Delaware Community friends and families, It is hard to believe that we are entering the month of November. With two full months of school behind us, we are in full swing at DCS. Morning Program continues to be a powerful event that is helping to shape our children into thoughtful and active members of our community. This month we are focusing on “Citizenship.” We conducted two Lockdown drills in the month of October. Both, students and staff, have worked hard to practice safety protocol during these drills. We will continue to make safety a priority at DCS throughout the school year. Family Math Night is an annual event at DCS that has become a rich tradition.

- 10: 00 a.m.

It is time to get ready for the annual flu season, which typically runs from October to May. Influenza (flu) is a viral infection, easily spread from person to person, that usually comes on suddenly and can cause some or all of the following symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, fatigue and in some cases vomiting or diarrhea. Illness can vary from mild to severe and some people will develop complications such as pneumonia, which may be life-threatening. People at INCREASE RISK for serious complications if they get the flu include YOUNG CHIL-DREN, PREGNANT WOMEN; PEOPLE 65 AND OLDER, and PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC MEDICAL CONDITIONS SUCH AS DIABETES, ASTHMA OR HEART DISEASE. Please protect yourself and families by getting a flu vaccine which is available now. The flu vaccine this year will protect you from the H1N1 virus as well as 2 other common flu vi-ruses for a total of 3 in one vaccine. To obtain a flu vaccine call your physician, local pharmay or the Albany County Health Department which has two clinics scheduled in November(telephone number is 447-4505). REMEMBER, to stop the spread of germs, cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or cough/sneeze into the bend of your elbow or shoul-der and turn away from others. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs can spread this way. If you are sick stay home for at least 24 hours AFTER your fever is gone WITH-OUT THE USE OF FEVER-REDUCING MEDICATION.

Please be sure if your child(ren) still needs a physical this year (all new entrants to DCS, Pre-K, K, 2nd and 4th graders), you should have your child's pediatrician do the physical. Our school physician is available to do physcials, however, this exam does not take the place of your child's own pediatrician. The school exam is basically to screen the student for gym and does not take the place of the in-depth physical done by your student's pediatrician . Physicals are good for one year. For example, if your student had a physical last September (2009) he/she would be due now for a new physical. Physical forms can be obtained from the Health Office at Delaware Community School. If at any time you have questions regarding the above, please feel free to call me at 475-6755. I am very happy to answer any questions you may have.

FREE flu shots are available to Albany County residents age 19 years and older on Saturday, November 6th from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the Albany County Department of Health, 175 Green Street, Albany, N.Y. and Tuesday, No-vember 9th, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Albany Public Library, 161 Washington Avenue, Albany, N.Y. You must register by calling the Albany County Health Department Flu Line at 518-447-4505 or go to www.albanycounty.com/health.

Kindergarten - Dual Language

In the Classroom

October was a very busy and exciting month in Mrs. Valentine's Kindergarten classroom. Mr. Giglio read a very interesting book to our class, "Hands are Not for Hitting". We learned how to be kind and respectful to our friends and we should always use our hands and feet for peaceful actions only. On October 14th we had our first field trip to Kristy's Barn. While there, we learned all about the life cycle of pumpkins. We got to pet two new baby ducks, go on a hay ride and pick our very own pumpkins. After our trip we all went back to school and ate lunch in the classroom with Mrs. Valentine. Our second field trip was to the Firehouse on Delaware Ave. on Oct. 22nd. We learned a lot about being safe at home, in the car and while playing outside. The most exciting part of the trip was getting a chance to sit in the big fire truck and watching one of the firemen come down the pole from the second floor of the firehouse. On November 9th we will be going to Thatcher Park and on November 12th we will be walking across the street to the Delaware Avenue Library.

