grow our Sport Platform, oh,my God, we went out and hired a ChiefGrowth Officer. People said, what's a ChiefGrowth Officer? Less than eight percent of thecorporations in America today have one. Soyour question's fair. What that Chief GrowthOfficer has done, along with her team, is putin place initiatives that can be monetized tobring revenue into this company. Some of youdon't like the word "company," but, by God,that's what we need to be good at achieving. The Sport Platform needs the BusinessPlatform. We really do. We need to positionourselves to grow for the future. We must dothat.I've said this many times before, we need to,within ourselves, understand that it's “impor-tant to be ALL THINGS, ALL DOGS.” We can-not capture the public's confidence that theywould like to have, and visualize within theAmerican Kennel Club. They want that. Wecan give it to them. Thank you. (Applause)

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Jim. The fourth candidate is Jan Ritchie Gladstone, representing Richmond Dog Fanciers Club.

Ms. Gladstone: Good morning FellowDelegates and thank you. My name is JanRitchie Gladstone. By way of background, I

have been in the legal business for 30 yearsincluding leadership roles in Managementand Marketing. I’ve represented large corpo-rations and nonprofits. I understand strategicand succession planning, finance and budget-ing. But, like so many of you, “there was a dog” andI found my true passion in the dog sport:as a proud breeder of purpose bred dogs anda dedicated volunteer for my All-Breed andParent Clubs; as Exhibitor, Judge or ClubMember, I have walked the walk in every AKCDivision in the contiguous U.S., counted thepoints for majors and appreciate the differ-ences in culture and geography which makeeach of our Kennel Clubs unique.I come to you today to ask for the honor ofyour vote. Together, let’s bring back the heartof the AKC by connection, communicationand commitment. First, let’s do it by connection. Past is alwayspretext, but particularly so in the world ofpurebred dogs. AKC Preservation Breederscarefully study the history of our lines in plan-ning for the future. We carefully assess geno-type and phenotype, health and temperamentto stay true to the vision of the breeders of thepast on whose shoulders we stand. Similarly, the AKC must implement a cogent and com-prehensive strategic plan for the future with-out recklessly ignoring its mission and history. The AKC is a Club of Clubs. Our clubs mustbe part of the decision-making process if theyare to be expected to support the AKC’s

future direction. Clubs feel disenfranchisedwhen programs like LINK or the New YorkKennel are rolled out without their knowledgeor know-how. The AKC must also allocatemore money and manpower to Clubs to insureour survival. Given the AKC’s current financialstability, let’s repeal the $3.50 per dog eventfee. Let’s listen to our Clubs: we are the AKC.Second, let’s do it by communication. TheAKC must extol the virtues of purebred dogownership and events to those inside and out-side the sport. We must also defend our rightto own purebred dogs against the AR activists.Let’s coordinate our education, public rela-tions and legislative efforts to improve theimage of purebred dogs and their breeders.Proactive not reactive youth outreach pro-grams, publicity and legislation will preserveour sport. Let’s invest now.Third, let’s do it by commitment. The AKCmust be dedicated to excellence. Through theconnection and communication initiatives I’vediscussed, progress will be made in retainingand recruiting Breeders and Exhibitors withthis ideal, young and old. In addition, ourParent, All-Breed, Obedience and AgilityClubs, must be supported as the first and mostpersonal contacts and mentors for future par-ticipants in the sport. Encouraging club mem-bership with strong incentives is but one placeto start.Share your ideas with me. Let’s speak up andspeak out. With Connection, Communicationand Commitment, let’s make a difference.

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Jan. The fifth candidate is Christopher Sweetwood, representing Trap Falls Kennel Club.

Mr. Sweetwood: I am Chris Sweetwood, thedelegate for Trap Falls Kennel Club, based inStratford, Connecticut. I serve on the DelegateField Trial/Hunting Test advisory committeeas the vice chair. I was a member of theDetection Dog Conference and was on theAchiever dog committee. I have been involvedwith purebred dogs since the age of eight withmy father, who bred German ShorthairPointers. After completing a military/lawenforcement career I discovered the SpinoneItaliano in the 1990’s. I am a pointing breedhunting test judge, CGC Evaluator, CanineAmbassador and AKC Reunite’s Ambassadorfor the Adopt a K-9 Cop Program. I participatein Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Trick dog,Therapy and Hunting Tests. I was a speaker at the 2016 and 2017 AKCGovernmental Relations (GR) conferencesand the New England GR conference. Ifounded the adopt a K-9 Cop program that, inconjunction with AKC Reunite helps localpolice departments fund the purchase ofpolice dogs which includes placing the AKCReunite logo on the police patrol vehicle. I grew up influenced by the Boy Scouts ofAmerica, and still am a member. I am an EagleScout and served as a Scoutmaster for 25

years. I serve on the Board of Directors for mylocal American Legion and VFW Posts and ama member of The Criminal InvestigationDivision Agents Association.I love dogs and how they contribute to the bet-terment of the human condition. I love thedog fancy and all the great work they do fortheir dogs and the dog world. I am someonewho understands and has been activelyinvolved in almost every area of conformationand performance events to include promotingAKC, their events, AKC Reunite, CHF and theAKC PAC. I believe we are a club of clubs. Without theclubs holding their events and encouragingmembership, we are dead in the water. Therewould be no shows or events of any kind. Wemust embrace the clubs and help facilitate theactivities of our clubs. We must help ourbreeders in every possible way. Registrationnumbers have shown that when more dogs areregistered, more dogs enter shows. Our newerprograms are a great start and we can domore. Our greatest message is that “We lovedogs” and we need to get that to a broaderaudience, out over and over again. We havethe greatest organization, dogs and people inthe world and I want everyone to know it. Irespectfully ask for your support in March. Mythanks to the AKC Nominating committee fortheir endorsement and thank you, for all youdo. Have a joyous holiday season and safe trav-els home. (Applause)

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Chris. The sixth candidate is Harold "Red" Tatro, III,representing Fort Worth Kennel Club.

Mr. Tatro: Good morning – my name isHarold Tatro and I am the delegate for theFort Worth Kennel Club. Many of you knowme by my nickname – “Red”. I would like togive you a little background of who I am andwhere I come from. Many people have spokenabout the need to get our youth involved tosave our sport and increase our numbers. Onesuggestion has been more involvement with 4-H clubs. I can say this plan does work. I amsomeone who was a 4-H clubber and later asan adult came back to the sport of purebreddogs. Like many of you I started out inObedience. I then acquired a dog to show inConformation. Once that first blue ribbon washanded to me and my dog – I was hooked andnever looked back! I am a breeder-owner-handler. I still activelybreed, show my dogs in Conformation, trainand compete in Obedience & Rally, conditionand run my dogs at Lure Coursing & racing. Iam an AKC judge who just received approvalfor my second group. I understand what thecurrent day situation is like at shows for theexhibitors, breeders and professional han-dlers. I have served as the President of the AmericanWhippet Club for the past 5 years as well as apast President of the United States LakelandTerrier Club. Over the last 35 years I have

served in several Board positions for mynational parent clubs, local specialty club andall-breed clubs. I understand the importancethese clubs have to the continuation of oursport. The AKC Board has the duty and responsibil-ity to oversee the business of the organization,I believe a director should have a good foun-dation in the principles of business. As a CPAand someone with undergraduate and gradu-ate degrees in business – I have that founda-tion. As a CFO, it is a regular part of my dayjob to analytically evaluate various scenariosand formulate a proposal on how to achieve astrategic goal. Serving on the Board of the AKC requirespeople who not only have a sound understand-ing of business but also have a strong back-ground in the sport of dogs. I believe my long-time participation in conformation, companion and performance events gives mea solid and varied understanding of our sport.A director must also have the ability to listenand work well with others. Having served onseveral boards and as a President has given methe understanding that a Board is comprisedof several good minds and opinions – and theyare all valid. As someone with a strong finan-cial skillset I believe I would be a good addi-tion to the decision process the 13 members ofthe Board make every day. Finally, the AKCBoard needs people who are clear thinkersand not afraid to express their opinions – myfriends and acquaintances will attest that I am