In the Classroom

Mrs. Short

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are well on our way into a very busy school year that will be filled with many learning experiences! We’ve been experimenting, comparing and contrasting, learning about families, sorting and have even begun to read! In October, we went on a field trip to Kristy’s Barn and learned more about community helpers on our visit to the Engine 9 Firehouse. At the end of the month we completed our Benchmark assessments and began our Phonological Assessments (the ability to hear and produce sounds). In November, our class will be sponsoring a Gift Pack drive for Wounded Soldiers and Veterans. We will be collecting a variety of items throughout the month, including playing cards, socks, magazines, razors, puzzle book games. These items (and others) must be new and unused. They will be donated in honor of all the men and women who have served and who con-tinue to serve our country. The items are put into care packages and distributed at Veteran Hospitals through-out the country. We will continue to learn about communities in November, counting, and living things. Please keep reading!! Don’t forget to sign up for the PTA. The three top classes with PTA membership will receive a Pizza Party!!

Mrs. Short

Kindergarten

Miss Zielenski Our class enjoyed some truly creepy lessons in October and students moved at a scary pace through the multi-plication chart. Now in November, we are harvesting the reward of that hard work and jumping right into divi-sion. Be sure to ask your son/daughter to explain how fact families relate to multiplication and division. In Sci-ence, we are studying how physical and behavioral adaptations help animals to survive. We are also reaping the reward of oral fluency practice and our weekly presentations have begun! Parents, please ask your child to inform you when it is their turn to perform so that you can join us! Srta.

Mrs. Myers

Graphic Novel Mania in Mrs. Myers’ Class

Our class received over 45 graphic novels from Barnes and Nobles through a Donorschoose grant. We love graphic novels and are excited to add these fabulous books to our classroom library.

This is what a few of us have to say about graphic novels:

“I really like graphic novels especially the book Amulet. It’s a sad book and it has lots of actions. There are talking animals in it too. I like this book mostly because of the action.” - Jah’siah Daniels.

“The book Bone by Jeff Smith is really good because there are creatures in it. The people in the book are try-ing to get away from the monsters. I like graphic novels because they have a lot of pictures.” –Elijah Cruz

“I like the book Jellaby by Kean Soo because it has a lot of interesting things in it. They have talking animals and the people can understand the animals. I like graphic novels because they are easy to read and they are long and take a while to read.”-Brielle Bethea

“I like the book Humpty Dumpty Jr. Detective by Nate Evans because the main character is a detective. Hump-ty Dumpty goes around trying to solve cases. I like graphic novels because they have a lot of action in them.”-Jhacere Walters

“I’m reading Wolves in the Wall by Neil Gaimon, I like it because it tells a lot more than just reading words. I can tell what the characters are thinking and feeling through the pictures. I like graphic novels because they are more interesting than chapter books.”-Sarah Seymour

ESL Ms. Iorio The last week of October in Ms. Iorio’s ESL class is Pumpkin Week. We read Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. During Pumpkin Week we learned about the pumpkin life cycle, the different parts of a pumpkin, wrote pumpkin life cycle panel books, measured and compared different pumpkins, carved Jack-O-Lanterns and ate pumpkin pie!

My child still doesn’t know all his letters and sounds. What can I do to help him at home?

The good news is that he can begin to read without all his letters and sounds first. The best thing you can do is to read aloud to him every night. Ask him to share the books he brings home, and then choose another book for you to read to him. Talk about the books and enjoy that time together.

There are also some alphabet games you can play with him. But these games should be in addition to reading together every night! The alphabet games should be quick and fun. A free website, www.starfall.com, has letters and sound work that children enjoy. You can also make or buy cards with letters of the alphabet and pictures on them. You and your child can play a matching game where you match the C card with the cat picture. You can also use magnetic letters and then keep them on the refrigerator for your child to play with.

Keeping a family journal is another thing that will help build your child’s letter/sound knowledge. You can get a notebook and write notes to each other. Some of what he writes may be in pictures. Remember to accept what your child writes-don’t expect correct spelling. If he can write HS for house, that is great! Help him say words slowly and write the sounds he hears. Any other type of daily writing is great too – shopping lists, notes to his siblings, reminder notes, and so on. Writing is one of the best ways to develop letter and sound knowledge.