not one to sit on the sidelines nor afraid toexpress my opinion. I thank you for your timeand ask for your support in the upcomingelection.(Applause)

Mr. Sprung: Thank you, Red. The seventh candidate is Ann Wallin, repre-senting Atlanta Kennel Club.

Ms. Wallin: Good morning again. Don’t worry;I know what you are thinking…Thank good-ness, she is the last one!! So, hang in there for3 more minutes and then we can all take adeep breath and relax!I am honored to have been elected this pastyear to the Board by the current Board ofDirectors and that they placed their confi-dence in me to serve in this important role. Iam here today to ask, you, my fellow delegatesto place your confidence in me as well so I cancontinue to serve in a job I take very seriously. As a Delegate for the last 17 years, like you Ihave seen a transformation of the businessside of the AKC. We can all recall the financialstruggles and the registration declines of pastyears. Today, we can all applaud the work ofStaff, Board and the Delegate Body in creatingthe new resources, the new knowledge, thenew expertise, and the new muscle thatbrought about the recovery we enjoy today.Registrations continue to increase, financialperformance continues to be healthy andgrowing, and our marketing strategies are

delivering big dividends in our impact on alldog owners. So, what lies ahead? We all know there is more. There are our clubs – just under 5000 of them. They are the foundation of the AmericanKennel Club and without them there would beno AKC. There are our events – over 22,000 each year. They, too, are the foundation of the AmericanKennel Club and without them there would beno AKC.Today, no club – not yours and not mine – andno event of any type, is insulated from signifi-cant challenges that threaten our future. For the past 13 years as Chair of the All-BreedClubs Committee, I have heard those chal-lenges and focused my efforts on helping ourclubs survive and thrive. I believe the time hascome for us to focus those same newresources, knowledge, expertise, and musclesquarely and passionately on helping our clubsand our sport achieve the success theydeserve. In the months I have served on the AKCBoard, I have come to better understand andappreciate the outstanding capability of AKCStaff and recognize the potential impact all ofthem could have on our clubs and our sport.I think Henry Ford’s definition of success par-allels the AKC perfectly. He said, “Comingtogether is a beginning; keeping together isprogress; working together is success.”If you return me to the Board, I assure you my

focus will be bringing the power of theentirety of the AKC to work for the success ofyour clubs and the growth of our sport. It must happen.Let’s build an amazing future for AKCtogether.Thank you!(Applause)

plete transcript is posted on the Delegate'sPortal on our website. There were no correc-tions and the minutes were adopted as pub-lished.

The Chair recognized Steven Hamblin,Delegate for the Pekingese Club of America, who spoke as follows: I have a question. I may be asking about thewrong minutes, so please forgive me. But inthe last meeting, there had been a conversa-tion about Board minutes from a prior meet-ing and that there was going to be some clarityof those Board minutes. But when the Boardminutes were approved, they were approved asstated originally. I'm just unclear –

Ms. DiNardo: That's duly noted. But I don'tknow exactly what you're referring to.

Mr. Hamblin: I was referring to the date. I'mso sorry. There had been a Board conversationabout limited registration, and it had beenexplained to us in the Delegate meeting thatthe minutes did not reflect the sentiment ofthe conversation in the Board room at thetime, but it was never amended or correctedto reflect what we were told was the conversa-tion at the time. And so, I mean, it stands as itis. I'm just confused about what it is.