International Family Math Night No rain, no high winds, or cold forecast could keep many of our families from coming to Family Math

Night on Friday, October 15th. Kids ranging from 4 to 80 years old came together to enjoy our 18+ stations full of Math activities, in English and in Spanish.

Our guessing jar winners are: from grades K-2, from Mrs. Valentine's class with an exact guess of 33 candies...Sophia Anderson and from grade 3-5, from Mrs. Whisenhunt's class with an exact guess of 78 can-dies...Erin Lippit.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the many DCS staff members and parents who helped make this such a fun and educational event for everyone!

Ψ School Psychologist Corner: Homework Help

How to Help: Show You Think Education and Homework Are Important Children need to know that their parents and adults close to them think homework is important. If they know their par-ents care, children have a good reason to complete assignments and turn them in on time. There is a lot that you can do to show that you value education and homework. Set a Regular Time Finding a regular time for homework helps children finish assignments. The best schedule is one that works for your child and your family. What works well in one household may not work in another. Of course, a good schedule depends in part on your child's age, as well as individual needs. For instance, one youngster may work best in the afternoon after an hour of play, and another may be more efficient after dinner (although late at night, when children are tired, is seldom a good time). You'll need to work with your elementary school child to develop a schedule. It may help to write out the schedule and put it in a place where you'll see it often, such as the refrigerator door. Pick a Place A study area should have lots of light; supplies close by, and be fairly quiet. A study area doesn't have to be fancy. A desk in the bedroom is nice, but for many youngsters the kitchen table or a corner of the living room works just fine. Your child may enjoy decorating a special study corner. A plant, a brightly colored container to hold pencils, and some favorite artwork taped to the walls can make study time more pleasant. Remove Distractions Turn off the television and discourage social telephone calls during homework time. (A call to a classmate about an assignment may, however, be helpful.) Some youngsters work well with quiet background music, but loud noise from the stereo or radio is not OK. If you live in a small or noisy household, try having all family members take part in a quiet activity during homework time. You may need to take a noisy toddler outside or into another room to play. If distractions can't be avoided, your child may want to complete assignments in a nearby library. Provide Supplies and Identify Resources For starters, collect pencils, pens, erasers, writing paper, an assignment book, and a dictionary. Other things that might be helpful include glue, a stapler, paper clips, maps, a calculator, a pencil sharpener, tape, scissors, a ruler, index cards, a thesaurus, and an almanac. Keep these items together in one place if possible. If you can't provide your child with needed supplies, check with the teacher, school guidance counselor, or principal about possible sources of assis-tance. You may want to ask the teacher to explain school policy about the use of computers--or typewriters or any special equipment--for homework. Certainly, computers can be a great learning tool and helpful for some assignments. They can be used for word processing and on-line reference resources, as well as educational programs and games to sharpen skills. Some schools may offer after-school programs where your child can use the school computers. And many public libraries make computers available to children. Set a Good Example Children are more likely to study if they see you reading, writing, and doing things that require thought and effort on your part. Talk with your child about what you're reading and writing even if it's something as simple as making the grocery list. Tell them about what you do at work. Encourage activities that support learning--for example, educational games, library visits, walks in the neighborhood, trips to the zoo or museums, and chores that teach a sense of responsibility. Show Interest Make time to take your child to the library to check out materials needed for homework (and for fun too), and read with your child as often as you can. Talk about school and learning activities in family conversations. Ask your child what was discussed in class that day. If he doesn't have much to say, try another approach. For example, ask your child to read aloud a story he wrote or discuss the results of a science experiment. Another good way to show your interest is to attend school activities, such as parent-teacher meetings, shows, and sports events. If you can, volunteer to help in the classroom or at special events. Getting to know some classmates and other parents not only shows you're interested but helps build a network of support for you and your child.

* Establezca una hora determinada