Ms. DiNardo: You're talking about Boardmeeting minutes, not Delegate minutes?

Mr. Hamblin: Yes.

Mr. Sprung: That is the Board minutes. Wewill go back to those minutes for that meetingto the discussion and motion that was passedunanimously on limited registrations. You willbe provided with clarification. Thank you somuch.

The Carolina Working Group Association wasduly elected a member of the AmericanKennel Club.

This is in comparison toour prior year results where we recognized$59.3 million in Revenue with $54.2 million inExpenses and an outstanding $5.1 million inOperating Income. Let’s next here observe our Core RegistrationVolumes through November 30. We have regis-tered totals of 219,000 litters and 517,000 dogsover 11 months this year. Our litter volumehas increased by 7% from 205,000 in 2016,while our dog registrations have also escalatedby 7% from 483,000 at November 30, 2016.As we look to close December, our hope is tosurpass the milestones of 240,000 litters and560,000 dogs by year-end. We have now had 4consecutive years of non-declining volumesand the AKC has not recognized these peaktotal volumes since 2009. We are getting a

return on our investments and customer sup-port efforts! Congratulations to an entire teamfocus and an overall dedication to success! As a transition, let’s just highlight here ourRevenue successes. Year over Year – we are up$6 million in Total Revenue or nearly 10%.Let's assess our Major Revenue Sources Year toDate. Our Registration Items. specifically,Dogs. We have recorded an additional $1.2million in revenue this year which is a 7%increase from 2016. Our Litter Revenueincrease of $476,000 dollars also reflects a 7%surge.Our next largest registration related revenueis that of Pedigrees. Our $136,000 increase thisyear has jumped by 3% from 2016. Outside ofRegistrations, our next largest areas of rev-enue increases include the following: OurCanine Good Citizen and our Trick Dog pro-grams. We have logged a 25% increase or anadditional $333,000 in revenue during 2017.Our Growth Group has increased by $3.1 mil-lion or 38% during 2017. This includes DigitalAdvertising by $2.2 million, our eCommerceplatform by half a million dollars andMarketplace activities by $400,000.Let’s transition to our year to date analysis ofExpenses. Year over Year – our costs have risenby $6.3 million or 11%. In evaluating ourmajor expense increases year to date, ourPayroll and Benefits of $31.4 million repre-sents a $4.7 million or 17% increase from thissame comparative period in 2016. Our current Full Time Headcount is 338,

which has increased by 8% from our level of313 at November 30, 2016. Also, coincidingwith an increase to headcount, has been anincrease in our Consulting costs. We havespent $1.3 million in total year to date, whichis a 63% increase or $543,000 – in order tohelp drive revenue and support our customerfocus. Our Equipment costs – including main-tenance and rentals – have risen by $165,000or 15% during the year. This can mainly beattributed to our advancement of moving ourinformation technology services to the cloudand the related dual progress with it.Lastly, we have spent approximately $265,000to date as part of our research, developmentand preparations for our forthcoming officerelocation endeavors. To summarize the cur-rent status of our operations, revenue num-bers have shined, we have controlled our cur-rent costs, while expending toward newactivities and programs with continued poten-tial streams in the future. Aside from our operating results analysis, we’lltake a brief look at our investment portfolioresults as well. For the 11-month period of2017, our portfolio has unrealized gains of $11million dollars. Our phenomenal year to dateinvestment return of 10.9% has participated inthe overall upside market with our benchmarkat 12.4%. If this current unprecedented rallycontinues, then we can expect to come closeto our portfolio’s single year investment gainhigh from back in 2013, when we reached$13.0 million dollars.

The Balance Sheet of the AKC maintains ourlong-term strength. We are at $164.2 millionin Total Assets, a 14% and $20.5 million dollarincrease from the same point last year. Finally, our Total Liabilities of $71.2 million haveincreased by 6% and $4.0 million over the pastyear. The majority of our liabilities areextended term in nature and include morethan $63 million in pension and post-retire-ment benefits.I’d like to conclude our brief performancereport with the phenomenal fact that ourlong-term Net Assets have increased by morethan $16 million or 21% over the past year!Thank you to everyone on the Board,Management and Staff, and the Delegate Bodyfor contributing to AKC’s outstanding achieve-ments in 2017! We wish everyone to have a memorable timehere in Orlando! Continued success ahead in2018! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! (Applause)

The Chair informed the Delegates that theannual meeting will be held on Tuesday,March 13, 2018, at the Doubletree NewarkAirport Hilton. The March meeting will be theannual election of Class of 2022 Board ofDirectors.

The following Delegates spoke during NewBusiness:

Julian Prager, Delegate for the Central Florida

Kennel Club, spoke about an issue facing along-time member of the Fancy.

Gail LaBerge, Delegate for the AtlantaObedience Club, wanted to remind Delegatesthat AKC PAC is always prepared to receivedonations and that representatives were out-side the meeting room as well as at PAC boothat the show. She urged Delegates to supportcandidates in the upcoming election year whosupport dog owners’ rights.

Barbara Mann, Delegate for Dayton DogTraining Club, shared a conversation she hadwith a gentleman, who along with his wife, have had purebred dogs for 30 years and cur-rently run one in agility. He mentioned thatwhen they got their first dog there were adozen breeders statewide for their breed butnow there are only two. Ms. Mann concludedthat it’s getting harder and harder to get apurebred dog and she sees limited registra-tions as a major cause.

Barbara Norton, Delegate for the UpperSnake River Valley Dog Training Club, hadsuggestions on ways to effectively battle thespay and neuter issue. She contacted the NRAand they came out and lent support inCalifornia. She suggested Delegates gettingthe NRA as well as the Cattleman’s Associationto come out at help them in their states.

Canaan Dog Club of America, told theDelegates about how the Canaan Dog Club ofAmerica, which is a small parent club with verylimited resources, raised money for AKCReunite. One of their members donated aone-week stay in a Maui condo as a raffle prizeat their national specialty. They were able toraise enough money to make a substantialdonation to AKC Reunite. She hoped otherclubs with limited financial resources and adesire to contribute would find creative waysto fundraise for AKC affiliates.

David Hopkins, Delegate for the EnglishSpringer Spaniel Field Trial Club of Illinois, spoke as a member of the Legal OutreachCommittee and wanted to bring two matters tothe attention of the Delegates. First, that thereis a writing contest for law students through-out the country under the auspices of JADA.Information can be found at writeaboutani-mallaw.com. Students can write on pet cus-tody, evaluation of animals and estate plan-ning and litigation matters involving dogs. The deadline for submission of the paper isMarch 30, 2018. Mr. Hopkins asked for lawyersto work through their bar associations to chan-nel materials on the contest to law schools intheir areas. On behalf of all members of the LegalOutreach Committee, Mr. Hopkins expresseda huge thank you to the Board for approving aprotocol to facilitate membership for severalmembers of the Legal Outreach Committee to

serve on the Animal Law Committee of a par-ticular section of the American BarAssociation. This is the premiere bar associa-tion in the animal law world. To date, thereare no AKC-affiliated lawyers on that commit-tee. Barbara Penny, Martha Feltenstein andMr. Hopkins will be the initial members of thiscommittee.

Gregory Paveza, Delegate for the Elm CityKennel Club, wanted to thank Dr. Davies andthe members of the Ad Hoc Committee whoworked hard on the redevelopment of thejudging approval process, and appreciated theexceptional work that had gone into it. He did however have some issues with the test-ing process as it does not, in his opinion, takeinto account the average age of our judgesand the fact that they learned how to take testsin a different way. He asked that the staff takea serious look at both the test-taking develop-ment and test-taking psychology for the agegroup that comprises the majority of ourjudges.

Steven Hamblin, Delegate for the PekingeseClub of America, informed the Delegates thathe was the coordinator for the upcoming issueof Perspectives. He encouraged Delegates towrite an article, or if they wanted assistancewriting an article to reach out to anyone onPerspectives' Staff. Mr. Hamblin gave his emailaddress ([email protected])for those interested in submitting an article.

Sylvia Thomas, Delegate for Kennel Club ofRiverside, urged everyone in the room to takea look at Perspectives. Some of the articlesdeal with topics discussed at the meeting. There is also a staff interview with TimThomas in the current issue and she pointedat there is a staff interview in each issue ofPerspectives. Board candidates have beenasked to address a hot topic that she feels allDelegates will want to see answered that willappear in the March issue.

Sue Goldberg, Delegate for the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club, spoke about a crop anddock meeting she attended the day before, where an attendee pointed out the difficultyin finding vets who will crop and dock. Shesuggested that AKC put together a list of thoseVeterinarians across the country that will doso. She asked that if any of the Delegates werea veterinarian who will crop and dock or if aDelegate has a vet that will do so, the names ofthose vets should be sent to AKC. She furtherinformed the Delegates that the AmericanVeterinary Medical Association will be comingout against this being taught in veterinaryschools, so a list of vets that will crop and dockwill be extremely useful to our breeders.

Ann Wallin, AKC Board member and Delegatefor the Atlanta Kennel Club, wanted everyoneto know she had the pleasure of meeting ourPublic Education Director, Leslie Fetzer, who

told her that the Public Ed Department hadexpanded and were doing some fantasticthings, one of which was an art competitionfor local students. There were 175 submissionsdisplayed at the show and she believed that allthe children except for one would be attend-ing the show. Ms. Wallin felt it was a fantasticway to reach out to young people and to getthem excited about dog shows and wanted tocongratulate Ms. Fetzer and her departmentfor a job well done.

Patricia Laurans, Delegate for the GermanWirehaired Pointer Club of America, spokeabout Pet Disaster Relief Trailers, and howdeeply grateful she and the team are to theDelegates and the clubs that demonstrated anamazing outpouring of support since LaborDay and Hurricane Harvey, with a total of$582,981.87 donated. Since the launch four years ago of the AKCPet Disaster Relief program there are now 64trailers and there will soon be 7 added.Trailers have been deployed 21 times inresponse to hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, flooding and an apartment fire. She quoted Tammy Miller, manager for theTri-City Animal Shelter, who said, "I cannotexpress how grateful we were to have theseresources that we could share with those insuch desperate need. You are truly lifesavers.Thank you to every member of the AKC fam-ily." On a personal note, Ms. Laurans thanked

everyone for their concern and help duringthe last year and especially thanked the AKCand the committee that chose the judges forthe show. Her assignment to judge the BestNational Owner/Handler in Show spurredher on and was impetus to be able to walk intothe ring on Doug Ljungren's arm. She againthanked the Delegates and the judging com-mittee for their support and said they werelike family.

David Michael Powers, Delegate from LosEncinos Kennel Club, spoke about being pres-ent at the last meeting when he inquiredabout the history of the foundation, the finan-cial statistics, the administration of both LINKand the dog day care programs. At the time hewas informed that there would be a pressrelease, which there was. However he felt thatit did not answer his questions. He requestedthat the Board and Staff perhaps be moretrusting and open with the Delegate Body.

Cathleen Rubens, Delegate for Butler CountyKennel Club, reminded the Delegates that alegislation survey was sent out from the All-Breeds Subcommittee on Best Practices. Sherequested that everyone respond (oneresponse per club), because without input, they can’t get best practices to the rest of thecommunity.

As there was no further business, the meetingwas adjourned.

(The meeting concluded at 12:10 p.m.)

December 2017 Chairman’s MessageAs we near the end of our 133rd year asAmerica’s strongest advocate for purebreddogs, it is a privilege to reflect on how muchwe have accomplished. The cornerstone ofour mission, AKC Sports and Events are ourlink to the past, present and future. In 2017 wechallenged ourselves to create a path togrowth for Events. An extraordinary set ofprojects were set in motion this year to fortifyand expand our events for the benefit of alldogs and exhibitors. A retention strategy was developed to ensurethat current exhibitors will have a lifetime ofactivities to enjoy with their dogs. To achieveit, we created ways to expand existing sportsand encourage transitions into other types ofevents. The Conformation Puppy ofAchievement pilot program, the first RetrieverField Trial National Derby Championship, twonew classes in Rally and the introduction ofFSS breeds into Junior Showmanship are justsome of the opportunities we created toencourage exhibitors to “go deeper” into oursports. We also introduced an enhancedJuniors Recognition Program and JuniorVersatility scholarships to celebrate and sup-

port the diverse accomplishments of ouryoungest constituents. Our new advanced lev-els of the Breeder of Merit program recognizebreeders’ long-term commitment and honorstheir mentorship of puppy buyers. The newAchiever Dog pilot program and an emailcampaign to CGC graduates not only recog-nize versatility but also encourage exhibitorsto try their hand at new events. Attracting new participants to AKC events wasalso a focal point of the year’s activities.Education, communication and innovationwere the components we leveraged to build afoundation for growth. Five videos were pro-duced to educate newcomers about ourSports, including dog shows, the Agility ACTclass, CGC and STAR Puppy, Farm Dog andRally. There is now an AKC Sports Facebookpage that shares our stories with a broadeningaudience. We have been making significantimprovements to the Event Search functionson AKC.org to make it easier for potentialexhibitors to find events, classes and training.A geo-targeted email campaign to new dogregistrants will build awareness about Specialtyshows and plant the seeds of community thatwe so enjoy through our breeds. We alsolaunched an email campaign expressly forfirst-time exhibitors to welcome them to thesport and encourage continued participation. Expanding our portfolio of events has beenanother means to increase and diversify ourconstituency, as first happened with Agilityback in the nineteen-nineties. This year we

introduced the AKC Tricks program and thenew sport of AKC Scent Work, which are wel-coming new dog owners to the wonderful andwide world of AKC. Scent Work outpacedexpectations with five thousand entries in itsvery first month. Our Tricks program hasalready achieved more than fifteen thousandtitle applications, proving the value dog own-ers place on training that is fun and flexible.Notably, thirty percent of Tricks title holdersare new to AKC Events. Reaching a new audi-ence through innovative programs is the firststep in engaging dog owners, opening theireyes to broader possibilities with their dogs, and inspiring them to challenge themselvesfurther. Clubs are the lifeblood of our Sports andEvents, so in 2017 we put new infrastructure inplace to provide them with even greater sup-port. We launched the Club DevelopmentProgram to help clubs needing extra assis-tance to manage their shows and to devisestrategies for growth. As a result of workingwith this new department, several clubs haveseen a notable increase in entries. Offering ahelping hand and proving our commitment toquality and integrity are the most importantways in which AKC can make a difference forour Sports. Revisions to the judging approvalprocess that emphasize breed education havebeen approved and will become effective inJanuary; we hope the end result will be morequalified judges, more confident exhibitors, more successful shows, and happier host clubs.

SECRETARY’S PAGESWe are already seeing the positive effects ofthis approach. Participation in the NationalOwner Handled Series has grown to covernearly seventy percent of all breed shows, thanks in part to our strengthening of judgingrequirements for NOHS in 2017. Improving the overall experience for currentexhibitors and drawing in new participantswith innovative programs are key objectives aswe continue to foster the health and growth ofAKC Events. Our focus over the past year willonly sharpen as we head into a new year and anew season of exciting and rewarding eventsto share with our purebred dogs.

With very best holiday wishes,Ron
